Three days into Spring Training and already there's a rematch against Koskie's old team. How will the Fightin' Jays fare this time around?

The pitching matchup should be a good one, at least for the first two innings -- according to Saturday's Globe and Mail, we'll be seeing the mighty Roy Halladay up against the equally mighty Johan Santana.

So, will Cy '03 be back in his '03 form as he takes on Cy '04?

Yesterday's game was unexpectedly carried on The Fan 590; I didn't have a radio with me and missed it. I will not be making that mistake again today.

will the game be carried on the fan today?
Andrew K - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 12:43 PM EST (#104756) #
I think it must be, because mlb.com gameday audio is carrying it, and claims that it is getting fan feed.

I don't know whether internet broadcast of the fan might be blacked out though.

Yesterday, I broke down and bought MLB game audio for the year. I don't have buyer's regret though, US$15 is a decent deal for not having to hunt for non-blacked out affiliates all year.

I'm listening to the pre-game on the Fan right now.

I have gameday audio, because it came free with mlb.tv when I bought that for the season. The only thing is, their feed is only about 12kb/s whereas the fan website has a better-quality feed at 20kb/s. It's a shame that nobody has a genuinely high-quality audio stream -- I find those ringing compression artefacts quite distracting.

I did something similar -- I have StarChoice at home for TV, and they also offer a pile of digital radio channels for very little money, so I ponied up the three bucks so I could hear the Jays radio broadcasts sounding way better than AM radio, coming out of my insane stereo.

It sounds remarkably good, though you can hear the difference in source materials between the in-studio stuff and the roving reporter interviews. None of it sounds "bad", they just sound distinctively different from each other.

I just think this has to be posted somewhere - stumbled across it at Rotoworld under Bobby Higginson's name...

In an effort to win the left-field job, Bobby Higginson is going to go to the plate ''hacking.''
''There's only one Oakland A's team out there that really cares about on-base percentage,'' Higginson said. ''It looks better if you're hitting .300 and getting on base .320, than if you're hitting .260 and getting on base .360.'' Not exactly the greatest endorsement for the Tigers' braintrust."

How awful is that?
smarch - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 01:31 PM EST (#104772) #
hey Andrew K, I was thinking of purchasing mlb tv. Any endorsement ? Did you purchase it last year. So many games over the internet, I am intrigued...

Andrew, thanks for the info (20 kb/s vs. 12 kb/s). I'd noticed the fan590.com feed seemed better, but didn't know why. The main downside of fan590 is it makes me re-confirm every hour I'm still listening; not too convenient if I'm resting comfortably on the other side of the room. (Also, to even see it's asking to me to re-confirm, I have to disable the pop-up blocker for the fan590 site; yesterday it just went out on me before I realized what happened.)

Smarch, I had MLB TV when I was living in England last year. When I moved back to British Columbia, Canada I found that ALL OF CANADA is in the Jays Blackout Area, so I dropped it.

Not sure if that is the case this year, BUT check it out before you buy. Unless you're happy with the 10 million other games you can get.
sduguid - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 02:42 PM EST (#104781) #
Yes, it's still true that the blackout is all of Canada. I have tried to point out the absurdity of this in the past, but I always get a form letter back which doesn't address my concerns at all.

Following the MLB.TV talk (this is new to me):

What do you get? Live television of nearly every game? How is the quality? Would Sympatico High Speed be adequate in order to watch these games, or is a higher bandwidth connection needed?

Thanks for any info you could provide.

I'm pretty sure Sympatico would be good for those sorts of things - they streamed last year's ALCS for free and my sympatico carried it nicely.

You get good quality live television feeds of every game, to my knowledge.

Cheek's inability to mention the names of pitchers is getting on my nerves.

He has mentioned the name of the person who is pitching once, if at all, then refers to him as "he", and "the pitcher".

