Brewing alternatives?
What's in the bottom drawer
Waiting for things to give?

  1. "Hill headlines Jays' Fall Leaguers" by Spencer Fordin:

The Arizona Fall League has already started its session, opening its doors to some of the most intriguing young players in the game. The Blue Jays sent a talent-rich class headed by Aaron Hill, perhaps the top offensive prospect in the organization. Add a couple high-profile arms and the Jays have plenty of reason to watch the Arizona box scores.

That part won't be hard. The baby Blue Jays are all on the same team -- the Peoria Saguaros, helmed by Marty Pevey. That's a reassuring piece of info for Toronto's brain-trust as Pevey, the manager at Triple-A Syracuse, will make sure he puts the young Jays in the best position to succeed. He's already coached two of the players, and he'll see the rest next season.

Hill definitely leads this group, both in terms of name recognition and future potential. The shortstop was Toronto's first-round pick in 2003, and he's done nothing to diminish his status ever since. Hill batted .280 with 11 homers and 26 doubles at Double-A New Hampshire this season, helping lead the way to the Eastern League championship. He was also named an All-Star and the MVP of the 2004 Futures Game.

If everything works out according to plan, the Jays think the 22-year-old could join the Major League club by next August. Plate discipline is among Hill's noted skills -- he walked 63 times, contrasted by just 61 strikeouts.

  2. "Baseball makes gains in Canada" by Richard Griffin:

Speaking of Canadian baseball, it's been a wonderful building year for awareness and interest in this country. It's been a long dry spell. Ever since the strike of 1994 and the subsequent downturn in the fortunes of the Jays franchise, and with the Expos headed south to D.C., amateur baseball registration by young Canadian athletes has continued to decline since '95.

Change is finally in the air. In the wake of an encouraging 2004, Canadian baseball has a chance to rebuild. The spike in Canadian baseball interest was most certainly led by Team Canada's hustling performance at the Athens Olympics.

Even deprived of the services of two of its key players, cleanup hitter Justin Morneau, called to the majors by the Twins, and starter Jeff Francis, whose presence was inexplicably denied by the Rockies, the nation was excited about the Olympic team. If Canada had beaten an old Cuban squad in the semis, they would have faced Australia for the gold. They lost to a tougher Japan for the bronze.

Also important to the rebounding interest in Canadian baseball was the performance of possible NL rookie-of-the-year Jason Bay of the Pirates. Add the continuing presence of established MLB stars such as outfielder Larry Walker, third baseman Corey Koskie and bullpen closer Eric Gagne. Throw in the rise of A's pitcher Rich Harden and you begin to see a nice Canadian body of work.

  3. "Kydland and Prescott win Economics Nobel Prize" by Mike Moffatt:

The Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2004 was just awarded this morning to Finn E Kydland and Edward C Prescott "for their contributions to dynamic macroeconomics: the time consistency of economic policy and the driving forces behind business cycles". Details can be found at the Nobel Prize website. I think Prescott was a long overdue choice and predicted he'd be one of the leading candidates.

This was way, way overdue. Better late than never, I suppose. Kydland and Prescott's "Time to Build and Aggregate Fluctuations" is probably the most important macroeconomics paper in the last 25 years. This probably would have come sooner if the Chicago-Northwestern-Minnesota-Rochester neoclassical macro cabal which Prescott belongs to hadn't already been dominating the prizes since the 1970's.

I forgot about the Nobel prizes, even though I was reminded my one of my profs last week. Apparently there's somewhere on the nobel site where you can watch the videos of each of the nominees presenting their topic. I couldn't find them in my very brief search, but they should be there.

I feel like I should be interested in this stuff, but I find the majority of journal articles very difficult to get through.

Don't even try to go through "Time to Build and Aggregate Fluctuations" with having some knowledge of Bellman equation style optimization. It's a pretty technical paper, but VERY important. Even I recognize its importance and I'm not a Macro guy. :)

_Moffatt - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 11:59 AM EDT (#26774) #
I don't know if either of them will hit well enough to play 1st, but it's certainly possible.

I imagine Hattig will pan out to be a utility infield bat in the majors (think Tom Wilson but can play 3rd instead of C), but you never know.

