Two fine young pitchers in this one, Dave Bush (0-1) for Toronto takes on Joe Blanton (0-0) of the A's.

As the Jays take the field tonight, they possess the best record in the majors. Don't change the luck...

Does anybody know if Mike Wilner's second child has been born yet? My wife asks me daily for updates on this (I am not kidding) and I have no information for her.

Probably nobody cares, but....there was a brief mention of Tim Hudson as a tough-luck starter yesterday. Apparently, he, in fact, does lead the majors in "guy who had the bullpen blow the most leads for him since 2002."

Starting pitchers have left games after the sixth inning with leads and had their bullpens blow the leads (2002-present):
Tim Hudson 19
Kip Wells 16
Oliver Perez 15
Cory Lidle 14
Randy Wolf 14
Darrell May 14
Source: Elias Sports Bureau

The above came from the latest Peter Gammons column.

Just a reminder to review the Batter's Box Game Thread Guidelines before joining in this thread. Remember, it's as if we're all auditioning to be the next colour analyst on the Jays' broadcast team.....
Useless Tyler - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:13 PM EDT (#111334) #
Did one of us do wrong?

Besides, Warren Sawkwiw doesn't meet most of those guidelines.

Hinske grounded out? What's up with that?
King Ryan - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:17 PM EDT (#111336) #
I had a feeling we got a bit too "loose" in the past two threads.

It is my opinion that some slack should be given in game threads to games that are not widely available on television. It's hard to audition as a Jays colour guy when you're forced to watch the game on GameDay. :-)

P.S. Is Warren Sawkiw that bad? I've never heard him as an announcer before.

Useless Tyler - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:21 PM EDT (#111338) #
I like the Sawk, but others do not. His comments are rather basic and shallow, but I happen to enjoy his persona.

As for the threads, I think we need to fear threads being too "loose" less than we need to fear the box being turned into some police state.

But on topic - that's the Dave Bush I remember - good morning, good afternoon, good night to Durazo.
Nolan - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:21 PM EDT (#111339) #
After one inning, Bush looks very sharp. He is hitting corners for strikes and none of the A's, even Chavez who managed a hit, seemed comfortable. Today Bush seems a lot more confident than he did against Boston.

...Of course, it is just one inning do far...
Flex - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:24 PM EDT (#111340) #

Is my GameDay decieving me or did Scott Hatteberg just hit a pitch that almost above his head?
Nolan - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:31 PM EDT (#111343) #
That was a great double paly- Shea started with a quick, accurate throw and O'Dog made the turn very quickly. Orlando had the ball headed over to first before the ball even hit his glove...or so it seemed.
Petey Baseball - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:33 PM EDT (#111344) #

Magpie - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:34 PM EDT (#111345) #
Is Sawkiw that bad?

Well...

I have been listening to the radio a bit more lately. And Sawkiw's already told several times most of his stories about his own career and his relatives and everybody he's ever met. Gotten most of it out of his system. Which is a blessed relief.

I don't think he's contributing that much in a positive sense, but at least the stuff that was driving me crazy is beginning to wane...

Petey Baseball - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:35 PM EDT (#111346) #
Yes, Mike Wilner's daughter was born. I'm not exactly sure but a regular caller last night congratulated him on "Extendo JaysTalk" at 1 am last night.

I'm watching on MLB.TV and getting to listen to the A's announcers- Adams just struck out on an outside curveball that the announcers said nicely caught the corner of the plate. they then showed an overhead replay of the pitch which clearly showed the pitch missing by at least 4 inches. the announcers then repeated their assertion that it was over the plate. I just wish announcers would say "good pitch, but it was off the plate just a bit." Oh well.
Nolan - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:50 PM EDT (#111351) #
Here's the trivia question just posed by the A's announcers:

Mark J - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 10:56 PM EDT (#111355) #
I was thinking Dave Collins? I think Rickey was with the Yankees then.

Bush looks terrific. He's working very quickly and his pitches have a fair bit of movement. Swisher looks good in right, have seen some of all three games and he's made some fine running catches. Hinske made a nice athletic play on the Ellis groundout. Hillenbrand threw it offline, Hinske jumped, caught the ball, and tagged the runner out in one motion. The announcers seemed underwhelmed but it looked impressive to me.

