The long winter is finally over. It's Opening Day 2005, and the Toronto Blue Jays are back. Roy Halladay opposes the Devil Rays and Dewon Brazelton in Tampa in an unusual 4:15 pm Opening Day start. Few openers will be watched as closely by Blue Jay fandom as this one.

Simply put, the Jays need to start well this year. Halladay has been rocked in his past two Opening Day assignments, last year by the then-lowly Detroit Tigers. Those losses have set the stage for miserable Aprils, which the Jays have now experienced three seasons running. It needs to end today, and the Jays could scarcely have asked for a better opponent, a Rays team whose second baseman and rightfielder retired in the spring and whose replacement centerfielder was just suspended under MLB's new drug-testing policy.

Speaking of policies ... Batter's Box has a brand new set of Game Thread Guidelines in place for 2005. Before posting to this thread, please read through the Guidelines, then c'mon back and enjoy the game!

Kudos to Sportsnet for their high production values. Really enjoyed the highlight package and the classy tribute to people that recently passed away.

Looks like a family and friends gathering at the Trop. I guess opening day doesn't mean anything for those folks unlike all the other MLB cities.

Looking foward to Da Box's own Jamie Campbell at the mic.

Man, I'm so excited...its like Christmas in spring!

I'll repeat what I asked in the thread-I-thought-was-the-game-thread.

Does anyone know the attendance? (Or a website where it is listed). The stadium looks half empty. Actually more than half empty, from the camera shots I've seen. That would be really sad for an opening day. I do hope we do better.
Andrew K - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:23 PM EDT (#108962) #
Apparently the Devil Rays have won on opening day for the past 5 years. Halladay is the man to break the streak.
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:23 PM EDT (#108963) #
Generally, we won't mention developments unrelated to the game at hand, but there's a sufficient Blue Jays connection for this. The Tigers' Dmitri Young cracked three home runs today to tie the record (first set by George Bell) for most HRs on Opening Day! Even better, it was against the Royals, who suffered George's troika back in 1987. Way cool.

Hey, trivia buffs: who's the third player to share the record held by Bell and now Young?
CaramonLS - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:24 PM EDT (#108965) #
Kind of a strange lineup:

Cat
Hudson
Wells
Koskie
Hillenbrand
Hinske
Zaun
Gross
Adams
Elijah - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:25 PM EDT (#108968) #
That would be Yomiuri Giants outfielder Karl "Tuffy" Rhodes. Who's no longer a gaijin anymore.
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:26 PM EDT (#108969) #
Even with Robbie Alomar retired, look for a bunch of ex-Jays in this series. Alex Gonzalez is at third base (?) for Tampa, while Josh Phelps will surely suit up against Gus Chacin tomorrow and Mark Hendrickson is (I think) scheduled to pitch Game 3.

There's word that the Rays may sign the recently released Charles Johnson (if they haven't already), which may send Kevin Cash to the minors. That trade looks odder all the time from Tampa's perspective.
smarch - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:28 PM EDT (#108970) #
I thought I read that Cash was put on the 15 day DL
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:28 PM EDT (#108971) #
Well done, Elijah!

Even though the first two batters were retired, there are good signs: Cat worked Brazelton to a full count before flying out, while Hudson smoked a pitch that required a fine running catch. Looks promising.
CaramonLS - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:28 PM EDT (#108972) #
Jordan, According to Advanced Scout, Phelps is their Everyday DH (4th vs. Left, 6th vs. Right).

Hes actually batting 5th today.
Elijah - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:28 PM EDT (#108973) #
Jordan, I'm looking at the Rays' 25-man roster and with Cash being placed on the DL last week, they don't appear to have a second catcher behind Toby Hall (unless I'm missing something). I wonder if Phelps is the backup until they sign Johnson or otherwise.
Ron - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:29 PM EDT (#108974) #
Looks like Wells still has trouble laying off the high fastball on the first pitch.

Is it just me or did Sportsnet change the camera angle? It appears it's titled more to the right of the pitcher.
Nolan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:30 PM EDT (#108975) #
Anyone watching this game on something other than MLB.tv (which is how I'm catching it)? I'm curious as to how hard Brazelton's pitches are coming in as I always understood that he was a mid-90's type pitcher.
CaramonLS - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:30 PM EDT (#108976) #
I know its only the 1st Batter of the season, but wow I hope we see more 3 pitch strikeouts from Roy.
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:31 PM EDT (#108977) #
Thanks for the updates, guys -- I was late to the keyboard today and didn't pick up that info.

Phelps against Halladay should be amusing. But I'll bet Josh takes Gus Chacin very deep when they meet.
Petey Baseball - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:31 PM EDT (#108978) #
Wow, a small crowd at the Trop. I've noticed in the past however that even though most Ray games are less than half full, the people that are there, make quite a bit of noise. Anybody agree?
BCMike - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:32 PM EDT (#108979) #

Kind of a strange lineup:

I thought that was pretty much the lineup we've been expecting for a while now (Gross in for Rios is the exception).

