Looking at the schedule, a bunch of other grapefruit league games have already been cancelled due to rain, so I'm thinking that this game might not happen.

No TV, no radio from either side today, but those of you with Gameday can listen to a Toronto-helmed webcast. Well, you can if they play.

Didn't see this anywhere else so I thought I would post it here... Billy Koch was just released by the jays.

WTF? I checked gameday audio earlier and the link for Toronto was there, but it has since dissapeared.

There goes 900K down the tube... but that's ok... we have the money...

In the end, a good decision... he just didn't have it anymore...

According to a headline on the offical jays site, the game is rained off.

I sat beside a scout from the Cubs yesterday in Dunedin and the best that Koch hit on the radar gun was 92 mph and that pitch hit one of the Twin's batters.
Most of his stuff was in the 89-91 mph range and did not fool anyone.

Word just on the Fan now that Tom Cheek has had a setback with his cancer and won't be starting the season on the air.

It did sound as though he was struggling. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

There is the steroid thing going on right now in Washington. I'm listening to Fox Sports Radio right now and they are playing clips of testimony. Canseco said he wil take the fifth because of no immuninity and Macgwire said he will not answer questions because he does not want to comprimise anyone.
Sherrystar - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 03:16 PM EST (#106493) #
Can anyone tell me with a straight face that Bonds or Macgwire didn't use roids? This whole thing is a joke... and it's all MLB's fault for turning a bling eye to it for years!

Wishing Tom Cheek all the best...

Well, I'm back in my hotel. Today's game was washed out - and the Jays had the courtesy of keeping the $80 for our tickets as well - no refunds. We have 18 months to trade our tickets in for any Spring Training or Dunedin Jays game - very nice of them, but today was our only day in Dunedin. We are supposed to be flying home on the morning of 3/24, but I rescheduled my flight (for $167 - thanks US Air) to Thursday evening so I could attend the 3/24 game vs the Phillies and the rest of my family will be heading home w/out seeing the Jays. So the other $54 the Jays get to keep - maybe they can put a few extra blades of turf grass in center field for me at the Rogers Centre. :-O

I was able to meet up with our friends Alexis Rios, Guillermo Quiroz, Brandon League, Francisco Rosario and a few others. The guys got to go home early, and the first stretch tomorrow isn't until 3 pm because they have a night game. So we have some time to kill. We're going to hit the mall with a couple of the guys and then a restaurant or two and kick back tonight. It's St. Patrick's day ya know.

Francisco Rosario said he's heading into St. Pete for tomorrow night's game and expects to pitch. He's excited for the opportunity to pitch at the Major League level - and doesn't care how he is used so long as he make it there. He continued by saying he's never been to SkyDome, but heard it is massive.

Brandon League loves throwing to Q - Guillermo Quiroz - he loves the big target and his calming demeanor. This year is the first time he really got to throw to him. He also is very excited about the opportunity to pitch at the Major League level for the Jays. I gave him pictures from his Major League debut at Yankee Stadium that I took and a couple of DVDs of the game that I made. We talked about how pumped up he was - and how he felt warming up and ultimately getting to pitch on that mound in New York.

Alexis Rios said he was supposed to be playing right field today. He is "all better" and ready to "do it all". He said he put on 15 pounds of muscle over the winter by lifting weights and eating healthy. He said (as he lifted his shirt) "I even have fat on my belly! - HaHa!" He feels strong, and now that he knows his way around at the Major League level, he can concentrate on baseball 100%.

There were only about 100 of us at the park today, but I was able to buy a green Jays cap, with shamrocks on it before they all sold out. The Jays were supposed to wear green uniforms today and then they were to be auctioned afterwards - but that got scrapped. Too bad.

I was able to grab a Lebatts before we left, so hooray for that!
Spartan - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 03:20 PM EST (#106496) #
The radio announcers were talking about how Macgwire has lost a lot of weight since he stopped playing. I think all of Bonds, Sosa and Macqwire did steroids. In my mind, Babe Ruth/Roger Maris still hold the homerun records.

Doesn't Congress have anything better to do than investigate whether baseball players are using steroids? Okay, it's a subject of some public concern, but couldn't they be looking at education, or healthcare, or that whole war on terror thingie?

I wasn't a fan of the Koch signing at the time and his ST performance did nothing to change my mind. I felt like he should have beem offered a camp only invite.

If the Jays have to swallow his contract, Mr. Rogers can't be too pleased $900,000 just went into the crapper.

