No TV, no radio from either side today, but those of you with Gameday can listen to a Toronto-helmed webcast. Well, you can if they play.

In the end, a good decision... he just didn't have it anymore...
Most of his stuff was in the 89-91 mph range and did not fool anyone.
It did sound as though he was struggling. I'm keeping my fingers crossed.
Wishing Tom Cheek all the best...
I was able to meet up with our friends Alexis Rios, Guillermo Quiroz, Brandon League, Francisco Rosario and a few others. The guys got to go home early, and the first stretch tomorrow isn't until 3 pm because they have a night game. So we have some time to kill. We're going to hit the mall with a couple of the guys and then a restaurant or two and kick back tonight. It's St. Patrick's day ya know.
Francisco Rosario said he's heading into St. Pete for tomorrow night's game and expects to pitch. He's excited for the opportunity to pitch at the Major League level - and doesn't care how he is used so long as he make it there. He continued by saying he's never been to SkyDome, but heard it is massive.
Brandon League loves throwing to Q - Guillermo Quiroz - he loves the big target and his calming demeanor. This year is the first time he really got to throw to him. He also is very excited about the opportunity to pitch at the Major League level for the Jays. I gave him pictures from his Major League debut at Yankee Stadium that I took and a couple of DVDs of the game that I made. We talked about how pumped up he was - and how he felt warming up and ultimately getting to pitch on that mound in New York.
Alexis Rios said he was supposed to be playing right field today. He is "all better" and ready to "do it all". He said he put on 15 pounds of muscle over the winter by lifting weights and eating healthy. He said (as he lifted his shirt) "I even have fat on my belly! - HaHa!" He feels strong, and now that he knows his way around at the Major League level, he can concentrate on baseball 100%.
There were only about 100 of us at the park today, but I was able to buy a green Jays cap, with shamrocks on it before they all sold out. The Jays were supposed to wear green uniforms today and then they were to be auctioned afterwards - but that got scrapped. Too bad.
I was able to grab a Lebatts before we left, so hooray for that!
Guys, it's Mark McGwire. Even fallen heroes deserve to have their name spelled correctly.
If the Jays have to swallow his contract, Mr. Rogers can't be too pleased $900,000 just went into the crapper.
As far as Koch is concerned: it's clear to me by now that he isn't going to get any better. When he's throwing hard he can go to his slider, but when he's throwing soft he can't. he is going to get lit up wherever he ends up playing, and that includes AAA unfortunately. With the plethora (I love "The Three Amigos") of young arms in the system, keeping him around accomplishes nothing except taking up space. This is addition by subtraction.
Here's hoping for the best.
Sweat, I'm no fan of rain outs either, but I don't think you have to look much further than Tom Cheek's situation to find an example of something worse.
Also, some guy travelled 5300 miles from Saskatchewan for today's game - his only shot at seeing the Jays - boy was he ticked.
But on mlb.com the jays site has an artice , where JP mentions that Gabe has earned himself a spot on the roster when the team heads north...He mentioned how they are going to see how the next few weeks pan out , but as now "Babe" has put himself on their radar screen...Looks Like he may start the year as the teams Left Fielder....What does that mean for everybody else
With lots of off days in April, you can always use Towers or Chacin in the pen if they won't be starting for some time.
Does that leave anyone out? Is Justin Miller out of options, or Ryan Glynn?
There have been a couple of interesting notes that the media or fans here haven't discussed yet:
- Hinske said his confidence is at a all-time and he's ready to have a big season, but judging from ST that doesn't look too good. His BA is an awfully low .185. He's 2nd on the team in AB's (27) yet he only has one extra base hit (a HR).
- Wells has also predicted big things this season. His BA right now sits at .115. He's slugging at a .192 clip.
I'm not worried about Wells but I am about Hinske. He seems like a good person but his rookie season is looking more and more like a fluke. I'm more inclinde to believe last years Hinske, where he said he was in the best shape of life and injury free, is the true measure of his abilities rather than his rookie campaign.
