The Skychiefs had the night off as the farm teams went 1-2.

Syracuse – Day off

The Skychiefs didn’t play last night, but they did learn of a rather important roster change. They lost their closer Matt Whiteside to the parent club, but gained yet another arm for the rotation in Brandon League. (Thanks Magpie and Pistol)

New Hampshire 4, Harrisburg 5

Vince Perkins experienced his first hiccup in what has been an otherwise excellent start to the season. Perkins was hit early in this one as a home run scored 2 in the first and a lead off double came around to score in the second inning. From there, Perkins went wild as he walked 4 of the next 7 batters. But, on this night at least, it seemed to work as Perkins escaped the jams and made it through 4 innings striking out 5 including the final 3 batters he faced.

The Fisher Cats clawed back in the fifth inning after Carlo Cota hit a three run shot and Raul Tablado added an RBI single to take the lead. Josue Matos relieved Perkins in the fifth, retiring the first nine batters he faced including 4 strikeouts. But a leadoff single in the eighth would go on to haunt Matos as reliever Steve Andrade was unable to hold the inherited runner. With the game tied 4-4 after eight, Andrade reaped what he had sowed as a leadoff single in the ninth came around to score after Andrade had been replaced by Jordan De Jong. Andrade was charged with both the blown save and the loss.

Dunedin 6, Lakeland 5

Zach Jackson pitched 4 very strong innings. Unfortunately, he also threw one poor one as 5 straight hits resulted in 4 runs charged against the first rounder. ZachJack finished his outing with 6 hits, 5 K’s, no walks and just the 4 runs charged against him.

The Baby Jays fought back, sparked by Ryan Roberts’ solo home run, to tie the game at 4 apiece. Danny Core gave up a solo shot to hand the lead back to Lakeland, but a ninth inning rally put the Jays on top for good. Clint Johnston hit a ground-rule RBI double followed by Robinson Diaz’ second RBI single of the night.

West Michigan 9, Lansing 2

Ok, so Chi-Hung Cheng wasn’t really missing. But he was mistakenly listed as the expected starter for the Lugnuts. Instead, it was Kyle Yates’ turn to take on Lansing’s intra-state rivals. Everything was going smoothly for the Nuts early on as the big Lug, Chip Cannon, opened the scoring with solo home run. Like Jackson, Yates’ pitched splendidly, aside from a 5 hit inning in which 3 runs were scored.

From that rough sixth inning onward, the game went down hill for Lansing. Mark Sopko took the biggest hit as he was charged with 5 runs in 1 2/3 innings and Daryl Harang was charged with another run as the Lugnuts were thoroughly beaten 9-2.

Boxscore - MinorLeagueBaseball.com. Recap - Lansing State Journal

Your Three-Star Selection!

The Third Star: Josue Matos, New Hampshire.

The Second Star: Kyle Yates, Lansing.

The First Star: Robinson Diaz, Dunedin.

Adam Lind went 1-3 with 2 walks for the D-Jays. He's hitting .383/.415/.596 to start the season with 4 walks and 4 Ks in 51 PAs. In the FSL, that's a great start, particularly after skipping a level. Lind is only 21.

Pistol - Wednesday, April 20 2005 @ 12:03 PM EDT (#112841) #
For those that think the Jays pick from a spreadsheet Lind is a good example of a 'scout' pick. His stats at South Alabama certainly didn't warrant a third round pick (although he hit well in the Cape League).

New Hampshire's off to an ugly start today. It's 6-1 Harrisburg in the Top of the 2nd. Raul Tablado has just scored the only run on Jose Umbria's first hit of the year.
R Billie - Wednesday, April 20 2005 @ 01:11 PM EDT (#112853) #
Adam Lind is looking like the Jeremy Reed of 2004. A guy who flew under the radar as a hitter and ended up being a steal beyond the first round. Reed was picked in 2002 in the second round (after the Jays picked Adams and Bush) so he was picked earlier but is a much better defensive player.

Lind looks like he'll be a better overall hitter though he hasn't shown Reed's patience. He's a pure hitter though and if he develops even modest power he'll be a nice steal for the Jays even if he's limited to first base or DH. He's shown nice pop so far for a guy who doesn't strikeout much.

