The Batter's Box Trivia Challenge works very simply. A question is asked; the first person to get the correct answer (once the original questioner confirms the correct answer) then gets to ask the next question.

The honour system is in effect. That means NO looking the answer up via any internet sources, and you are asked on your honour to abide by that. The extensive use of skull sweat and old-fashioned paper books, I'll allow.

On to the opening question...

What kind of tree bark did Hall of Fame spitballer Burleigh Grimes chew in order to get his saliva nice and slippery?

Jdog has the correct answer!

So... Jdog gets to ask the next question.

Haha! That was the biggest guess of my life! I assume you are not lying when you say it is correct so with my limited knowledge I will pose the Next Question!

Name the last two MVP's of the world series that were catchers?

Might as well take a shot: is it Pudge and Pat Borders?

Close but no cigar!

Yeah, I just looked it up. Never would've guessed the second half of it.

Sorry for the delay ,

Your question
_Noah - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:54 AM EST (#17928) #
Who is the oldest (in terms of draft year) current Major league player to be drafted first overall?
_Ron - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:02 AM EST (#17929) #
This one should be easy. I think it's Ken Griffey Jr.
_Noah - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:05 AM EST (#17930) #
Im sorry but that is incorrect... you have to get a bit further back then that
_Jobu - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:12 AM EST (#17931) #

Well played Noah.
_Ron - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:12 AM EST (#17932) #
Dammit I thought there wouldn't be anybody older than Junior .... but I just looked up the answer ..... arghhhh

I guess I'm DQ'ed from this question because I needed to know the answer.
_Noah - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:14 AM EST (#17933) #
I hate to do this to the rest of you but I have to get to sleep so i'll have to give up the answer... unless either ron or jobu want to fill in as the 'answer keeper' for me....?

I have also looked it up out of curiousity. I doubt anyone will get it without cheating. And whoever does better explain themselves! ;-)

But yeah, we can confirm it and such.

Alright jobu i sent you the email... best of luck to you all on solving this one :)

There ya go, it will all work out in the end.

Although, seeing the answer I think we should propose some kind of time limit on this so the thread doesnt grind to a halt till morning....
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:22 AM EST (#17938) #
I propose 5 minutes, cause I'm bored and want a new question. :-)

Dammit, I obviously meant "feel pretty stupid." I proofread that twice! I need more sleep.

Frank Thomas was a first round pick, but he was not first overall.

And Yar, the other Dave Roberts was born in 1972.

Uh oh.... I think we just found a hole in the space time continuum.
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:33 AM EST (#17944) #
No to both those guesses. Big Hurt was picked 7th overall, and Glavine was a second rounder.

Ah hell.... no one's gonna get it! First person to give me the correct answer to this scenario gets credit for winning the draft challange.

Runners at second and third, one out and a 3-and-2 count on the batter. The next pitch is strike three. The catcher, thinking this is the third out, flips the ball to the plate umpire and walks away. The umpire catches the ball and rolls it toward the mound while two runners race across the plate. What's the call?

I have absolutely no idea how that's even possible, but I'm guessing the answer lies in one of Jayson Stark's columns. ;)

PS. To clarify: Did he only face 3 batters all year, or what?

Nope this pitcher is a fairly well know pitcher. Had a pretty good year this season and almost pitched 200 innings.

And what he did was mathematically impossible yet he still did it.

It's not Big Unit or Zambrano.

The pitcher isn't an all-star calibre guy. I gotta get some sleep but I'll leave with some more hints:

- Pitches in the NL
- Once pitched for the Rockies
- Is a right-hander
- Fairly big guy at 6'3 220pds

could be a trivia, but not my turn, but that situation reminded me of what was it Lenny Sakata who came in to catch Dennis Martinez and Jays walked, got on base, tried to steal and got picked off.

John Thomson is correct, by the way (good one Fawaz), but since Ron's not around to confirm the correct answer I'm going to restart the challenge.

1. This guy was quite the masher (for that era), but no one seems to know what position he played.

2. I need to polish up on my baseball history... didn't even know there was team named Superbas... wow.

Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 11:36 AM EST (#18006) #
So, what happened to Tim Jordan in 1909 or 1910? Here's a great hitter who started late, and he's out of major league baseball at age 31 with no decline phase. One presumes a serious injury.

