The Jays hope to salvage a split in the 4-game series and retain a faint hope of catching the Devil Rays for 4th place. The Rays were smoked by the Detroit Tigers 8-0 this afternoon and are tied 4-4 in the 8th of the second game of their doubleheader. The Jays sit 2 games behind Tampa Bay with 4 games to go.

Oh good, Rod Black.
_Magpie - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:23 PM EDT (#29978) #
Its not often we get to observe someone breaking one of Bonds' records.

But Adam Dunn has done it - 191 Ks, two more than Barry's dad.

How about those Cuns - Prior Ks 16 and pitches a three hitter. They still lose in 12.

The "b" key is next to the "n" key on my keyboard. So confusing.
_Andrew Ward - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:28 PM EDT (#29980) #
I sure hope that this isn't one of the four last times that we see Carlos. I fear for the potency of our lineup without him. Sigh.
_Elijah - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:28 PM EDT (#29981) #
Whoa - the O's TV broadcast is like watching a game from the 70s. The centerfield camera is first base side of home plate. It'll take some getting used to.
_Elijah - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:29 PM EDT (#29982) #
Maybe Carlos can get to 100 RBI. 1-0.
_Andrew Ward - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:30 PM EDT (#29983) #
The defence rests, M'lud.
All hail King Carlos...
_Ron - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:30 PM EDT (#29984) #
King Carlos with the MAN POP!!!

That could be the last HR you see from Carlos in a Jays uni.

Hopefully he reaches the 100 RBI mark.

Five more to go, Ron.

Anybody else tired of the Rod Black's one-man campaign to put Delgado in an Orioles uniform?
_Andrew Ward - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:35 PM EDT (#29987) #
No, Jim, just tired of Rod Black period!
_CaramonLS - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:39 PM EDT (#29988) #
Maybe its quite selfish but I do not hope for anymore milestones from Carlos, especailly not 100Rbis - all it does is add to his price tag.
_Andrew W - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:51 PM EDT (#29989) #
Was that pitch to Quiroz really over his shoulders? (watching on Gamecast)
_Ron - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:51 PM EDT (#29990) #

I highly doubt Carlos's Value would be changed if he finished with 100 RBI's instead of 99 RBI's.
_joemayo - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:52 PM EDT (#29991) #
I am Jim. it honestly seems as if Rod hopes carlos lands in baltimore.
after hearing jp the other night it seems to be a forgone conclusion that he won't be resigned. seeing him in an opposing uniform will be bad enough, but if he does go to baltimore it will just add insult to injury. i don't know what i'll do if carlos is an O next year...

nice job frankie!
_Ron - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:54 PM EDT (#29992) #
Frankie with the MAN POP!!

He's been a pleasant suprise since coming over to the Jays. Looks like he always has something in the side of his mouth.
_Andrew W - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:54 PM EDT (#29993) #
Riley seems to get pretty rattled after a run scores.

"I've hit driven home 100 runs 7 seasons in a row"
"I've driven home 100 runs the 6 years prior to this year, but didn't quite make that 100 mark this year."

Carries a lot of weight Ron, you cannot under estimate stats and results.

You really think a team would change their offer to Carlos because of 1 less RBI?

Don't forget he got injured this season.

Every team out there knows what Carlos can do, a final stat line of 99 RBI's instead of 100 RBI's isn't going to make a difference.
_Rob - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 07:57 PM EDT (#29997) #
Frank "Leadoff HR" Menechino waited until his second at bat to jack one today. Not impressive at all.
_Elijah - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 08:00 PM EDT (#29998) #
100 RBI versus, well, now he has 96, won't change anything contract-wise, especially in the eyes of the Blue Jays in their attempt to re-sign him. That's what I assume you're talking about, CaramonLS.
_Daryn - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 08:01 PM EDT (#29999) #
Every team out there knows what Carlos can do,

yea I agree.. but here is a question, do we think Carlos is worth being the third highest paid player in the game?? That's where he is now... I suppose his new contract will be in the 8-12 range, but where would we rate him on the list of players in the game?? Near Jim Thome? Chipper Jones?? Derek Jeter... or Barry Bonds, A-Rod, I-Rod, Tejada, Sheff and Ramirez??
_Ron - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 08:04 PM EDT (#30000) #
I don't even care what Carlos's open market value is because I know he won't be in a Jays uni next season. All it takes is one team to really jack up his price. I'm sure some team will offer him at least 9 mil a season.

