Pelfrey, Romero, Hochevar, Hansen. You're probably familar with the pitchers at the top of the draft, but the draft doesn't end after the first round.

Much like with the hitters last week here's several pitchers that could be available for the Jays to pick in the third round and beyond.

Note - stats are through the games of 5/30.
Kevin Slowey, Winthrop
RHP, 6'3", 190 lbs, 5/4/84
Baseball America Rank: 112

Year	Inn	ERA	K/9	BB/9	HR/9
2005	103.1	2.26	9.3	0.9	0.5
2004	119.2	3.23	7.9	0.8	0.6
2003 93.1	4.44	9.0	1.7	1.2
Control is the specialty here, and it's been there for a couple of years now. Generally you're doing pretty well if your K/BB is over 10. Baseball America says he has '3 solid pitches and mound smarts'. That'll play.
Chris Mason, UNC Greensboro
RHP, 6'0", 170 lbs, 7/1/84
Baseball America Rank: 82

Year Inn	ERA	K/9	BB/9	HR/9
2005	118.2	2.88	10.3	1.8	0.7
2004 53.1	2.36 7.8	3.4	0.2
2003 59.0	4.12 9.6	2.6	0.6
Mason made his way into the rotation in 2005 and excelled. His K rate increased sharply while his walks were almost cut in half. He'll turn 21 in another month.
Matt Green, Lousiana-Monroe
RHP, 6'4", 185 lbs, 1/5/82
Baseball America Rank: 81

Year Inn	ERA	K/9	BB/9	HR/9
2005	105.1	2.65	12.1	2.2	0.3
2004 72.0	5.25 9.0	5.1	0.9
2003 48.0	5.25 8.3	6.4	0.6
Did something click this year to get him to improve his control so dramatically, or is he just taking advantage of being an older college player? Probably a little bit of both. The 12.1 Ks/9 innings is one of the best K rates in college baseball.
Micah Owings, Tulane
RHP, 6'4", 212 lbs, 9/28/82
Baseball America Rank: 142

Year Inn	ERA	K/9	BB/9	HR/9
2005	106.2	3.63	9.9	1.4	0.6
2004	113.1	3.89	8.9	3.4	1.1
2003 88.0	3.99	5.9	2.1	1.2
Owings is a two way player, although most feel his future is better as a pitcher. He transferred to Tulane this past year after playing at Georgia Tech the previous two years. The move seemed to pay off as his K/BB ratio more than double to 7:1.
Jensen Lewis, Vanderbilt
RHP, 6'3", 185 lbs, 5/16/84
Baseball America Rank: 120

Year Inn	ERA	K/9	BB/9	HR/9
2005	92.2	2.62	9.3	2.2	0.4
2004	80.0	3.49	7.8	3.2	0.6
2003	57.0	3.00	9.8	3.2	0.8
Chris Nicoll, UC Irvine
RHP, 6'3", 190 lbs, 10/30/83
Baseball America Rank: 121

Year Inn	ERA	K/9	BB/9	HR/9
2005	111.2	2.50	9.1	1.9	0.4
2004 80.0	3.49	8.0	2.7	0.7
2003 38.0	4.03	8.8	4.3	0.5
Lewis and Nicoll look remarkably similar. Both average more than a strikeout an inning. Both keep the walks and home runs to a minimum. Both play in pitchers parks and both teams play strong schedules.
John Meloan, Arizona
RHP, 6'3", 215 lbs, 7/11/84
Baseball America Rank: 190

Year Inn	ERA	K/9	BB/9	HR/9
2005	102.2	3.77	10.5	4.6	0.4
2004 92.2	4.66 7.5	4.4	1.7
2003 43.1	4.15 8.4	5.8	0.4
Meloan certainly looks like a power pitcher. If you can get a little better control out of him you might be on to something. Arizona plays as one of the most extreme hitter parks in college baseball so the ERA is likely artifically high.

I'll mention it again - John Sickels is having a Community Mock Draft over at his website. Come join in on the fun. At this point we've pretty much decided on the top 6 for the Jays first pick, but rounds 3, 4, and 5 are up for debate. Obviously I like these pitchers and the hitters that I wrote about last week. Anyone else have any prospects that they like?

On Sunday I will be making the selections over at Sickels' site for the Jays. On Monday I'll go over the Mock Draft here to see who I ended up with and why, and how the first round unfolded.

And of course the main event begins on Tuesday, June 7th at noon. We'll have full coverage on the Jays picks as they are made so be sure to check in frequently on Tuesday. As opposed to other drafts the baseball draft moves rapidly. Picks are typically made in less than a minute so the Jays will be picking about every 30 minutes once the third round starts.