Anyways, he was 6'1" and 170 lbs., and he led the majors in homers. There's hope for guys like me yet. At least, younger guys than me.:)
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 11:40 AM EST (#18007) #
Tim Jordan looks a good size in this picture (scroll down).

And it was bad knees that did him in, by the way.
Leigh - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 11:43 AM EST (#18008) #
Here is a question.

When the Moncton Mets (of NB) attended the 1987 Canadian Senior Baseball Championships in Red Deer, AB, there were two future Major Leaguers and one former Major Leaguer on their roster.

The two future Major Leaguers are both still in the Majors, one in the American League and one in the National League. They are the only currently active MLB players from New Brunswick.

The former player is not a Canadian. The former pitcher now makes his home in the Maritimes. Strangely, the two MLB teams that he pitched for are the two teams closest to the Maritimes.

Who are these three players?
_Gwyn - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 11:46 AM EST (#18009) #
Was the former player Bill Lee ?
Leigh - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 11:48 AM EST (#18010) #
Yes, Gwyn.
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 11:51 AM EST (#18011) #
Cool, Craig. He looks more like 6'4", 190 to me. Small arms, strong legs. Funny that a first baseman of that build would run into knee problems so young. Somehow I suspect that he would have done much better in the modern age- I'm thinking about Harold Baines, who had knee problems from his early 30s here. Maybe Steve Treder could do one of his modern version of old ballplayers stories on him for THT. "Tim Jordan" doesn't even require a name change.

By the way, I love the names of the Superba players- Kaiser Wilhelm, Harry Lumley, Jim Pastorius (any relation to Jaco?).
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 11:53 AM EST (#18012) #
Matt Stairs, and hmm, is Rheal Cormier still around? Yeah, I think so.
Leigh - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 11:54 AM EST (#18013) #
That's correct, Mike. I guess you get to ask 2/3 of the next question (Gwyn the other 1/3).
_King Rat - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:03 PM EST (#18014) #
Bill Lee, Rheal Cormier and Matt Stairs?
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:05 PM EST (#18015) #
All right. I have 2 Minnesota Twins questions. Gwyn can ask a third if he thinks these are too easy.

Name the last 3 Twins Rookie of the Year winners.
Name 2 of the 3 leading home-run hitters on the great Twins 65 ballclub.
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:09 PM EST (#18016) #
Funny that a first baseman of that build would run into knee problems so young

Well, there was no such thing as knee surgery in those days, so you played until the pain became too much and then stopped. Now, arthroscopic surgery can clear the junk out of a knee in minutes.
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:11 PM EST (#18017) #
Which does make the task of comparing old ballplayers with modern ones quite challenging.
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:13 PM EST (#18018) #
Hmm... last 3 Twins rookie winners including this year? Or last year?

If it's 2001-2003 I'll guess Juan Rincon, Tony Fiore, and Luis Rivas.

2 of the 3 leading home run hitters on the '65 Twins... I'm going to guess Tony Oliva and Harmon Killebrew
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:14 PM EST (#18019) #
No guesses after 10 minutes, so here's a clue for the ROY winners. You only have to go back to 1979.
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:15 PM EST (#18020) #
65 Twins: Harmon Killebrew and Tony Oliva
ROY ? T Walker, Tony Oliva
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:15 PM EST (#18021) #
Oh, I get it. The last 3 AL ROY winners who were Twins.

John Castino, Kent Hrbek, and ????????
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:16 PM EST (#18022) #
Craig, sorry if my question wasn't clear. I meant winners of the ROY award, who were Minnesota Twins. You get another guess.

Oliva/Killebrew is half right.
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:18 PM EST (#18023) #
Nope and nope. Jabonoso gets another guess, as he didn't see my clue(s).
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:20 PM EST (#18024) #
K Pucket
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:25 PM EST (#18025) #
Well, I'll add some more clues about one of the 65 Twins HR leaders, whose name has not yet been mentioned. He led the league in OPS in 1963 and was third in 1964. His batting average fell in 1965 at age 29, but he retained most of his power. He was a terrific percentage base-stealer, stealing 26 bases and being caught 4 times over a 3 year period.
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:27 PM EST (#18026) #
Jimmy Hall?
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:27 PM EST (#18027) #
Kirby Puckett did not win the ROY. Craig had one of them. Another one of the ROYs played for the Jays in 2000. The third is a well-known great ballplayer.
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:28 PM EST (#18028) #
Jimmie Hall is an excellent guess, but narrowly incorrect.
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:29 PM EST (#18029) #

_G.T. - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:29 PM EST (#18030) #

_G.T. - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:32 PM EST (#18031) #
And on the Cordova thing, might I say just how much I miss the Gord Ash era! :)
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:32 PM EST (#18032) #
Marty Cordova?
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:32 PM EST (#18033) #
Zoilo Versailles was the 65 MVP and hit 19 homers, but was not one of the Twins' 3 leading homer hitters. Good guess though.