Elijah - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:32 PM EDT (#108980) #
I'm waiting for Hinske to come up to see if that heckler is still there. =)
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:33 PM EDT (#108981) #
Yeah, you never want to read too much into one batter, but Doc sure looked sharp on the first batter. And sharp play by Koskie to get the grounder! There were some concerns that he'd be rusty in the field, but he was very aggressive to that groundball and got the out.
Nolan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:33 PM EDT (#108982) #
Wow, nice play by Koskie to get Lugo on the chopper.
CaramonLS - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:33 PM EDT (#108983) #
I agree, definately a loud croud.

Jordan, The D'Rays have indeed signed Charles Johnson.

I would think he'll join the team tomorrow.

Ron:

You took the words right out of my mouth. This camera angle is definitley different than last year. I loved TSN's old closer-up view when they used to have most of the games.
But this new one, I like! I like!
CaramonLS - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:35 PM EDT (#108987) #
Nolan do you think Koskie should have gotten that ball?

It seemed like Adams looked a little shocked when it got snagged by Koskie.
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:35 PM EDT (#108988) #
Expect to see a lot of that this year -- Russ Adams throwing low on a grounder to first base, Eric Hinske scooping it and picking up his shortstop. I mentioned this is a springtime game report, but if Hinske can snag those errant throws from Adams, the rookie's confidence will grow and he'll relax a lot sooner. Very promising inning.
BCMike - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:37 PM EDT (#108990) #
Sawkiw just mentioned that Hillenbrand is known for getting on base and has a high on base percentage.
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:38 PM EDT (#108991) #
I'm almost always happy to see a third baseman take charge of a grounder and cut off the shortstop -- he's got the momentum on the throw and he'll usually have the better angle. I've always felt the third baseman basically owns the entire left side of the infield inside the baseline, while the shortstop owns the deep infield outside it.
Tyler - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:38 PM EDT (#108992) #
As far as the comments about the Rays attendance go, they aren't exactly opening up against a name opponent. I'd be surprised if the Jays sell out next week, and they've got a much more attractive draw. If they were opening with a set against the Sanchez-less D-Rays? Yikes.
Petey Baseball - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:38 PM EDT (#108993) #
Wow..would you look at that!

Hinske's stance is very different. His hands look more in an upright position. Looks like he's dropped some more weight as well.
Nolan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:39 PM EDT (#108994) #
"Nolan do you think Koskie should have gotten that ball?

It seemed like Adams looked a little shocked when it got snagged by Koskie"

Oh yeah. If Koskie had let Adams make the play, there would have been no way that they would have got that out- and that's not a slam on Adams. The third baseman has a good angle on a play like that and his momentum is already heading towards first.
Elijah - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:39 PM EDT (#108995) #
I'm listening to the Tampa Bay radio broadcast and I failed to hear the heckler. We need him to get Hinske going!

This looks like it's going to be a pitchers' duel.
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:40 PM EDT (#108996) #
Travis Lee doesn't have much of a bat, but as he just showed there, he's one of the better defensive first basemen in the league.

Shea Hillenbrand has a high OBP only to the extent he has a high batting average. If he's not getting hits, he's just not getting on base -- that's what makes him a risky proposition.
Pistol - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:40 PM EDT (#108997) #
"As far as the comments about the Rays attendance go, they aren't exactly opening up against a name opponent."

It's opening day! It should matter who the opponent is. Tampa is just a bad baseball town.

Was it just me, or was it awfully quiet when Hinske was up at that plate?

So far I've seen a few things that make me happy in this game. Most importantly, Hinske looked good at first, and Koskie at third.

I hope we are seeing (or listening...radio) to the Roy Halladay we are going to have all season. This is very favourable. Minimum pitches, lots of strikes, reminds me of September 2003.
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:42 PM EDT (#109001) #
I'm listening to the Tampa Bay radio broadcast and I failed to hear the heckler.

I live in hope that he's had his season tickets revoked.

Okay, I think we can safely say that Doc's back. That K of Phelps was a thing of beauty. His cut fastball is just humming.

smarch - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:43 PM EDT (#109002) #
Very Devo-like catch for Vernon there. Halladay looks great
Nolan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:44 PM EDT (#109003) #
Somebody mentioned earlir this spring that while they thought that Doc would be an effective pitcher, he would never be "dominating" again. Seeing his first two innings today has convinced my that he has the stuff to definitely regain his Cy-form.
CaramonLS - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:44 PM EDT (#109004) #
Joel if you are only listening on the Radio, its not doing him justice.