Perkins' start looked more like the starts he had in A-ball when he'd walk a lot of people and pitch himself out of a game early. Someone mentioned in a previous thread that he was relying mostly on the fastball and a lot of hitters were chasing out of the zone. If that's true then his good start may have been somewhat deceptive. He'll get there eventually.
R Billie - Wednesday, April 20 2005 @ 01:16 PM EDT (#112854) #
BTW, from the title of this thread I thought the reason that Cheng missed his start was because he was in an accident. :)

Rosario
League
Gaudin
Miller
Baker

That's a pretty nice AAA rotation. Then you have Banks, Marcum, and Perkins right behind them and McGowan still rehabbing. It's nice to have depth.

http://www.gerrymcdonald.ca/depthchart.htm

I updated the depth chart, link above. I assumed that Justin Miller would pitch in relief and that Scott Downs would stay in the rotation. We will have to see.

Also when Baker made his first start in Buffalo Marty Pevey made sure we knew it was a spot start, Glynn and Miller were supposed to be in the rotation. So my 5 starters are:

Rosario
League
Glynn
Downs
Gaudin

Not a great day for the F-Cats, they lost 9-3 to Harrisburg in an afternoon game in Pennsylvania. Jose Umbria broke out with a 2-for-3 day with an RBI. Raul Tablado was 1-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI. Kevin Barker was 1-for-2 with a walk and RBI. Miguel Negron was 1-for-3 with a run scored but committed an error. Carlo Cota committed the other error. Cameron Reimers got lit up for 7 runs, 4 earned in 4 IP. Jamie Vermilyea finished up with the other 4 IP in relief, giving up 2 runs. If the first inning didn't count, the game would've been an extra innings affair as Harrisburg scored 6 on their first at-bat.
R Billie - Wednesday, April 20 2005 @ 05:12 PM EDT (#112868) #
Miller started and was relieved by Glynn a few days ago. I'm not sure if Glynn is going back to the rotation but I think Miller is staying there.

I think that JP has said two of his favourite players from the last draft are Lind and Thigpen, so its good to see them doing so well. That Lind is only 21 also bodes well.

Some intermittent Triple-A BBRadio here:

With two outs in the top of the first, Gabe Gross fouled off pitch after pitch, then doubled to the gap. Chad Mottola got himself in an 0-2 hole, but hit it deep to left field, and it's gone! Right over the wall, just past Dave Berg's glove in LF. Yes, Dave Berg.

2-0 for Syracuse.

Syracuse-Pawtucket

Former Tampa Bay RHP Jeremi Gonzalez on the mound

French Strikes out swinging, 1 OUT

Nelson strikes out swining on a high fastball, 2 OUT

Mottola, batting clean up hits one deep to left, and it's gone, 2 run shot, his second straight game with a jack.

Griffin hits a single to continue the inning.

Hill grounds out to 3rd to end the inning, 3 OUT

Francisco Rosario to face Lombard-Berg-Youkilis.

The first batter lines one right at Gross. One out. Wow, Rosario is working very fast, he's already at 0-2 on Bergie. Swing and a miss, ball dropped, 2-3 putout on the strikeout. Two outs.

Really, I'm not kidding about Rosario's pace here. It's 1-1 to Youkilis, and I haven't stopped typing since Berg's AB. He's hitting 94-95 on the gun.

Full count pitch now to Youkilis is swung on and a nice backhand pick by Hill, then a strong throw to first for the third out. Still 2-0 Chiefs.

Crozier just connected on a homerun, more than 400 feet to CF here in Pawtucket.

Top of the 2nd, 2-0 Skychiefs.

Crozier falls behind 0-2, battles back to 2-2 count, hammers a ball deep but foul, still 2-2 count. good at bat by Crozier so far, 7 pitches already. Swung on and hit deep to centre, going going going and gone. deepest part of the yard, 400 feet, but he had plenty of room to spare.

Alfaro hits a comebacker to Gonzalez, 1 OUT.

Dominque, the 9th hitter steps in. good eye by Dominque, works a 3-2 count. rolls over to Short, 2 OUT.

French up, 0-1 with a strike out. hits the first pitch to centre field, and it's a can of corn for the centerfield, 3 OUT.

1 run, 1 hit, no walks, nobody left of base in the top half of the second, 3-0 Skychiefs after 1 1/2

Meanwhile, in Lansing, over what can only be described as a below-average connection:

It's just 8 degrees and 19-year-old Chi-Hung Cheng pitched a scoreless first inning, which isn't surprising. I'm not sure what happened with the West Michigan Whitecaps in the next inning. At any rate, Klosterman just ended the Lansing second.

Two complete, scoreless innings in the books.
RiosGrande - Wednesday, April 20 2005 @ 06:40 PM EDT (#112880) #
Bottom of the 2nd.

Shawn Wooten the batter. first pitch is a strike. Misses high to even the count at 1-1. swing and a miss, 1-2. 1-2 pitch is fouled back. swung on, and popped up to 3rd, and Alfaro makes the catch. 1 OUT.