With the Jays having so many needs JP would be foolish to spend almost all the money he has to play with on Carlos.
_Elijah - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 08:10 PM EDT (#30001) #
Daryn, it's hard to compare the contract Carlos will receive with those of Manny, A-Rod or Jeter since those were all before the big market correction after 2000. A-Rod wouldn't even get $25 million per year in this baseball economy.

I think Carlos can reasonably get four years, $45-50 million. Thome got six years and $85 million at about the same age after 2002 and I don't think Carlos will get anywhere near that.
_Ron - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 08:14 PM EDT (#30002) #
That's the last we see of Towers this season, I wonder if he will be back as the 5th starter next season.

OK, if Ryan Glynn is coming in to work some long relief, who's starting on Fan Appreciation Day?

I agree, that's why I was thinking of just where on the list he'd be.. I think somewhere around Thome is about right...
_Ron - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 08:18 PM EDT (#30007) #
I'm guessing Chacin will start on Sunday with maybe a slim chance Miller gets the call.
_Braby - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 08:24 PM EDT (#30008) #
I can't see Chacin starting again for the Jays. He's pitched enough this year, and wouldn't Ted Lilly start before Chacin? Glynn may only pitch a couple innings.
_greenfrog - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 08:39 PM EDT (#30010) #
What a forgettable season (with a few bright lights--eg Rios, Russ Adams, Bush, League--no pun intended). In true Schadenfreude fashion, I'm now officially rooting for the highest 2005 draft pick possible.

Bush League. Heh, I don't know why I never noticed that before.

Combining two generations of players, we could have League Tabler (for the sabermetrician in you).
_Daryn - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 09:15 PM EDT (#30013) #
Is it just me? Or is Rod Black depressing the heck out of everyone else too??? Makes me want to turn the game off
_Daryn - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 09:21 PM EDT (#30014) #
Tabler sums is up...
the hallmark of a good team is strong up the middle, good SS, 2B, CF, Catcher and starters... that's 10 guys... maybe a corner man or two and a closer... whatdoya think Pat?
_Moffatt - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 09:24 PM EDT (#30015) #

Maybe, but one of those "Spring Training Celebrity Coaches" wouldn't be a bad idea at all..

Maybe, but one of those "Spring Training Celebrity Coaches" wouldn't be a bad idea at all..

In that case I'm holding out for Mayday Malone, Rick Vaughan, and Henry Rowengartner.
_My Names not Ry - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 09:48 PM EDT (#30019) #
what was the kid SI did a report on a number of years ago, could throw it something like 110, magazine came out on April 1, but dont remember the year, maybe he could be a coach since he career "foolishly" didnt succeed.
_Jobu - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 09:52 PM EDT (#30020) #
Are you thinking of someone who threw 110, or that Sidd Finch guy who threw like 180?
_Matthew E - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 09:53 PM EDT (#30021) #
I think you're thinking of Sidd Finch. You know it was just a joke, though, right?
_My Names not Ry - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 09:57 PM EDT (#30022) #
i thought 110 was low, ...WHAT DO YA MEAN A JOKE, an article written on april 1, a joke, nah...... Sidd Finch rocks! May have to change my name to my names not Sidd.

While we're talking about fictional gas, I heard the Flyin' Hawaiian was supposed to tickle 100 on the gun, yet he hasn't broken 96 yet. Is he just holding back or were people exagerating?
_Matthew E - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:01 PM EDT (#30024) #
The author of the Sidd Finch article also turned it into a novel, which I recommend.
_Tassle - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:03 PM EDT (#30025) #
OT:

If the Angels win the weekend series against the A's behind a very strong performance by Vlad Guererro, he wins the AL MVP. Agree or disagree?
_Tassle - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:04 PM EDT (#30026) #
And to clarify, I'm not asking if he should win the MVP, because nobody has the time for THAT conversation. Just if he will.
_CaramonLS - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:10 PM EDT (#30027) #
Jobu I wish I knew... those bastards on TSN/Snet should put RADAR gun listings in the corner like most ther American networks do!!
_Moffatt - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:12 PM EDT (#30028) #
I dunno, Sheff has been really solid this year. But Vladi has had one killer stretch run. It'd be a close vote.
_Braby - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:23 PM EDT (#30029) #
I'm pretty sure that Faulds said a couple times when League was pitching that he was up to 97.