Not to sound homerish, but hes in a groove and is looking absolutely dominating out there.

I know Phelps is wondering why he woke up today.
Joel - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:47 PM EDT (#109005) #
Just to be a bit of a "homer" myself, I'm a little surprised that anyone would say Halladay could return to being no better than "effective."

His 2002 and 2003 seasons were both really good. He was hurt last year. Overall, he has shown potential and performance equal to the very best in the AL, not just journey man stuff.

Regardless, I'll be really pleased to see him at the dome live at first opportunity.
smarch - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:48 PM EDT (#109006) #

Looks like the heckler found a new target in Adams .... unless he arrived late and missed his chance to heckle Hinske.

LOL for Campbell calling him an annoying fan.
Elijah - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:49 PM EDT (#109009) #
I guess Russ Adams is the heckers' choice du jour. Well, this has got to be among the fastest first 2.5 innings I've seen in a long time. When did the game start, 4:25 or so?
Joe - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:49 PM EDT (#109010) #
Doc sounds like he's very sharp today. Like I've mentioned early, I think the Jays' success rests on his right shoulder, and if he really is back all the way, this season should be a lot of fun.

I am sorry to mention this, but I really would like to get to a TV before the game ends, so: both pitchers have a perfect game going through 2.

Tom is on the Fan 590 right now. Understandably, he sounds tired. We love you, Tom. Feel better.

I think it's sad that the heckler is picking on one of our rookies. Couldnt he have stuck with Eric?
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:49 PM EDT (#109012) #
You don't want to draw conclusions from so little data, but the first three innings do seem to foreshadow the kind of season we expected: great pitching, fine defence, very little offence (9 up, 9 down). Hopefully the Jays can begin to solve Brazelton the next time through the lineup.
Gitz - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:49 PM EDT (#109013) #
I'm late to the scene as well (been watching the A's/Orioles), but I'm pleased to hear that Halladay looks sharp.

Donkit R.K. - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:51 PM EDT (#109016) #
Adams just showed some real nice range to his left on that Singleton grounder, but he probably wouldn't have beaten Singleton to first even with a solid throw.
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:52 PM EDT (#109017) #
Russ has terrific range, as he just showed there, but he might want to consider eating some of those deep grounders. I'm not sure he could realistically have gotten the runner, and that's how two-base errors happen. Still, I can't blame his efforts.
Gitz - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:53 PM EDT (#109018) #
Good grief, the Devil Rays should be held up as the model for American Capitalism: "If (insert useless stiff of your choice here) Can Get A Job, So Can You!" I know they're an easy target, but really. Some of the personnel decisions are just crazy. The Restovich move was a good one; it would be better if they gave him a job over Chris Singlteon.
Tyler - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:53 PM EDT (#109019) #
It's opening day! It should matter who the opponent is. Tampa is just a bad baseball town.

I'd say that they're a bad baseball team in a town of unknown baseball properties. Let's see how they react to a good team before we write off the city. As I said above, I'd be willing to bet that the Jays would be at about 30-35K if their home opener wasn't against the BoSox.

Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:54 PM EDT (#109020) #
The Jays can learn from the Rays here -- that perfectly executed run-and-hit put runners at the corners. Infield single and hit-and-run is how you produce offence without power, and that's going to be Toronto's position this year.
Elijah - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:54 PM EDT (#109021) #
Gitz - they just DFA'd Restovich to accommodate Johnson on the roster. He'll go somewhere... one would think?
CaramonLS - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:55 PM EDT (#109022) #
2 GiDPs for Crawford last year? Amazing stat.
Gitz - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:56 PM EDT (#109023) #
Nasty. Gonzalez would have swung at anything once he was down 0-2. Halladay could have thrown that curve ball on the the third pitch, conserving a few pitches!
Joel - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:57 PM EDT (#109024) #
That error is really unfortunate. Jays get that close to coming out of the inning unscathed. What did it look like for Koskie holding the runner at third?... (and another flub play as I type this.)
Dave Till - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 04:59 PM EDT (#109025) #
I'm wondering whether everybody is suffering from a case of Opening Day jitters, and is trying too hard as a consequence. Hudson shouldn't have bothered trying to turn the double play with Crawford running.

Seeing Phelps and Gonzo whiff was just like old times. Phelps, with his long swing, was hopelessly overmatched against Doc.
Jordan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:00 PM EDT (#109026) #
Great start to the Game Thread, folks -- this is exactly the kind of dialogue we were envisioning! Kudos to all participants.

Shouldn't the TB players be made to wear white belts and white shoes? Isn't that what old people wear after they retire and move to Florida? And what's with a 4:00 start time when dinner is meant to be eaten at 4:30?

