The Jays were off on Monday literally, their farm system figuratively, as the minor leaguers were beaten 4 out of 5.

Syracuse 1 @ Scranton/W-B 4

Scanton/Wilkes-Barre’s first 3 hitters were good for 3 runs and that proved to be plenty as the Syracuse bats were very quiet this night. Francisco Rosario gave up a leadoff double, then watched 3B Jason Alfaro misplay a sacrifice bunt attempt to put runners on the corners. The next batter homered to left and that was that. Rosario settled down nicely and ended up with a 6-inning line showing 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits, 2 walks, 2 strikeouts, and 2 hit batsmen. Jesse Carlson pitched 2 scoreless innings in relief.

1B Eric Crozier scored the only SkyChief run when he doubled in the 3rd and was brought home by 2B Bryant Nelson’s RBI single. Nelson had 2 singles on the night, joining CF Anton French (double and walk) as the only Chiefs to reach base twice. Aaron Hill rode the pines for a second straight game, while John-Ford Griffin went 0 for 3.

Harrisburg 7 @ New Hampshire 0

The Senators laid a beating on the Fisher Cats as Cam Reimers was torched for 6 earned on 7 hits in just 2-2/3. Jamie Vermilyea came on to strand Reimer’s last runner at 2nd and put together a very nice 4-1/3 relief stint, no runs on 4 hits, 4/1 K/BB. This is the second consecutive Reimers start where Vermilyea has pitched 4+ innings in relief. A tandem starter arrangement?

Striking out 13 times and getting shut out, there wasn’t much positive about the New Hampshire offence. RF Mikael Jova managed a double and a single, while 3B Rob Cosby reached twice with a base knock and a base on balls.

Dunedin 0 @ Lakeland 10

An ugly night for the D-Jays in Lakeland as Zach Jackson was pounded for 9 runs (8 earned) on 10 hits in 3-2/3. On the sunny side of the street, he struck out 3 and issued no walks. Justin James was sharp in relief, allowing 1 run on 3 hits in 3-1/3 and replicating the good part of Jackson’s line, the 3/0 K/BB. Milton Tavarez finished up with a scoreless inning.

Dunedin hitters could muster just 5 singles and 1 walk off Virgil Vasquez. Leadoff man and centrefielder Jayce Tingler had two of those, while Adam Lind kept his streak going with a base knock in 3 trips before being lifted for a pinch hitter.

Cedar Rapids 5 @ Lansing 4 (Game 1)
Cedar Rapids 2 @ Lansing 7 (Game 2)

After snow and cold kept them off the field the previous two days, the Kernels and Lugnuts played two 7-inning affairs and took one each. In the first game, Aaron Wideman pitched well enough through 5 innings, allowing 2 runs, but things fell apart in the 6th. A leadoff triple was cashed by a groundout, and a walk to the next batter saw Wideman lifted in favour of Jordy Templet. Templet promptly served a gopher ball for the tying and winning runs. SS Ryan Klosterman had the biggest Lugnut hit, smacking a double with the bases loaded in the 4th to drive in 3.

Kyle Yates turned in a solid 6 innings for the win in the night cap, allowing 2 runs on 8 hits while striking out just 1 but not walking anybody. Joey McLaughlin tossed the final frame. Offensively, Chip Cannon launched a 3-run shot, while LF Luke Hetherington and Klosterman each drove in 2. CF Yuber Rodriguez was 1 of 5 on the night, with a walk.

Does anybody know why Hill has been sitting on the bench in Syracuse? Is he nursing an injury? Isn't he the type of prospect that should be playing every day to encourage his development?
Gerry - Tuesday, April 26 2005 @ 09:54 AM EDT (#113626) #
Hill must have a slight injury. According to the pbp in Mondays thread Hill was originally in the lineup then pulled. It was a cold night at the park and teams usually are cautious with muscle strains in cold weather.

It sounds like Rosario is still working on his delivery and control. Several of the Jays power pitching prospects are working on the same thing, Rosario, Perkins and Purcey are each trying to cut down on walks, wild pitches and hit batters so they can hit their spots. If they cannot start to hit their spots they could end up as Billy Koch!