The past few seasons the Jays have always been teasing with excellence, only to be utterly disapointed. I feel like I'm in line for the new Star Wars (tm) films.

Maybe it's just Fordin's words, but I am truly excited about these young guns (older than me) who are comming up.

Wouldn't it be sweet if we could listen to Peoria Saguaros games on the radio.

So is it just assigned at random with no real meaning? "I'll say all the plays as they happen and you say slightly less and embelish after I'm done"?
_Rob - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 12:15 PM EDT (#26780) #

_Moffatt - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 12:16 PM EDT (#26781) #
It's not assigned at random at all. Usually the play-by-play guy is a professional broadcaster whereas the colour guy is almost always a former player or manager.
_Rob - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 12:17 PM EDT (#26782) #
Well, usually the PBP is done by the broadcasting guy and the colour man is the former player. Not always, though.

PBP - as it happens
colour - analysis and insight into what just happened

Tom and Jerry are the exception, as they take turns on PBP. Mr. Five Tool Radio Host is colour, I guess.

Prof. Mophatt (better get used to it, pal!) - I'm just getting fascinated by this word "oligopolistic." It just sounds so cool, like horses charging down the backstretch.

Now my understanding of the concept is a little dim (hey, I'm a Literature guy - ask me about James Joyce) - I think we all understand, more or less, the concept of a monopoly. Would an oligopoly be something like the auto industry - where the players are so few that if one of them farts, everybody still has to hold their nose? Like, if GM cuts prices by 25%, Ford and Chrysler must do likewise.

Or should I shut the hell up, and go back to reading Finnegans Wake?
_Jobu - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 03:22 PM EDT (#26802) #
General topic to debate on a slow afternoon:

Who has the best curve ball in the majors?

Discuss.
_Magpie - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 03:39 PM EDT (#26803) #
the best curve ball in the majors?

When I hear the words "curve ball" today, my mind says "Barry Zito" - the way it once said Gregg Olson, or before that Bert Blyleven.

Note - these are all AL guys. I just don't see enough NL baseball. The first NL curve I think of is Chris Carpenter, and I know him from the AL. It might be Ben Sheets, but I dunno...

The whole range of pitches is interesting.

The first change-up I think of is Pedro Martinez, because how often have I seen Trevor Hoffman?

Best slider - K.Rod or the Big Unit?
_Fozzy - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 03:39 PM EDT (#26804) #
Jobu: I may have a bias, but Ted Lilly's has got to be right up there this year. That thing is has crazy drop to it, and it's so much slower than his fastball! When it's on, it's deadly, and he used it quite well against lefties and righties this year.

The curve certainly seems to be fading as far as how many pitchers seem to be using it though, especially well, in favour of the slider. Though it's more deceptive, I thought the slider was supposed to shred your elbow and shoulder?
_Jobu - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 03:49 PM EDT (#26805) #
I know my house league coach refused to teach us the slider for those reasons.

Lilly's curve has looked downright sick sometimes this year. His curve in real life looks like the Uber-Curve I gave Doc in MVP after I messed around in his stats.

I know word on the street is all curves are compared to Zito, but I dont see much A's ball, so I don't know wither to believe the hype.
_Magpie - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 03:53 PM EDT (#26806) #
There are some guys who throw a pitch that no one seems quite sure whether it's a curve or a slider. Duane Ward was one - every hitter in the league thought of it as a slider, but Ward and his catchers regarded it as a hard curve. Pedro Martinez likewise throws a pitch, that Pedro calls a slider although it breaks more like a curve than a slider...

all curves are compared to Zito

Its still the state of the art, from what I've seen.
_6-4-3 - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 04:01 PM EDT (#26807) #
The Professor is so good, he can even answer while he's not here:

Oligopoly: A market for a good where a few major suppliers account for a large majority of sales.

So the auto industry is probably a good example. My memory from 1st year Econ is dim, but that seems to fit the definition.

As for best curve, Zito is the name that springs to mind, but I don't think I can actually endorse him, because I don't see him often.

Lilly's curve amazed me when I saw it. I remember being at the Dome when he beat the Red Sox in August, and his curve was incredible.