That's what happens when you build an offence around Dave Kingman.

Another nice play by Hinske on the Adams throw.
Nolan - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:03 PM EDT (#111360) #
Yeah, the A's guys are quite calm about most of the plays so far, except of course when Nick Swisher makes a catch. Adams made announcer excellent plat at short to sit Kendall down, but equally impressive was Hinske's rab on Adam's low thrown. God play all around.

And on a side note, the announcer's were discussing the '92 World Series and discussing the last out in the series: the story was about mike Timlin (which is why the last out of the series came up), but they could not remember the Brave who made the last out. The funny thing is that they spent a considerable amount of time and energy trying to figure out who the player was (and couldn't figure it out[Otis Nixon]) and never got back to answering it. Surely they have someone there who could quickly look it up so that they could mention the correct answer later on.

I am watching gameday and it shows that Bush is throwing a lot of strikes right in the middle of the plate - these curveballs or what?

Not really. He has dropped some curves over the plate, but for the most part he's working both corners of the plate, especially with his fastball.

Chuck - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:15 PM EDT (#111371) #
Looks like we got ourselves a good old fashioned pitches duel.

You don't know how right you are! (Or maybe you do.) Two guys with high socks are pitching very well. One guy with high socks just hit a homerun. All we're missing is some tabacky juice and an eefus pitch.

robertdudek - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:15 PM EDT (#111372) #
Holy mackinaw. Sparky absolutely crushes one to centre and the tone of the A's TV commentary would be approapriate if he popped up to shallow right field.

I positively hate morose announcers. The only thing worse than that is Harrelson (who does the White Sox games): he goes overboard when the Sox do something good and has a completely flat-toned delivery when something good happens for the Sox opponents.

Did anyone else notice how absolutely dejected the announcer sounded at Reed's homer? I got all excited but he made it sound like it was nothing - quite a turn-off. The crowd was so quiet you could easily hear the "CLANG" the ball made.

Sad thing is, that's putting it lightly. The fact that Hawk still has a job is ridiculous. The guy even cheerleads. Says things like "Come on, Joe, hit it out here! Put us on the board!" I swear, he says "us."

Obviously the next step for MLB Gameday is to specify the type of pitch thrown.

Swisher has three dongs already? Wow.

Gitz - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:24 PM EDT (#111382) #
Two of the home runs came against the Orioles, against Rick Bauer and some other yutz from the O's Pen. Swisher has only one walk this year, and that was the skill I thought he would bring -- getting on base. I figured he'd hit about 18 home runs, but I also thought he'd get on base near a .360 clip, even with a low BA.
Gitz - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:25 PM EDT (#111383) #

Is it me or are the A's the most boring team in the universe? And I'm a FAN.

Pretty dull, yeah, but you have to go a long way before you overcome the dullness of the Rockies, who've been nine plain unsalted crackers ever since Juan Pierre left. They could make Coors Field boring, those guys.

Gitz - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:26 PM EDT (#111385) #

Huston Street is getting ready in the bullpen? That surprises me. He worked two innings last night and there are other options.

And Walker up for the Jays. Macha is still lining up his lefty hitters in a nice Handy-for-the-Other-Team's-LOOGY row.

With first base open, Bush will avoid challenging any of them, at least until one actually reaches. They'll have to hit his pitch.

My guess is the A's don't trust Cruz yet. But you're right, Magpie. I'm not sure I'd use Street in this situation, either. Where's Kiko?

God, I hate Durazo. I don't care about the .919 OPS or whatever. I've never seen a hitter take bigger swings and hit the ball so frigging un-far. The ends may justify the means, but he's an irritatingly streaky hitter who vanishes for months at a time. It looks like he's taking April off. Thanks, Ruby.

King Ryan - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:36 PM EDT (#111397) #
Gitz, we have a similar player in Vernon Wells. :)

In order for this game to maintain it's parallelness, Zaun is going to have to double in a run here, just as the A's catcher did in the previous inning.

Street worked in the first game of the series (two days ago).

Grumble grumble. Someday you'll get old too. All of you!