GT is correct about Cordova. Craig got Castino. One more, and he's the easiest of the three.
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:36 PM EST (#18034) #
Hey, Coach, can you help out the young-uns with the 65 Twins?
Gleeman might be a good lifeline too.

_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:40 PM EST (#18036) #
i used to follow those Twins very closely, they were my AL team back in those days, but cannot remember well, who played besides Kill, Oliva, Versalles, Hall?

Good, Jabonoso, Craig and GT have combined to get the ROYs- Castino, Knoblauch and Cordova.

For the 65 Twins, we have one of Oliva/Killebrew, the All-Star outfielder I mentioned earlier, and a first baseman who is not so well known.

http://www.baseball-reference.com/teams/MIN/1965.shtml
Jabonoso, if you want the answer, COMN. For others, you can keep playing until 1:00, and then I'll reveal the answer, and let someone else set the trivia question.
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:46 PM EST (#18039) #
One is Killebrew, the others? what about Allison
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:48 PM EST (#18040) #
once we are on the 65 Twins, who were the pitchers: Kaat, Pascual and i just wonder if Jim Perry was already there?
this question is for Mike as he must have a good book at hand...
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:50 PM EST (#18041) #
Wow, Zoilo Versalles had 76 extra-base hits in 1965 and only drove in 77 runs. Leadoff hitters, eh?
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:50 PM EST (#18042) #
i wait for the answer, i like this game...
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:51 PM EST (#18043) #
I'll save Mike the trouble, as I looked up the answer. Jabonoso is correct. Feel free to ask a question...
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:52 PM EST (#18044) #
Jabonoso, Killebrew and Allison (the "who am I" clues answer) are correct. The third is first baseman Don Mincher. Jim Perry was there, and the fourth starter was Mudcat Grant. Al Worthington (who I've never heard of) was the closer.

The trivia question is in your hands, and you may collaborate with Craig and GT.
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 12:59 PM EST (#18045) #
Whose the best Cuban player ever?
He played all 9 positions very well.
It may be contested that there were a couple of pitchers as good as him.

Martin DiHigo?
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:02 PM EST (#18047) #
yes!!!
and he is in the ML hall of fame
_Jabonoso - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:04 PM EST (#18048) #
but he did not played in ML, it was an homage from the negro league inmortals that played with him and wanted him honoured...

My buddy Joel, also of TBG, and I used to draft old timer teams for Hardball 2, and we integrated Negro League players into the draft with approximated stats, including Martin. Speaking of which, if anyone is interested in owning a Diamond Mind Fantasy team, please email me here.

I have to go, so I will pass my questioning rights onto Craig. Have fun guys.
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:08 PM EST (#18050) #
OK, Jim. Thanks!

New question is :

Who is the only Rookie Of The Year winner to win the award while playing for a first-year expansion team?
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:11 PM EST (#18051) #
Alfredo Griffin?
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:14 PM EST (#18052) #
Nope. Griffin won in '79, the Jays' third year.
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:17 PM EST (#18053) #
Oh well... took a shot...
Hmm... it's not Lou Piniella, is it?
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:20 PM EST (#18054) #
And Hamboy has the correct answer! Don't forget to ask a question...
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:28 PM EST (#18055) #
Wow... shot in the dark does work...

Okay... since I don't know any obscure questions... I'll go with something easy...

Who was the first pitcher to win Most Valueable Player award?
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:36 PM EST (#18056) #
Carl Hubbell?
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:38 PM EST (#18057) #
Nope... Carl Hubbell was SECOND pitcher to win that award.
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 01:54 PM EST (#18058) #
I don't know if the Chalmers awards count, and I don't know if Matty won one, but what the hey. How 'bout Christy Mathewson?
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:08 PM EST (#18059) #
Okay... I guess, I didn't clarify the question enough....

First pitcher to win BWAA MPV award, which started 1931.

(Biggest hint just gave out).