Its really annoying if you are casually listening to the broadcast.
Andrew K - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 03:31 PM EST (#104791) #
Re mlb.tv

Don't buy it for Jays games if you like in Canada, because of the blackout. I've had it for the last year and a half, because it's my only option in the UK. The quality is watchable but not good -- not tv quality. It also seems to vary quite a lot: rebroadcasts of RSN coverage looked quite good, but rebroadcasts of whoever does the Orioles games looked awful. It's a 350kb/s stream, although I expect that they will bump that up a bit when everyone's bandwidth becomes greater. You mostly get the away team broadcast, which is actually quite interesting for balancing ones viewpoint, and the Jays are probably the team with the lowest coverage on it (last year I'd say only about 70% of Jays games were available, as opposed to 100% of Yankees or Red Sox games).

Re Fan590. Why on earth do they do that stupid confirm thing? Don't they understand that people might leave the computer to play their radio, while doing something else? Idiocy.

Re Doc. Jerry said that he didn't pitch badly at all, but that a couple of curveballs didn't break sharply and got hit. Since Doc's curve is his killer pitch, and nobody has theirs sharp at this stage of the year, it's probably best not to judge him at all, yet.

It was great to start listening to Jays Talk--until the people started to call in. When that complaining lady called in, I wanted to throw the remote at the radio.

I don't usually listen to Jays Talk because I feel a bit of an outsider, living on a different continent and all. But I put the internet feed on tonight.

And where Wilner said to that woman who was complaining about Delgado leaving (amongst other things) "would you do a job for 6 million if someone else was offering you 17 million for the same job?" I just had to say "zing!". Nice job.

That lady vomiting her argument over the radio like that was annoying. Our host shot her down but definitely let her go on and on for way too long. It's an old, tired argument fans don't need to keep hearing.

We all know player salaries don't influence ticket prices. I don't understand how anyone can miss that.

It was great to have the game on radio today, but Tom Cheek sounded tired. Called Raul Tablado "Raul Pelado" and then "Raul Tablanado". Also caled the Twins "the Devil Rays". Breaks my heart to hear Tom like this...

In regards to the flowing conversation, I absolutely adore Jays-Talk. Last season when the Jays didn't give us much to cheer for Jays-Talk was the highlight of my night (I'm a sad, sad guy). I love hearing the 5-Tool host work his magic, the more idiots that call in the better! Sure at first when you get "Old Lady Nesbit" calling about the selflessness of the Mick you cringe a bit. You can tell her finger is off the pulse of baseball she's poking another sport in the eye. But you have faith that Wilner will always come through and punish ignorance with the flare of a streetballer. Doesn't matter how you come at him, weather it be the "in my day" attack, the "the yankees win because" technique or the "what the Jays need is.." maneuver Wilner has got so many tools in his bag, he'll slam them down like a coupon at the sizzler. The guy is fried gold, the best of the best.

My apologies for letting this argument go on, but if she at one time had "LEAFS AND JAYS SEASONS TICKETS" does she not know that you can take 10 PEOPLE to one value game for $20. OR get all 81 home games for $162!

The five tool host gives us the props once again. But on that topic, anyone think we'll get a little slack this year since the Jays will own park security?
Useless Tyler - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 04:41 PM EST (#104807) #
Yeah, it's a ridiculous argument.

Though the whole family argument is generally different - it's not just the tickets, but the food, the merchandise the kids want, and all that, which drives the price up.

At the same time, wasn't there a study done a while ago that showed the Jays as one of the cheapest teams for a family to see? I remember something like that in the Star - something like only the Expos and some other chumps being less expensive.
VBF - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 04:44 PM EST (#104808) #
I doubt it. The security will still be there and the Rogers Centre A-Z guide which tells you what you can and cannot bring in/do hasn't changed.

The sad part is that the security is always more wary of the hardcore fans when checking their stuff. They don't care about the Yuppi guy wearing pink flipflops but they'll do a thorough search of me. I've had things confiscated that were completely harmless to anything, unless you are the ears of a Yankee fan.
Useless Tyler - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 04:45 PM EST (#104809) #
The five tool host gives us the props once again. But on that topic, anyone think we'll get a little slack this year since the Jays will own park security?

Absolutely. I remember last season before I discovered the Cheer Club, my friend brought a broom to the stadium when we were 3-0 in a series against I think the White Sox, to do, of course, the traditional sweeping motions over the edge of the seats.

Security confiscated it as an offensive weapon.