Donkit R.K. - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:01 PM EDT (#109028) #
Should Hudson have even made that throw on the attempted DP? Do you think he hurried it knowing who the batter was?
Joe - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:02 PM EDT (#109029) #
Ok, sorry, folks. I cursed Halladay.

A couple of errors, and at least one more throw that could have been an error. If only one runs scores, it shows just how good Halladay is going.

And he does it, the second (?) strikeout of the inning. There's nothing better than a pitcher who's tossing well.

Seeing Phelps and Gonzo whiff was just like old times. Phelps, with his long swing, was hopelessly overmatched against Doc.

How many saw the Gonzalez at-bat playing out exactly as it did? In ten years, Gonzalez never improved one iota as a ball player. No "peak until 27/28, decline thereafter" trend line for him. More like a Britney Spears EEG.

Dave Till - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:10 PM EDT (#109043) #
One advantage the Jays might have this year: people forget that the club has some actual hitters up there. In 2003, I don't think Brazelton would have challenged V-Dub with a fastball. Hopefully, they can crank a few before everybody updates their scouting reports.

Has the O-Dog ever turned on a fastball like that, especially while batting left?
Nolan - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:11 PM EDT (#109044) #
Did anyone notice that on that pitch that Brazelton bounced into the dirt, the Devil Rays catcher, Toby Hall, turned away from it like he was a little scared of the pitch? I do not think I've ever seen that before.
Dave Till - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:12 PM EDT (#109045) #
Brazelton is notorious for having problems with his command. It can't be fun to be on the receiving end of a collection of unguided missiles.

And the umpire's probably not enjoying it either.
dp - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:14 PM EDT (#109046) #
OK, hope this contributes enough to justify the post-

Great to see some power here, very nice...

Alex Gonzalez is an amazing player, in that his complete lack of development has to be historically uncommon. I mean, he failed to have one "complete outlier", failed to hone any one aspect of his game, and succeeded in holding a starting job. Rey Ordonez was similar, but came up later and hadn't really demonstrated significant offensive ability before coming to the US. I had huge hopes for Gonzalez, really thought he was gonna be a mini-A-Rod, but no such luck...
Donkit R.K. - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:16 PM EDT (#109047) #
Lots of people here know a whole lot more than I do about infield defense. What's the story with that last play by Koskie? I didn't think it looked like it took that long to get to him... and the spin? Maybe I wasn't paying attention cloesly enough, it just seemed unnecessary to me.
Gerry - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:18 PM EDT (#109048) #
Wells and Hudson's bombs point out that hitters who slump during spring training are often just getting their slumps out of the way, and they get set just as the season starts.

Conversely some players who start quickly cool off as the season starts, i.e. Tuffy Rhodes.
Dave Till - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:19 PM EDT (#109049) #

Interesting decision to pull the infield in in the 4th inning with 1 out and a runner (and a slow one in Phelps) at third.

Worked out as Hudson caught a liner and Doc got a 5-3 to end the inning.

Yep. It's official. Adams is the heckler's target this year.

44 strikes

Well, we've had our first of many 'Halladay pitched too many innings in 2002 & 2003' comments from the visiting teams.

Halladay's problem was his workout intensity off the field. On the field he was always quite efficient and rarely had a high pitch count. His PAP score was actually quite low in 2003.

Hypothesis: the area in front of home plate is made of India rubber. Those balls are bouncing way up in front of home plate.

Anyone else wish we had Phelps instead on Hillenbrand as our DH? A Phelps/Rios/Cat/Gross/Hinske rotation would be nice. Hard to convince myself not to pull for him- I still think dumping him will prove to be one of JP's more foolish moves...

Just what the Doctor ordered. Ground ball, 6-4-3, inning over, no runs allowed.

Through 6, Doc's thrown 78 pitches, has 6 Ks, no BBs, and no HRs. DIPS approves of this performance.
Chuck - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:47 PM EDT (#109062) #
I haven't seen all the pitches thrown to Phelps today, but what I have seen seems to contradict what the scouting report should be. He spent much of 2004 flailing at sliders low and away that he'd either swing over top of or pull weakly to third base. It seems to me that he's being thrown a lot of pitches on the inner half of the plate. It also seems to me that he's standing a little closer to the plate than last year, perhaps as a way to better reach pitches on the outer half.
CaramonLS - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:50 PM EDT (#109063) #
dp I'm not sure as using him exclusively as our DH, but maybe giving him 60% the ABs vs. Right and all the ABs vs. left.

Hes having a nice day no doubt, but we'll have to wait and see if this is his year to turn it around vs. RHPs.

I don't want Phelps over anybody currently in the Jays lineup. It's not that I think he's never going to be a better overall hitter—although I do think that—it's that Phelps was just never going to develop as a Jay. He needed a change of scenery, and while I hope he does succeed, I don't think it reflects badly on J.P. if he does.