And it wasn't Christy Mathewson
_Simon - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:19 PM EST (#18060) #
No frickin idea, but I looked in a book and Lefty Grove was really good back around 1931. Is that the answer?
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:26 PM EST (#18061) #
And Simon gets the correct answer. Lefty Grove did win first BWAA MVP award.

Your turn at question
_Simon - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:40 PM EST (#18062) #
Nice...Okay, here goes.

In 1886, the St Louis Browns won the second-ever "World Series" (though it wasn't officially the World Series before the modern era) over the Chicago White Stockings in the bottom of the tenth inning of the sixth game courtesy of this man's "$15,000 slide". What was his name?
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 02:53 PM EST (#18063) #
Wow... I even amaze myself... that I actually know this...

In 1886, game 6 of "World Series", John Clarkson of Chicago White Stockings uncorked a wild pitch in the 10th inning, which allowed Curt Davis to slide under the tag to win the series. It was nick named $15,000 slide, due to purse won by the St. Louis Browns, which was largest ever at that time.
_Simon - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:02 PM EST (#18064) #
Well, actually, according to the book I originally got that question from (it's been a longtime favorite to stump baseball trivia lovers everywhere), his last name was Welch. But close enough, I guess. You're up, Hamboy. Stump me.
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:05 PM EST (#18065) #
Yup, it was Curt Welch who made the "$15,000 slide".
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:10 PM EST (#18066) #
According to the book I read... it was Curt Davis... and what I wrote is almost direct quote from that book... which amazes me that I could quote the damn book but I can't for life of me remember the title of the book....

Okay... Next question is...

Who struck out most batter in a game as a relief pitcher?
_Rob - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:11 PM EST (#18067) #
Randy Johnson -- it was a suspended game and he pitched the 3rd through 9th innings.
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:12 PM EST (#18068) #
Hmm...
Google result gives me:
Curt Davis - 2
Curt Welch - more than I can count

Okay... now I feel stupid
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:15 PM EST (#18069) #
I'm going to guess that it was a starter, who filled in during an emergency. OK, Randy Johnson?
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:17 PM EST (#18070) #
Rob, you know the answer and I'm just guessing. So who is Curt Gowdy and who is Joe Garagiola next year on BBRadio :)
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:18 PM EST (#18071) #
Randy Johnson is correct, with 16K.

Rob got it right first... so, Rob?
_Rob - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:21 PM EST (#18072) #
Where was the first professional baseball game that was played at night, under artificial lights?

Hint: I think it was in 1931.
_Rob - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:25 PM EST (#18073) #
Correction: April 28, 1930. (I'm getting this from The Baseball Timeline, a huge fold-out book I bought ten years ago.)

And it's a really obscure town, not by any means a major league city.
_Simon - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:30 PM EST (#18074) #
I don't know where, but wasn't it Van Der Meer's no-no, so I'd say Brooklyn? :s
_Simon - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:32 PM EST (#18075) #
Oh crap, i just re-read the question. I'd have to look that one up, so I guess I'm out.
_Rob - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:37 PM EST (#18076) #
It wasn't an MLB game, it was in the Western Association. This is probably way too obscure.

Here, I'll ask another question, and whoever answers either one first gets to ask the next one. I'll reveal both the answers after the first correct guess.

Anyway, the new question...
Who was the last National League player to hit over .400? And you are not allowed to visit this page to find the answer.
Mike D - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:38 PM EST (#18077) #
Rogers Hornsby?
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:39 PM EST (#18078) #
I know the answer, but it's not fair, so I'll let someone else have a turn.
Mike D - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:39 PM EST (#18079) #
Bill Terry?
Mike D - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:40 PM EST (#18080) #
I guess it's not fair having two guesses...but I think it's one of the two. Terry?
_Rob - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:41 PM EST (#18081) #
Bill Terry is correct!
And the answer for the other question was Enid, Oklahoma (portable lights).

Mike D, take it away.
Mike D - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:41 PM EST (#18082) #
Hooray for Memphis Bill!

Here's my question: Name the NBA team and the NFL team who drafted Dave Winfield.
Mike Green - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:44 PM EST (#18083) #
Winfield is from Minneapolis, and I have vague recollections that he was drafted by his hometown club, so I'll say the Vikings. I have no idea about the NBA team, but I'll try the Knicks.
Mike D - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:45 PM EST (#18084) #
One for two, Mike G...
_Simon - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:53 PM EST (#18085) #
It might get a little confusing if we do this, but I like the idea of having multiple questions on the board at once. I just love baseball trivia, and when I don't know an answer I want to try another question. What does everyone think?