But on the plus side, the guy who he then went and appealed to said that there was nothing he could do about it, but that this anti-enthusiasm style of policy was merely a major facet of SportsCo. He suggested that if (and when) Rogers were to buy the stadium, things would be much better and fan friendly.

Hopefully no stupid old security guards yelling that we can only drum in between pitches.

Not to mention an usher one fine day who asked if we could only hang the Ks in between innings. Sigh.

This is why I am absolutely sure to never bring any sort of bag-like searchable appliance to a game. Keep it all in the pockets or in the hands, I say.

VBF - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 04:54 PM EST (#104811) #
LOL Tyler. I took five friends to the Seattle series (the July one) and we all brought brooms. Not only were the confiscated BEFORE we entered the gates, but we had to endure a lecture about it.

The real irony of that game was that my flagpole which I assemble at my seat, extends to about 9 feet (but it shortens to one innocent looking foot when i go through the gate). Carlos had hit a homer to win the game and I was too proud, waving it, to take it down. When we came back to claim out brooms I had a 9 foot pole in my hands.

I had gotten the last laugh.

Unfortunately, I'm unable to enter through gate 2 now. It's the Founders Club entrance for me.

VBF - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 05:10 PM EST (#104815) #
It's a Jays Flag and its HUGE. I used two throughout the season. I had the old logo until July when I updated to the new logo one.

I sat in 522 and 524B for about 15 games last season. I sat all over the place for the other 15 games I went to.

I made three appearances on the JumboTron last year:

- Monday May 24(Victoria Day) during the "We are Toronto" ninth inning stuff. I think you guys and the O-Drum were there because I remember hearing it.

-Wednesday, August 25th vs. Boston

-Wednesday, September 1st, while trying to win me some Klondike bars.

To some, I'm known as the Flagman, to others I'm known as the obvious, Vernon's Biggest Fan.

Whenever Wilner takes phone calls in the post game show, that's pure entertainment and I do my best to tune in.

If the callers were all %100 "intelligent" I would get bored. I love the callers that call in and rant and rave. I remember one guy last year called in when JP was on and he read off a long list of "poor" moves by JP. JP then procedded to explain the logic behind some of the moves but the caller would have none of it. I guess I'm easily amused, but it was very entertaining to listen to.

And I'll make a prediction right now, at some point during the first 2 months of the season a person will call in and suggest a trade like Josh Banks or Miguel Batista for Barry Zito.

Mick,

I was reffering to some older woman who called in to talk to the 5-tool host and started ranting on and on about how she won't pay to go see baseball games because they don't put a show without a high salary like Mantle used to.... kinda hard to follow really.
Magpie - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 05:23 PM EST (#104821) #
Oh my God, the Al Leiter and his blisters argument. This always makes me crazy

For the uninitiated, the Yankees blew out Al Leiters's shoulder on April 14 1989 (he threw 160+ pitches on a cold wet night in the Bronx), and traded him to Toronto three weeks later. The Jays pitched him once and basically shut him down for the rest of the year.

He came back in 1990, and struggled with his control at two minor league levels. And he had some problems with blisters. That one year, in 1990. Not for years and years.

He pitched well in spring 1991, made the team, but he'd hurt his elbow and pulled a Cliff Politte/Chris Carpenter and tried to pitch through it. Young men do dumb things sometimes, especially when they're trying to establish themselves as major leaguers. This was dumb, and it set him back a year.

But the Jays didn't carry him on the roster through all of this out of the kindness of their hearts. If they had exposed him to the Rule 5, he would have been gone in a nano-second. Anyway, in 1992 he put together a healthy year at AAA, got his control together, and was ready to become a ML pitcher. Unfortunately for the Jays, the Yankees had started his ML service clock way back in 1987, and Leiter spent large parts of two seasons (1989 and 1991) on a major-league Disabled List. (In 1990 and 1992, he was pitching in the minors.)

But during this whole period, what did he cost? Next to nothing - the major league-minimum during those times when he was actually on the team, and a spot on the 40 man roster over the winter.

In 1993, he helped win a World Series, which surely ought to count for something. This wasn't Ken Dayley or Mike Sirotka. The Jays, Beeston in particular, smeared him mercilessly when he left because... they had to do something. They'd just screwed up the Roberto Alomar negotiation, Devon White and Paul Molitor were also heading out the FA door, and they needed someone to blame for their troubles.

