There were no thrilling photo-finishes to dramatically alter the final standings in the Alomar division. While the regular season title is satisfying, Walrus management is well aware that we haven’t won anything that really counts yet. No matter how good any team has been so far, a considerable degree of luck is required in Head-to-Head playoffs.

Congratulations to Gwyn Price, whose Mebion Glyndwr earned the other first-round bye. In this week’s championship bracket quarter-finals, third-place AGF takes on the sixth-place Red Mosquitos for the right to knock me out of the semis, and the fourth-seeded Gashouse Gorillas do battle with fifth-seeded Chatsworth Halos, with the winner to face Gwyn’s squad.

The defending champion Austin Senators did everything in their power this week to earn a chance to repeat, mashing K-Town 11-1, but fell short of cracking the top six and will have to settle for a bye in the consolation round, along with Hannibal’s Cannibals. The Sens will face the winner of the Horse Field Hammers-Eastern Shore Birds matchup, while the Baird Brain vs. SABR Magicians survivor will risk being devoured.

To the Barfield owners whose success has earned them 2005 promotions, well done! Tough luck all season doomed Jick’s Rays to relegation, along with the Isotopes and Mashers. I don't know of any other league that has this feature, which is sure to keep things interesting for years to come. As an aside, I think every owner in Alomar and Barfield should, after the playoffs are concluded but before the offseason moves begin, confirm their intention to return next year. When we added the second division, we made plans for the transitions, but I'm not sure if we considered the priority list for taking over any teams that may be abandoned.

This past week, Carlos Delgado and Curt Schilling played like the superstars they are. Please, guys, keep it up for one more month. In a season when three of my five keepers disappointed much of the time, Billy Wagner is off the DL just in time and even Raffy Palmeiro may have woken up. Mostly, I've relied on a win-win trade with Commissioner Moffatt — kudos on a terrific job, Mike; I will always be grateful — and my remarkably astute draft picks (or dumb luck, depending on your point of view) in the 19th through 24th rounds: Johnny Estrada, Carlos Silva, Royce Clayton, Matt Lawton, Jason Marquis and Ronnie Belliard. Without them, it would have been a struggle to play .500 ball. A few timely and/or fortunate FA pickups helped too. There's no denying that my 40-6-2 record against the bottom two clubs had a lot to do with the margin of victory, but I'm pleased with my team's consistency — we won 16 weeks and tied twice, compared to just four losses, three of which were consecutive in a midseason slump.

Going into the playoffs, I’d prefer some MI depth and one more pitcher as Freddy Garcia insurance, but I don’t think any owner is totally satisfied with his team. I'm also as likely as anyone, if not more so, to shoot myself in the foot by micromanaging my staff. For example, I have one starter (Redman) who has been terrible at home, another (Lima) who has been poor on the road. If I ignore those trends and they have awful outings, I'll beat myself up. If I sit them and they do reasonably well, that could cost me IP, W, maybe even the coveted jersey. Ultimately, after a certain amount of anguish, I'll do what I always do — try to stay informed, and trust my instincts.

It's been a great year. I’m making no predictions, and wish everyone the best of luck.

Congratulations Coach on a great season, a 12.5 game lead in a league this competitive is a hell of a result. Thanks to Commissar Moffat and to Scott Lucas for the brilliant weekly stat reports.
I'm very happy (and almost as surprised) to have made the playoffs for a second year in a row. The way my boys have been spluttering the last few weeks though, I may be in line for the Billy Beane 'my **** doesn't work in the playoffs' award.

Congrats to Slippery Pete, Ghost Man on Third, and Homer Jays Simpsons for your promotion to Alomar. I'm see you there in 2006!

I found it odd that the top 3 in the regular season get promoted to Alomar and the playoffs have no bearing on promotions.

I understand that the regular season is a better indicator of the superior teams, but if that's the case why even have a playoff if they're going to be relatively meaningless?

Said another way, I'd rather finish in the top 3 and get promoted rather than finish 5th and win the championship.

Perhaps a good alternative is to give the 2 teams with byes a promotion, and the winner of the championship also gets promoted (and if one of the top two win then take the 3rd place regular season team).

Just something to consider that I think would enhance the Barfield (and Carter?) league.

Please forgive me for the oversight, Scott, and add my thanks for your awesome work on the league Web site and the stats.

Pistol, I really like your suggestion. It would be extremely disappointing for any of the #4-6 teams in Barfield to win the postseason but not get promoted.

