I don't know if Casey Janssen is related to David Janssen who played Dr. Richard Kimble on the old "The Fugitive" TV show, but there was no search for a one-armed man yesterday as the two arms of Janssen and Eric Arnold led Dunedin to victory. Syracuse had no offense, New Hampshire pulled one out in the ninth behind a spot start by Jamie Vermilyea, Lansing had the offense but poor pitching. A 2-2 Sunday on the farm.

Syracuse 0 Louisville 5

With David Bush moving down and Shaun Marcum moving up this might have been Chris Baker's last start for a while and it did not start well, the first three hitters singled to make it 1-0 Louisville. But Baker got a double play ball from Edwin Encarnacion and escaped the first with just the one run deficit. Baker allowed a two out double in the second but then retired ten in a row until Kenny Kelly led off the sixth with a home run to make it 2-0. Meanwhile Syracuse could get nothing going against knuckleballer Jared Fernandez. John Schneider doubled with two out in the third, Julius Matos singled with two out in the sixth, and John Hattig doubled with two out in the seventh, those were the only three hits off Fernandez. Syracuse had a chance against Louisville's bullpen in the eighth, Anton French singled with one out and Schneider walked but Schneider was thrown out on the back end of a double steal. Jason Arnold and Jesse Carlson allowed three runs in the eighth, in part due to an error by Bryant Nelson. Another disappointing offensive performance by Syracuse, but a good start from Chris Baker

Game Story

New Hampshire 4 New Britain 3

It was Shaun Marcum's turn to start but he is now in AAA and Zach Jackson had pitched on thursday so Jamie Vermilyea got the spot start. Vermilyea was good but not great as he pitched six innings allowing one run. New Britain had nine hits, but no walks, off Vermilyea with the run and three hits coming with two outs in the sixth as Jamie ran out of gas. New Hampshire had a 3-0 lead going into the bottom of that sixth inning, scoring twice in the fourth and one more in the sixth. The two runs in the fourth came on singles by Ron Acuna and Justin Singleton and a double from Vito Chiaravalloti. Bubbie Buzachero pitched a scoreless seventh but allowed back to back jacks in the eighth to tie the game. In the top of the ninth Miguel Negron singled and stole second, and with two out Ron Acuna singled on a slow roller to second and the winning run scored when the second baseman threw it away. Lee Gronkiewicz finished out for his fifteenth save.

Negron, Acuna, Singleton and Brad Hassey had two hits each.

Game Story

Vero Beach 1 Dunedin 8

Dunedin scored four runs in the first inning and with Casey Janssen on the mound that was more than enough. Eric Arnold hit a three run home run in the bottom of the first after Jayce Tingler singled and Adam Lind was hit by a pitch. Joey Reiman followed with a double and Tim Whittaker a single to make it 4-0. Janssen struck out five hitters in the first two innings, had a rough inning in the fourth when Vero Beach scored a run on three hits and a hit batter, but then retired the last ten hitters he faced. Dunedin tacked on four more in the sixth, starting with a solo home run by Arnold. That was followed by three hits, two walks and an error that produced three more runs. Justin James and Brad Mumma pitched two shutout innings in relief of Janssen.

Arnold was the offensive star, his two runs and four RBI's led the team. Tingler also had two hits.

Lansing 7 Kane County 10

Russell Savickas made his first start for the Lugnuts and looked good for three innings, but in the fourth the first five hitters reached base and Savickas left with four runs in. Po-Hsuan Keng came on to allow a three run home run, and a solo home run the next inning.

Lansing scored three runs in the second inning, Yuber Rodriguez tripled in two and scored on a single by Juan Peralta. The Lugnuts added four in the seventh, three of them on a home run by Chip Cannon. But Kane County added runs in the eighth off Daryl Harang and that was enough. Curtis Thigpen, the day after going 4-4 to hit .300 on the season, went 0-5. Juan Peralta had three hits.

With the arrivals of Gross, Bush and Marcum, Syracuse should be in good shape for a little while. They still need a 4A right-handed bat, with the departure of Hill.

