The National League is in action today. The Braves seek to rebound from the thumping they took in game 1, but Roy Oswalt will be a tough nut to crack. They'll need to play great defence and a solid effort from Mike Hampton to win.

Tonight, it's Jeff Weaver's turn to take a stroll through Assasins' Alley. Look for the Sea of Red to win another one and for Eric Gagne to have a tuneup inning at the end of the game.

Hey Bauxites!

I know it's been kinda slow in here the last few days, but I wanted to get the word out that this evening's guest on the BJADPPGS will be Josh Towers.

He'll be available to take your phone calls starting at 7:05 Eastern, and if you're not in Toronto, you can dial us up at www.fan590.com.

And just a hint, exclusive to Da Box - for some odd reason, people tend to wait to call until the second segment (after the 7:20 update), so we're usually slow until then, and then slammed afterwards and trying to rush through callers to get to all of them. Therefore, if you want to make sure you have time to talk to Josh, call early.

Also, I thought the stuff that you guys did in tribute to John Cerutti was wonderful, heartfelt and meaningful. It's funny, I saw him a lot more than you all did, but I don't feel as though I knew him as well as you, not having gotten to hear his work on the broadcast at all for the past three years. It seemed as though our prep times ran counter to each other's, and that I was always doing stuff while he was eating, and vice-versa. We had a friendly relationship, but never really sat down and talked, and I regret that a great deal.

Hi Mike. I just wanted to let you know that I thought you did a fantastic job on "The Blue Jays This Week". I'm sure that it wasn't easy having to talk to Brian Williams and J.P. Ricciardi under less than ideal circumstances about John Cerutti. I thought you handled it really well considering you really didn't have a whole lot of time to really prepare for the show. Great job!

Thanks for the kind words, Mike, and for the BJADPPGS heads-up.

Interesting game in Atlanta. Hampton was pretty good, until he limped off in the seventh, but Oswalt was just a bit better, escaping trouble when he had to.

The bottom of the seventh was very strange, with the Astros' bullpen phone not working, a long delay while they tried to discern whether Brad Lidge was ready, an ill-advised suicide squeeze that the Braves were very lucky went foul, then Furcal finally thrown out at the plate trying to score the tying run on a wild pitch.

Bobby Cox is apparently playing the game under protest now, presumably because Phil Cuzzi allowed Phil Garner an extra mound visit during the confusion or was deliberately delaying the game to stall the rally. Both teams went to their closers early, and the heart of the Atlanta order is coming up.

Anyone know if we'll have to endure Justice and Sutcliffe in the next round of playoffs? They make the little hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 06:46 PM EDT (#27665) #
Which one is justice? I'm trying to remember all the combos...IIRC, there's Miller/Morgan, Buck/McCarver, Berman/Sutcliffe/Gwynn...I must be missing the one that includes Justice.
Coach - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 06:46 PM EDT (#27666) #
Raul Chavez is having an unbelievable game. A solo homer, cut down Furcal's foolish attempt to score on the wild pitch in the seventh, threw out Drew trying to steal this inning and just saved another run. It's now a 2-2 tie, but the Braves would already be in front without the superb job by the Astros catcher.
_Chuck Van Den C - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 06:52 PM EDT (#27667) #
Justice is doing the Atlanta game.
Coach - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 06:55 PM EDT (#27668) #
The nicest thing I can say about Justice is that he makes Sutcliffe almost tolerable by comparison.

Tough call for Garner now as Lidge has worked hard for 1.2 innings and thrown over 30 pitches.

John Smoltz = Hit King
_rodent - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 07:04 PM EDT (#27670) #
What a player Smoltz is. The indelible image for me is his head-first slide into second...was it in the seventh game of the 92 series? Was he a pinch runner?
Coach - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 07:05 PM EDT (#27671) #
Despite Smoltz' flare, Lidge actually looked better in the ninth than he had in the eighth; Drew was helpless against his breaking stuff. I care less about this series than any of the others, and this hasn't been a brilliantly-played game, but it's exciting anyway.
_Magpie - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 07:05 PM EDT (#27672) #
I think the technical term for the Houston-Atlanta game is "Humdinger"

Did anyone else think of Earl Weaver when the Braves led off an inning by going single-walk-single-double and came away with one run?

