Maybe I've just never followed Spring Training this closely before -- do the Jays always play the Twins every other day? Are the two teams getting tired of each other?

Lucky for us, this game is also on Rogers Sportsnet this afternoon, with coverage starting at 1:00. Let's hope it's less like the last televised game and more like yesterday.

I have no idea of who is covering this, but I suspect it'll be the Minnesota feed. Rest assured, I will have a critique of it.

Morning:

I have no cable or satellite and haven't found any internet radio broadcasts.

Any help you can give me with the game today, would be much appreciated.

No prob BB.

Eric Hinske: Clean up hitter. (shudder)
O well, at least he got a hit.

I don't like the sounds of Koskie sitting out due to stiffness in his back.
Hit and run, cool.

It's interesting watching these spring training games with the homer announcers.

On Carlos Silva: "He had 1 complete game shutout last year and should have another 20 or 30 in his career."

Again on Silva: "He very well could join fellow countryman Santana and be a 20-game winner."

This is the same Silva who struck out 76 men in 203 innings last year.

I always wonder if these guys really believe what they're saying or if part of their job description is to come across as undyingly optimistic (it being easier to sell soap that way).

Why Thank You Chrisitan. Yeah I'm a bit suprised myself. However I've had this name since back when Halladay first won 19 games in 2002. I just hope Halladay's shoulder hasn't gotten the best of him. It would suck to see a player with such raw talent to be put to waste. Personally I blame Tosca to doing this to Halladay.

He doesn't follow through with his back leg! got to be bad for his arm

A sobering thought or two.

Other than Koskie and Rios none of the "regulars" are doing squat. We're winning with Gross, McDonald, Quiroz and Tablado carrying the load.

On the pirching side; Halladay is far from ready and Lily hasn't thrown. Bush, Chacin and Towers our one, two, three?

We've got a great spring record but unerneath the wins there is some serious ugly!
westcoast dude - Saturday, March 12 2005 @ 03:33 PM EST (#105938) #
The Jays overspent on mediocre offensive talent while better position players at, say, first base, languish.
Could that be it? Regardless, our pitching is so much better than last year at this time that anything is possible, even a Miracle Year.
rtcaino - Saturday, March 12 2005 @ 03:35 PM EST (#105939) #
I dunno when it happened. He didn't get into specifics.

Jays Talk though. He might get more into it.

I wanna call in. I'm just too nervous.

From the mouth of Wilner:

Gross won't ceck lineup out of spring. But will conribute to Major League lineup at some point this season.

Lightenberg may start season on DL.
His gut feeling is Kotch will not make the team. No walks; but 4 runs on 6 hits.
Thinks Chulk and Walker will round out the bullpen.

rtcaino - Saturday, March 12 2005 @ 03:47 PM EST (#105941) #
From the mouth of Wilner:

Says members of media are writting kinder stories about Jays and J.P. I.E. Griffen.
But admitts J.P. has been taking alot of heat. Looks forward to seeing what J.P. will do with some cash.

Did anybody else watching think Francisco Lirano has the wierdest motion ever?

I was just really pleased to see him. On the final weekend of the season, I was talking to a Dodgers scout and he just raved and raved about Liriano. Thought he was the best minor league pitcher he saw all year. Which is surely a bit much, but it certainly piqued my interest.

Yeah, it's almost as if the players need some period of training and strengthening prior to the regular season.

Hopefully the heated clubhouse exchange doesn't become a big distraction.

IMO it doesn't make any sense as to why Chacin will make the club but Gross won't.

I understand the Jays already have 4 OF's but for a team that lacks punch, I want to see if Gross can carry his hot bat into the regular season.

I know it's just ST but I'm a little worried about Doc.

.... and on that note ST is way too long, let's start playing for keeps!!!
VBF - Saturday, March 12 2005 @ 04:58 PM EST (#105946) #
IMO it doesn't make any sense as to why Chacin will make the club but Gross won't.

Certainly, based on performance, Gross deserves to make the club more than Chacin. Unfortunately, it's not about their skill. Batista is going to the bullpen and with Lily, Halladay, Bush, and Towers there's still one more spot, and unless J.P. brings in s starter in the next month, there is no other option than Chacin. Nobody else is ready to make the move, and nobody can come from the pen, that could be potentially better than Chacin.