For what it's worth, I've started a free Fantasy League on Yahoo, and we're having our draft this weekend. It's a private league so if you're interested leave a message and I'll email you the # and password.

As far as Koch is concerned: it's clear to me by now that he isn't going to get any better. When he's throwing hard he can go to his slider, but when he's throwing soft he can't. he is going to get lit up wherever he ends up playing, and that includes AAA unfortunately. With the plethora (I love "The Three Amigos") of young arms in the system, keeping him around accomplishes nothing except taking up space. This is addition by subtraction.

Sweat, I'm no fan of rain outs either, but I don't think you have to look much further than Tom Cheek's situation to find an example of something worse.

yes. Pardon me for not thinking of the multitude of other things that are obviously worse than a rained out game.
kpataky - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 05:23 PM EST (#106517) #
There were a bunch of kids from some school an hour away who practiced for 2 months the American Anthem to perform it today at the game. After the game was called, there was a break in the rain for 15 minutes and they let the kids out on the field, jacked up the PA and they performed for the 5 of us and the rest of the Jays that were still in the park.

Also, some guy travelled 5300 miles from Saskatchewan for today's game - his only shot at seeing the Jays - boy was he ticked.

Not sure if it has been posted already

But on mlb.com the jays site has an artice , where JP mentions that Gabe has earned himself a spot on the roster when the team heads north...He mentioned how they are going to see how the next few weeks pan out , but as now "Babe" has put himself on their radar screen...Looks Like he may start the year as the teams Left Fielder....What does that mean for everybody else
R Billie - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 05:40 PM EST (#106521) #
I would assume that means not good things for either Hinske or Catalanatto. Johnson and Hillenbrand are relatively safe because of their lefty hitting status.
Scott - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 05:43 PM EST (#106522) #
Blair in today's G&M had a brief mention that Toronto was thinking of platooning Gabe with Rios.
Craig B - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 05:46 PM EST (#106523) #
Jdog, I'm hoping it means six relievers to begin with. With McDonald, Cat, Sparky, Myers/Quiroz, and Menechino as a five-man bench, you could still make the roster if you only brought 11 pitchers north. That's a pen of Batista, Speier, Schoeneweis, League, Frasor, and Chulk, with Kerry Ligtenberg being released or sent to the DL. Alternatively, League could start at Syracuse and Ligtenberg put on the roster if he's ready.

With lots of off days in April, you can always use Towers or Chacin in the pen if they won't be starting for some time.

Does that leave anyone out? Is Justin Miller out of options, or Ryan Glynn?
R Billie - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 05:48 PM EST (#106524) #

Platooning Gabe and Alex...Their kids if your going to have em on the roster let em play and figure out mlb pitchers so they can progress quicker and better. JP mentioned in the article if he makes the club he's going to be playing.....Im hoping thats not in a platoon role

JP never said Gross had made the opening day roster. He said that Gabe Gross has worked himself back into the mix for an Opening Day roster slot. He's basically put himself on the radar.

There have been a couple of interesting notes that the media or fans here haven't discussed yet:

- Hinske said his confidence is at a all-time and he's ready to have a big season, but judging from ST that doesn't look too good. His BA is an awfully low .185. He's 2nd on the team in AB's (27) yet he only has one extra base hit (a HR).

- Wells has also predicted big things this season. His BA right now sits at .115. He's slugging at a .192 clip.

I'm not worried about Wells but I am about Hinske. He seems like a good person but his rookie season is looking more and more like a fluke. I'm more inclinde to believe last years Hinske, where he said he was in the best shape of life and injury free, is the true measure of his abilities rather than his rookie campaign.
I doubt JP will release him because he's owed a wack of cash, but I wouldn't be suprised if he's shoping him around right now.

These congressional hearings are actually really quite interesting. It appears that the new testing policy is not nearly as strict as we all thought. Apparently, mlb refused to even send the text of the CBA to the hearings, who had to subpoena it. And that text says that players will *not* automatically be named or suspended for a first offence. And there are technical flaws in the testing procedure itself.

Many of the less boring congresspeople are ripping into it. The players sound very surprised that the agreement is not as publicised (automatic name & suspension on first offence, etc). The panel where Selig et al testify is going to be really fun.

Also, Canseco trying to defend his outrageous book while simultaneously changing his position twice a minute, and McGwire refusing to answer any questions about "the past", is entertaining in its own way.

