As we learned in today's earlier thread, there's a a way-cool "frivolity" at BBREF that can tell you quickly every player who ever played for any combination of teams (for instance, the 65 men who have been in the service of both the Blue Jays and Expos).

So here it is ... the all-time Jay/Expo All-Star team. Forget Pedro, who was never a Jay, and Dalgado, who was never a 'Spo ... here's your all-time team of players who suited up for BOTH Canadian MLB teams.

(Selections based on career performance, not performance with the either or bothCanadian teams.)

Just one comment:

Bleah.

Seconded. It's a second division club, despite the contributions of Fairly and the Candy Man.

I didn't realize Alex Gonzalez was on the Expos. When did that happen (this offseason? And if so, doesn't that mean he is on the Nationals?))

Alex S. was part of the trade that sent Nomar to the Cubs, and Cabrera to the Red Sox. He finished out last season with the Expos.

What about the Wild Thing?

And the incomporable pinch running abilities of Tom Lawless?
The Law meant so little to him, he thought nothing of stealing on a regular basis

(My first and last joke ever....)

What about Tony Solaita? Here is a guy from the American Somoa that was originally drafted by the Yankees. He stuck around long enough to be one of the few lucky players that can say he played for both the Jays and the Expos in the same year (1979). Tony played first base and did a little DHing while in the American League.

Off topic I guess, but in perusing Baseball-Reference I came across the one Japanese guy to play before the 90s

Masanori Murakami in 64-65
Appeared to be a steady reliever for the Giants
Career ERA+ of 105

Bet there's an interesting story behind that
_Daryn - Monday, January 24 2005 @ 03:01 PM EST (#2719) #
Hmmm
under pitchers that played for both the Yankees and the Mets we have Rick Cerone, with 2 IP's...

sometimes just "data" isn't enough
_Tucker - Monday, January 24 2005 @ 03:02 PM EST (#2720) #
Actually Alex Gonzalez finished up with the Padres and that makes 4 former Blue Jays/Expos ( Mitch Webster, Tony Batista, and Darrin Fletcher) that I can come up with.

Bill Risley...hahaha pitched in '98 for the Jays. I went to see them play at Tiger Stadium one day, I remember he didn't glove his ball in his wind up, like most pitchers do. He gave up a grand slam to Deivi Cruz on his first pitch, and a mammoth solo bomb to a guy named Melvin Nieves on his 3rd. Very interesting

Tucker, the point was guys that played ONLY with Montreal and Toronto, Fletcher began his career with the Dodgers I believe, Batista had a stint in Baltimore, I think Webster played in LA. There are a good number of guys to play for both but not only both.

How about Tommy Hutton coming off the bench for the all-time Jay/Expo team? He would be a valuable addition to a mediocre team like this.

Pretty dead around here today....

Not long till pitchers and catchers report now..

"Masanori Murakami in 64-65

A dandy. Here goes, paraphrasing from the second edition of Total Baseball.

Murakami was one of 3 members on a Japan League team sent over to America to get some experience with the Giants farm teams in Fresno and Magic Valley in '64. He was so good and so popular with his teammates that the Giants promoted him, and he K'd 15 in 15 IP with an ERA of 1.80

Then San Fran declared that they had the right to buy any of the three Japanese who made the big leagues. The Japanese said "no, we just loaned him to you." (or something like that). For good measure, they offered that he was homesick and wanted to go back. Murakami toed the Japanese line.

If that's not enough, Murakami's Japanese team claimed that his Giants contract was a forgery.

Then-comissioner Ford Frick threatened to sever all Japanese-U.S. baseball relations, which could have cut off all American players from going to Japan.

Anyway, they finally reached an agreement saying Murakami would pitch for San Fran in '65, then be free to choose his own destiny.

After the '65 season, he was lured back to Japan by a $40,000 contract, twice what SF offered. In his first two years back in Japan, he won a grand total of nine (count 'em) games.

Fascinating, Jeremy. I hadn't heard that story before.

On the Expos-Jays front, a grande latte from Starbucks goes to the first to name the winning pitcher from the first Pearson Cup in 1978.
_Jeremy - Monday, January 24 2005 @ 11:53 PM EST (#2728) #
I'll lead off with Ross Grimsley
_gv27 - Monday, January 24 2005 @ 11:57 PM EST (#2729) #
Right team, wrong side. Grimsley was a south-paw; this guy was a righty.
_Mick - Tuesday, January 25 2005 @ 12:17 AM EST (#2730) #
Righty Expo in '78? The obvious guess is Steve Rogers.
_gv27 - Tuesday, January 25 2005 @ 12:19 AM EST (#2731) #
Not Mr. Rogers. Final clue: Ontario-born.
_Jeremy - Tuesday, January 25 2005 @ 12:22 AM EST (#2732) #
Chatham-born Bill Atkinson
_gv27 - Tuesday, January 25 2005 @ 12:26 AM EST (#2733) #
A coffee to Jeremy! Can I email it? Atkinson still lives in Chatham; runs a hardware store downtown as far as I know.
_Jeremy - Tuesday, January 25 2005 @ 01:24 AM EST (#2734) #
Much obliged GV, email is fine.
_Mick - Tuesday, January 25 2005 @ 01:31 AM EST (#2735) #
Why wait for e-mail? Post the coffee right here (and you won't even have to use "java-script" ... bahahahahaha). Is Tim Horton's OK?

_Kevin Pataky - Tuesday, January 25 2005 @ 07:44 AM EST (#2736) #
No one remembers Tony Solaita ???
_Hartley - Tuesday, January 25 2005 @ 09:44 PM EST (#2737) #
Tony Solaita he was the first Samaoan to play major league baseball. He died in 1990 at the age of 42 in Samoa.
_Hartley - Tuesday, January 25 2005 @ 09:47 PM EST (#2738) #
Mick this Expo-Blue Jay player is omitted from your list of player to have played for both teams.

Here are clues about this player. He played for both Canadian clubs. He was also a broadcaster for both the Expos and Blue Jays. He is still broadcasting? Who am I ?