Pistol, I just listed my three picks at Nickels' site before coming here and my pick at # 86 was Kyle Slowey.
Paul D - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 01:53 PM EDT (#118340) #
Pistol, I feel somewhat stupid, but I can't find any of the discussion on Sickel's site. All I can find is a thread with one comment from you on how it's not time to discuss rounds 3, 4, and 5.
Where do I look for the earlier discussion?
Pistol - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 01:58 PM EDT (#118341) #
Dean - It's funny, on a scrap piece of paper that I have at my desk I had Danny Powers written down for the fifth round pick of the Jays.

Powers pitches for Central Missouri St, the 'best Division II school of the new millenium'. In 106 innings Powers has 127 Ks, 24 walks, and has allowed 2 HRs. In 17 starts he's 15-1.
Marc Hulet - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 02:00 PM EDT (#118343) #
Pistol, I'll be keeping a close eye on the community draft on Sunday, as I am running the Florida Marlins' draft who have 10 picks in the first five rounds and five before the second round.

I just hope you don't grab the guy I want, as my first pick is not until 16th overall!
Pistol - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 02:01 PM EDT (#118344) #
Paul - On the right sidebar of Sickels' site there's links to a bunch of diaries. You can adjust how many diaries that you see (up to 50), or you click on the 'recent diaries' link at the bottom of the sidebar. Right now the discussion of the first pick is #44.

Hopefully this link will take you directly there:

May I ask 2 stupid questions....

1. Why do the Jays seem to not have a second round pick?
2. Did the Jays get a compensatory pick for losing Delgado like we did last year (when we took ZachJack?)
Max Parkinson - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 03:13 PM EDT (#118351) #
Maldoff,

We didn't offer Delgado arbitration, so there's no comp pick.
Marc Hulet - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 03:13 PM EDT (#118352) #
1. The Jays lost pick 2 for Koskie.

2. The Jays did not receive compensation for losing Delgado because they did not offer him arbitration.

Max Parkinson - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 03:14 PM EDT (#118353) #
For the sake of those bothered by the vernacular, let me restate...

THE JAYS didn't offer Delgado arbitration, so they don't get a comp pick.
Pistol - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 03:15 PM EDT (#118354) #
The Jays also got the pick that was used on Adam Lind in the third round when when Escobar signed with the Angels (in addition to Jackson).
Dean - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 05:58 PM EDT (#118366) #
Green lasting to the 86th pick would be good. The #86 prospect on the BA 200 list, Donald Veal, is much more of a project as his secondary pitches need work but at the same time would be a power lefty. I don't think signability is a concern either.
Jim - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 07:22 PM EDT (#118375) #
JP, I know we are on the same page with Gaudin. I also know you like to scout New England.

How about Ryan DiPietro from Eastern Connnecticut State. He was the top DIII draft prospect before the season. Didn't go to the post season, so they didn't even abuse his arm that bad.

Kevin Slowey
Winthrop U RHP R/R 6'3" 190 1984-05-04 4YR
COMMENT: Good strength for a pitcher. Attacks strike zone w/ all pitches. Can put FB on either side of the plate w/ some late sink. Nice CB that can throw for strikes. Slider has some quick bite to it. A clever, methodical control pitcher.

Christopher Mason
UNC Greensboro RHP R/R 6'0" 185 1984-07-01 4YR
COMMENT: Medium frame. Well-defined upper body. Live arm. Good FB instints. Throws four pitches. Gutsy competitor. Lets it all hang out. Stuff and personality to succeed in the right role.

Matthew Green
U Louisiana Monroe RHP R/R 6'5" 195 1982-01-05 4YR
COMMENT: Medium, large frame. Well proportioned body. Good pitcher's build. Similar to Jason Schmidt. Live arm. Good mechanics in delivery. FB has late sinking life down, rides in on RHH up. Circle change very effective when down in zone. Big league arm.

Micah Owings
Tulane U RHP R/R 6'5" 220 1982-09-28 4YR
COMMENT: Has the arm to develop into a closer at the ML level. FB is riding w/ sinking life, late tail action and is very effective against LHH. Possesses tight slider, circle change-up as a third pitch. Built like Kris Benson. Power-hitting prospect.

Jensen Lewis
Vanderbilt U RHP R/R 6'3" 185 1984-05-16 4YR
COMMENT: Body similar to Orel Hersheiser. Establishes FB and goes after strike zone. Pitches, mixes it up. Slurve-CB occassionally tight, late life w/ some down bite. Fade change w/ arm speed best pitch, spots it, throws anytime. Pitchability is his strength.

Christopher Nicoll
UC Irvine RHP R/R 6'2" 190 1983-10-30 4YR
COMMENT: Lean, well-proportioned athletic body. Still has room to grow. Delivery is smooth, easy and deliberate. FB tails a little into RHH. A short, quick 3/4 slider is his best breaking pitch. Mixes pitches and changes speeds well. Good competitor on the mound.