As for MVP Baseball, any Halladay curve has to be better than that inexplicable palmball that he throws.

_Rob - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 04:12 PM EDT (#26811) #
I still don't know why Grady (that is, Gardy) pulled Santana after 5. I was in the next room at the time and my dad screams, "They pulled Santana and put in some Aussie pitcher!" I came running in, not sure what had happened to the sixth inning while I was getting juice, because NOBODY sane would pull Johan Santana after five innings and 87 pitches in an elimination game. Wilner confirmed my bewilderment later that night on the postgame show -- "If you have to empty the bullpen in Game 5, so be it, because you won't even be there if you don't win Game 4."
Also, the always-Rincon-in-the-8th mindset. Balfour was on fire, keep him in. Gardy really screwed up.

As for MVP Baseball, any Halladay curve has to be better than that inexplicable palmball that he throws.

That damned pitch ruined my Clemens-Doc Pitcher Showdown against the AL All Star Lineup. Hung a palmball (which I think only Doc has) to Delgado, of all people. Lost 9-7.
In other MVP news, how long does it normally take one to get used to the pitching motions? I've been giving up 10 runs a game every time I play -- even to the Louisville Bats, with HLH himself on the mound! And I've had the game for two months now!

Jobu: Give me the under. Manny will stop being the mature ballplayer he's acted like and will get tossed in Game 2.

I guess I'm only 4 weeks into my Masters, so maybe it shouldn't all make sense yet.

Where are you doing your Masters, Paul D?

Hey Moffatt, did you ever think of updating your name to Mophatt to be hip with the kids?

Hahahah. My sister and I are both threatening to buy personalized liscence plates that say "MO PHAT". I've got the ultimate rap name, but since I'm not quite as white as eminem I don't think I cuold have much of a career in that direction?

I think it is these guys who give cabals a bad name. Was Rochester really in the cabal or is Moffat just trying to get some of the credit?

Certainly was. My old macro prof at Rochester, Per Krusell, was always talking about the "five good guys" of Chicago, Northwestern, Minnesota, Rochester, and U Penn.

Over the last 30 years Rochester was a top-5 Macro school. Guys like Barro, Krusell, Greenwood, Rebelo, Stockman, etc. Then there is Fogel who won the '93 prize for his work in Economic history.

As for me getting the credit: I only passed Krusell and Greenwood's mandatory macro courses because the smartest student in my class took pity on me and took me under her wing and helped me study. Me doing Macro is like a pitcher trying to hit. :)

Would an oligopoly be something like the auto industry - where the players are so few that if one of them farts, everybody still has to hold their nose?

The car industry would be a great example. The industry I work closest with is the car rental industry which is also really ogopolistic. Any industry where you 2-8 big players make up the vast majority of the market would count.

What I do is figure out how the car rental companies react when one of them.. umm.. farts.. as you put it, and how they should react. It's pretty much the economic equivalent of asking If the other guy pulls his starter and puts in a LOOGY, should I pinch hit for my second baseman? It's actually a surprising amount of fun and quite lucrative. Easily the best job I've ever had.

Back to baseball: Who are we cheering for tonight - The Braves or the Astros?

The Braves. I have disliked their team for years, but I this year I have really enjoyed watching them play---plus you gotta love an underdog.
_Jobu - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 07:41 PM EDT (#26838) #
I'm cheering for the Astros because the Braves have won enough times and don't even sell the upper deck for playoff games, and because I bought an astros jersey last year for twenty bucks.
_6-4-3 - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 07:46 PM EDT (#26839) #
According to a FAQ I found, Tony Fiore is the only other pitcher who throws a palmball in MVP (and he actually throws it in real life). I know Satchel Paige also has the pitch in the game, but I think that's it. Odd that they put in that pitch for those two pitchers (and Halladay)

how long does it normally take one to get used to the pitching motions?

I got used to it after a week or so, when I got the original version. But then, I'd been playing golf games that use the same mechanism.

I'm cheering for the Astros. I'd like to see Yankees / Astros or Red Sox / Astros (Clemens. Fenway. Halloween. It must happen.)