"If you play for one run, that's all you're going to get."
_Rob - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 07:09 PM EDT (#27673) #
Whoa. Smoltz pitched the 8th and 9th, and he isn't lifted for a pinch-hitter? Of course, the Braves only have Marrero on the bench (says Gameday), but you figure they could have avoided that. Or maybe Cox wants three from Smoltz.

And I like bringing Lidge and Smoltz in "early". It's the playoffs, you need your best in there. (Simplistic, I know.)
Coach - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 07:18 PM EDT (#27674) #
Rob, I wasn't being critical about the use of the bullpen aces. Both managers are playing like this is the deciding game. Garner has pushed all the right buttons so far, but his bench is now depleted and Miceli's going to have to hold them. Cox ran himself out of a big inning to prolong it, and Furcal's blunder was also costly, yet they might even up the series.

Josh Towers was a no-show, but Dave Bush is on the radio now with Wilner.
Coach - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 07:38 PM EDT (#27675) #
Furcal wins it. I hope they tire each other out for five games.

The comments about the new pitching coach were interesting. I remember hearing something with Florida but does anybody have more specifics on the controversy
Thomas - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 07:54 PM EDT (#27677) #
Mark,

Brad Arnsberg was the pitching coach in Florida when AJ Burnett ran up ridiculously high pitch counts and subsequently blew out his elbow. The way they handled Burnett was the textbook definition of how not to handle a young pitcher. Its said he works pitchers very heavily, and when he was fired from Florida's staff along with Jeff Torborg it apparently was an ugly incident.

JP has interviewed him and must feel confident that Arnsberg will protect our pitchers' health and that his approach is sound, but I have more reservations about this hiring (even from when he was hired in AAA) than I have about any other move JP's made with the coaching staff.
_Magpie - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 08:11 PM EDT (#27678) #
Brad Arnsberg was the pitching coach in Florida

Indeed he was. The Florida pitchers all loved him. Arnsberg was evidently unhappy about being scapegoated and there appears to have been "words exchanged" when Beinfest fired him.

Still, I would be much more inclined to look at the manager if you want to assign responsibility for the abuse - and abuse it was - of the young Florida pitchers. The manager decides when to change pitchers, and that was Jeff Torborg's call. Pitching coaches, by definition, can't overwork the pitcher. Unless the manager allows it.

Jeff Torborg started out in baseball catching Sandy Koufax and Don Drysdale, both of whom were basically ridden until their arms fell off by Walter Alston. But they won a couple of pennants and a WS while Torborg was there. In Torborg's final season as a player, Clyde Wright pitched 257 IP, Bill Singer pitched 315 IP, and Nolan Ryan pitched 326 IP. That's the game Torborg grew up in, those are the pitchers he worked with, and his inclination has always been to ride his starters.
Coach - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 08:15 PM EDT (#27679) #
Like Magpie says. Arnsberg's firing was spun into an "ugly incident" by those bastions of truth in the Marlins front office. His pitchers, without exception, rave about him. In fact, A.J. Burnett was the first to stand up for him.

"There's a rumor out there that our management had known there was a bone spur in my elbow upon arriving from the Montreal Expos to the Florida Marlins, and both Brad Arnsberg and Jeff Torborg were not told about this," Burnett said (immediately after they were fired). "I'm sure if they were told about this, I would have been handled differently."

I always take a player's word over anything that Jeff Loria and David Samson say. Mike Berardino of the Sun-Sentinel, much closer to the scene than me, had nothing but praise for Arnsberg:

No coach has ever cared more about his athletes, and no one will ever work any harder on their behalf.