I obtained a list of all the players currently on the extended spring training roster are there are some names missing from last year's organizational roster, who appear to have been let go:

Vinny Esposito, 3B
Jarad Mangioni, OF
Greg Powers, IF
Bryon Bell, RHP
Michael Rider, RHP
Dewon Day (injured), RHP
Chad Mulholland (TJ recovery), RHP
Jayson Rodriguez (injured), RHP

The most notable names include LHP Matt Foster, who probably still has not been cleared to play by the US Navy, Canadian Bryon Bell and Australian Jarad Mangioni, who I thought had a lot of potential. He actually had a great off-season pitching out of the bullpen in Australia's biggest country-wide baseball tournament.

There are also quite a few players (pitchers and hitters) from last year's Dominican Summer League team vying for a couple visas. A lot of left-handed pitchers.

Hey Marc, any update on McGowan from extended spring training? I know a lot of people around here would be interested to get a progress report on him.
Marc Hulet - Monday, May 30 2005 @ 11:49 AM EDT (#118098) #
No update on McGowan... he is listed on Syracuse's roster (albeit on the disabled list) and I think the plan is still to have him start at Dunedin shortly.

Day and Rodriguez are listed on the Lansing Roster - as being on the Disabled List. I guess that's why they aren't on the EST list. If I remember correctly, Powers was suspended for "illegal substances" along with Tablado and Reed at the beginning of the season. That may have something to do with his absence from the list.
Marc Hulet - Monday, May 30 2005 @ 12:14 PM EDT (#118106) #
Powers was re-instated last month though, and should have appeared on the list if he were still in the organization, but he could have been omitted accidentally like you said.

By the way, I may have missed this in all the hustle and bustle - but not counting the Gaudin/Bush move, Syracuse added two people this weekend (Gross and Marcum)..... who got the boot?

Age: 21 Signed: 2004
Repertoire:

Notes: Stats from 2004 Dominican Summer League

This is a kid who I think should be starting for Auburn this year. He seems to have a slight frame but I believe he could be better than Ricky Romero who the Jays have been linked to in the draft.

I wouldn't be surprised to see Aguirre get a look. I seem to recall that he was mentioned in BA as throwing in the low 90's. His size, age and being a lefty are big positives.

Benson the ambidextrous Australian pitcher is an example of Moneyball at work. Imagine the value of having one pitcher as 2/5 of your rotation!

How many visas are available for foreign players?
Marc Hulet - Monday, May 30 2005 @ 03:20 PM EDT (#118142) #
Catcher Jonathan Jaspe is considered a good prospect too and Jesus Gonzalez had some nice numbers at third base. I'm not sure about the visa situation... but there aren't that many and Benson will be using one for sure.

May 25: New Law Opens Door For Foreign Players
by J.J. Cooper

Thanks to a new law, the draft outlook for Canadian players and other foreign citizens who are playing college ball in the U.S. just got a whole lot brighter.

The Save Our Small and Seasonal Businesses Act was signed into law by President Bush on May 11, effectively freeing up 35,000 temporary work visas. That gives major league teams a chance to apply for new visas for foreign players beginning on May 25.

Jonny Gomes hit a solo homer off Marcum in the top of the 2nd. 1-0 Durham after 1 and a half. Marcum's pace is excellent and his control is, as usual, sharp.
Mike Green - Monday, May 30 2005 @ 06:43 PM EDT (#118179) #
The Chiefs rallied for 3 runs in the bottom of the frame. John-ford Griffin worked a walk off a lefty, while Julius Matos and Jason Alfaro had the big hits.

The first hitter of the top of the 3rd, old friend Kevin Cash, took a Marcum fastball deep.
Gerry - Monday, May 30 2005 @ 08:45 PM EDT (#118188) #
Marcum's line 6.1IP 6H 4ER 1BB 9K

Marcum left the game up 5-2, with runners on first and second. Carlson gave up a homer to the first hitter he saw, making it 4 ER for Marcum.

Gross hit home run #2.

Game tied at 5 heading for the ninth.