Funny thing about MVP, I can pitch shut outs on MVP difficulty, but if I try to bat on MVP I look like Kevin Cash on a sedative.
_Rob - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 08:06 PM EDT (#26841) #
Braves
Pros: Ummm...the pitching coach who always rocks back and forth
Cons: The Chop!!!!!!

Astros
Pros: Bagwell, Biggio, winning after firing One-M
Cons: Clemens

Well, I'll be cheering for Houston tonight. Not even close. ;)

Funny thing about MVP, I can pitch shut outs on MVP difficulty, but if I try to bat on MVP I look like Kevin Cash on a sedative.

You're telling me. I was tired of playing as the Jays, and wanted to use the legends, because I'd unlocked them all. So, I started a new franchise as the Red Sox, and started with a fantasy draft so the teams would be relatively equal. I also decided to play on MVP mode, because I found it too easy to hit on All-Star. Well, I could still (sorta) hit, but Catfish Hunter turned into the other Jim Hunter, and Pedro "Ace" Martinez turned into Pedro "the Yankees are my daddy" Martinez.

The second funny thing is that I always get lit up when I pitch as Gagne, even on All-Star. If I throw his change a lot, I'm fine, but when I start to use his slider or curve, he gives up a lot of hits.

2-0 again. Wright obviously didn't read Craig Burley's great article over at the Hardball Times.

Mmm, double play.

I know where your coming from Jobu.

It's weird though, I can pitch shutouts but I can't hit worth a lick. But the only hits I do get are home runs. You'd have thought that the likes of Doug Davis would have learned to never throw me a mistake "white ball" but I guess not.

"Mistake white ball pitch" = Home Run all day

And does anyone else have the lefty homerun problem? I can mash a 450 ft hr with Kevin Cash if I get a good pitch... but I can't hit ANY homers with lefties NOT named Carlos Delgado.

Am I alone on this, or is this some sort of game glitch?
_Jobu - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 08:28 PM EDT (#26846) #
It's a well documented glitch Dave, you don't have to feel persecuted anymore.
_Emerald - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 08:36 PM EDT (#26847) #
I'm saying over, although I could easily say under. When you've got Mike Mussina and Pedro Martinez pitching in an over hyped series (Not to mention Tanyon Sturtze) something's gotta happen. Although this series could just amaze people by being uneventful.

Call me indecisive. Anyway, it's an odd situation for Rafael Furcal today. Win, and get to play against St. Louis. Lose, and go to Jail!

C'mon Atlanta.
_Paul D - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 09:12 PM EDT (#26848) #
I'm doing a MABE (Masters of Arts in Business Economics) at Laurier. They call it business economics because we can take up to three of our electives from the MBA program. I'm kind of leaning towards sticking with the econ classes though. We can also take our electives from the Master's program at Waterloo.

I'll take the over, and I'll also predict that Johnny Pesky will charge Kevin Brown, who will throw him to the ground.

Today's irrelevant stat - position players with exactly one plate appearance during the 2004 regular season:

Jack Cust (BAL)
Willy Taveras (HOU)
Corey "Sunglasses At Night" Hart (MIL)
Justin Knoedler (SFO)

Not to scoop tomorrow's Roundup, but Dr. Prison Fence has a mailbag. I think this is the first time I've seen a mailbag column at an MLB site. It's pretty good, too. COMN for answers (that most of you already know, but still) to questions about Delgado, Johnson, and Frasor. And it mentions Brad "Remember Him?" Fullmer!
_Emerald - Monday, October 11 2004 @ 11:10 PM EDT (#26857) #
Alright Houston we get the point already. You don't have to win by a zillion zillion runs.

I'll take over...If a player on one club does something stupid enough to get ejected they'll either have the manager go down with them or entice an opponent to go for the early shower too.
Craig B - Tuesday, October 12 2004 @ 09:00 AM EDT (#26860) #
I'm going with OVER 1.5 ejections, because I WANT TO CHEER FOR EJECTIONS. Come on. If a Yankee or Sock gets ejected, don't you want to stand up, pump your fist and do a little skipping step Jeter-style, and say "YEEEEEEEAAAAAAAHH"?

I knew you did.