Arnsberg treated his pitchers like sons. He invested physically, mentally and emotionally in them. He went hunting with them, fishing with them, running with them.

Brad is more intense than Gil Patterson, and may challenge his (not "our") pitchers more, but John Gibbons will make the decisions about pitch counts.

Coach - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 08:24 PM EDT (#27681) #
Jayson Werth takes Marquis deep to draw first blood in what could be a high-scoring game. Last time Jeff Weaver faced the Cards in St. Louis, against a lineup with John Mabry, Hector Luna and Marlon Anderson starting in place of Albert Pujols, Edgar Renteria and Reggie Sanders, he gave up 8 hits and walked 4. This should be fun.

Beltre 4 MVP crazy talk

If they disqualified Bonds because he's too good to compare to anyone else, gave him a lifetime achievement award and presented the MVP to the best of the rest, I'd give the nod this year to Beltre, mostly because Pujols, Edmonds and Rolen (all more deserving than anyone in the AL) had each other in the lineup.

They're pounding Rolen inside, which is living dangerously. He settled for a walk this time, but something tells me he'll make them pay later. Edmonds has had better at-bats; it looked like he was going for the three-run jack with two strikes and two away, when a single would have been just dandy.

Blue Jay A Day Pre-Pre-Game Show, Daryn. It precedes the ESPN pregame, and it features a different Blue Jay each day. Sometimes not the one who's supposed to be there; once some old blogger had to pinch-hit for Vernon Wells.

Marquis was great for the Cards (and my BBFL team) for five months, but he's either tired or sore, and I cut him a couple of weeks ago, so I'm not surprised at this.

It's the achilles heel of an otherwise great club. Carpenter's hurt, Morris has been inconsistent, Woody's showing his age -- I really think Danny Haren and Rick Ankiel are better than the so-called rotation right now.

Well done, Coach, if I could award cuttlefish, you'd have one. By the way, Josh Towers is confirmed for tomorrow's show - he was very apologetic about missing tonight. And hey, if any of you Bauxites realize the special significance of the first home run of this (4th) inning, mazel tov! Who wants to try to figure out if this is the first time it's ever happened in the post-season?
Coach - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 10:03 PM EDT (#27721) #
Mazel tov, eh? That's probably a clue, but it can't be as simple as a Jewish player hitting a post-season HR; Hank Greenberg went deep in more than one World Series.

If I'm right, though, I'll be swimming in cuttlefish. A little wasabi and a glass of sake and I'll be all set.

Putting Rick Ankiel in a position to start a playoff game would be suicide right now.

I realize that he might have flashbacks to 2001, but he was great in four our of five outings, except for one in Coors. How about starting Al Reyes and his 0.75 ERA for three innings, then bringing Ricky in out of the pen? TLR's going to have to do something creative, or Wilner will be right, and we can't have that.

Jobu - I never did ask Russ Adams about Thrillhouse (you could have if you'd called in to the BJADPPG show on Tuesday), but I did talk to Brandon League about the Hawaiian Punch-Out, and I'm going to have to play that interview sometime. It was originally scheduled to air on the last TBJTW of the season, but the tragic circumstances forced us to turn that whole show around.

Anyway, none of you have gotten my little trivia question from earlier. Coach, decent idea, but Green wasn't the first Jewish ballplayer to hit a post-season HR. The last one before his happened this afternoon. :-)
_DGriebeling - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:26 PM EDT (#27752) #
Ok, now its ridiculous... I'd rather see blank air time than a 10 second GD-Football commercial...
_Jobu - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:31 PM EDT (#27753) #
Thrillhouse was on this Tuesday!? Damn my crappy teenage employment causing me to miss the important things in life. If he's on again, you can expect a call ;)
_Jobu - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:33 PM EDT (#27754) #
A wild guess at Wilner's challange:

The first time a Jewish batter hit a homerun off a Jewish pitcher in the post season?
_braden - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:34 PM EDT (#27755) #
A bit late but Ray King's Gameday picture is hands down the best I have seen so far. His neck is completely AWOL.
Coach - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:34 PM EDT (#27756) #
Most of the Assassins took the night off, but the Cards' 6-7-8 hitters are 8-for-10 with 5 runs scored and 5 RBI.