OK, sorry for the rant. I always stick up for Al Leiter. I liked Leiter the first time I saw him - he brushed back George Bell, and then struck him out. (George being George he went and homered off him in his next at bat.)

Useless Tyler - Sunday, March 06 2005 @ 06:45 PM EST (#104823) #

Thank god for Mike Wilner indeed - I just wish he'd get on the morons a bit more often.

He certainly cut me off quickly which, frankly, was justified - but I mean people who talk about how John Gibbons should be fired because of his body language, or people who complain about how Carlos took an offer twice as high as the one the Jays were offering him, and use it as an excuse to complain about how expensive the games are, should not be given bloody 10 minutes of pointless debate.

But that's just me in a half-rant mode. He plugged battersbox and the cheer club after my call, and criticised skydome security, so I'm satisfied.

With regards to Tom Cheek and his rustiness, I believe I heard on the radio that he has been undergoing chemotherapy during the winter, so understandably, his mind isn't at its sharpest. The terms he is using are a bit odd ("The pitcher.." rather than the pitcher's name, for example), but keep in mind that it's early in spring training, and there are no names on jerseys, just numbers. And they are certainly unfamiliar numbers at that.

Does anyone know if Bubbie Buzachero got invited to big league spring training? Where does he expect to be in 2005? He looks as if he might have a big league call up in 2, 3 years.
Alex Obal - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 12:58 AM EST (#104858) #
Don't think so - Buzachero isn't on the list of non-roster invitees on the Jays' official site. (Does not being "invited" mean that you don't practice with the big leaguers at all, or just that you don't play in any big-league spring training games?)

For 2005, Gerry has him penciled in as the bullpen ace in New Hampshire.

Hey, UT, I missed your call -- what did you ask him? Something about fan noise?

Ah, no huge deal NFH (acronym names are fun). I told him I was in the cheer club, and commented that (since many people had been talking about low attendance) I don't care how many people are in the seats, since it doesn't matter if they're all silent. Then I thusly asked him to advise on how on earth you get a skydome crowd riled up.

Following a short discussion on the season pass and how great a deal it is, he remarked that toronto fans for nearly every single team in this city is incredibly low, even when we're in the playoffs. I didn't get a chance to respond and start a conversation though. At the very least, after being cut off he gave a nice plug for battersbox and for the cheer club, and criticised skydome security for shouting us down during that one yankees series.

And that's the story. Far too long in text for such a minor event.

Just noticed a whack of spring training games added to Sportsnet's sked, including two Jays games.

Thank Rogers for that! I feared a spring training game-less preseason on sportsnet.

So we'll actually get to see a couple of games, and hopefully see (and hear) how good Jamie Campbell is.

With him as announcer, spring training games being televised, AND Richard Griffin being an optimist, everything's coming up Milhouse.

I suspect the spring Jays games will be picked up from American stations, rather than being original Sportsnet productions with Campbell et al.

Well, they had Faulds and Cerutti calling the spring training games last year.

Tyler, how'd you manage to do that with the preview function?
Useless Tyler - Monday, March 07 2005 @ 05:53 PM EST (#105043) #
Here's how.

1. Typed the message without any HTML
2. Pressed preview
3. Realized without italicized quotes it might seem out of place if someone posts a split second beforehand, which often happens
4. Re-typed it with the italics tags and all that jazz
5. Pressed submit comment WITHOUT previewing first
6. Realized halfway through that I had forgotten to change Plain Old Text to Formatted HTML
7. Screamed very loudly, annoying the other people in my school's computer lab

So excuuuuuuuuuuuuse me.

I know. But Jamie Campbell was hosting the news last night. He'd be in Florida by now preparing to call his first game. Also, they haven't even named an analyst. Leading me to speculate that the spring games will be simulcasts.

I figure this is as good a place for my first post, and to say that I'm looking forward to joining you folks at the 518 (if that's still your location) this upcoming season. I picked up a Star Pass today. I wish I had heard about you guys last season, seeing as how the main reason I didn't go to that many games was that the people in my section (field level) were acting like they were at the opera, not a baseball game. You guys bring it, and that's what Toronto needs, loud fans.