For those of us with no visual aids - Hillenbrand's 2B - radio seemed a little unclear as to where to centre he hit it. Did it look like extra bases out of the box, did Kotsay have a bit of a run to get there? Hillenbrand's not exactly a burner and Jerry sounded a little surprised when he just kept running to second.

Craig B - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:40 PM EDT (#111401) #
I didn't mention it earlier, but I really like tonight's lineup. I like the fact that Gibby realizes that he's got 6 guys for 5 spots in the lineup, and because of the versatility of guys like Reed and Shea, he can afford to spell a guy here and there.

Speaking of good managing, putting on the hit-and-run with Adams up and Rios on was a nice move.
Craig B - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:42 PM EDT (#111402) #
Putting it on twice in an at-bat isn't quite as nice, but I still think it's a good idea. :)

OK, the throw beat Rios, but he was very safe on that hit-and-run attempt. Ellis did not get the tag on Rios until after the foot hit the bag.

Good risk by Rios trying to get in to scoring position with 1 out. It didn't work this time, but it was a risk worth taking at this point of the game.

I'm following this on the web, so does anyone listening on raido or TV know who (if anyone) is warming up in the pen? In my mind you're just past Schoeneweis territory, so I'm guessing Frasor is probably going to be the first option out of the pen.

OK, the throw beat Rios, but he was very safe on that hit-and-run attempt. Ellis did not get the tag on Rios until after the foot hit the bag.

I agree, Nolan. But the unspoken rule for SB attempts is if the throw beats you, you're out. And it was a heck of a throw, if just a couple inches too far to the left.

Adams' called strike 3 wasn't really a strike either. The inning could have played out a little differently.

robertdudek - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:48 PM EDT (#111409) #
Hillenbrand's double was hit on a low trajectory and split the outfielders perfectly. Though Kotsay did just cut it off, he was off-balance and had to pivot to throw to second. Hillenbrand must have been hustling out the box. It was the type of hit that a fast runner makes an easy double on.
Tyler - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:48 PM EDT (#111410) #

Chuck - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:49 PM EDT (#111411) #
Ouch. After Thomas swung at a 3-1 fastball up at his eyes, Bush came back with a 3-2 curve that missed by a lot.
Nolan - Wednesday, April 13 2005 @ 11:50 PM EDT (#111412) #
Great pitch by Bush to strike out Ginter on the inside of the plate. However the announcers were convinced that it was a ball even after the replays showed it clearly crossing the plate. Even after seeing the replay, it was simply that "Zaun did a good job bringing it into the strike zone." Ah, admit it when you make a mistake. i don't mind a little bit of homerism, but not at the expense of reliability.

Warren "had a feeling" Hudson was going to get a hit there. You gotta tell us before it happens in order to impress anyone.

Normally I regard extra innings as free baseball (except when Liam was little and I was paying a babysitter by the hour.) But I don't feel like extra innings tonight (I have to get up at 700 AM), and I'm pretty sure the ball club doesn't either (they have to fly to Texas. Of course they're much younger and much more vigourous and much more well compensated than I am.)

Anyway, let's get a run in and go pound some Budweiser or something. Whatever Joe Schulz used to say.

Vernon is definately pull conscious right now. Once he missed badly at the 3-1 slider it was a certainty that another was coming and Calero threw a perfect one. The only way Wells hits that is if he shoots it to right.

King Ryan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:22 AM EDT (#111431) #
What happened? GameDay has been stuck on "In play, run scoring play" for about an hour now. Well, ir feels like an hour.
R Billie - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:24 AM EDT (#111432) #
Why would you leave Scho in to face the right handed batter? This guy is useless against righties as proven over his whole career. Now the game is out of reach.

NOW the change is made anyway long after it's too late.
dmac - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:24 AM EDT (#111433) #
They are definitely over using Schoeneweis .. it was probably a mistake to bring him in. Much like Game 3 in Tampa Bay.
Chuck - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:24 AM EDT (#111434) #
Awww, crap. TV viewers, how bad was the SS throw there?

It wasn't 100% perfect but definitely should have been caught. Zaun was sleeping.

Joe - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:26 AM EDT (#111435) #
It wasn't that bad a throw. Catchable, anyways, as Zaun got his glove on it. The Oakland announcers pointed out how Schoeneweis thought about going to second, but spun and went to home (as he is apparently supposed to), which combined with the bad throw to surprise Zaun and cause the error.