Saturday, it's Lima Time. Jose may be 1-5, 6.75 in his career vs. the Cards (10 starts and 5 relief appearances) in the regular season, but he'll be pumped.

Robert, good call on the result, right down to the Gagne tuneup inning.
Gerry - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:36 PM EDT (#27757) #
Coach, decent idea, but Green wasn't the first Jewish ballplayer to hit a post-season HR. The last one before his happened this afternoon. :-)

Rafael Furcal - Jewish, I never knew.

How about two home runs by jewish ballplayers in one day? BTW who was the other one?
Thomas - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:43 PM EDT (#27758) #
Just like how I refuse to eat at Wendy's now.

A classic triple combo, biggie sized. I can't resist. No cheese, please.
_Braby - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:44 PM EDT (#27759) #
Why is this guy talking about Gagne throwing fastballs and being too smart to show the St Louis hitters his "real" stuff? As he's saying this he starts off Larry Walker w/ 3 88 mph changeups and finishes him off w/ a 97 mph fastball.
_Jobu - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:50 PM EDT (#27760) #
Classic triple combo!? Geez... I didn't know I was in the presence of billionaires!
_Mike Wilner - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:51 PM EDT (#27761) #
Jobu - congratulations! It was a HR by a Jewish ballplayer off a Jewish pitcher. I'm not sure that this has ever happened before in the post-season.

The other one was Brad Ausmus - and in the tradition of "sometimes these 4:00 first-round games all melt into one another, he went deep yesterday. Sorry about that.
Coach - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:54 PM EDT (#27762) #
So Furcal isn't Jewish?
_Mike Wilner - Thursday, October 07 2004 @ 11:56 PM EDT (#27763) #
No, he's not. Can you believe it? If he had been, it'd be the biggest surprise since Jose Bautista. Anyway, we're not so big on the drunk drivers.

Naturally, I did a quick check of Sandy Koufax. Nope. Unless there's something we never knew about Tom Tresh or Mickey Mantle....

Lou Boudreau never hit a WS homer...

Ken Holtzman allowed one, but it was Rusty Staub who hit it...

Hank Greenberg hit a bunch... off Dizzy Dean, Charlie Root (yes! the same!), Junior Thompson, Hank Wyse, and Ray Prim.
_Jobu - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 12:14 AM EDT (#27768) #
Well, as long as I don't have to cut down a tree with that herring...

the biggest surprise since Jose Bautista.

Naturally, I cheated and found a list. COMN. Ruben Amaro Jr surprised me. Mainly because there's no Ruben Amaro Sr. There's probably a story there that's none of my business.

Any list that has Art Shamsky AND Mike Epstein AND Ron Blomberg is pretty cool, I think.

BUT - who on that list was a World Series MVP?

Thank goodness! He likes "Hawaiian Punch Out". Otherwise we'd be screwed. Now on to THRILLHOUSE.....

Great interview Mr. W
_Rob - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 12:32 AM EDT (#27776) #
Stupid question, but why is this on at 12:26? Not that I'm complaining, of course, but the Brandon Heat King SHOOGY Flyin' Hawaiian Punch-Out with Goggles deserves a time slot that does not start with 00 in the 24-hour clock.

I don't think I've ever heard "you know" that many times per minute before in my life....

Well, you know, Jobu, Brandon's just, you know, excited to, you know, be with the team and, you know, he's just trying to, you know, help out the team, you know, as much as he can.

