Tough times continue in Syracuse. New Hampshire didn't hit, Dunedin didn't pitch. Lansing salvaged one win for the minor league affiliates, thanks to Yates and his cast of characters. (I am posting this early because it is done, I will add links on Monday morning)

Game 1 - Syracuse 2 Rochester 4

The Chiefs scored first when Chad Mottola and John- Ford Griffin doubled back to back to lead off the second inning off Boof Bonser. Griffin was stranded at second. Chad Gaudin started game one and allowed a Todd Dunwoody home run in the bottom of the second. Griffin hit another double in the fourth to score Aaron Hill who had been hit by a pitch. Rochester answered with the tying run in the fifth on a pair of singles and a wild pitch.

Rochester won the game in the bottom of the sixth. Gaudin allowed the dreaded lead off walk to Terry Tiffee. A bunt moved the runner to second and rather than pitch again to Todd Dunwoody the Chiefs walked him to put two runners on with one out. Justin Miller replaced Gaudin and got the second out on a fly ball and thought he had the third out on a ground ball to Bryant Nelson, but Nelson booted it and the go ahead run scored. A single then scored an insurance run. The Chiefs had five hits in the game, 2 by Griffin; Aaron Hill had a double in addition to being hit.

Game 2 - Syracuse 1 Rochester 9

Francisco Rosario started the second game and his day was done in the third inning. The first five hitters in the second inning recorded hits off Rosario including two home runs. After Rosario walked two hitters in the third he was pulled. Rosario's line was 2.2 innings, four runs, on six hits and four walks. Chris Baker fanned the flames allowing five runs in the fourth and it was a 9-1 game.

Aaron Hill was the lone bright spot, he singled in the first and homered in the third, and even reached on a strikeout. Syracuse had six hits in the game, Hill was the only hitter with two, and the only hitter with an extra base hit.

New Hampshire 1 New Britain 5

Vince Perkins had his worst start of the year as he allowed three runs in five innings on 8 hits and 2 walks, with only one strikeout. Vince also had two wild pitches. Bubbie Buzachero gave up a walk and a hit to start the sixth and then he was pulled for John Ogiltree. Ogiltree conceded a double, scoring both runs and making it a 5-1 game. The Fisher Cats had scored their run in the fourth on back to back singles by Maikel Jova and Ron Davenport, followed by a fly ball and a ground out.

New Hampshire had four hits, none for extra bases, Davenport had two.

Game Story

Dunedin 6 Tampa 8

Twenty seven hits in this game, 13 for Dunedin. Tampa scored four off Michael MacDonald and led 4-0 after five. Mac Donald was done after five innings having allowed nine hits and a walk in his five innings. Dunedin scored a run on two hits in the sixth and tied the game with three runs in the seventh. Scott Dragicevich and Jason Waugh singled; Manny Mayorson doubled to drive in one, and Jayce Tingler singled to drive in two.

But the lead off hitter in the bottom of the seventh homered off Tracey Thorpe. After another double off Thorpe, Danny Core came on to surrender another home run and make it a 7-4 game. Tampa added another in the eighth and Dunedin scored twice in the ninth.

Dragicevich, Waugh, Mayorson and Tingler had two hits each. Adam Lind went 1-3 with a walk to keep his average at .359.

Lansing 11 Dayton 4

Lansing had the bats working big time in this game scoring six runs in the first two innings. Ryan Klosterman started the game with a double and Chip Cannon added his sixth home run in the first. In the second three hits and two walks led to the three runs. Kyle Yates had his best start of the year, throwing six shutout innings with seven K's. Three hits and three walks were the only blemishes on his record.

Eric Nielsen hit his fourth home run while Yuber Rodriguez hit his first. Juan Peralta had three hits, Cannon and Ontario native David Corrente had two each.

Your Three Star Selection

Third star - Aaron Hill reached base twice in each end of the DH with a double and a homer

Nice to see Hill is performing well at the plate so far. Gerry, how's his D? I heard he was shaky last season and I'm hoping he has improved in that area.

With Koskie at 3B, Adams at SS, and Hudson at 2B, it will be interesting to see how Hill fits into the mix.

All young shortstops make a lot of errors, see Russ Adams, so its hard just to look at Hill's 8 errors so far and suggest anything from that. Hill's reputation is that his range is less than Adams but his arm is stronger. A blend of Adams' range and Hill's arm would be ideal. In my opinion if the Jays are happy with Adams at short they move Hill to second, if they are not happy with Adams they move him.

Wow, I didn't realize Hill was doing quite this well: .329/.379/.541 (14th in the IL in average and 18th in slugging).

And just thumbing through the IL leaderboards it looks like Brian Daubach is this year's Calvin Pickering. He's hitting .387/.441/.753.

Yesterday in New Britain, Vince Perkins went only 5 innings and took the loss in a 5-1 defeat to the Rock Cats. Vince  gave up 8 hits, one of them a homer to Luis Jimenez, and 3 earned runs. He only had one strikeout and walked two.

According to the Dunedin website Justin James will start today. Kurt Isenberg would have been the normal starter in this spot. I don't know if it is injury related or some other issue. Kurt's last start was his worst of the year.

Maybe Kurt was experiencing pain or stiffness. It would explain the downturn the last start.

Hill is doing quite well as expected. The Syracuse hitting coach is preaching a more aggressive approach which basically says swing at the first good pitch you see and don't get yourself in a two strike count where a pitcher can go to his out pitch.

I'm not sure I agree with that philosophy because it's just as easy to get yourself out by swinging at borderline pitches. But what it has done is force guys like Hill and Griffin to be in a swing mode and connect well so far though it hasn't helped Griffin's strikeout rate any. Hill has 10 k and 4 bb in 85 at bats.

Gross started slowly and seemed to recover but his average has dipped back down to .236 with 0 homeruns in in 72 at bats (9 bb, 15 k). Did his approach fall out of whack between the spring, Toronto, and AAA? Or is this just a natural slump?

Hey, do any Ottawa Bauxites want to catch Syracuse at Ottawa this week? I don't have the schedule for who is starting but there is a four game set this week, Tuesday to Friday @ 6:05. I have fairly firm plans for Tuesday but other days work for me (Friday is definitely best though).
Mike Green - Monday, May 02 2005 @ 05:53 PM EDT (#114925) #
It turns out that they're playing a double dip in Tampa. The D-Jays lead 2-0 in Game 1 with Isenberg on the mound. Presumably Justin James will get the call in the nightcap.

Hey Mark,

I'm down, I also owe Jordan a beer. Drop me a line (either of you).

Which starter do you want to see?
Mark J - Monday, May 02 2005 @ 06:59 PM EDT (#114946) #
Those pesky gambling debts ;)

Do you have a link to the starters this week? I'm not picky though.

I won't be at any of the games in Ottawa, but something tells me that Thursday would be the best game to attend...

Who is pitching for Syracuse? (Better, how do I find out for myself?)
Gerry - Monday, May 02 2005 @ 10:23 PM EDT (#115088) #
Normal rotation is League - Tuesday; Glynn - Wednesday; Downs - Thursday; Gaudin - Friday; and Rosario - Saturday.

I will be at the Lansing game tonight. Like kpataky did, I will try to get a few pictures for you guys. Especially of box favorite Chip Cannon.
