Sorry. Drives me nuts.
Wooten looks at a ball off the plate. Grounds out, pitcher to first to end the inning. Middle of the 1st, 2-0 Red Sox.
Was his home run a 3-run shot?
Gross may still start the season in Syracuse and soon he'll come up again, likely 2 months. In that time, he can trade one of Hinkske, Hillenbrand or Cat and bring in a solid #3 or good #2 starting pitcher. That pitcher would displace either Towers or Chacin.
What inning are we in...I am trying to catch up on the missed action.
Yeah, if you trade all three and pay their salaries as well.
Well maybe JP can make room for Gross with a trade and still get a good piece back. I am however hoping that both Towers and Chacin are able to hold their own in the rotation. It is pretty clear what Towers will give us, but I hope that Chacin will open a lot of eyes.
And I agree with Pistol, not much we could get for either of them... unless they all hot .320 and have 20 home runs...
Yea I know but I was saying when they come up again the announcer might go ...."Wells is 1-2 today and singled his last AB."
I mean if they say what the hitter did the previous inning mention it. I am trying to keep boxscore
Thanks man
I meant the Jays would take a run at Burnett before JULY 31 not June 30th! (I'm thinking corporate tax deadlines as I sit here at work at my lovely accounting firm!)
That would be great, but I doubt it. The Marlins figure to be a serious playoff contender this year. They have a potent batting lineup. Their weakness is probably pitching. I doubt they'd move Burnett unless they get a similar pitcher in return (Lilly).
it sounds interesting...
thanks for making my mundane friday afternoon at work entertaining...
it sounds interesting...
I'd probably stick with Lilly because he's got a year left on his contract. Unless Burnett were the agree to a three year deal with the Jays as part of it. Then I'd consider it.
All highly unlikely however. Mere speculation at this point. Just saying that I doubt the Marlins would move a solid starting pitcher unless they got another in return. They're more likely to move a bat for a pitcher.
I really would like to reiterate how grateful I am for what you are doing here for the spring training season so far. It's a great help to get "play by play" from you while stuck out here in New York City. Your time and effort is greatly appreciated bro.
Now, as far as the game... really great to see Kerry have a good inning of work right there. Hopefully he can make a somewhat successful recovery from what is considered a serious hip condition. I'm pulling for him.
Hyzdu golfs it into short right and its grabbed for the out that ends the inning. Middle of the 5th still tied, 3-3.
Negron takes strike 2 called outside corner. SWing and a miss for the strikeout.
Vazquez grounds out weakly to second.
John McDonald slams one into the trees beyond the left field fence for a HR. 5-3 Jays!
(VGeras: note: Pond singled to right back in the third)
Repeat after me: It is only spring training
On the other hand he is a good pick up defensively. I think Adams is going to show us a lot of what we saw yesterday, great range and hands but lousy throws. He will be lucky to stay under 30 errors. McDonald will be some welcome stability late in ballgames.
Negron grounds one over third and down the left field line and just beats Hyzdu's throw into second for a double.
I am assuming Tablado will play short for New Hampshire next year as they have Cosby back now from last year's injury at third.
Broken bat roller fielded by Tablado, now at third, whose throw is offline. Matos has to come off the bag to field it. Infield single as Ramirez moves to third.
Bladdergroin
Classic, Kevin. That's Ian Bladergroen, the Mets' hotshot prospect who was sent to the Sox in the Mientkiewicz deal last season.
Thanks, again, for the wonderful updates.
The Jays cut three of their young arms last night (Thursday): Dustin McGowan was optioned to Syracuse (Triple-A), while David Purcey and Zach Jackson were re-assigned to minor-league camp.
Unless the Jays have some funny ideas, McGowan will not pitch for Syracuse in April. The Jays optioned McGowan to AAA like this in 2004, and he went to New Hampshire to start the year.
Why did they option McGowan to Syracuse (this year and last year) when they have no intention of playing him there? Couldn't they option him to New Hampshire or Dunedin?

That leaves you with 10, and 2 bullpen slots left. The 3 guys that are "in contention" appear to be League, Chulk, and Koch. It appears, from what JP has said, that League will start the season with the big club as a reliever. If that's true, then you have 11. So then it comes down to Chulk and Koch for the 12th slot.
Any thoughts on who whould get the job? Chulk or Koch...
I'd like to think Chulk would get the nod before Koch, considering Chulk has pitched well, and Koch...well he's pitched.