I imagine I am being a bit homerish myself, but I can't recall Jays announcers being as homerish as the Oakland duo. I can at least count on the Jays announcers to get a bit excited when the opposing team does something interesting
H Winfield Teut - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:28 AM EDT (#111436) #
SS throw was wide but Zaun should have had it easily, SS paused as if going to second then went home....as for giving John Ford back for Durazo, dont look now but he had 2 of the 3 Syracuse hits including his third home...Banks pitched 7 of shutout ball for New Haven, Gaudin gave up one run in 6 for scuse, Arnold took the loss 2 innings 4 k, but gave up the game winning homer.
H Winfield Teut - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:30 AM EDT (#111437) #
A's announcers homerish??? Just cause in the first game during the blow out they spent 2 innings talking about why the radio guy has a podium. Nah...Kuiper and Fosse are good guys, they just aren't too excitable.
bmy1 - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:31 AM EDT (#111438) #
Schoenweiss blows. He hasn't done anything positive this year. We need a new lefty out of the pen. How many chances is this guy going to get?
R Billie - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:31 AM EDT (#111439) #
If Scho was going to go to second he should have went to second. It was Durazo running. He could have went to third and Shea still would have had plenty of time to throw out Durazo running to first. Had he gotten at least one out somewhere they would have been out of the inning with only 1 run against.
R Billie - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:33 AM EDT (#111440) #
We need a manager who isn't going to try to use him every single game. I know you don't feel good about leaving your righty relievers in against lefty batters late in the game but you can't use your lone lefty every game. Scho has thrown in 7 of the 9 games which is patently ridiculous use and abuse.
bmy1 - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:35 AM EDT (#111442) #
Scho has had 3 bad outings out of 7. That's pretty horrendous
H Winfield Teut - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:36 AM EDT (#111443) #
lets not crack out the can the manager after a bad game
King Ryan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:36 AM EDT (#111444) #
The game isn't over, gentlemen. If Rios draws a walk here, and Adams hits his first Grand Salami, and the Jays are back in business.
Rob - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:37 AM EDT (#111445) #
Scho has had 3 bad outings out of 7.

Would that make his other four outings...good? Dare I say...positive?

King Ryan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:39 AM EDT (#111446) #
Okay, okay. Change of plans. Rios RBI groundout, then ADAMS walks, and SPARKY hits the grand slam.
Magpie - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:39 AM EDT (#111447) #
Jerry just said "good job by Rios to get the run home from third with less than two outs."

I miss Tom.

Did anybody notice the nice job done for the Rangers by Chan Ho Park tonight? Did anybody else do a spit take?

King Ryan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:39 AM EDT (#111448) #
That would, of course, be the first ever MLB grand slam hit without the bases loaded.
H Winfield Teut - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:40 AM EDT (#111449) #
hard to hit a slam with only 2 runners on
dmac - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:42 AM EDT (#111450) #
Well with that attitude it is!
Anonymous - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:42 AM EDT (#111451) #
Yeah, yeah, A's win, but considering it was 6-2 with only 3 outs to go, Jays made a run of it. And, take away Zaun's snooze at the plate, we have a totally different ball game. Still a lot of positives hidden in the loss.
King Ryan - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:42 AM EDT (#111452) #
Okay, I changed my mind again. Sparky will strikeout, and then...oh. Damn.

Well, can't win 'em all. Nice to see another strong outing from Bush. Hopefully the next game I can watch fully on TV. For the first time this year! :(
R Billie - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:43 AM EDT (#111453) #
Unfortunately Koskie's injury means the Jays had no-one to pinch hit against Dotel who could not get any of the lefthanded batters out. Hillenbrand, Rios, Johnson, strikeout, groundball, strikeout.

And the disastrous 8th cost the Jays who would have tied the game in the 9th if they turn that doubleplay.

Nonetheless, the Jays have still won each of the three series they've played.
Useless Tyler - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:44 AM EDT (#111454) #
6-3 is nothing to be ashamed of (the record, not score). That was a solid performance that they lost on unearned runs, like the home opener. Just a few silly mistakes.