At the risk of alienating those in the Leftovers league and on the waiting list, I'm not so sure about expanding to a Carter division, at least not right away. BBFL is young and evolving, but we still haven't worked out all the "bugs" in the two-league format, so I'm in favour of slower, more gradual changes. However, it's not up to me, it's a democracy, so Alomar and Barfield owners will decide at the Winter Meetings.

Well it's not a good feeling for the Bashers. To go from second overall to fighting to avoid relagation is humbling but also a good lesson about trying to build your staff around Mike Mussina. Well not really, I don't know what it's a good lesson about except that the game of baseball is highly unpredictable.

Now I face a difficult off-season in which I have to decide whether to keep or trade a potentially fearsome front two of Martinez and Prior. Starting pitching and innings really collasped for me this year, just about all at the same time around mid-season. Both pitchers are undoubtedly great but it's hard to turn your back on quality offence. But whether I keep them or not I'll have to end up with more veteran pitching next season.

I think I'll stick to my offensive load theory but make sure I end up with a lot more veteran pitching depth next year. In the end it was building more than half my starting staff from near rookies in the late rounds that hurt me as Mussina's unprecedented collapse threatened to send me to the basement. Giambi's tumor/parasite situation was also a problem.

_AGF - Monday, September 06 2004 @ 01:51 PM EDT (#35867) #
I never found an RBI man for AGF in a trade, but somehow the team made it to its first playoffs. I guess a bunch of fairly mediocre and alike players (Hatteberg, Patterson, M. Giles, Matsui, Mueller, Lo Duca, Tucker, Alfonzo, Conine) and some stud pitchers (Rivera, Randy and for a time Mulder and Harden) were enough.

In any event, I just noticed that StatTracker has me playing Hannibals Cannibals and not the Mosquitos. Does StatTracker's **** not work in the playoffs?

In any case, thanks to the commissioner as well as Lucas and everyone else for contributing to a great league.
Coach - Monday, September 06 2004 @ 08:42 PM EDT (#35870) #
Cristian, that's some rotten luck, especially Izzy's meltdown. Some of Yahoo's decisions are hard to understand, but unless and until we go to another stat service, we're at their mercy. In addition to the tiebreakers, the one that baffles me is why wins and saves are wiped out when a team doesn't reach the minimum IP for the week.

What's up with the matchups and StatTracker? Instead of a bye, Yahoo has me "playing" the 13th-place team. Is that just messed up in Alomar, or are there similarly odd pairings in the other divisions?
Thomas - Monday, September 06 2004 @ 08:44 PM EDT (#35871) #
What happened to the Moscow Rats in the second half?
_Homer Jay Simps - Monday, September 06 2004 @ 09:43 PM EDT (#35872) #
The Simpsons are happy Yahoo has crazy tie breakers. It was an amazing season. Coming from a .500 team at the mid way point to a #3 team in the final standings.

Decepticons, I feel you pain. Hey that's how the cookie crumbles. Wish both of us can advance.

Does anybody know how the keepers will work for the advancing teams to the Alomar division?
_snellville jone - Monday, September 06 2004 @ 10:08 PM EDT (#35873) #
The only other head-to-head league I'm in is assigning the correct playoff match-ups. I don't know what's going on in Alomar; I assumed it would clear up later in the day, but it never did. Worst case scenario would be matching up the totals at the end of the week and keeping up with the brackets, I suppose.
Lucas - Monday, September 06 2004 @ 10:15 PM EDT (#35874) #
In Alomar, the main page is showing the correct matchups but Stattracker still is incorrect. Barfield has the wrong matchups on the main page but is correct in Stattracker.

I assume it'll correct itself eventually.
Craig B - Monday, September 06 2004 @ 11:16 PM EDT (#35875) #
Decepticons, I feel you pain. Hey that's how the cookie crumbles. Wish both of us can advance.

Well, I would think that if someone drops out of Alomar, the Decepticons will be the #1 team on the waiting list. Is that not fair? So Cristian still has a shot at going up...

Also, the possibility of instituting Carter was mentioned. I would be quite pleased to see a Carter division next season - we may as well open this up, since there were apparently 16 teams who participated actively in the Leftovers, with (undoubtedly) more Bauxites to come. We'll see how interest is next spring, but I'm betting we'll get 60 entries no problem.

It was a stirring fight to the finish for the Anarchist Archivists, but we failed to crack the Barfield consolation playoffs thanks to a tough 7-5 loss to Pistol Nine and a fine last week by the Freddy Beach Fracas. We'll have team MVP Mark Loretta back next year to continue fighting the good fight, along with Gary Sheffield and a number of other hitters.
Lucas - Monday, September 06 2004 @ 11:51 PM EDT (#35876) #
Oh my. Hitting the refresh key repeatedly on the Yahoo BBFL page switches this week's matchups back and forth between the proper playoff matchups and the incorrect "everyone plays" matchups.