Gross is fighting for a position that is already taken. Johnson, Catalanotto, Hinske, and Hillenbrand will all make the club because they're here for their own reason. Gross doesn't fit into the DH/1st/LF group because there simply isn't room. Putting him on the roster would only be replicating to what the Jays did to Simon Pond. He's had very good Spring Training, and if he doesn't have anything to prove, SkyChief fans will have a fun couple of months until he's moved up. IMO, one of Hinske, Hillenbrand, Catalanotto, and Johnson will be moved by the deadline, making room for Gross. Surely 2-3 months of AAA won't hurt anything.

Chuck - Saturday, March 12 2005 @ 05:04 PM EST (#105947) #
Surely 2-3 months of AAA won't hurt anything.

And it may not even be that long. Gross is likely the first call-up once Koskie or Catalanotto gets injured (or any corner IF or OF for that matter).

That said, I think an awfully big fuss is being made over a very small sampling of AB and IP thus far this spring.

Ron - Saturday, March 12 2005 @ 06:34 PM EST (#105948) #

I don't understand why JP had a change of heart on who the closer was going to be. Why didn't he just name Batista the closer at the beginning of camp? I know JP has been asked why Batista is now the closer and he basically said it makes the bullpen stronger. I don't understand why he would make a change unless it was based on ST performance or a trade is in the works.

I'm feeling nervous with a 4/5 of Chacin/Towers and a closer that has trouble finding the strike zone and is known as a guy that takes a inning or two before he can get into a groove.

best400 - Saturday, March 12 2005 @ 08:25 PM EST (#105952) #
i think the advance development of Chacin made JP figure he had a a more solid rotation then he had before. Thus he could sacrifice Batista to help what was a suspect bullpen
mistermike - Saturday, March 12 2005 @ 09:02 PM EST (#105955) #
Nobody else is ready to make the move, and nobody can come from the pen, that could be potentially better than Chacin.

I don't understand why they've seemingly given up on Justin Miller. I've always thought he'd is/will be a solid #4-5 starter and could make a reasonable career of that. I'd hate to see them lose him, especially given that three of their starters (Bush, Chacin and Towers) are not exactly battle-tested.

I picked up my copy of SI this afternoon.

I just finished reading Verducci's excellent article.

As a little teaser I'll type the headers for each day he was in camp:

Day 1: Beware of Fecal Matter
Day 2: Of Maxim and Meat Leaf
Day 3: Help from a Higher Power
Day 4: O-Dog, Cat, V-Dub, Plus Two
Day 5: One Shot to Summon the Splendor

The article unveils Oreo Row at Web Gem Way. This will all make sense once you read it.
VBF - Saturday, March 12 2005 @ 11:03 PM EST (#105960) #
I don't understand why he would make a change unless...a trade is in the works.

IMO, you've just answered your own question. Timing sure is odd though.

I don't understand why they've seemingly given up on Justin Miller

Justin's trial was last September. He had a magnificent outing in Anaheim but that was about it. If it were between Chacin and Miller, I'd take Chacin. And, who knows, if Justin's good in the pen, he could be in ther rotation. Between Towers and Chacin, I think one of them will find themselves in AAA by May.

I went to the Chapters at Square One and the guy there told me they would recieve the new SI by Wednesday morning. On a side note, Vernon Wells made front cover appearances on 3 non SI magazines as well.

Keith Talent - Sunday, March 13 2005 @ 12:04 AM EST (#105964) #

Vernon Wells made front cover appearances on 3 non SI magazines as well.

Be wary, those baseball magazines definitely regionalize their covers. They always have a Blue Jays player on the cover for Canada. I was surprised to see through my recent trek through the States that even "Sports Weekly" (formerly "Baseball Weekly") regionalizes its covers. This week, in Georgia, Furcal and Giles are on the cover; while in Pennsylvania, Nomar is on the cover. I thought they were different issues, I had to look carefully. That's what is so special about the SI cover, it's that way all over the world (except when they do those "Canada" editions, do they still do those I wonder?)