I've got to say, Flyin' Hawaiian does it for me more than Hawaiian Punch-Out. I thought he was the Flyin' Hawaiian, and the Hawaiian Punch-Outs were his strikeouts.
_Rob - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 12:36 AM EDT (#27777) #
Am I the only one who has learned how to spell "Hawaiian" quickly and easily just because of League?

And leave poor Wilner alone with the Russ Adams/Thrillhouse stuff, Jobu. He's got enough on his plate, what with watching a baseball game and playing week-old interviews after midnight. ;)
_Jobu - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 12:38 AM EDT (#27778) #
I kid, because I care....
_Magpie - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 12:43 AM EDT (#27779) #
Look for the Sea of Red to win another one and for Eric Gagne to have a tuneup inning at the end of the game.

A great hobby for all:

Buy baseball cards when you're about 10 and don't know much about baseball. Don't look at them for a decade, and then rumage through them one night when you're 20 and a little more baseball savvy. The laughs seemingly never stop. Oil Can Boyd anyone? Steve Bedrosian? Dave Mohorcic?
_G.T. - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:06 AM EDT (#27781) #
The laughs seemingly never stop. Oil Can Boyd anyone? Steve Bedrosian? Dave Mohorcic?

One of those guys won a Cy Young award...
_Jobu - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:10 AM EDT (#27782) #
I'm gonna have to say Bedrosian, just because I'm in love with his beard. Chris Bosio quadruples!? This just keeps getting better...
_Jobu - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:16 AM EDT (#27783) #
A GREG MYERS ROOKIE CARD!!!! I knew I was in this for more than just cheap laughs. This is so cool.
_Rob - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:21 AM EDT (#27784) #
Did somebody say old baseball cards?

The following are the first five players plucked from Score 1991, my first and only set. I have not looked at these cards in years:
Ron Jones, RF, Phillies
Ed Whitson, P, Padres
Kelly Downs, P, Giants
Alfredo Griffin, SS, Dodgers
Sil Campusano, OF, Philles

There's a ton of these. Thanks, Jobu, now I'll never get to sleep...
_Jobu - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:23 AM EDT (#27785) #
Rob, it all becomes magicaly worth it when you see the smiling face of Ken Caminiti, right in front of Glennalen Hill. Like I just did.
_G.T. - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:23 AM EDT (#27786) #
I'm gonna have to say Bedrosian, just because I'm in love with his beard

Yup. Speaking of beards, before Sportsnet's feature on Bill Lee tonight, I'd never seen him with his full beard Now THAT was freaky... Johnny Damon's got nothing on him. I can't imagine him pitching with that!
_Jobu - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:25 AM EDT (#27787) #
Geez, seeing these cards makes me long for the old days when pitchers who wore glasses were forced to wear large REALLY GEEKY protective glasses.
_Jobu - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:31 AM EDT (#27788) #
Wow, now my collection will never be complete until I track down Yaz with big sideburns, Sparky, and Bill Lee with the IdomoBeard look.
_Rob - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:32 AM EDT (#27789) #
Wow - I divided them into American and National Leagues! I was four, I'm shocked that I even knew what a baseball card was then. Stats current through 1990, heh.

Hey, I got Steve Bedrosian too! But it's only a normal beard in the picture. And Juan Samuel and Mariano Duncan right next to each other...who's next, Carlos Garcia? Mickey Morandini?

Trivia: Davey Johnson said the following about which Met player he coached in 1989?
"His instincts are outstanding and his speed is second to none."
Winner gets a picture of the mystery man. Hint: his last game was with the Blue Jays and his middle name was Milton.
_Jobu - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:37 AM EDT (#27790) #
Wow.... good question. That is definatly out of my leauge. I'll defer this to mr G.T. who knew that the guy I was laughing at won a Cy Young and is therefore, a better person than me.
_6-4-3 - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:37 AM EDT (#27791) #
Ooh, ooh, is it Juan Samuel?