And they still won the series, and as the press mentions any time the Jays win a series, that's the important part.
Thomas - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:48 AM EDT (#111455) #
It's been great to see the team give some fight, even when down really late.

The frustrating part of this season is that the team could really easily be 9-0. The bullpen imploded in game 3 in Tampa. In the home opener if Hudson's grounder went a foot (or whatever the precise distance is) to the right it would have been a single that drives in two and wins the game and today was obviously a very winnable game.

I guess the positive to draw from this is that we haven't been out of a game all season and that even in the losses the Jays are playing quite well. Still, it'd be nice to be sitting at 7-2, 8-1 or even 9-0.

Looking forward, on the bright side we have Lilly and Doc for the first two games in Texas.
R Billie - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:50 AM EDT (#111456) #
Well I don't want to be unrealistic and demand a win everytime out but the silly errors and pen meltdowns with the game on the line and weird managerial decisions (like allowing your LOOGY to face a righty with two outs and the bases loaded) in a close game shows this team isn't going to look so pretty when the hitting isn't around as it wasn't tonight.
Magpie - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:52 AM EDT (#111457) #
Still a lot of positives hidden in the loss. You betcha. And you forgot that Schoeneweid lowered his ERA tonight.

The team is playing well, but the bullpen... not so much. They've accounted for the majority of opposition runs in the three losses, in a fraction of the innings.

Sawkiw is ripping Gibbons for leaving Schoeneweis in to pitch to Ginter, who has a big platoon split.

Well, it's early. Mark Mulder's ERA is 8.18. And my pick for NL Cy Young is 0-2, with an ERA of 11.00 with 8 BB in 9 IP.

Gitz - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:53 AM EDT (#111458) #
Haha, Robert. Durazo is a fine hitter, obviously, he's just irritating to follow. You know how there are some players who never seem to do anything but wind up with good numbers? That's Durazo. He's a poor man's Bobby Abreu. I wish Ruby would spread out his production, that's all.
Rob - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:56 AM EDT (#111460) #
Well, that makes two ninth-inning rallies that have fallen short. Interestingly, both games were started by Bush.

I still don't know why Schoeneweis was left to pitch to Ginter, or why Kotsay was walked to pitch to Kendall. Oh well.

Before I go to bed, a light-hearted demand for Mike Wilner:
No more YES clips on the Out Of Town Scoreboard.
Thank you.
R Billie - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 12:57 AM EDT (#111461) #
The pen has not been pretty at all. The most frustrating thing is watching them come in and not be able to throw strikes. Frasor, Schoeneweiss, and Speier all had spotty control. I don't understand how Bush could go 7 innings and walk 1 guy and these guys can't make it through 2 outs without walking someone.
Ryan C - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 01:19 AM EDT (#111462) #
Go Wilner! Lol. Totally shutting down a caller who wants the Jays to bunt every time they have a runner on first.
CaramonLS - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 01:33 AM EDT (#111463) #
Perhaps Towers should be moved to the pen, I promise you wont see any walks!
R Billie - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 01:36 AM EDT (#111464) #
I think Mike overstated things there. .400 obp hitters are few and far between and Hudson is very much average in that respect. But his point was still valid.

In that particular situation I would have attempted a hit-and-run with Hudson. He had already grounded out twice so the chances were good to get at least a runner to second with 1 out.

Unfortunately the hit-and-run with Adams/Rios didn't work as Street crossed them up by throwing a tough slider down and in on a 2-1 count and then Kendall made a perfect throw.
gopher - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 02:15 AM EDT (#111465) #
yes, we all feel for Tom but we are truly fortunate to have a gifted broadcaster in Jerry. Let's not minimize that. I'm excited about this team ! Fun to watch and to listen to and I really enjoy all of your comments, well most of them.
uglyone - Thursday, April 14 2005 @ 02:27 PM EDT (#111512) #
Surprised to hear all the criticism towards Schoeneweis, when he actually pitched well. The walk was annoying, btu he came on with men on base, and got the dribblers he needed to get out of that inning cleanly. Zaun's fault for dropping the ball...and Gibbons' fault for letting him face the righty after that. The lefties couldn't touch him.

Frasor is the one that should be getting the criticism here - that was his bad inning.