Kenny Shoppach hitting. First pitch is fouled back. swung on, hit high in the air on the left side, alfaro going back but runs out of room, foul ball. Next pitch in the dirt for ball one. another ball, 2-2. swing and a miss, k number 2 for Rosario. 2 OUT.

Sherrod up next. first pitch up high for ball 1. Rosario gets behind 2-0. 2-0 pitch fouled down the line. Rosario in low to mid 90's consistantly. Rosario comes back with a 88 MPH fastball and he misses it. Bryan Nelson makes a great catch on a foul ball down the 1st baseline, waving off Crozier. 3 OUT.

no runs, no hits, no walk, 1k, in the bottom of the 2nd. Still 3-0 Skychiefs after 2.

In the top of the third, Justin Justice (an early favourite for Name Of The Night) grounds out to shortstop. Then a strikeout for Cheng against Colvin, the former's third K on the night. And hey! what do you know, a groundout. Inning over.

With New Hampshire finished their game and Syracuse and Lansing covered, Dunedin is the odd team out. Checking the scoreboard...there is nothing to report on. Bumstead vs MacDonald is the scheduled matchup for whenever they get started.

In Lansing, both the first base and third base coaches have pullovers on over their jerseys. It's really cold.

Yuber is up now with Peralta on first after a misplay by the shortstop. The Whitecaps' pitcher (6-foot-7 Andrew Kown) keeps throwing over to first. A grounder, could it be a double play? No, as Yuber beats out the throw for a fielder's choice.

Two outs for Curtis Thigpen, batting second tonight. After a 3-0 count and an automatic strike, he grounds one to shortstop.

Through three, no score.
RiosGrande - Wednesday, April 20 2005 @ 06:49 PM EDT (#112885) #
Nelson lead off for the Cuse. Falls behind early 0-2. Tim Hummel makes a great play up the middle, and retires Nelson. 1 OUT

Gross up, doubled in the 1st. 1-1 count. Gross bangs one up the middle for a base hit. went down and got a low breaking ball, he's 2 for 2 so far tonight.

Brings up Mottola, who homered to left already. Gonzalez keeping a eye on Gross who's swiped a couple bases this year. 2-0 count. swung on and fouled, 2-1 count. good time for a hit and run. 2-1 pitch is fouled down the line, now 2-2 count. fouled back again. grounder to 2nd softly, try to turn the double play, but only get Gross at 2nd. 2 OUT.

JFG the batter, he singled in his 1st at bat. 1-1 count. two outs, runner on 1st. ball in the dirt, good block by the catcher, 2-1. High for a ball, the catcher almost catches Mottola in no man's land. 3-1 pitch is missed by Griffin and Mottola is running on the play. Looks like it was a hit and run, but Mottola is done like dinner at 2nd. 3 OUT.

no runs, 1 hit, no walks, nobody left on base. Through 2 and 1/2 it's 3-0 Skychiefs.

Cheng was almost out of a jam there, with two on and two out, as the batter just checked his swing on an 0-2 pitch. Now Cheng has gone to a full count, and a Jody Roughton single through the right side scores the first run of the game for West Michigan.

The next pitch is bounced out to short, inning over. Three hits in the inning, 1-0 going to the home half of the 4th in Lansing.

DH Lockwood up. 2-1 count. just missed for ball 3, 3-1. and he walks, first runner allowed by Rosario.

Tim Hummel is up, Rosario pummels him with fastballs. 1-2 count. swing and a miss, strike 3, 3rd K of the game for Francisco!!. 1 OUT.

something Machado is up, don't want to try to spell his first name. 1-1 count. Rosario checks on Lockwood at 1st. 1-1 pitch is outside for a ball, 2-1. Swung on, groundball to 1st, Crozier scoops it up and touches 1st for the out, Lockwood advances to 2nd. 2 OUT.

back to the top of the order. 2-1 the count. and the pitch, grounded to Crozier, and he makes the unnassisted play, 3 OUT.

no runs, no hits, 1 walk, 1 k, 1 man left on base. 3-0 Skychiefs after 3.
RiosGrande - Wednesday, April 20 2005 @ 07:05 PM EDT (#112889) #
JFG up again after Mottola was caught stealing. Belted deep down the right field line, but just foul, just missed his 5th of the year. Next pitch is missed, strike 3. 1 OUT.

Brings up Aaron Hill, batting in the 6th slot. 1-2 the count. Ball low, 2-2 now. Chopped down 3rd, but Youkalis makes a good play and gets Hill by half a step. 2 OUT.