I have no clue what NBA team drafted Winfield. The Pistons?
Mike D - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 03:56 PM EST (#18086) #
Nope. I'll un-confuse the matter and give the answer: The Hawks and Vikings.

And I'll yield the questioning rights to Simon.
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 04:10 PM EST (#18087) #
Multiple questions would be okay, but we MUST set a maximum, or else it would be insanity. I would say only 2 or MAYBE 3 questuons at a time.
_Simon - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 04:13 PM EST (#18088) #
Thanks Mike. Hmm...

Who had the only hit for the Braves in Harvey Haddix's near-perfect game in 1959? And who was the winning pitcher?
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 04:17 PM EST (#18089) #
Incidentally, the answer on lighting is correct, it was Enid, OK, but the date is April 6, 1930. Not 1931. There was only one professional team playing; the Kansas City Monarchs of the Negro National League, who had built a portable lighting system so that they could barnstorm at night.

And since it's my idea (OK, my stolen idea) I make the rules. Ha! I love power!

We only do one question at a time. BUT I will post another thread, so we can have two Trivia Challenges going at once.
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 04:17 PM EST (#18090) #
Simon, that's an insanely hard question. I like it.
Craig B - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 04:18 PM EST (#18091) #
Was the hitter Hank Aaron? And the winning pitcher... shot in the dark... Warren Spahn?
_Simon - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 04:28 PM EST (#18092) #
Nope, I'm afriad you're wrong on both counts...good guesses though.
_Hamboy - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 04:36 PM EST (#18093) #
Ugh... this is super hard...
hmmm... I'm trying to come up with any names in that Braves roster... and I'm coming up with...
Joe Adcock and Buhl?
_Simon - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 04:40 PM EST (#18094) #

wow, what a lucky guess!

Question: Who was the last (and I believe only) Blue Jay to be the victim of the hidden ball trick ?
_Rob - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 04:55 PM EST (#18099) #
Ah, I used to know that one; it was an outfielder...Stewart, Cruz, Nixon, Merced...can't remember.

I'll go with Jose Cruz, but it's a shot in the dark.

When Dave Stieb almost pitched two no-hitters at the end of the 1988 season, who started for Cleveland and Baltimore in those two games?

No to all answers so far.

More hints:

Pitcher X has a last name that nobody else in MLB has ever had, and he went to Stanford. His last name of is one that Leaf fans just love to hear. :) He only struck out 41 in 153 innings that year. 41!
Pitcher Y was in his first MLB season (debut on July 30/88) and was a righthanded junkballer. He also shares my hometown of Burlington -- Iowa for him, however.

Question:

Who got the first win at Yankee Stadium?
_David C - Thursday, November 11 2004 @ 08:32 PM EST (#18115) #
Was it a Yankee? I'll take a blind guess and say it's the spitballer at the top of this thread

_Hamboy - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 11:43 AM EST (#18123) #

I'll guess Waite Hoyt.
_Hamboy - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 11:58 AM EST (#18125) #
Mike G.,
Your guess of Waite Hoyt, didn't do it, but you discarded correct answer of Bob Shawkey. Shawkey started the openning game of Yankee Stadium agaist Boston Red Sox and won it.

Your turn....
Mike Green - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 12:04 PM EST (#18126) #
Way too kind, Hamboy.

For that kindness, an easy one. Who was the first player to win an MVP award while playing for a losing ballclub?
Mike Green - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 12:14 PM EST (#18127) #
Ten minutes and no guesses. So, I guess it's time for a clue. He's a Hall of Famer.

Ripken did for sure but there must have been somebody before that
Mike Green - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 12:17 PM EST (#18129) #
I've got to go for lunch soon, so the clues will keep coming. He won the MVP award twice.
Mike Green - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 12:19 PM EST (#18130) #
Ripken did do it and he did win two MVP awards, but it's before Ripken.
_David C - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 12:20 PM EST (#18131) #
I've got a better one - Ernie Banks - he won back to back awards & the Cubs always sucked

If now can we have a hint of how far back to go?
Mike Green - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 12:22 PM EST (#18132) #
David C is correct. Ernie Banks is it. Hank Sauer won a MVP award with a .500 ballclub, but Banks' Cubs were the first to be below.

Your turn.

If anyone's interested, I have another question posed in the other Trivia thread.