Oddest thing about Baseball Mogul 200: Juan Samuel shows up on the Jays roster. Now that's inexplicable.
_Rob - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 01:41 AM EDT (#27792) #
More useless baseball card stuff:

In true Flying Hellfish style, the last of my baseball card players left standing in the majors will receive a bunch of German paintings. Here are the three candidates:
Kevin Brown
Andres Galarraga
B.J. Surhoff

Ooh, ooh, is it Juan Samuel?

:)

Oddest thing about Baseball Mogul 200: Juan Samuel shows up on the Jays roster. Now that's inexplicable.

In ASB 2000 for N64, Joey Cora is the starting 2B on the Jays. Tom Evans is at third, with Willie Greene and Jacob Brumfield on the bench.

That should've been 2003, but I got distracted by digging through my old cards:

Random baseball cards I just dug out:

Craig Biggio, Catcher, Astros (92) (next to it was Jeff Bagwell, ROY card) Nice to know that I own the baseball card of The 35th Greatest Player in Baseball History

Paul Molitor, 2B, Brewers.

A relief pitcher (and former Jay) listed as "the Brewers all time saves leader" The answer will astound you (he still has a decent lead over Rollie Fingers)

Gary Sheffield, 3B, Brewers (my response: WHAT!?! I just looked it up to make sure that this wasn't some error card. Unbelievable, especially when you look at the trade that shipped him out of town.)

"Future Star" Jose Offerman (SS, Dodgers, 91)

A frighteningly young looking Mike Scioscia, Catcher, Dodgers

Manager Joe Torre . . . of the Cardinals

DH / OF Ozzie Canseco

Devon White, OF, Angels

Cris "no, not Chris" Carpenter, piutcher, St. Louis.

And, most frighteningly of all, the Angels trio of Bob Boone, Alphonse "Dante" Bichette, and Jim Abbott.
_Jobu - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 02:11 AM EDT (#27794) #
And I got a Paul Molitor 3b Brewers. Let's see if together we can field an entire Molitor team.
_Magpie - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 03:19 AM EDT (#27795) #
the Brewers all time saves leader

Gotta be Dan Plesac...

"His instincts are outstanding and his speed is second to none."

I'm thinking Mookie. Samuel's instincts were second to a lotta guys.

Here's a card you'd have to see:

Craig B - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 09:02 AM EDT (#27796) #
And I got a Paul Molitor 3b Brewers. Let's see if together we can field an entire Molitor team.

Ooh! Ooh! I have a 1978 Topps "Rookie Shortstops" card featuring U L Washington, Alan Trammell, Mickey Klutts... and Paul Molitor!
Craig B - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 09:03 AM EDT (#27797) #
Holy @%^@&#. I didn't realize until just not that that's a pretty valuable card!
_Jobu - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 11:28 AM EDT (#27798) #
Alright..........lookin for Molitor at first. Who can help us out?
_6-4-3 - Friday, October 08 2004 @ 12:17 PM EDT (#27799) #
I was just looking for another Molitor, I was putting my box of cards back, I found a cardboard sign from the Toronto star, that says "Two-riffic" and features a giant Blue Jay wearing the championship trophy as a hat, while Cito Gaston is standing on a dirty, roly-poly Phillies player who can only be ESPN analyst John Kruk. Those were the days.

Other cards found:

"Oil Can" Boyd, Expo

Bo Jackson, Royal "He can do anything"

"Ruben [Sierra] might be the best player in baseball"

Maurice "Mo" Vaughn, Rising Star, Boston Red Sox.

Roger Clemens, Red Sock

Roberto Alomar, Padre, sporting a crazy moustache. The back of the card notes how he just tore up the California League

Curt Schilling, Oriole, about to be traded (with Steve Finley and another guy) for Glenn Davis. Baseball reference tells me that Curt has been traded for Mike Boddicker (Red Sox ----> Orioles), Davis (Orioles -----> Astros), and Jason Grimsley (Astros -----> Phillies) Yikes.