Crozier, who homered last at bat, fall behind 1-2. Gonzalez doing a good job of getting ahead of batters. Crozier smashes one down the 1st base line for a stand up double. Gonzalez went to the kitchen one to many times, and Crozier burned him.

Alfaro the batter, 2-0. just as I said Gonzalez does a good job of getting ahead of hitters, he falls behind Alfaro 3-0. Gonzalez fights back, 3-2 count. and Alfaro misses it, strike 3, 3 OUT.

no runs, 1 hit, no walks, 1 man left on base, 3-0 Chiefs after 3 and 1/2.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, Eric Nielsen breaks an 0-for-14 slump with a double. He's reached twice tonight with this and a walk in the second.

Snavely is quickly down 0-2, then swings and misses on a heater. Five K's for West Michigan's Andrew Kown through four, and 1-0 is still the score.

**

In the top of the fifth the temperature has warmed up to 10, or 50 for our American friends. Cheng starts Justin Justice off with a strike, then a ball, then a curveball. And...called strike three! However, Cheng walks the next batter on four pitches. That's three walks for the young lefty.

A high chopper to Klosterman at short, who barehands it and fires to first for the second out. Nice play. And it's followed up with a pop fly to Klosterman. Inning over.

Note: Dick Scott is in Lansing along with Merv Rettenmund, the roving hitting instructor.
Rob - Wednesday, April 20 2005 @ 07:18 PM EDT (#112891) #
Ryan Klosterman ties it up in the fifth with a homerun! His third of the year. Joey Wolfe comes up and whacks one off the wall for a double. Two pitches, six total bases. The pitching coach goes out to talk to Kown, who was cruising through four.

Peralta lays down a bunt, and he's thrown out on a close play at first. Wolfe to third, Yuber to the plate.

Kown throws two straight balls in the dirt as Daniel Konecny warms up in the visitor's bullpen. The 2-2 pitch is fouled back, as is the next 2-2 pitch. Swing and a miss, strike three.

Thigpen hits one back, back...caught at the track by Justin Justice.

However, the game is tied at 1 after five.

2, 3, 4 hitters coming to the plate.

Youkalis to the plate, grounded out to short last time. Rosario falls behind 2-0. next pitch paints the corner for strike 1. next pitch is hit to right center, in for a hit, stand up double for Youkalis. First hit given up for Rosario. Looks like the wind took that one for a double.

Shopparch to the plate. 1-0. next pitch taken for a stike, 1-1. Rosario throwing with ease, very good to see. 2-2 count as Shopparch fouls one away. I have a feeling this will be Cheng's last inning, as Jordy Templet is getting loose. The first batter grounds one to Klosterman, who makes another nice play! Looks like we have one of our Three Stars.

Parrish swings at an 0-2 pitch, but he missed it. Funny sidebar: apparently, when Thigpen went "around the horn" after the K, he nearly threw the ball right at Parrish.

To the next batter: swinging strike, foul, swinging strike. Five and a half complete, score tied at 1.

Line (so far) for Cheng: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 3 BB, 7 K.

French the batter, shows bunt but takes it for a ball. next pitch is a strike, French doesn't like it, and argues with the ump. next pitch is fouled, 1-2. French misses the next pitch, 2 OUT.

Patton-Cannon-Nielsen due up here in the bottom of the sixth. Nielsen clearly missed the memo regarding the "on" string in his last name.

Cannon makes the second out with a 1-5-3 putout. Yeah, it sounds weird to me, too. The trainers are out to check out new pitcher Daniel Konecny after taking that ball off his body.

Nielsen with a double down the left-field line. He has two hits and a walk tonight -- the broadcaster says, "There we go, E-Money!"

I missed how Nielsen got to third, but he just scored on a passed ball. Snavely up to second, so he must have singled. Klosterman takes a walk and there are two on for Joey Wolfe who has a double tonight. However, a groundout ends the inning.

2-1 Lansing after six.

first pitch is hit deep to center, but French runs it down, 1 OUT.

brings up the 8th hitter Hummel. first pitch is inside for a ball. next pitch is a shallow fly out to Mottola, 2 OUT.

only 3 pitches so far for Rosario this inning. 2-1 the count, next pitch misses for a ball, 3-1. Machado takes a strike, full count. and he walks him, 3rd walk by Rosario.

back to the top of the order. Machado had 30 stolen bases last year, so Rosario is keeping an eye on him. Running going, and the the throw is not in time, stolen bag for Machado. two out, runner on 2nd. 3-2 count, 96mph fastball, Rosario is really rowring back with it. and the pitch, called strike 3, 5th k for Rosario!!!

no runs, no hits, 1 walk, 1k, through 5 it's still 3-0, time to score some more runs boys!!