Try it. It's fun.
Gitz - Tuesday, September 07 2004 @ 02:02 AM EDT (#35877) #
Fourth in roto, 14th in the official standings (Barfield Division). For my first attempt at H2H, I must confess to being less than enthused about the format.

Not that I'm a quitter, but for next year I have volunteered to give my team to somebody who contacted me via e-mail. To anyone who has "authority" over these matters . . . is that OK?
Craig B - Tuesday, September 07 2004 @ 08:34 AM EDT (#35878) #
for next year I have volunteered to give my team to somebody who contacted me via e-mail. To anyone who has "authority" over these matters . . . is that OK?

I'll talk to Commissioner Mike about it. My first-blush answer is that this is "not on", but he may decide it's OK...
_AGF - Tuesday, September 07 2004 @ 10:13 AM EDT (#35879) #
What a great start to the playoffs for my inexperienced playoff team:

Collective line after Monday's games

2 for 26 w/ 2 R, 1 RBI, 0 SB

9.00 ERA, 1.88 WHIP and 1.38 K/BB

I guess I am just giving the Mosquitos a head start...
_NIck - Tuesday, September 07 2004 @ 12:58 PM EDT (#35880) #
Ok, so can someone explain what I did wrong in the Leftovers league? By the Roto staindings I was 3rd, but finished 13th? Was it just bad luck?
_6-4-3 - Tuesday, September 07 2004 @ 12:58 PM EDT (#35881) #
Is there an actual waiting list that you can get on? I'd like to get in on the fun next year, but it sounds like I'd find a shorter line at the Toronto birth certificate office.
_NIck - Tuesday, September 07 2004 @ 01:03 PM EDT (#35882) #
For the Carter division, can current Leftovers members get some kind of priority?
Coach - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 12:52 PM EDT (#35884) #
I'm not complaining about the bye, but it's boring on the sidelines. I've been advance scouting the Chatsworth-Gashouse series (things are going much better for the Halos than their AL West namesakes this week) and alternating between being glad when Craig Monroe homers in both halves of a doubleheader and wishing he would have saved that power for next week. Even though their stats don't matter, I was immensely relieved at the timely and effective returns of Freddy Garcia and Billy Wagner.

What happened to the Moscow Rats in the second half?

Darned if I know, Thomas. They were the only team to beat me, they just had problems with everyone else. :)

Does anybody know how the keepers will work for the advancing teams to the Alomar division?

Homer Jay, I think you guys draft new rosters from among the relegated Alomar teams. Obviously, you can't "call up" players from your Barfield rosters; you're basically starting from scratch. It's not as bad as it might sound -- there are about four shortstops available who are better than any of my middle infielders, along with some excellent OF and respectable pitching. Maybe those teams didn't have as much depth as others, but there's no lack of stars.

Then we have the offseason trading window, so you don't have to declare keepers until a week before the draft. I will always make a 2-for-1 or 3-for-2 deal, if I get the guy(s) I want in return. So packages including Delgado, Schilling, Wagner, Garcia and Estrada will be available. My only untouchables are Thome and Abreu, because of all those enjoyable innings when Bobby singles, steals second and Big Jim cashes him in. Collecting teammates who bat 3-4 works.
Pistol - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 02:31 PM EDT (#35886) #
I just did a little homework and discovered that keepers aren't drafted by the promoted/relegated teams, but rather assigned based on order of finish. It is my understanding that the 1st place Barfield finisher swaps with the 18th place Alomar team (and 2/19, 3/20). As such I think it would be useful for the relevant six managers to obtain a list of their new rosters sometime soon.

So if I read that correctly the teams going from Alomar to Barfield get to protect players from the teams that were promoted? That seems like a good deal.
Coach - Friday, September 10 2004 @ 04:26 PM EDT (#35888) #
My mistake, David. Thanks for the correction. Maybe I remembered voting for (e) but forgot that it didn't pass. I also liked (d) -- I'm in another league where if a team is abandoned for any reason, existing owners get the option of taking it over before anyone new is invited.

I've been advance scouting the Chatsworth-Gashouse series (things are going much better for the Halos than their AL West namesakes this week)

It's easy for things to go well when the other team is stinking things up to high heaven. Wednesday alone saw my team go 2 for 35 and Hudson give up 7 runs in all of 3 innings of work. Great. Grand. Wonderful.
