Aquilino Lopez, who arrived to such fanfare in the spring of 2003 as a brilliant Rule 5 Draft selection, left the organization entirely without fanfare over the winter to join the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Lopez, and his unholy slider, was a great favourite of the Bauxites during 2003, and his precipitate departure for Syracuse early in 2004 was received with a lot of sadness.

Please share your memories of Aquilino Lopez in this thread.

It's a great mystery to me how a pitcher can come in and be so effective one year, and then lose favour so quickly as to be jetisoned from an organization by the end of the next.

I suppose there's never just one answer. But it does seem to be a hallmark of this moody administration to fall in and out of love with pitchers like a teenage girl — Scott Eyre, Cliff Politte, Lopez, Hendrickson, I'm sure there were others.

Best of luck to Lopez in his new, hopefully more permanent home.

Falling in and out of love seems to be a feature of all teenagers. Anyways, I wouldn't cast any blame on the Jay administration for Aquilino's troubles; I'll leave the discussion of that for a more appropriate thread.

Lopez was a fine pitcher in 2003. Something happened in the off-season before the 2004 season, which impaired his effectiveness both in the majors and in triple A. Whatever the reason for that was, I hope Aquilino is well, and that he regains his form.

My best memory of Aquilino was an interview he did in PlayBall!. While most rookies would spend their first paycheck on a sports car or SUV, he went back home and bought some cows for his mother.