Hillenbrand, while he doesn't have the same power potential, will (I think) be a better overall hitter than Phelps.

Donkit R.K. - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:52 PM EDT (#109065) #
I think Phelps is a classic example (a la Vince Carter for the basketball fans amongst us, Fredrik Modin, maybe, if anybody else out there is a hockey fan) of a player that will have a nice career, but it probabaly wouldn't have worked out had he stayed with his first team. He seemed to stagnate with the Jays and watching him really was getting frustrating (until the soft tossing lefties hit the mound). In the long run, I think that people will see trading Phelps as a bad move for JP, but I really don't think we can blame him - I also think that Crozier was a solid return given the timing (i.e. not trading Phelps while he was on the cover of BP).
Pepper Moffatt - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 05:55 PM EDT (#109066) #
If Phelps develops it won't just be a mistake for J.P. Any of the other 29 non-Tampa Bay teams could have had him for a song this off-season.

Pretty backhanded catch by Adams running out to left field. Jeter-esque (in a good way).

The next liner looked like it hooked back towards Adams and he overdove the ball a bit. You have to take the good with the bad at this point (I suppose that's also Jeter-esque).

One of the great things about Halladay when he's pitching well is the pace of the game. This one will likely be over in 2.5 hours which is the ideal baseball pace for me.
Andrew K - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 06:03 PM EDT (#109070) #
Do we assume that Halladay comes out now? He's thrown about 90 pitches. No sense risking that priceless shoulder.

Brazelton was fairly efficient himself. He threw 81 pitches with 55 of them strikes, a real solid game. If he keeps commanding his pitches like that, the D'Rays should be very pleased.
Braby21 - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 06:10 PM EDT (#109076) #
Doc should come out to face the first batter, and then let SS can come out for the Lefty's.

The Tampa Bay colour guy is saying that Gibbons' move, to bring in Schoeneweis, is "controversial". Doc didn't seem terribly happy about something -- probably the outfield playing so deep.
Andrew K - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 06:16 PM EDT (#109082) #
You can't possibly call Schoeneweis a LOOGY in this situation. Clearly he's a LTOGY.

He was nasty against Huff and Lee.

I've been one of the few saying that SS isn't on the team to be a LOOGY.

If he stays in and faces Phelps, instead of Gibbons going to a RH, I think it'll show the Jays don't intend to use SS as a LOOGY.

And of course, here comes Gibbons with the hook.

Batista is coming in to pitch in the 8th. It's nice to see Gibbons using his best pitcher (i.e. closer) when the situation is toughest (i.e. tying run on base). Whether or not you agree that Batista is his best bullpen arm is an entirely different subject...

Hypothetical question:

Jay's come out in the 9th and bust it open. Bautista pitches a scoreless 9th. (Final score: 10-2)

Does Bautista get the save, a 'Hold', or nothing?
Dave Till - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 06:27 PM EDT (#109095) #
I'd hate to see Schoeneweis used exclusively as a spot lefty, but I agree that it's better to put a righty in against Phelps.

One of the TV guys mentioned that Batista has a very resilient arm - he can apparently throw 25 pitches a day for five straight days, if he needs to. I guess this is why they moved him to the closer spot.

Baseball is a game of inches - had Phelps hit that a few feet in either direction, Batista would have blown the save right there.

I don't think Phelps has shortened his swing any, so I still don't think he'll be of much use.

Nice play by Hinske on the ground ball - he went several steps to his right to field it. Delgado wouldn't have gotten to that ball.

I think folks need to remember that when a player moves down the defensive spectrum, like Hinske, from third to first, it's usually an easy transition. Those 2 late inning snags by Eric were very impressive, no way Delgado is within 5 feet of those grounders.
Dave Till - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 06:44 PM EDT (#109111) #
That was nice defense by Hinske. If he keeps that up, there won't be much getting through the right side of the infield this year.

In fact, if Adams gets over his rookie jitters, everybody out there is an above-average defender except Cat.

Oh, yeah, nice long bomb from Eric too - he got his hips out of the way and was able to turn on that fastball.

No winless April for Doc this year! Great start to the season.

I'm been known not to be a Hinske supporter, but if plays like he did today he will start to win me over.

Very clutch 2 run bomb in the 9th and several nice plays on D.

Solid performance by Doc, SS, and Batista.

Not too many hits by the Jays today but I'll glady take those 3 homers.

The only real negative was too many swinging first pitch outs. Wells and Gross did it twice, Cat and Koskie did it once.

Well, that was a nice way to start the season.

Brazelton pitched a great game today. Take out Cat-Dog-Wells and their 2B-HR-HR, and you have seven perfect innings. 10-9-9-9-7-6-11 pitches in those 7 innings without those three hits mentioned above. That's amazing. The applause he received after Colome came in was very well deserved, too bad the D-Rays couldn't get anything more. Too bad for Dewon, that is. I'm happy Gonzo kept striking out.