I was hoping that Koch would rediscover his fastball, but as the 92 MPH reading on the YES bug on Thursday night revealed, Billy the Kid has no bullets left in his gun.
For what it's worth, I believe League was also hitting around 92.
Sounds like Speier is disappointed, but not frustrated. Which is natural, I don't think this is something that will effect the team in a bad way at all.
Otherwise, the Jays today played a very good game with good relief pitching & timely hitting.
Also referred to Downs or Walker as being possible for the swing spot. No mention of Miller. But Blair doesn't necessarily know everything.
That's good to hear, but after the insistence on keeping Berg on the club last year seeing is believing for me.
Parity reigns.
http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/columns/story?columnist=stark_jayson&id=2010302
We need a balanced schedule that gives us a chance to play the other teams more, something that's more fair," says Blue Jays GM J.P. Ricciardi. "Right now, we have to play those two teams 38 times. Because of that, our kids are not afraid to go play in Yankee Stadium or Fenway Park. And that's good. We just wish we didn't have to go as much."
Even though Stark presents some pretty good evidence of parity, I still think the current CBA is a joke. When they were discussing the luxury tax a few years ago I thought it would be something like a dollar for dollar tax at a 75 mil threshold.
The Jays at a 50-53 mil payroll have virtually no hope of topping the Yanks or the Red Sox over the course of a 162 game schedule. No sport has a big of a gap of payrolls (Yanks and D-Rays) between the top and bottom team.
I remember reading comments from the Pirates owner saying he's going to be more vocal about the next CBA. I wonder if any of the owners will push for a hard or soft cap.
Guys I'm a mite concerned about: Ligtenberg, Koch, Hinske
I just can't erase the memory of all those Hinske strikeouts, popups, and groundouts (followed by cursing and bat-slamming, which, frankly is painful to watch).
And Ligtenberg implosions.
And Koch grooved fastballs.
Sorry to nit pick, but are we forgetting the great Alfredo Griffin, first base coach for the Anaheim Angels?
The Jays have virtually no hope of making the playoffs in any division, except maybe the AL Central.
The Jays problem is simply that they're not a very good ballclub. Until last year the Red Sox had always been a slightly above average team who had a good record because they got to play 53 games a year against below-average Oriole, Devil Ray, and Blue Jays team. Most years there were at least 3 teams in the AL West who as good if not better than the Red Sox.
While baseball still has a Yankees problem, it's a pretty balanced sport right now. There are at least 15 teams at the start of the year that have a legitimate shot at winning it all, which isn't really any different than any other sport.
According to Rogers Communications' quarterly financial statements, it seems that revenue sharing payments are received throughout the year. For each of the last two quarters (the first two in which the Blue Jays were treated on a consolidated basis with RCI), you see a statement like this:
During the three months ended December 31, 2004, the Blue Jays generated revenue of $19.8 million primarily related to baseball revenue, which comprises home game and concession revenue, and revenue generated from Major League Baseball’s revenue sharing agreement whereby funds are distributed to and from clubs based on the clubs’ respective revenues.
So clearly they're receiving payments throughout the year. What we don't know, is how the revenue sharing payments track - but according to the CBA, teams actually make estimates throughout the year, and quarterly payments are made on that basis (and there's penalties for misrepresenting your estimates). They do a square-up for the year's results on December 1, and then the following year, in March, everyone's audited financials are due and they make a final adjustment. So what we do know is that no one will have their 2004 financials ready to do final 2004 revenue sharing calculations for a little while yet (probably). Last year, the full-year revenue sharing numbers were leaked in May - we'll hope for the same this year, and hope that the Toronto numbers get leaked this time too!
Just to make everything clear, teams share a pool of 34% of each team's local revenue, which is then split evenly among all the teams. There are accountants in place to make sure that each team doesn't hide revenue, but it doesn't appear to work very well, and some insiders come straight out and admit that that's the case. In some cases, the amount of "hidden" revenue is small, and in others it appears to be quite sizable, though I don't know of any cases where it seems to be getting worse.
This is distinct from the luxury tax, which doesn't get distributed to teams, but gets spent by MLB on other purposes.
There's also a currency equalization payment the Jays once got, but I don't know if they'll even get that this/last year. If I remember correctly, this was paid out of the Commissioner's Discretionary Fund, which is a kitty, or slush fund, of $10 million a year of revenue sharing money. It's put under Bud Selig's control that he can spend on basically whoever he thinks needs a cash infusion (teams have to make a request).
I remember last season with the exception of one game, everygame vs. the Yanks and Red Sox was televised by TSN or SN.
