Again, happy long weekend news: this game is being broadcast on the radio and at http://fan590.com . Perhaps today the Jays can take some revenge for that unhappy homestand that opened last season at the then-SkyDome and beat the tar outta the Tigers today?

I'd be up for that.

anyone have the starting lineups?
Named For Hank - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 01:44 PM EST (#107644) #
Cat in left, Gabe Gross in right, Myers catching, Adams at short, Hudson on second. That's all I've caught, missed the start of the game.

Pete Walker has struck out seven through four.

I think everyone's offline enjoying their Easter. And that's where I'm going now. ;)

anyone have the starting lineups?

Heh. I always have the starting lineups:
Cat LF, Hudson 2B, Wells CF, Koskie 3B, Hillenbrand DH, Hinske 1B, Gross RF, Myers C, Adams SS.

7 K's through four for Pete Strikeouter, and he's pulled for the Flyin' Hawaiian.

I'm listening to the game om MLB gamesday audio...don't know if anyone would want some updates, but if you do here some are...

In bottom of 6th inning:

Cat (had a double today) on first.
Bonderman pitching to Hudson....Hudson hits a double (over leftfielders head), scores Cat, 2-0 Jays.
Wells up (0-2 today, reached on an error)...
Its going...going...gon- FOUL! So close to a homer! The wind pushed the ball about 40 feet to make it foul. Count 3-2...ball four, Vernon walks.
Koskie up now; chops it to pitcher who throws it into centerfield. Hudson scores, Wells to 3rd and Koskie on second (pinch runner in for Koskie- Bryant Nelson [sp?]).
Shea up (DH- doubled today and scored off Hinske's double in first)...pops up for the first out.
Hinske up: 3-0 count, walks- bases loaded.
Rios now at-bat; shallow fly caught for out; Vernon stays at third, 2 out.
Myers up, works count t0 3-0 and walks Vernon in on the next pitch. 4-0 Jays.
Russ Adams is ninth batter in the sixth for Jays...ground short and it thrown out.

4-0 Jays, end of sixth.
Nolan - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 02:34 PM EST (#107650) #
Top of seventh.

Nelson at third, McDonald at SS.

Glynn pitching.

First batter flies out.
Carlos pena flies out to Wells. 2 out.
Alexis Gomex up. Glynn falls to 3-0 and fights back to 3-2
*Apparently Glynn short arms the ball to the plate...harder to pick up ball (lots of catchers throw like this)*
Glynn walks Gomez on an inside pitch- first walk of ST, against 5 k's.
Thames up; ground sout to second. Inning over.

Also, tomorrow the Jays vs. Yanks game is on MLB.TV
Nolan - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 02:41 PM EST (#107651) #
Bottom of seventh...

Cat singles to lead off inning.
O-Dawg or O-Dog strikes out and is thrown out at first....

...it was a passed ball :) Cat goes to second.

Wells grounds out to short, Cat to third - 2 out.
Brian or Bryant Nelson up; pops out to Gomez in shallow center.

End of seventh, 4-0 Jays
Nolan - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 02:43 PM EST (#107652) #
I guess no one's here...oh well.

Jays have limited Tigers to one hit over seven innings.

I'm Here... YAY!

Anywho nice to see walker do well, I've been hoping he grabs a pen spot for a while.
Sister - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 02:59 PM EST (#107655) #
I'm here as well and appreciate the commentary. Who has pitched for the Jays so far?

Walker
League
Glynn?
Nolan - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 03:00 PM EST (#107656) #
I'm guessing that Walker will fill in for Lilly should Lilly not be able to make his first start.

I'd love to see League get a chance at starting this year, rather than stay in the bullpen all year. If we can get League's role defined this year by trying as both starter and relief, it will make '06 that much easier.
Nolan - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 03:03 PM EST (#107657) #
Scott Downs pitched an inning.

Matt Whiteside is pitching now in the ninth.

Hinske apparently just made a great play at first to rob someone (Pena?) of a single
fozzy - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 03:07 PM EST (#107658) #
Jerry just said Chris Michaluk is now a lefty submariner, which is news to me. Has he pitched yet this spring?

He also mentioned that if he fails to make the Jays he might go the Pete Walker route and head to Japan for a year.
Nolan - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 03:09 PM EST (#107660) #
Whiteside just struck out someone.
Pena up (so i guess it was someone elso who Hinske robbed), 2 out and count at 0-2...ball, 1-2...and Whiteside hits the knob of Pena's bat, still 1-2...fouled off, still 1-2...fouled off again...1-2 pitch- swing and a miss!

Game over, jays win.

Jays hurlers limit Tigers to ONE hit all game!