Is this the same Roy Halladay? He's supposed to suck in April.

Jamie Campbell had the line of the day: "In the background, you hear one of the annoying fans here in St. Petersburg."

Does anyone else know what Adams was doing on that play in the third? He threw it worse than I've ever seen him throw. Thankfully, he made me feel a little better in the ninth with those two plays on Hall and Gonzalez. Oh, and his non-play in the 8th was even better. I expected the rookie to try and push for the double play there, but he didn't rush the throw, knowing the pitcher would have to cover the base.

Wells' homerun is a front-runner for the best moment of the year. I'm not kidding. The O-Dog's blast was nice and it gave Toronto the lead, but V-Dub killed that baseball.

Pat Tabler, at one point, called Russ Adams "Russ Jackson." I don't know when or where Tabbie, an American, would ever encounter a CFL player from 20-30 years ago, and I don't know why he got the names mixed up. Jerry Howarth saying "Greg Gross" for Gabe is easy to forgive; Greg played 17 years in the majors. But Russ Jackson?

One last thing: Koskie did not strike out in the ninth. That was a terrible call. I thought the umpire was really inconsistent today -- Ed Rapuano. Our dear friend Philly C. was at second, if you didn't know.

The D looks VASTLY improved. Koskie made a play Hinske never could have... Hinske made two plays Delgado doesn't even make in his dreams. The infield has more range than a sheep farm in Australia.

Still, do I feel great. The boys are back!

I'm almost always happy to see a third baseman take charge of a grounder and cut off the shortstop

Ooh, good point. I noticed that too -- Koskie cutting off Adams in the...well, I forget the inning and I can't find it on my scoresheet here. But it was good. I liked the defense today, not counting the third inning. If we can see 8 perfect innings and a couple of misthrows in the odd inning every game this year, I'm happy.

Ist base is generally considered a much easier defensive position than 3rd base and after seeing Eric's improvements at 3rd the last year or two I would be really surprised if he didn't do very good at first, especially with a few months of adjustment time. One bonus might very well be the hitting as less defensive worries quite often translate into better offense as there will be less defensive pressure at first base, at least in the long term. Being in the west, I did not get to watch the game as I was at work, but after reading the boxscore and this thread it appears the Jays had a pretty good opening day. I surely won't change my thoughts on this season based on one game, but a win is ALWAYS better than a loss :) So I'm still sticking with a 3rd place by a hair in the division.

Considering the Jays were planning on playing some more small ball, I expected Cat to not be hitting leadoff

Actually, Fordin reported a while back that the Left Fielder Of The Day would lead off. Tomorrow, it will be Johnson batting first against the lefty Kazmir. As for Gross, I can see the case to put him ahead of Zaun, for no other reason than to break up the three lefties in a row (The Gabe-Thrillhouse-Cat), but Gibby threw Reeder in there at the first sign of Casey Fossum warming up, thus removing the L-L-L at 8-9-1.

For what it's worth, my lineup for today's opener would have looked the same as the one Gibbons made up, maybe with Zaun and Gross switching spots in the order.

That was a lot of fun, lots of positives. Good to see Hinske hit one out, he needs to do that about 20 more times this season. However, the highlight for me was Tom calling the 4th inning and then the Jays rallying. That was special. You're right Joeblow, we do have a secret weapon now and I hope we get to hear it lots more as the season goes on.
Apparently Tom Cheek will be making another visit on Wednesday, again in the 3rd and 4th innings.
Warren Sawkiw didn't do a bad job either, he just let Tom and Jerry do their thing until Tom invited him to speak up; classy moves by all concerned.
God it was great to hear baseball again.
Get well Tom, you are missed.

From what I heard of Campbell, he sounded very good. Relaxed, intelligent. He seemed a little uncertain of how to call the home runs though. Maybe it was the back-to-back that threw him. Fairly low key on the Hudson home run. But "Bye, Bye, Baseball!" on the Wells homer was a bit cheesy.

Overall, however, a real improvement on what Sportsnet has offered in the past. He sounds like a guy who will age well on the job.

One more thing:
WOOOO HOOOOOO!!!!!
JAYS WIN!!

Missed the darn game, westcoast time workin'.

Congrats to the broadcast teams, great to hear Tom and Jerry were together today and how about those Jays.

Amen to that improved infield defence across the board. Every position should be better except second base, where we had the deserved Gold Glove winner. Adams will have some errors, but he looks to have very impressive range and hopefully will settle down after the first couple of months. Koskie and Hinske's improvements have already been mentioned.

Doc looked sharp today and would only have given up one run if anyone but Carl Crawford (or Ichiro) was batting at the top of the Devil Rays lineup.

