The Fisher Cats make it two straight. Shaun Marcum and Tom Mastny lose. Dunedin are toast and get to head out of town before Ivan moves in. New Hampshire and Charleston are the only clubs still playing.

Binghamton 4 New Hampshire 10 - New Hampshire lead best of five series 2-0

Detailed play by play coverage of the Fisher Cats game is available in yesterdays minor league thread as covered by the BBRC (Batters Box Radio Crew). The Cats scored three in the first with speed and power. Tyrell Godwin had an infield single, stole second and went to third on a groundout. Aaron Hill was hit by a pitch and a sac fly from John Ford Griffin put the Cats on the board. John Hattig drilled a monster two run home run to make it 3-0.

Brandon League was not at his sharpest but he was good enough. He went five innings and allowed two runs on three hits and three walks. New Hampshire added a fourth run in the fourth when a Godwin groundout scored Justin Singleton. New Hamsphire put it away with four runs in the fifth, Hill, Hattig and Jova singled and Singleton hit a two run triple. Paul Chiaffredo singled to drive in the fourth run of the inning. NH added two more in the sixth on a Griffin home run to make it a 10-2 game.

Ryan Houston, John Ogiltree and Dan Jackson pitched the last four innings.

Hill was 3-4 with a hit by pitch after an O-fer in game one.

Game Story

Tampa 8 Dunedin 4 - Tampa wins series 2-0

Dunedin scored two in the second on a Jose Yepez home run. Shaun Marcum breezed into the fourth when the wheels came off the wagon. Six of the first seven hitters reached base on six hits and a walk. Marcum left down 4-2 and Andy Torres allowed another run to score to make it 5-2. Marcum gave up seven hits and one walk in 3.1 innings.

The teams traded runs in the sixth and Tampa added a couple more in the ninth. Dunedin had seven hits in the game while Tampa beat up Jays pitching for fourteen hits.

Charleston 2 Hickory 8 - Hickory lead best of three series 1-0

It is tough to win a game when your hitters register three hits. Tom Mastny pitched with little support but uncharacteristically allowed five runs. Hickory scored one in the first inning when the first two hitters registered hits. They added another in the fourth when the first four hitters reached base. Mastny avoided further trouble with two strikeouts and a groundout to leave the bases loaded. Charleston scored in the fifth when Eric Arnold doubled in Clint Johnston who had walked. Hickory stretched their lead in the sixth. The first three hitters went double, single, single to make it a 3-1 game and Mastny was done. Eric Rico allowed a double to score two more and it was 5-1. Hickory added another in the seventh and two in the eighth off Jeremy Harper.

Eric Arnold had two of the Alley Cats three hits, and now Charleston have to win tonight to stay alive, Kurt Isenberg has the start.

I know it's the minor leagues, but two-game playoff series are ridiculous. Why not just have single-game playoffs, like in football? When you get down to a sample size that small, it would be equally silly. Their rapid exits from the playoffs should not take the shine off the excellent seasons posted by either Auburn or Dunedin; there is a lot of talent on those two clubs.
_MatO - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 10:35 AM EDT (#35892) #
Dunedin's offense went in the tank the last part of the season and wasn't helped by Tablado's suspension. Marcum's last few starts looked like he was worn down, being a reliever prior to this year.

Charleston simply doesn't have a lot of hitting talent.

A great day for Canadian baseball -- Jeff Francis has been named Minor-League Player of the Year by Baseball America (COMN). Congratulations, Jeff!
Craig B - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 03:07 PM EDT (#35895) #
Francis, of course, not only dominated both AA and AAA but was a key member of the Canadian Olympic baseball team that won the gold medal in Athens in an improbable win over Australia.

Oh, wait, that never happened, because DAN O'DOWD IS A GRADE A JACKASS.

The Francis article is interesting. I did not know that he studied physics at UBC.
_Rob - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 03:17 PM EDT (#35897) #
Physics at UBC? Wow, that's not some bogus degree or anything. That's pretty tough to get into, I think...

In other news, the Baseball Cube has added 2004 minor league season stats for Jeff Francis, Russ Adams, Eric Crozier, and every other minor leaguer, it seems.

Yes, even Scott Wiggins, who, after being traded in one of my favourite deals ever, sucked for Syracuse and found himself back in the Yankee organization, with the Trenton Thunder.

The Yanks just can't get enough of crappy minor leaguers.

Not sure if anyone's interested, but game 3 has started:

Hill got a two-out single up the middle, but John Ford Griffin followed it with a strike out to end the inning.

No wind tonight, and it's apparently a hitters park in Binghampton: 330 down the lines, 400 to straightaway center.

Chris Baker starts out with a strikeout of Lydon, Pagan flies out to center on a 91 mph fastball, and Acuna strikes out swinging to end the first.
Mike Green - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 07:18 PM EDT (#35900) #
I just turned on the game, so yes, 6-4-3, I'm interested. But, I'm the chef tonight, so no BBRadio until much later.

