Jays 1 - Angels 0

  1. Recaps:
    • Elliott Teaford:

        Blue Jays starter Justin Miller left 20 tickets for his former Little League teammates, six for family members, five for friends, "and everybody else was on their own" when he faced the Anaheim Angels on Wednesday.

        Miller's outing turned out to be a hotter ticket than anyone might have imagined, including the right-hander himself. He admitted not feeling all that great while warming up in the bullpen before the game.

        But he was nearly flawless while pitching a career-high eight innings and giving up two singles and one walk in the Blue Jays' 1-0 victory over Anaheim in front of a crowd of 36,905 at Angel Stadium.

    • Doug Miller:

        Normally, one run allowed in eight innings from a starting pitcher in the heat of a pennant race would bring on postgame fireworks and familiar strains of Kool and the Gang's "Celebration" in Angel Stadium following a huge win.

        Then again, this is 2004, the year in which Kelvim Escobar continues to show how good he is and his teammates continue to not score runs for him.

    • Mike Ganter:

        Miller, aided by a swing-happy Angels lineup, walked just one batter and allowed just two hits in a masterful eight-inning performance in a 1-0 shutout of the red-hot Angels last night in Anaheim.

    • AP:

        The Anaheim Angels had trouble believing this was the same Justin Miller they faced more than three months ago, when he hit three batters and gave up three consecutive home runs.

    • Geoff Baker:

        Despite striking out a career-high 12 batters in this one —pushing his season total to a career-high 162 — and lowering his earned-run average to 3.97, Escobar was stymied yet again by his offence's vanishing act.

        A crowd of 36,905 at Angel Stadium saw Toronto score the only run it would need in the opening frame when an Orlando Hudson grounder off the glove of diving second baseman Adam Kennedy was ruled a double. With two out, Escobar got Carlos Delgado to sky a pop-up to right field that Vladimir Guerrero lost sight of in the twilight.

        Kennedy raced back from his infield position to try to make the play, but couldn't get to the ball in time as it fell in for a run-scoring double.

  2. Fordin Notes (by Elliott Teaford) on Russ Adams, Kerry Ligtenberg, David Bush, and Josh Towers:

      The Blue Jays set their rotation for their weekend series against the Texas Rangers, and right-hander Josh Towers will miss another scheduled start because of a strained muscle near his shoulder blade.

      As he did last Sunday against the Oakland Athletics, right-hander Ryan Glynn will take Towers' spot in the rotation Saturday against the Rangers.

  3. Ganter Notes on Gustavo Chacin, Josh Towers, and Kerry Ligtenberg:

      Anaheim Angels team doctor Lewis Yocum examined Blue Jays reliever Kerry Ligtenberg on Tuesday and assured him he could do no further damage to his hip or knee by continuing to pitch.

      Ligtenberg, who believes the hip is the beginnings of an arthritic condition, has been hampered by the injury for much of the season.

  4. Tonight's 10:05PM EST start in Anaheim: LHP Ted Lilly (9-10, 4.05 ERA) vs. LHP Jarrod Washburn (11-5, 4.70 ERA). Read more in the game preview.

I don't have, nor am I planning to have, any offspring... However my girlfriend (well, fiancée, but I hate that word) is in grad school, so I can't wait until she graduates and gets a job. Two incomes would be nice.

Good show by Miller last night. Is it the start of something or just an isolated incident?

What? Richard Griffen doesn't stay up late to criticize J.P.?...
Didn't he know that J.P. was on BEFORE the game, so he could have just listened to that and "pan-fried" him over that!

To get this song, I was trying to hum it out. I guess I took too long deciding whether or not it was the Offspring, or Ob-la-di, Ob-la-da by the Beatles.

I really hope it's a sign of things to come. For a while I've been saying, "I can't wait to see what Miller can do when he's healthy". Unfortunately, he never seems to be healthy.

Unfortunately, the doctor could give no assurance as to the damage Kerry is likely to do to his team by continuing to pitch.

Good work identifying the song as Why Don't You Get a Job by The Offspring. In the spirit of the song title, you win 100 million points and a picture of Archie Bunker:

I went to look up Escobar's stats for the season (and realized if I had read further I would have seen them in the Baker tease) and when I was looking at them saw that Colon has given up 35! HRs this season. Wow.

Fanball had this to say about Miller's outstanding game:

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut every once in a while. This was a rare performance from the heavily tattooed Miller. Don't expect more outings like this.