I doubt JP will release him because he's owed a wack of cash, but I wouldn't be suprised if he's shoping him around right now.
Many of the less boring congresspeople are ripping into it. The players sound very surprised that the agreement is not as publicised (automatic name & suspension on first offence, etc). The panel where Selig et al testify is going to be really fun.
Also, Canseco trying to defend his outrageous book while simultaneously changing his position twice a minute, and McGwire refusing to answer any questions about "the past", is entertaining in its own way.
I know that many people think that Congress should butt out, but some important things seem to have been exposed.
NFH is already on our Roster, we're very happy with his performance, and I will take the opportunity at this time to categorically deny that the Blue Jays, or any other organization, have talked to us about him. We hope that NFH retires as a Bauxite.
I didn't check, but I believe Miller is. Glynn, I don't know, but I wouldn't be suprised at all if he is.
Too bad there's not a good site for keeping track of options.
Kevin... now that I've read the thread, thanks SO MUCH for the terrific updates and pictures. Phenomenal work as always, and I got a huge smile from hearing that Alex Rios has tummy fat. Heh... now he's a real ballplayer.
Congratulations, NFH. When do we see the new-and-improved updated Roster/Cabal, by the way? I'm not entirely sure who's on it at present.
I think this is a fair question and deserves to be answered in view of the poverty claimed by management at the time of the signing. I can't imagine the 900K was garuanteed but if it was, this move is open for criticism. If the money is payable then surely the team would have done their due diligence prior to signing.
It was either Mike or Craig who thoughfully suggested last week that the team could consider sending him down to AAA to work things out or get out from under the contract by having him claimed. It looks like Koch probably had a clause in his major league deal barring such a move. There should be more to this story. Hopefully SF can crack it.
Any time you spend less than a million dollars on a major league free agent you can't be expecting that much from them. They signed him knowing full well that there was a good chance he wouldn't be useful. He was signed because of the moderate chance that he could return to his old form and become extremely useful. It didn't happen. For a little perspective, he fell in between Valerio De Los Santos and Tanyon Sturtze on the payscale.

It's not a clause in his contract exactly, it's in the CBA. Any player with 3 or more full seasons in the majors can refuse assignment to the minors. In that case, the player becomes a free agent and the team is still on the hook for the contract. That's no different from the situation they're in now.
I find this odd, becaue Koch just finished signing with Toronto. It makes me wonder what's happened to sour him on the Blue Jays - if anything - or if it's just Koch being Koch.
Ofcourse you are right. A little braincramp on my part. But the assertion that he could be useful and revert back to old form is perhaps being to kind.
There was two seasons of evidence that this was extremely unlikely. I think thats why the signing was fairly roundly questioned by the posters on this board. Though I admit I think I was pretty silent on it choosing to wish for it to work out. Also to be fair to management, when the press releases came out management was clear the Billy was not signed to be the closer, suggesting some merit to your thoughts Ryan. However, 900 grand is not chump change in a $50 million budget. Thats a pretty expensive gamble on a player that didn't even make it to the end of spring training. As it turns out it was obviously a longshot.
Not to boast or anything, I made a comment a week or so ago that suggested something was up. I smelled something fishy at the start of spring training just after pitchers and catchers reported. There was an article and I think it was in The Sun, that talked about who was getting the time with the coaches and getting to pitch off the mounds. Koch was at still the end of the line after a couple days. He said something along the effect that he would just go behind the shed and pitch alone to get his work in. At that time I thought, whats up with this? Is there a communications problem between the player and coaches. Was Koch feeling neglected?
If one reviewed the ensuing press I think it is pretty obvious that the coaches were not happy with him. There was no cover up or supportive comments we are acoustomed too from the team such as: "We're happy with where Billy's at right now. He got his work in and thats what matters" Instead he was allowed to swing all by himself after the poor performances.