I was really impressed by Pat Tabler. He seemed to fit in well alongside Campbell and sounded more comfortable than he is beside Rod Black.

I know it's early BUT you gotta love it... the Red Sox are tied with TB for LAST place. Sigh... if only it were late September!

I got a question related to todays game.
Halladay pitches 7.33 innings and leaves with a lead (3-2 Jays). Then in the 9th "The Dude" hits a bomb to center so its 5-2 , if the rays would have gotten two in the 9th so making the final score 5-4, does Halladay still get the win?

Also i just love the nickname "The Governor" for Governor Bush
greenfrog - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 10:47 PM EDT (#109178) #
Missed the game (I was in transit, with no radio) but what an awesome start to the season. You just know the team's gotta be feeling pretty good.

greenfrog - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 10:56 PM EDT (#109179) #
Yeah, Halladay gets the win. He left with the lead, which the Jays never relinquished, even though the Rays (hypothetically) crawled back to within one.

Now let's say Halladay had left with a 3-2 lead in the 7th. The Dude hits a two-run bomb in the top of the 8th making it 5-2. Schoeneweis pitches the bottom of the 8th but gives up three runs (which tie the game). Then let's say the Gabe hits a solo shot in the top of the 9th. Batista closes it out in the 9th and the Jays win 6-5. SS, not Roy, would get the win (and El Artista the save).

Petey Baseball and Flex: thanks for the kind words. Flex, you're right; sat back slightly on the first day just to make sure there were no mistakes. My parents liked the "Bye Bye baseball" thing, though I didn't. It just came out! Sorry man...

Hey Jamie, I thought you and Tabler worked well together. Neither of you OVER-commentated. Please keep that up--and forget about a "home-run call". Just call it each time as you feel. Nice beginning, and good luck the rest of the way.
Thomas - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 11:32 PM EDT (#109186) #
JDog, yes, in that case Halladay gets the win as he left with a lead that was never relenquished.
Justin (T-Birds) - Monday, April 04 2005 @ 11:33 PM EDT (#109188) #
Agreed with the above sentiments about the broadcasting team. I haven't been interested in listening to the Jays' broadcasters since Shulman and Martinez left. Today though I found that they worked very well with the ebb and flow of the game. The anecdotes were great, and I thought that they added a lot to the broadcast.

Tabler was a lot more enjoyable to listen to than he is alongside Rod Black, and I thought that Jamie did a great job at asking relevant questions and really drawing on Tabler's experience. The fact that they'll only improve with experience is also very encouraging; a very nice start!

The only negative aspects of Sportsnet's coverage that I can think of are repeated instances of missing the first pitch back from commercial, and the brutal little "vignette commercials" (similar to the Canadian Tire commercials during Hockey Night in Canada). I find them really intrusive. Also, I wish that they'd replace "hits" with "slugging", but that's a minor quibble.

Sorry, I completely missed greenfrog's answer to the question.

Thanks Willy. I'm glad you think that way, and I hope others do too. Baseball fans understand the game, and don't need some dweeb like me talking when talk is unnecessary. You might see alot of that on Sportsnet... just letting the pictures and sound tell the story.
Braby21 - Tuesday, April 05 2005 @ 12:27 AM EDT (#109193) #
Just one more thing Jamie...can Sportsnet get a mic on that "annoying" fan! I know some ppl hate that dude but I love what he brings to the park, I wish there were 50, 000 more of him at every game.

I can't wait to watch Russ Adams bat tomorrow (yes on TSN).

I was not only impressed with Hinske's range at first, but more importantly for me he seemed very comfortable receiving the ball....and he was getting all kinds of crazy throws this game.

I look forward to that. I love the way Joe Buck does it on ESPN. Sometimes when a player grounds out, all he says is "inning over." There's no need to describe in detail what happened, we all saw it. I love that kind of broadcasting.

Jdog - Tuesday, April 05 2005 @ 01:44 AM EDT (#109199) #
Thanks greenfrog and Thomas for the reply's. I was just always unsure about that. A part of me was thinking that Roy was only in for three of the jays runs, so if the rays ever surpassed 3 he wouldn't get the win...but im glad that its not like that ..1. because it would be stupid and 2. I got Halladay in my bauxite pool.

To gv27.. great job today

Oh and Tabler calling Russ Adams , Russ Jackson , i thought it was more of the ball being inbetween Reed Johnson and Adams so he started saying johnson but realised it wasnt right and threwout jackson.
And i noticed right after that he made sure to refer to him as Russ Adams , so mention of the mistake was made....is that when someone taps him on the shoulder and tells him his mistake?
Braby21 - Tuesday, April 05 2005 @ 01:50 AM EDT (#109201) #
I've always wonder that...does your partner write on a piece of paper, Russ ADAMS so you know that you said something wrong. I remember Jamie said "unfortunately for the Jays the ball was fair" when they were batting, and I knew that he meant foul. Obviously this happens a lot in games b/c they are human, but does anyone try to tell them on their computer screen or something? I've always wondered.
Mylegacy - Tuesday, April 05 2005 @ 02:02 AM EDT (#109202) #
Dear Sportsnet

Please show the ball speed. A key to pitching successfully is changing speed, I want to know the speed!! Pat would ocassionally mention a pitches speed... I want to see all the speeds. No reason in this day and age why we can't set that up.