Jonathan Meloan
U Arizona RHP R/R 6'3" 225 1984-07-11 4YR
COMMENT: Massive physical specimen. Country strong. Pitches aggressively. FB touches 90, can put it anywhere he wants. Out pitch is a big CB w/ late bite.

Back to the first round for just a second. Does anyone else feel like there is a dropoff after the first 5 picks (assuming it goes in some order: Upton, Maybin, Tulo, Zimmerman, Gordon)? Or would I feel like there was a dropoff at 8 if the Jays were picking there?

Craig B - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 11:02 PM EDT (#118388) #
Tulowitzki? Paul McAnulty's bat and Russ Adams's glove? That's not a top 5 draft pick.
Jim - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 11:08 PM EDT (#118389) #
I got the impression from the last few Jim Callis chats that Tulo has a chance to go in the top 5.
Craig B - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 11:10 PM EDT (#118390) #
Upton and Maybin and Gordon, I think, are three top players. After that, there's about a dozen guys who are perfectly good, and the Jays will probably get one of those players.
Craig B - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 11:11 PM EDT (#118391) #
Oh yeah, he does. Don't get me wrong - that's how he's seen. I just don't think Tulowitzki's skills are going to translate, especially with the stick.
Jim - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 11:14 PM EDT (#118392) #
I'd say that I agree with Upton, Maybin and Gordon as 1,2,3. I do like Zimmerman at the front of the second tier. I wish there was a bat that really stood out at the 6th pick. Everything I hear about Romero sounds great, but it would be nice to have one hitter in the system who really generates some excitement.
Craig B - Wednesday, June 01 2005 @ 11:30 PM EDT (#118395) #
Yeah, it's too bad that there aren't any real top-notch power hitters other than Gordon (and Maybin) in the draft this year.
Pistol - Thursday, June 02 2005 @ 12:59 AM EDT (#118399) #
"Does anyone else feel like there is a dropoff after the first 5 picks"

I think there's a dropoff after #1 (Upton), a dropoff after #2 (Gordon), and then #3-10 (give or take a couple) are similar.

Pittsburg news article on who the pirates will draft

http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05153/514430.stm

"In the six previous years, the Pirates had taken a pitcher in the first round, including three consecutive college pitchers from 2001-03.

If they go that route again, left-hander Ricky Romero from Cal State-Fullerton is a strong probability -- "if he gets past Toronto," a major-league scouting director said.

The Blue Jays, who select sixth, are known to have strong interest in Romero, 12-4 with a 2.80 earned run average for the Titans."

I know it's not a scoop, just posting it because Romero is still being associated with the Jays pick at this late date.
Jay - Thursday, June 02 2005 @ 01:07 PM EDT (#118440) #
From all I've seen and heard, I along with many others on this site like Maybin and am more intrigued by that pick than another lefty even if Romero is better than ZachJack and Purcey. Every major news service has the Jay's pretty much locked into Romero right now. I've read here in the past that when some of the bauxites sat down with JP he never dismissed taking a high profile high-schooler like Maybin. For those of you with any insight, do you think there is any chance JP grabs Maybin instead of Romero with the 6 pick assuming both are still there (which I think they will)? Let's say it's a two person field right now and JP only has Maybin and Romero to choose from, what is the probability you think for each?
Gerry - Thursday, June 02 2005 @ 01:14 PM EDT (#118441) #
If the Jays think Maybin can be in the big leagues in two years they would look at him, if not then it will be a college player. The Jays would take Upton because they believe he can make it in two years.
Pistol - Thursday, June 02 2005 @ 01:32 PM EDT (#118444) #
From Dr Prison Fence's draft article:

.....That group of picks is a disparate bunch, and Ricciardi wouldn't rule out anything this year.

"We're thinking of the best guy available," he said. "Most likely college, but there are a couple high school guys that have jumped up and gotten our attention. There are guys we'd have some interest in."

Upton would obviously be 1, but if there's 2 HS players the Jays were considering at the top I imagine Maybin would be #2. It sounds like it hasn't been ruled out.

Stellers Jay - Thursday, June 02 2005 @ 02:24 PM EDT (#118446) #
I'm not sure he'll last until the 6th pick. But, I think they will regret it in 5 years if they pass on Maybin IF (and its a big one) that he's still there.
Marc Hulet - Thursday, June 02 2005 @ 03:17 PM EDT (#118452) #
If Seattle doesn't take him, I'm betting that Milwaukee does, although I would love to see Maybin in a Jays' uniform. As much as I like Romero, I think the Jays could really, really use an impact bat.
Pistol - Friday, June 03 2005 @ 05:47 PM EDT (#118572) #
From today's BA chat:

Allan Simpson: I'm told the Blue Jays are looking seriously at four players they expect to be available at No. 6: Ricky Romero, Wade Townsend, Jeff Clement and Maybin. Of course, that assumes Upton, Gordon, Tulowitzki and Zimmerman are gone. I've J.P.'s choice would be Romero.