Wow. Pretty harsh and even more uninformed...of course one can't expect a pitcher with filthy stuff who is just finally recovering from injury to actually improve and pitch like this again, afer all he has tatoos. Duh.

1.roy 2.Lilly 3.batista 4.bush .5.towers or miller or Chacin (if he is ready to start in the majors)

Is anyone else looking at Escobar's numbers this year and cringing at the fact that we have Miguel Batista instead? Maybe it's just me.

Miller's first half numbers before injury were showing signs of major improvement. Since coming back he's been garbage. One start isn't something to get excited about, but at least it's a start.
_R Billie - Thursday, September 09 2004 @ 02:13 PM EDT (#36128) #
Had the Jays extended Escobar three years at $15 million I think they would have done very well.

However they were able to pay both Lilly and Batista less than what Kelvim will earn this year. So whatever you think of Batista, he's pitched a lot of innings and provided a lot of quality starts (along with some awful ones). I think Miguel will do better his second time around the league as he knows the hitters better and his strikeout and walk rates have historically been better. He's been battling a back condition also which is probably affecting his command.

If the Jays had another $5 to $6 million in the 2004 budget though I would have taken Kelvim back in a heartbeat.

First game of a doubleheader, the Royals lead the Tigers 24 to 3 in the sixth inning. It was 17-3 after 3 frames.
_braden - Thursday, September 09 2004 @ 02:22 PM EDT (#36131) #
Of note in the Royals/Tigers game:

Angel Berroa is a 2B away from the cycle.
Joe Randa is 5-5.
Ruben Gotay is 0-4 and without an RBI. The only Royal without either.

Lino Urdaneta made his ML debut for the Tigers. Here's his line:

0.0IP 5H 6ER 1BB

Career ERA is infinite.

Is anyone else looking at Escobar's numbers this year and cringing at the fact that we have Miguel Batista instead? Maybe it's just me.

Not really. Once you take park, etc. into their numbers they're not all that different, and Batista is cheaper.

VORP:
Batista = 31.4
Escobar = 44.1

SNWAR:
Batista = 2.3
Escobar = 1.0

Depending on which Prospectus author you believe, Batista may or may not have been more valuable than Escobar. I'd give the nod to Escobar, but there isn't a huge difference between the two.
_Moffatt - Thursday, September 09 2004 @ 02:24 PM EDT (#36133) #

Joe Randa scored 6 runs himself.

Five teams within two games.

But you're right: I wish Anaheim wins the WC, so Boston and NY have a real race.

I see what you mean, but I can't get excited about the NL race. I probably will get more so in the final week or two, but right now it's just a bunch of good, but not great, teams battling it out.

The AL East race, however, could have been HUGE. 1978 or 1987 *huge*. But now it won't be.

I dislike the fact that the Wild Card team starts off on the same footing as a team that won the division. I'm still a big supporter of 2 wild card teams in each league that challenge for one playoff spot in a one-game winner takes all match. That'd make the pennant races far more exciting, as winning your division would mean a whole lot more.

Absolutely... a close race, many teams, and throw in an amazing comeback into the race by the seemingly-deceased Astros the last 2 weeks.

I do like the idea of 2 wildcard teams playing off for 1 spot in the league semifinals/division series/whatever you want to call them, though. That's a good one (so of course it'll never happen).

Larry Bowa: "If you're just looking at statistics," Phillies manager Larry Bowa said, "there's no question [Johnson's the best pitcher], but [he has a losing record.]"

How the hell does this even make sense? It's like saying "Well, I like computers, but IBM's are better"

People need to get it through their head that WINS IS A STAT. And a terrible one, too. I wish I could freeze myself like Fry in Futurama and be unfrozen when the stat isn't even tracked anymore. That is my fantasy. I hate the win/loss stat more than I hate the Red Sox. And the Avalanche. I hate it more than I hate Jared from the Subway ads and that jackass from the Wendy's commercials.

They could do no wrong on Gordon, it's true.

I was quite surprised the group survived, and perhaps even thrived (especiall if one equates "thrived" with "had success in the U.S.", which I don't, but I digress), after their horrible Gordon follow-up "Maybe You Should Drive" -- one of the worst albums I've ever had the misfortune to purchase (after assuming it would be better than its first single).

I think there were probably some drug/alcohol issues, as well as a bit of the big-ego thing happening after the success of Gordon. I believe they fired their manager after "Maybe You Should Drive", even after he allegedly begged them not to release it without improving it first.
