Ted Lilly's normal turn was to fall on the final day of the regular season. With the rainout, Ryan Glynn is now scheduled to get the last start for the Blue Jays, while Lilly makes the final start of an impressive season in Baltimore today.

Just to recap what I said yesterday, if anyone could let me know where I could find the jersey numbers of past Jay coaches, or could send me any interesting stories they recall about Jays and their numbers in the past, it would be a great help to a project I'm working on. Thanks all.

There was one year in the 1990s when the umpires were ordered to call the balk rule by the book, and balk numbers just exploded. Was it '99, or maybe before that? Anyway, just huge numbers of balks. I'd bet the record was during that year.

The Blue Jays are now tied with Texas for the most balks in baseball this year, with 11.

Anyway, found the balk records. Oakland in '88 holds the record with 76 balks. Dave Stewart had 16 that year, which is the individual record.

The Braves (then Milwaukee) had six balks in a game back on May 4, 1963. Starter Bob Shaw had five of those balks, including three in the third inning. The Braves lost 7-5 to the Cubs.

Ryan,

I remember Chris Michalak used to have balks called against him all the time when he was starting for the Jays; I think it was because of his pick-off move.

Doing a little research, found this on USAToday's website, in 2001:

"Michalak, meanwhile, is losing a war with umpires over his pickoff move.

In his opening 13 starts, Michalak picked off a league-high seven runners. Opponents claimed his move to first was a balk.

Apparently the umpires have been listening. Michalak has been called for balks in four of his last five starts."

And according to the BlueJays site, he ended up tied for the most ever by a lefty Jay, with 5. He tied Jimmy Key (1987), and was one behind Mark Eichorn (1988), who had 6.

He could have if he had finished the inning and the Jays had come right back to take the lead...

Can you imagine what you would do to the guy who called three balks in an inning on you? And Dave Stewart... I bet by the time Stewart was up to about 10 balks, he probably had the umps soiling themselves when they made a balk call on him.

- Adams is likely to be the everyday day SS next year
- Rios is an everyday player now
- Gross not so much. He sees Reed and Catalanatto playing LF to start next year.

IMHO (this is open to interpretation) it sounded to me like JP was hinting that they may be looking at acquiring a LF for next season. He was emphatic that "we need to get some guys in the lineup who will put up some numbers". That might mean Catalanatto of course.

JP says:

The "Batista as closer" experiment may turn out to not be an experiment at all. He likes what he's seen so far, Batista is feeling pretty comfortable, and acquiring a solid starter in the off-season will be alot easier than finding a solid reliever.

Which leads to discussion of next year's bullpen. Batista, Speier, Frasor, Miller, maybe League. Both Jerry and JP seemed to like to sound of that bullpen where everyone knows their role before the season even begins.

Austin Kearns went yard in the top of the 12th! Two-run jack off Jon Leicester and the Reds lead the Cubbies 4-2 in a game Chicago has to have.

Whoops! That's only 32 of 33 hitters. The other one was a foul bunt by Gil.

I have no idea whether this is true.

Neither do I, but JP believes it. I guess we find out.

We're talking Russ Adams, baby!

2-run homer by Kearns puts Reds on top of Cubbies (top of the 12th).

we = we'll

Oh yeah and add Ligtenberg to that bullpen. Forgot we still had him for another year.

Sounds like Miller and Chulk are done with the Jays after this season.

Rob -- Woodward actually started the double play, not Adams

Indeed it was. I'm used to Adams at SS now -- does that say more about me or the fact that Woody is basically done in Toronto?
_Magpie - Wednesday, September 29 2004 @ 05:54 PM EDT (#30351) #
Jimenez and Kearns do it to the Cubs again (they tied the game in the 9th) - now a Jimenez walk and a Kearns HR have the Reds up 4-2 going to the bottom of the 12th.

Santana is out after five innings with a 3-1 lead.

And Jason Frasor works out of a jam.

Let's get one here and go pound some Budweiser, or whatever the hell Joe Schultz used to say...

Cubs are trying. Patterson walks, Nomar reaches on a Valentine error. 1st and 3rd - oops. Moises GDP, run scores, two out.