I wondered where everyone had gone.
_Hamboy - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 01:16 PM EST (#18139) #
Los Angeles Dodgers $92M
New York Mets $90M
St. Louis Cardinals $78M

???
_Jonny German - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 01:21 PM EST (#18140) #
Hamboy has one of the teams. And the easy part about the size of the payroll is that all three are the same.
_Hamboy - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 01:25 PM EST (#18141) #
Hmm... only one, eh?
I'm guessing that one is Mets, so...

Mets
Astros, and
Giants?

I'll try Jonny's question
Phillies, Cardinals and...Astros or Rockies...I'll guess Astros

Mike Green - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 02:46 PM EST (#18146) #
Now, that was a Friday afternoon thing to do. If Hamboy guesses Astros and Jonny says that he went down swinging, and Green guesses Astros, what's that? Swinging at strike one from the on-deck circle?

Can I change to Phillies, Cardinal and Rockies please, Alex.
_Jonny German - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 03:11 PM EST (#18147) #
Sure can, Mike, but you've still only got one team right.
_Hamboy - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 03:17 PM EST (#18148) #
Hmmm... using my brain... it tells me that one of the team is Cards.

So...
Cardinals
Braves, and I'll go on the limb and say
D'Backs
_Jonny German - Friday, November 12 2004 @ 03:38 PM EST (#18149) #
Three more knee-buckling curves there, Hamboy!

The team you had right and the team Mike had right were not the same team. And you were very close to the payroll in your initial answer.

I hate those curve balls... not to mention those juicy high fastballs I just can't lay off.... bah!

Dodgers
Phillies, and those damn

I couldn't believe Gibson wasn't unanimous in 68 - I looked it up and he got all 20 votes - so did the AL winner that year - I guess they must not have been in the first third to do so...

I won't be around in the morning, so I'll spill. The answer is Koufax, Koufax, and Koufax.

Someone else can fire off another question whenever they wish.

Bah! Trick Question!

Uhhhm, who was the last switch hitter to lead the MLB in homeruns?
_David C - Saturday, November 13 2004 @ 01:53 AM EST (#18162) #
What current GM once played for the Jays?
_David C - Saturday, November 13 2004 @ 01:58 AM EST (#18163) #
Well Mantle certainly did - best switch hitter since then was Eddie Murray - he ever lead the league? Best current switch hitter is Lance Berkman...OK I give up

Cal Ripken's consecutive games streak began May 30, 1982, against the Blue Jays. Who were the starting pitchers in that game?

(I won the Headline Sports trivia contest with this question a few years back. Received a HS baseball cap and the adulation of the dozens of viewers still watching at 11:30 pm.)
_David C - Saturday, November 13 2004 @ 08:16 PM EST (#18166) #
Total guess - Luis Leal & El Presidente
_Jordan - Saturday, November 13 2004 @ 09:17 PM EST (#18167) #
Nope. Hint: they had the same first name.
_David C - Saturday, November 13 2004 @ 10:08 PM EST (#18168) #
Clancy & Palmer woo hoo!
_Jordan - Saturday, November 13 2004 @ 11:08 PM EST (#18169) #
Close, very close....but you've only Gott it half right. :-)
Craig B - Sunday, November 14 2004 @ 01:57 PM EST (#18170) #
Ha ha! Jim Palmer and Jim Gott.
Craig B - Sunday, November 14 2004 @ 02:05 PM EST (#18171) #
Wow! Gott and Roy Lee Jackson combined for a one-hitter in that game.

Speaking of which, here is my trivia question...

Who pitched the very first one-hitter in Blue Jays history? (For the Jays, that is).
_Paul D - Sunday, November 14 2004 @ 02:13 PM EST (#18172) #
Jim Clancy?
Craig B - Sunday, November 14 2004 @ 04:45 PM EST (#18173) #
Nope! Clancy did pitch the first two-hitter in Jays history, though.
_Evair Montenegr - Sunday, November 14 2004 @ 05:38 PM EST (#18174) #
Last switch-hitter to lead the majors in HR...Howard Johnson?
Mike Green - Sunday, November 14 2004 @ 08:01 PM EST (#18175) #
Lemanczyk? If not, then Stieb.
Craig B - Sunday, November 14 2004 @ 09:21 PM EST (#18176) #
And Mike Green nails it, out of left field, with Dave Lemanczyk! It was in '79.

Fire away, Mike.
