Time for another fun foray into trivia land ... on this Canada Day, one new rule applies -- your question must somehow involve Canada (Expos, Blue Jays, Royals, Olympics, native sons, whatever).

All the other usual rules apply -- no looking up the answer using an internet resource, books are fine, you're the first one to get the answer right, you ask the next question.

And here's the first question (it's a doozy) ...

What Brandon, Manitoba native holds the record for best winning percentage by a native-born Canadian big league pitcher (minimum 100 career decisions)?

Well, I am off to bed, and will check back in around 8:30 Central time tomorrow morning from work. If nobody has answered by then, we'll try a different question ... but I kind of expect Bauxites to come up with this. Canada Pride and all that.
Brett - Friday, July 01 2005 @ 09:26 AM EDT (#121215) #
The answer is Russ Ford, who had a 26-6 season as a rookie in 1910 for the New York Highlanders, and a career .582 winning percentage.

A similar question, but by region... name the all-time home run leaders among players born in

1) The West (Alberta, Sask., Manitoba)
2) Ontario
3) Quebec
4) The Maritimes

I think that most of us know who the leader from B.C. is.

Two of these players are still active.

I'll chip in Matt Stairs as the Maritimes guy, and along with B.C.'s Larry Walker make up the 2 active player component. As for Quebec, I have no clue. Ontario - wasn't there a catcher nicknamed "Twinkletoes", whose last name was Rosen?
Max Parkinson - Friday, July 01 2005 @ 12:14 PM EDT (#121230) #
Guesses here:

West - Walker
Ontario - Selkirk (the "twinkletoes" mentioned earlier)
Quebec - Tim Harkness
East - Stairs

Am I the only one who recognizes "The West" as not including British Columbia, based on Brett's second-last sentence?

1) Corey Koskie
2) Jeff Heath
3) Tim Harkness (though it doesn't sound right)
4) Matt Stairs

1 and 4, obviously, the active players. Though technically, Koskie has not been activated from the DL yet. :)

Not Harkness. I won't give away the answer, since I inadvertantly looked it up online while trying to figure out who Tim Harkness is.
Brett - Friday, July 01 2005 @ 02:50 PM EDT (#121244) #
Corey Koskie, Jeff Heath and Matt Stairs are all correct.

Larry Walker (from Maple Ridge, B.C.) is of course Canada's #1 home run hitter. Sorry if that part was unclear.

The player from Quebec was a third baseman in Chicago in the 1960's, but he wasn't Ron Santo.

Nobody said family couldn't be consulted...

The consensus around my family, who's from Quebec says that the answer is Claude Raymonde.

Since the curiosity got the better of me, I have just learned that Claude Raymond is the least likely player to earn this title. I'm going to go sit in the corner now.
Mike Green - Friday, July 01 2005 @ 03:09 PM EDT (#121247) #
Was Pete Ward from Quebec? That's my best guess.

I checked and he was indeed from Montreal. As I'm pretty sure that I've got the right guy, here's the next question.

Which 3 Canadian pitchers have recorded 100 wins? One is obvious, and the other two are not hard.
Rob - Friday, July 01 2005 @ 03:22 PM EDT (#121249) #
Fergie Jenkins, Kirk McCaskill...Reggie Cleveland must be the last one.

Right on, Rob. Fire away.