Just wanted to make sure that I wasn't posting to thin air.

Singleton takes a few pitches to go down 1 - 2, and swings and misses on the fourth pitch, as the Fisher Cats go down very quickly, too quickly to transcribe. Sorry 'bout that.
_6-4-3 - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 07:29 PM EDT (#35902) #
Brett Harper, the Mets' first baseman, leads off by taking a strike, whiffing on a fastball, gets a check-swing ball, and takes another big swing but misses for another strike out.

Baker has three K's in four outs.

Baker retires the next batter on a ground ball, bringing up the second baseman, Basak. Basak goes to 1 - 2, barely fouls off a ball, and then strikes out swinging on the 2-2 pitch.

Baker now has 4 K's in 2 innings.
_6-4-3 - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 07:36 PM EDT (#35903) #
Chiaffredo comes up, and he's been scorching hot against the Mets. He's hitting .571 in the series [4 for 7] and 14 / 39 against the Mets for the year, for a total average of .391 against the mets) hits a dribbler to second, the ball is charged by the Mets' second baseman and Chiaffredo is thrown out.

Snyder comes up, and gets caught looking on an 0 - 2 fastball.

Tyrell Godwin (hitting .100 the series, and the hit was an infield single yesterday) takes two curves for strikes, and then takes a 1-2 curveball, which glances the Mets' pitcher's leg, bounces over towards third, and Baldiris could not get the throw to first on time, so Godwin has another infield hit.

A 4-6 fielder's choice by Rich ends the inning.
_6-4-3 - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 07:45 PM EDT (#35904) #
Baldiris leads off for the Mets. The announcers mentioned that he hit .133 against the Fisher Cats during the regular season, and had a bad defensive lapse last night on a pop-up to third. He works the count to 3-2, and Baker walks him.

Hietpas tries to bunt ball one, and it goes foul. He then tries it again, and fails again. He then takes a fastball inside, then swings and misses on a 90 mile fastball.

The announces drift off for a while as Baker becomes preoccupied by Baldiris at first, ranting about not being able to see the bullpen (it's behind the leftfield fence), and the loundess of trains that are around the stadium.

Meanwhile, Velazquez hits a soft liner to the outfield, but it slices foul to make his count 1-2. He then grounds to Hill, who steps on second base and throws to first to get the 6-3 double play, ending the third inning with the score 0 - 0.
_6-4-3 - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 07:52 PM EDT (#35905) #
Aaron Hill leads off taking all the way to make the count 3-1, then hits a sharp grounder to Musser's left, but the pitcher makes an atheletic play and gets the out with a quick throw to first.

JFG then gets his first hit of the night, as the announcers mention he has a shocking 8 home run

Hattig hits a high fly to shallow center field for the second out, and Griffin nearly got doubled off wandering in between first and second.

Jova hits a sharp grounder to Velasquez, and he boots it as he tries to catch it and throw it in the same motion. Griffen advances to second, Jova is safe at first, and Singleton is up, 2 on, 2 outs.

Singleton takes two strikes, then hits a curve to second, the Mets second baseman makes a diving stop, then steps on second to end the threat.
_6-4-3 - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 08:02 PM EDT (#35906) #
Lydon misses on a change, then hits a chopper to the mound for the first out.

Pagan fouls a ball to go to 1 - 2, as the announcers mention that he almost played for the Mets when they had an injury, he even went to Shea for batting practice, but didn't get the call. He hits a sharp roller towards first, Baker fields it and lunges for Pagan, but he misses.

Baker is furious, and argues that Pagan left the basepath to avoid the tag, but the argument doesn't work and it's an infield single.

Acuna comes up hoping to get his first hit of the series. Baker makes three straight pick-off attempts before getting a fastball past Acuna. Baker tries to get the pick-off again, and fails. Baker gets the second strike on a change, misses with a fastball, misses again with a curve, and Acuna strikes out on the next pitch, for Baker's 6th strikeout of the night.

Pagan finally tries to steal second. Hill catches the ball in front of second, and makes the tag behind his body for the third out of the inning.

I echo Craig's sentiments 100%. Dan O'Dowd used to be a GM I liked to follow, as he was stuck in a situation no one knew how to suceed in, and he liked to make things really interesting by scrapping every plan he ever devised after four months of below average baseball. Now, he's just known as the guy who wouldn't let Francis play in the Olympics.
_fisher cats rad - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 08:29 PM EDT (#35909) #
Sorry about the tech problems tonight. It's 0-0, bottom of the 6th in Binghamton. Baker has allowed 2 hits.

Just to reiterate

August 24th: Olympic Baseball Semifinals

August 25th: Olympic Baseball Bronze and Gold Medal Games

August 26th: Jeff Francis makes his major league debut.

That extra start was well worth it, wasn't it? I'm sure in 5 years when Francis is already the best pitcher in Rockies history, he'll be talking about how that extra start, instead of starting on August 31st or September 2nd or something, turned him into the pitcher he is.
