I said this before, but I really dislike soft-tossing lefties. And thankfully, there's only one more 10:00 start on a Monday this season.

Yesterday's game got me thinking about West Coast road trips, and how the Jays always seem to suffer through the first game. Is this true? Read on to find out.

For this mini-study, I looked at games played in the Pacific Time Zone with one stipulation: the Blue Jays must have played in the Eastern Time Zone on the previous day.

June 15, 2004 in San Fran? Gone from the study; the 14th was an off-day.
July 19, 2004 in Oakland? The 18th saw the Jays play in Texas, which is definitely not EST.

So I went through Retrosheet's game logs for every season from 1977 to 2004 and added in the two games from this season, April 11 in Oakland and yesterday in Seattle. All told, there were 32 games:

  Date Opponent TOR OPP

I know, I know. Too much raw data. Well, here's a graph for you:

That huge dip near the beginning? That's around 1986-1988, just when the Jays were getting good. Interesting how that works. Please note how they finally pushed the differential above zero about halfway through: with a 14-5 win in Oakland on April 11, 1994. (Oakland also shows up on April 11 this year, 11 years to the day since the last Special West Coast Game.) If you glance back up to the Special West Coast Game table, you'll see that this 1994 game was preceded by three straight losses and followed by six more. Toronto has never done well in these Special West Coast Games (SWCG).

In fact, their record in SWCG is 13-19, a WPct of .406. Now, where have we seen a record that bad before? Yes, you guessed it -- the Jays' performance in SWCG is worse than their performance in the Season From Hell. And they haven't had a road record under .400 since...well, last year.

I think you get the point -- nearly every Special West Coast Game is like the Season From Hell. Interestingly, there was one SWCG last year -- a SFHSWCG, if you will -- on May 31, 2004, exactly one year ago today. And guess who the Jays were playing? Seattle. Guess who the starter was? Jamie Moyer. Guess who relieved the Jays' starter and pitched two scoreless innings, allowing only one hit? Vinny Chulk! Jim Wolf was an umpire in both games! Ichiro! scored a run in both games!

Okay, that's enough -- we don't need another Patriot's Day debacle on our hands here.

The point is, the Jays are not good on the first game of a Western road trip. I know what they feel like. Maybe I should just post Ted Lilly's Game Score chart and call it a night. I mean, a morning. Night? Ah hell, it's 2:30 as I write this, you decide whether it's Tuesday morning or Monday night.

I have nothing to add re: last night's game aside from the fact that Russ Adams should have pinch-hit for John McDonald in the ninth. Adams has all of 10 AB vs LHP this year, ranking ahead of only two players. One is Aaron Hill, the other is a pure platoon player. Is Russ Adams the shortstop version of Frank Catalanotto? We don't know yet, and only exposure to left-handed pitching will help us, the front office, the coaching staff or anyone else determine this.

I am rarely more frustrated than when watching the Jays play Jamie Moyer.

Please. Stop. Flailing. At. Those. Stupid. Outside. Softies.

But now, with him out of the way, the sky's the limit! And maybe a few of those medium depth fly balls that Jamie Campbell shouts about as if they're heading out of the park actually will.

The strange thing about your findings, Rob, is that when I travel west, I always find the return (losing hours) harder than the outbound trip (gaining them). I wonder what the Jay record is on the day after a direct flight back home from the West Coast. It wouldn't surprise me if it was poor despite the home field advantage.

I find travelling west much more difficult than east. I find it's easier to make yourself stay awake when tired, than it is to try and sleep when your body says its time to be awake (with the horrible side effect of getting up much earlier, since your body says it's 8am, but the clock says 5am). Therefore I always find it takes just one day to adjust going east, but usually three to four the other way. Of course I'm talking 5+ hour differentials, but I assume a three hour differetial would probably be the same but not as dramatic.

Wanna feel good after a loss? Check out THT's team stats. The Jays have 29 Pythagorean wins, 1 behind Chicago and Baltimore for the league lead. Pythagorean wins are the only ones that count for Mick's All-Greek God team, but it would be nice for the non-mythical Jays to find their way to win a few more ordinary ones.

Flying west is best and flying east is least.

I travel alot and loads of inter-continetal trips. There is no doubt in my mind west is best. However I think no matter which way you travel it is always easier to adjust when your at home.

Flex, totally agree with the Campbell comment.

Every fly ball with him seems to be "driven" to the outfield... it gets me excited unitl the ball falls short of the warning track! But other than this "complaint", he's doing a great job!

I wonder what the Jay record is on the day after a direct flight back home from the West Coast.

I don't know how well the numbers actually back it up, but I understand that some serious sports gamblers pay special attention to the "first game back after a Western road trip" or "first game of an Eastern road trip" games. (This may be a hockey-specific thing)

The Indians activated Juan-Gone and designated Ludwick for assignment.