Gotta say I'm impressed with the chemisty between Sawkiw and Howarth. Warren sounded very good today -- timely analysis and sounding very comfortable. I missed his debut yesterday, but I'm quite impressed at that today's broadcast.
Ryan C - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 03:11 PM EST (#107663) #
Excellent day for Jays pitching and defense. I think League gave up a double and that was the only hit allowed all game. Walker with 7Ks, Whiteside ends the game with a K. Nice to see them making the decisions a little tougher on the management.

Wilner on now with JaysTalk...

Cool, this is the first time I have ever heard Wilner on the radio...I'm excited
Nolan - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 03:27 PM EST (#107665) #
Wilner:

*Thinks Chulk and league should start over Lightenberg- put him on the DL or just let it go as he is a sunk cost anyways.

*Thinks Jays are trying hard to trade Justin Miller.

*Talk about Ty Goodwin...lavishes praise on the caller for caring about the Jays' "25th man" type players.

Ahhh, MLB is "yelling over Wilner with updates...oh and it stops, back to Wilner.

*Rios will play regularly, Gross won't take his job. Thinks Jays might send a pitcher down to keep Gross.

*Is okay with giving Chacin a chance in the rotation...it's not necessarily a permanent move.
Pepper Moffatt - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 04:12 PM EST (#107666) #
Did Wilner mention anything else?

Thanks go out to NFH for starting the game thread. It was my responsibility and I totally forgot. I guess I should give him some Easter candy or something. :)
rtcaino - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 04:54 PM EST (#107667) #
Wilner also paid lip service to the theory that the Jays should try to get Adrian Gonzalez. Mentioning that they need arms, and we have arms. But he raised the concern of where we'd put him? You know, given the logjam of major league ready talent at first base making near the league minimum for the next three years. I think for a trade like this, you make room.

To me, this trade makes sense. A slugging first basemen is organizational weak spot. It is my suspicion there's no chance that the Jays will be able to compete with the Yanks and Sox unless we get a good bat for cheap locked up.
Mick Doherty - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 05:11 PM EST (#107670) #
Lip service is right. I imagine the conversation going something like this:

RICCIARDI: Ho Joh, I'm calling to ask abotu Adrian Gonzalez.
HART: You and 15 other guys, JP.
RICCIARDI: So what's it going to take?
HART: For our top prospect, the former #1 overall choice, leading the club in slugging and RBI this spring and slated to be our starting designated hitter? Let's see ... you can give me David Bush and who else in addition?
RICCIARDI: {{click}}
Mick Doherty - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 05:13 PM EST (#107672) #
Except Ricciardi wouldn't speak in typos, of course.
Rob - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 06:54 PM EST (#107678) #
No, it's secret GM-talk, so Peter Gammons, listening on the extension, can't hear it.

Then Gammo relates what he heard to his fellow writers using 45-word sentences with eight semicolons.
Pepper Moffatt - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 07:47 PM EST (#107682) #
Gonzalez will be cheap and young. I don't know if he'll be a good hitter, though. His minor league numbers are pretty lousy, though he's always been young for his league. He doesn't have much power, though that could develop. PECOTA loves him in the long term (though they project he'll perform below replacement value in 2005), but IMO he'll be lucky to be the next Willie Upshaw.

He's pretty highly regarded, though, so I think Mick is right. It would take Bush to get him. Possibly more.
Jim - Sunday, March 27 2005 @ 09:01 PM EST (#107684) #
I lived around the corner from Willie Upshaw in Fairfield, Connecticut. He hsd a sweet place. The front yard had a cool brook and there was a bunch of different levels to the lawn. Very cool.

I forgot how to do a link in html, but did anyone read this article? It said that there might be a Gross/Rios platoon and that Rios may go down to Triple A after Lilly is activated. This would certainly surprise me. I personally think that Rios did pretty well last year and that he deserves to prove he can hit for power in the big leagues. Hopefully, Rios, will take some at bats away from Hinske and Hillenbrand at least.

I thought he sounded like he was settling into it today. Didn't hear the whole game, but he was good.

Mick Doherty - Monday, March 28 2005 @ 12:18 AM EST (#107693) #
with eight semicolons.

Wouldn't that just be four full colons?

R Billie - Monday, March 28 2005 @ 04:38 AM EST (#107695) #
Guys like Gonzalez and Kotchman are good and probably major league ready. But they aren't going to be cheap. I don't see the Jays being able to trade for someone like that until the trade deadline where they might have something teams like Texas or Anaheim need to make a playoff push.

At this point of the season, the young players with all the potential in the world are at their most expensive.
Pepper Moffatt - Monday, March 28 2005 @ 08:34 AM EST (#107697) #
I meant cheap salarywise. You're right, though: they'd cost a lot to acquire.