Also, the "strike zone box" today some "strikes" definitely weren't even near the zone. The Umps will get better when they know EVERYONE knows every mistake they make.

Pat and Jamie were great together. I really enjoyed their work.

The Beer Club was great today, gents. I look forward to many more (though not nearly as much as I'm looking forward to getting my butt back in the blue seats to watch the home side play -- I'll do anything not to say Rogers Centre...Ooops).

RE: Umpires...
Turns out Box favourite Phil Cuzzi was overseeing Second Base this evening. But judging by some of the balls and strikes, he must've snuck behind the plate for a few Blue Jay at-bats.

I'm glad to hear that gv27 had a good start too. Sadly I was lumped with the Fox Sports Net on mlb.tv fuzzyfeed -- if last year was anything to go by, I'll rarely get to see the Jays broadcast :(

A nice new feature is that you can replay anything in the last 30 minutes (adjustable) of the game, and then go back to the live feed. So instead of watching adverts for companies which don't operate in my country, I can try to find and replay highlights of the previous inning.

Let's try to keep this win in perspective. To lose 100 games you have to win 62, and this is just one of the 62, right? ;)
HollywoodHartman - Tuesday, April 05 2005 @ 07:43 AM EDT (#109206) #
If I'm not mistaken Russ Jackson was a CFL QB, maybe Pat just messed that up.

"Please show the ball speed"

For whatever reason I don't think it was available yesterday. The CBS Sportsline site didn't have it for that game (but did for other games), and the Devil Ray broadcast didn't have it either.
costanza - Tuesday, April 05 2005 @ 11:16 AM EDT (#109229) #
Nobody else commented on my favourite line from the broadcast, so I'm wondering if I imagined it now. Anyways, presuming I didn't, I loved the "How about those Blue Jays!" after the final out. The line definitely brought a smile to my face...
uglyone - Tuesday, April 05 2005 @ 11:22 AM EDT (#109231) #
If I'm not mistaken, aren't Wells (hr), Hinske (hr), Hudson (hr), Halladay (w) the four guys J.P. called into his hotel room last year and told them he expected them to become the new team leaders in the post-Delgado era?

I'd say that's good leadership.

"I'd be willing to bet that the Jays would be at about 30-35K if their home opener wasn't against the BoSox"

Last year the home opener drew 47,817 against the Tigers.
2003 against the Yanks drew 50,119
2002 against the Twins drew 47,469

I'm almost tearing up here with gratitude. Thanks so much for realising (along with your producers, I suspect) that what we as fans need most is just to watch the game.

I was at Beer Club, so I didn't get the chance to hear much of the broadcast over the hubbub. Generally very well done, I thought - one thing that was remarked upon by a few of us was that you were apparently aiming for a deeper and more resonant tone than we're used to from your work on Sportsnet news. Is that deliberate? It sounded fine, but the delivery came off a bit slow-paced at times.

gv27 - Tuesday, April 05 2005 @ 04:08 PM EDT (#109297) #
Craig B: You're correct about the slower-pace. Just wanted to make sure the broadcast evolved with minimal mistakes. I made a few, but I'm human. I thought briefly about correcting Pat on the Russ Jackson comment, but quickly realized he's human too. The man knows his Canadian football!

Costanza: You heard correctly. I saw Tom Cheek prior to the game and thought it would be good to honour him, considering all the pain he's experienced recently.

Brady21: I think we let the "annoying fan" basically have an inning to himself a few years ago, so there is no plan to do it again. In fact, if I was a season ticket holder down there (with kids) I'd want him removed. The guy is a transplanted Canadian, if you can believe it!

By the way, if I don't get a chance to respond to questions or concerns, I hope you'll pardon my inability to find the time.

Jdog - Tuesday, April 05 2005 @ 04:42 PM EDT (#109306) #
Oh No! Derek Jeter just homered in the bottom of the ninth for a yankees win over Boston. I can't handle that...I just am annoyed by him too much.

Jamie, first of all, thanks for taking the time to post.

One change I'd like to see is actually something from the past -- the old score bug that was in the top left corner of the screen. The current one across the top of the screen takes up too much space and it's not something that you can take a quick glance at to get all the information, unlike the old one. This topic came up here last year and there seemed to be strong support for bringing back the old bug.