If I'm the Jays I'm putting in a claim for him. Cleveland has been kind enough to re-hab and nurse him all the way back. I think he's ready to pop 20 - 25 bombs.

And yes I know, splits.

Oops, highjack.
Elijah - Tuesday, May 31 2005 @ 03:44 PM EDT (#118246) #
I'd like to get Ludwick as well but I think the Jays problem will be similar to the problem of other covetous teams - who to bump from the 25-man?

As for now, I'd like to see the team go down to 11 pitchers so, as well as he's pitched, Downs is the odd man out. If the team insists on keeping 12 pitchers, I really don't know who the Jays could cut instead. I suppose Menechino could be gone with McDonald being the all-everything infield backup. Ludwick would be able to replace Menechino's bat.

This would be complicated when Koskie returns, however - there would be a good chance that Ludwick would have to be cut at that time unless the team is willing to go down to 11 pitchers. Then again, injuries tend to happen and things may work themselves out.

I don't see Adams or Hill ever going down again. Of course, I would've said the same thing about Dave Bush this season and Jose Cruz back in 1999 as well.
Elijah - Tuesday, May 31 2005 @ 03:48 PM EDT (#118247) #
BTW, this is all speculation. The Royals should claim him and put him in LF every day. But if they pass him up (which wouldn't be shocking - though maybe Buddy Bell will now put in a good word for Ludwick), I would be shocked if Billy Beane doesn't snag him for a return trip to Oakland. So I doubt the Jays will get him even if they wanted to.

Oops, highjack.

Not at all, Lefty. The idea, so much as we have such things, was that the Game Reports would also be the natural home for the General Jays and Baseball talk, as well as reflections, second-guesses, and stuff related to the previous game.

Mick Doherty - Tuesday, May 31 2005 @ 05:04 PM EDT (#118252) #
Second guesses? Here? On Batter's Box? Sir! I am shocked, nay, STUNNED at the mere suggestion!
King Ryan - Tuesday, May 31 2005 @ 05:24 PM EDT (#118255) #
I was at the game last night. Lilly was cruising through the first three innings, throwing only 31 pitches and only 8 balls (4 of them to one batter). Then it looked like he got hit with a comebacker and immediately gave up the bomb to Sexson, then a line drive single, a walk, and more hard hit balls.

I didn't see a replay, so I'm wondering what happened. Did the ball hit him in the arm? I couldn't tell from where I was sitting.
Flex - Tuesday, May 31 2005 @ 06:12 PM EDT (#118257) #
Looked like it hit him on the left knee, King Ryan. Lilly said it didn't hit him square and didn't affect him, but as you say there certainly were a lot of balls hit hard immediately afterwards, so it sure looked like it affected him.

The Indian's have ten days to trade, release or place Ludwick on waivers as I understand it. I guess the benefit of placing on waivers is the team is not on the hook for the contract.

I really don't believe Cleveland wants to loose Ludwick, basically they had to choose between him and Phelps over the winter. Ludwick won that one out.

Then Gonzalez was signed on spec. to a deal hard to complain about.

Ludwick is the odd man out because of financial commitments to Blake and Boone, each of whom clearly should be the ones designated for assignment.

I have been awaiting this numbers crunch since spring training. Crisp, Sizemore, Blake, Gerut, Gonzalez, Boone and Luwick all competeing for virtually the same at bats. Personally I honestly believe Cleveland is making a big mistake. Gonzalez will be gone again, Boone looks completely lost, maybe for good and Blake was never rated, probably played way over his head and is settling back closer to his true ability.

Elijah makes an interesting observation that Ludwick probably won't get past K.C. They designated Marrero today.

Detroit optioned Pena. Getting close to last call for him I guess.
Lefty - Tuesday, May 31 2005 @ 07:03 PM EDT (#118259) #
Further to the above, even the letting Ludwick go does not clear the Cleveland logjam. Once Crisp comes back then they will be faced with another problem.

The pro-active GM might be calling them up to see if theres a way to help them out of some of their talent. They would never trade Sizemore. Crisp, hmm. Some Gerut would be nice though.

I was at the game last night too. It was my first regular season game and it was a great experience. Safeco is a wonderful place to watch a game. We went down early and watched batting practice and managed to get Sparky's autograph.

A few thoughts on the game:

Lilly was cruising until the comebacker right at him. I was amazed that the trainers and Gibbons didn't at least come out and check on him at the time. Rios has lots of power in batting practice and was hitting lots of balls deep in a very spacious ballpark. But, the most impressive BP display (from both teams) was none other than John McDonald, who proceeded to hit a number of balls out.

Mondesi was DFA'd by the braves today. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy.

Whoops, to late. Gonzalez has left the building. An apparent hanstring injury.