No, don't walk the bases loaded with the winning run at third! Argh, why do teams do that?

Lopez pops out, but if Speier walks Palmeiro...

Sounds like JP might be making an offer to Palmero

Did he actually say that/hint at that, or are you speculating?

Just going on what others have said regarding JP's comments....

- Adams will be SS next season. Good. He's cheap and probably will outproduce anyone affordable on the free agent market. Now let's talk Bordick out of retirement to back up. :)

- BBatista at closer is not just an experiment anymore. Don't know if I agree with this. 4.75 million for a guy you HOPE will be a quality closer is a bit much.

- Gross not starting at LF. I don't see what else Gross can prove in AAA. He'll be 25 by opening day too, and he generally starts slow in every level he goes to. Don't know if I like this, especially if Catalanotto (aka glass man) is the LF.

- Need another starter. Good. Let's hope the starter is closer to Clement or Ortiz level instead of Sturtze and Loaiza level.

- The bullpen is set. Batista, Speier, League, Frasor, a lefty, and Kerosene looks decent on paper. Although I hope League starts the year in Syracuse to log as many innings as possible. You don't want to limit the guy at age 22 to relief, even if he could be a great one.

Well if injuries are your concern with Cat you can always call Gross up.

Scott, to relate: I wish Ron would stop attributing things, based on his assessment of what someone says (or does not say). I think the last thing that's needed is a batters box version of Marty York.

In the words of Joe Friday: Just the facts.

And no, he didn't say anything on Palmeiro, or on Chulk and Miller. He was merely complimenting Palmero for getting the job done at his age, and he didn't mention Chulk and Miller when talking about shopping for the 'pen. Maybe cause they aren't arbitration eligible, and don't have anywhere to go, or maybe cause they're going to be fighting for a job.

To say anything more than that here, especially to anyone not listening to the FAN, is to be rumour-mongering and unfair to everyone else.

Just my .02

No, I think this is backwards. If he can handle the majors, you want him learning in the majors. But you don't want him overloading a young arm. Let him pitch out of the pen, and keep his arm younger.

If anyone is phoning in questions for JP after the 2nd game(he said he would be on) could someone ask the following if possible:

(1) update on chances of new turf for Skydome next year

(2) update on status of Preston Patton - does he still expect to sign him eventually
_Prisoner of Ham - Wednesday, September 29 2004 @ 07:05 PM EDT (#30368) #
Did he actually say that/hint at that, or are you speculating?

Just to clear this up in this thread, JP making an offer to Palmeiro is pure speculation. He was just sounding very appreciative of a soon-to-be-fairly-cheap-and-free agent.

WTF are you talking about???

I never said anything about Palmeiro coming to the Jays.

I said it looked like Miller and Chulk might not be back next season because when JP was asked about his bullpen next season he left out those 2 names.
_Fozzy - Wednesday, September 29 2004 @ 11:30 PM EDT (#30370) #
I apologize Ron, I mistook your name for POH about Palmeiro.

But about Chulk and Miller, I'm pretty sure he was talking about what work needed to be done to the pen. What that means to me is that they were discussing players that needed to be signed, something Chulk and Miller don't fall under. Maybe he was just talking about sure bets for next year, and is planning on bringing in NRI and minor leaguers to fight out those last spots. It was, in my opinion, reading too deep into a passing comment by JP, whose mind is often not on the conversation at hand.

I still stand by my original comment though. A comment like "Sounds like Miller and Chulk are done with the Jays after this season" after someone asks what JP was talking about on the radio - without clarifying the context of the statement - really creates the illusion of authority.

Maybe if you said "Chulk and Miller weren't discussed when JP was speaking about possible bullpen plans next year; maybe they won't be around next season" would have been more helpful to those wondering and not listening, and more clear for people like me, who like to jump on others and bash them :)

But on the bigger picture, sorry for the mixup; my blogging skills have been taken down an entire notch.

What do people think about trading for Jose Guillen?
It looks like he might be out of Anahiem, so he won't cost much.
He's cheap, he does comes with baggage, but the guy can hit.
I just don't see JP gettting his 2 bats, a starter & 2 bullpen arms, unless the get guys like this.