Tonight, Dunedin (McDonald) faces Lakeland (Bumstead- presumably not Dagwood). New Hampshire (Marcum) hosts Harrisburg at 6:35.

Rosario also has the problem of giving up too many homeruns and hard hit balls for a guy with his stuff. So he has a problem either with flat pitches or poor location or both. You don't want to see a guy with a 94 mph moving fastball, great changeup, and decent curve get hit so hard. Command still appears to be a problem for him.
R Billie - Tuesday, April 26 2005 @ 12:20 PM EDT (#113649) #
Jackson hasn't had a lot of professional innings but he sure has gotten hit very often so far. This Lakeland squad wasn't that talented. They were handled by the relievers just fine. He hasn't shown that his stuff is good enough to get by despite having decent command which isn't encouraging. It's not a lot of innings but 8 or 9 runs allowed in the FSL is just plain ugly for any pitcher. Is he completely healthy?

This just brings up a personal preference of mine. If I'm picking early in the supplemental round I would rather look for a RHP who throws low-to-mid 90s than a LHP who throws high 80s as I'm guessing Jackson does. I don't care which arm the pitcher throws with if I plan to use him as a starter.

I've never understood the cache that lefthanders have over righthanders, particularly in the draft where they can bound way up in the rankings just because of the hand they throw with. Performance is performance. Ted Lilly isn't helping the Jays this year by being lefthanded if he keeps performing like he has been.

Dunedin are playing a rare noon game today. Middle of the second and there is no score. Dunedin had one hit in the first inning by - can you guess? Aw you are too good, yes it was Adam Lind. Plus Lind had a stolen base, how about that?

Statistically, Jackson was every bit as good as Purcey in college. His fastball is 88-93 according to his BA scouting report.

He's only pitched 19 innings so far, I wouldn't worry too much about him yet. It could simply be a matter of luck with him right now.

FWIW:
Purcey - 20 innings, 27 baserunners, 1.80 ERA
Jackson - 19.3 innings, 28 baserunners, 7.45 ERA.

Here is an interesting pinch-hit concerning Zach Jack from June, 2004. His performance during the end of his college year in 2004 and since then has me worried.

4-3 Lakeland over Dunedin after seven. MacDonald allowed 8 hits and 2 walks in 5.2 innings. Four of the hits were doubles and one of the runs was unearned.

Adam Lind has 2 more hits, David Smith is hot right now and he is 3-3. John Schneider is 2-3 with a HR.

If league started, he got pounded, cheifs down 3-0 in second, griffin just grounded out

Listening to WFBL here, The Bisons just scored their third run, and they have not hit anything hard -- a lot of bloopers and just-made-contacts, I'm told. A double play liner right back to League, scored 1-3, ends the inning. Four hits in the inning, 3-0 Buffalo after 1.5.

League's apparently missing outside to lefthanded batters often. And Aaron Hill is back in the lineup, a good sign.

Big shakeup today. Huckaby was called up the majors, Greg Myers was released, and apparently Ismael Ramirez went on the injured list. Anyone know what's wrong with him? Also, anyone know what the deal is for replacements?

I'm actually done -- I was just checking in with League, not doing a whole BBRadio game.

After all, I have to eat now, then Jays vs Rays at 7.

dominique a one out walk, french singles, next guy hits an infield pop out...infield fly rule, but no one catches it, 2 out. Gross up (double first at bat).. lunges for strike three, and Chefs go down.

Syracuse come back to lead 9-7. The first five hitters in the lineup each have two hits. French, Gross, Crtozier and Mottola have gone deep, Griffin has 5 Ribbies.

Lansing win game 1, 13-2, Patton and Cannon go deep.

Fisher Cats winning 3-1, Marcum has allowed two hits, one a home run, through 6 innings.

After Justin Miller surrendered a 2 run homer in the top of the ninth, the Chiefs and Bisons were tied at 9s, but Aaron Hill's walk-off homer in the ninth ended it.

Chi-Hung Cheng struck out 7 (but walked 4) in 4.2 innings in the opener in Lansing. It was an unusual decision to remove him with a very big lead and needing 1 out for the win.

There is an audio discussion on minorleaguebaseball.com about various Jays prospects. Nothing really earth shattering, but interesting to hear. It should be in the Multimedia links section at the top of the main page.