I heard the Flyin' Hawaiian was supposed to tickle 100 on the gun

COMN for "FisherCat Fan" reporting that League threw 102 at the EL All-Star Game. Stadium guns are hardly accurate, even in the bigs, and I noticed the one in Rochester was 5-6 mph faster than the scout's gun.
If it's true, it's impressive.

**

My preliminary ballot for AL MVP (just 1-5):
1. Vlad Guerrero
2. Manny Ramirez
3. Melvin Mora
4. Johan Santana
5. Gary Sheffield

And the NL:
1. Barry Bonds
2. Barry Bonds
3. Barry Bonds
4. Barry Bonds
5. Barry Bonds

AL Cy Young:
Johan Santana

NL Cy Young:
Undecided

Rookies: Alex Rios and Jason Bay. I know, I'm biased.
_Rob - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:29 PM EDT (#30032) #
Oops, misread the question. :)

If the Angels win the weekend series against the A's behind a very strong performance by Vlad Guererro, he wins the AL MVP. Agree or disagree?

Yeah, probably. Especially if he hits a game-winning homer and gets a lot of RBIs.
_Jobu - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:33 PM EDT (#30033) #
Sure it's deceptive, but I think the Jays can catch the attention of casual fans over the off season if they add a few more clicks to the Hawaiian's pitches when he throws ;)
_G.T. - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:35 PM EDT (#30034) #
I dunno... I just don't get the Sheffield-for-MVP talk, personally. Sure his stats have been dragged down by a very mediocre September because of his shoulder problems, but shouldn't that count against him, anyways? If the Yankees were in a real race, he'd be letting them down right now.

Going by the numbers, Sheffield doesn't even seem to be the best hitter in the Yankee outfield. (Not sure why his higher OBP and SLG translate into a lower RC/27 than Matsui, I guess it's the SB/CS difference).

Vlad's been a much better hitter this year, as have Ramirez and Ortiz. Where are the Angels or Red Sox without them?

(Of course, I think Melvin Mora's been the best player in the AL this year, but he's obviously not going to win, since he's not really been that much better than the stars on the playoff contenders)
_G.T. - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:38 PM EDT (#30035) #
If the Angels win the weekend series against the A's

This comes up every year, but aren't most ballots submitted before the last game or two of the season are played, anyways? Losing in '87 didn't hurt Bell... winning (single-handedly) in '85 didn't help Brett, etc.
_Hootie - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:42 PM EDT (#30036) #
Anyone know about the Webster Award weekend? Who won what?
_greenfrog - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 10:43 PM EDT (#30037) #
Interesting...the Orioles have lost the right to negotiate with their first-round draft pick from 2004, Wade Townsend, when Townsend attended classes at Rice this fall. I suppose this will strengthen the available talent pool slightly in next year's draft.
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 11:10 PM EDT (#30038) #
My picks, for fun.

AL MVP:
Manny Ramirez

NL MVP:
Barry Bonds

AL Cy Young:
Johan Santana

NL Cy Young:
Randy Johnson

AL ROY:
:-

NL ROY:
Jason Bay

I REALLY don't know who to pick for AL ROY. Bobby Crosby's numbers aren't very good aside from HR, although I like his defense. No pitchers really stand out, although Madritsch and Duchscherer have good ERA's. It's really too bad that Lew Ford isn't eligible, because he'd be the consensus pick. Stupid Twins. Kevin Youkilis has good numbers, but only 200 AB's. Meh. Pretty crappy year, really.
_Fozzy - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 11:30 PM EDT (#30039) #
Meh, maybe this year for AL Rookie of the Year they'll just give anyone who is in their first season one of those purple 'participation' ribbons

and, in the words of Bobby Hill, "and a cape..."
_Jobu - Thursday, September 30 2004 @ 11:47 PM EDT (#30040) #
I miss that feeling of cockiness and confidence I felt when I looked ahead on the Jays schedule and saw Baltimore or Tampa Bay. There's only so many times I year I can say "Oh boy! Kansas City!"
robertdudek - Friday, October 01 2004 @ 03:23 AM EDT (#30041) #
For me AL rookie of the year is between Bobby Crosby and Zach Greinke.