I know that many people think that Congress should butt out, but some important things seem to have been exposed.

the good thing about droping Koch is it opens up a possible roster spot for NFH

NFH is already on our Roster, we're very happy with his performance, and I will take the opportunity at this time to categorically deny that the Blue Jays, or any other organization, have talked to us about him. We hope that NFH retires as a Bauxite.

R Billie - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 06:07 PM EST (#106532) #
Two or three days ago, Hinske was hitting over .300. As was Rios. Let's not get carried away over a few days of slow performance. We won't really know until May or June whether Hinske is rebounding from his slide.
Thomas - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 06:33 PM EST (#106534) #
Does that leave anyone out? Is Justin Miller out of options, or Ryan Glynn?

I didn't check, but I believe Miller is. Glynn, I don't know, but I wouldn't be suprised at all if he is.

Too bad there's not a good site for keeping track of options.

Craig B - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 06:42 PM EST (#106536) #
Yeah, Thomas. We need a site that keeps track of all this stuff (service time, options, etc.). You could automate it... it wouldn't be that hard to keep track of years where players were optioned.

Kevin... now that I've read the thread, thanks SO MUCH for the terrific updates and pictures. Phenomenal work as always, and I got a huge smile from hearing that Alex Rios has tummy fat. Heh... now he's a real ballplayer.

Interesting about Koch. I thought he had signed a guaranteed contract, but is this something to do with the loophole about newly signed FAs having their contracts not guaranteed, save 30 days pay or something, until the season starts?

I think this is a fair question and deserves to be answered in view of the poverty claimed by management at the time of the signing. I can't imagine the 900K was garuanteed but if it was, this move is open for criticism. If the money is payable then surely the team would have done their due diligence prior to signing.

It was either Mike or Craig who thoughfully suggested last week that the team could consider sending him down to AAA to work things out or get out from under the contract by having him claimed. It looks like Koch probably had a clause in his major league deal barring such a move. There should be more to this story. Hopefully SF can crack it.

Ryan01 - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 10:45 PM EST (#106555) #

Any time you spend less than a million dollars on a major league free agent you can't be expecting that much from them. They signed him knowing full well that there was a good chance he wouldn't be useful. He was signed because of the moderate chance that he could return to his old form and become extremely useful. It didn't happen. For a little perspective, he fell in between Valerio De Los Santos and Tanyon Sturtze on the payscale.

It looks like Koch probably had a clause in his major league deal barring such a move

It's not a clause in his contract exactly, it's in the CBA. Any player with 3 or more full seasons in the majors can refuse assignment to the minors. In that case, the player becomes a free agent and the team is still on the hook for the contract. That's no different from the situation they're in now.

Craig B - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 11:11 PM EST (#106557) #
Ryan is right about the CBA. Often, players who are struggling are happy to go to the minors to work out their difficulties. Not always.

I find this odd, becaue Koch just finished signing with Toronto. It makes me wonder what's happened to sour him on the Blue Jays - if anything - or if it's just Koch being Koch.
Lefty - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 11:16 PM EST (#106559) #
It's not a clause in his contract exactly, it's in the CBA. Any player with 3 or more full seasons in the majors can refuse assignment to the minors.

Ofcourse you are right. A little braincramp on my part. But the assertion that he could be useful and revert back to old form is perhaps being to kind.

There was two seasons of evidence that this was extremely unlikely. I think thats why the signing was fairly roundly questioned by the posters on this board. Though I admit I think I was pretty silent on it choosing to wish for it to work out. Also to be fair to management, when the press releases came out management was clear the Billy was not signed to be the closer, suggesting some merit to your thoughts Ryan. However, 900 grand is not chump change in a $50 million budget. Thats a pretty expensive gamble on a player that didn't even make it to the end of spring training. As it turns out it was obviously a longshot.

Lefty - Thursday, March 17 2005 @ 11:36 PM EST (#106565) #

Not to boast or anything, I made a comment a week or so ago that suggested something was up. I smelled something fishy at the start of spring training just after pitchers and catchers reported. There was an article and I think it was in The Sun, that talked about who was getting the time with the coaches and getting to pitch off the mounds. Koch was at still the end of the line after a couple days. He said something along the effect that he would just go behind the shed and pitch alone to get his work in. At that time I thought, whats up with this? Is there a communications problem between the player and coaches. Was Koch feeling neglected?

If one reviewed the ensuing press I think it is pretty obvious that the coaches were not happy with him. There was no cover up or supportive comments we are acoustomed too from the team such as: "We're happy with where Billy's at right now. He got his work in and thats what matters" Instead he was allowed to swing all by himself after the poor performances.
