Walking hitters has been a problem for Jay pitchers all season. Yesterday's game was, sad to say, not the low point of the season in this regard. Today, they face the A's red-hot Canadian pitcher Rich Harden. The much-travelled Ryan Glynn starts for the Jays. Glynn has pitched well for Syracuse particularly in the second half of the season. If he throws strikes, he'll be fine. Easier said than done. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got a call to take on my shoe phone.

Too many Get Smart references to let that one slide :-)

WOOHOO!!!

Russ Adams at short and leading off
Guillermo Quiroz behind the plate and batting 9th!

If only Crozier could have started at DH instead of Menechino. Oh well, 2 out of 3 ain't bad.

Does anyone know the starting lineups?
Coach - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:07 PM EDT (#36782) #
If only Crozier could have started at DH instead of Menechino.

I have a theory. (I always have a theory; sometimes they're even correct.)

As Spencer Fordin pointed out in his latest Notes, hitting coach Mike Barnett is already quite familiar with Adams and Quiroz, and has done only some minor tweaking with Q's swing, reminding him of what he was doing so well in spring training. However, Barney's never seen Crozier before, so they may be working together on a number of things in the cage before Eric gets more AB.

I'm more interested in seeing Crozier's glove than his bat. If he's solid at first base and adequate in a corner OF spot, that will help him earn a job next year. There's absolutely no doubt in my mind that he's a better hitter than Pond, Clark, Berg and some of the other guys who have taken turns as the 25th man. I also think he's still on the improving phase of his career, with more power still to emerge.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:11 PM EDT (#36783) #
Thanks for the input Coach, that would make sense. I too feel that Crozier has some potential to improve, although I think the Jays should hold their breath if their thinking of using him as one of Delgado's primary replacements.

What's up with Guillermo Quiroz? Everytime he throws the ball back to Glynn he seems to have a nervous tick or something that makes his head bob back and forth.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:13 PM EDT (#36784) #
Glynn gets absolutly shafted on a dandy curve on a 2-2 pitch to Chavez. What's up with all the spazzes behind the plate this series?

I like Glynn. He works fast and seems to be able to get the ball over for strikes when he wants to. He's done a bit of nibbling so far, but that should decrease throughout the game once he gets a feel for the A's hitters. Good 1st inning for Ryan.
Coach - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:13 PM EDT (#36785) #
There's a lot of elbow action in Glynn's delivery, but he works fast and everything was in the vicinity of the strike sone. Even when he fell behind McLemore 3-0, they were all tantalizing, and Ryan battled back to retire him. The 1-1 to Chavez was one of those "callup doesn't get the close ones" pitches, and the backdoor curve on 2-2 was an absolute robbery. Struck him out anyway; nice job. I hope the zone is as tight for Harden.
Coach - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:14 PM EDT (#36786) #
Dave, you're channelling me...
Coach - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:17 PM EDT (#36787) #
Nothing wrong with Adams' eye; I wish all hitters would watch every pitch right into the glove.

Yesterday, the A's put on a how-not-to-run-the-bases clinic. Today, they are working on defence.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:18 PM EDT (#36788) #
LOL Coach, I'm glad I could finally get on your good side :)

How's about that? A Gold Glove 3rd basemen and "The Pickin' Machine" make errors on consecutive plays! Routine plays I might add, although the grounder to Hatteberg might have had some extra "English" on it.

And Coach, the zone for Harden has been just as tight as it was for Glynn. Apparently, this ump doesn't believe in the outside corner.
Coach - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:20 PM EDT (#36789) #
There were actually three errors during the one at-bat; Chavez dropped the easiest of popups, Hatteberg booted a routine grounder, and Harden gets one of my unofficial E-10's for not covering first.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:22 PM EDT (#36790) #
I'm watching the game on DirecTV, so it's the A's broadcast.

Apparently the anthem singer butchered not only the Canadian National Anthem but the American one as well. Hopefully someone from Da Box that went to the game can give us a report on how bad the guy actually was, because the A's announcers were just letting him have it!
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:30 PM EDT (#36791) #
Beautiful 1-2 pitch by Glynn. He saw that Byrnes was simply going the other way with his outside offerings, and he knows the ump isn't giving much of an outside corner (as seen as the perfect 0-1 pitch to Melhuse) so he comes inside to Byrnes and absolutly freezes him with a picture perfect fastball.

2nd and 3rd, 2 outs. Come on Ryan!
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:33 PM EDT (#36792) #
Yankees struggles continuing. Already down 3-1 in the 1st after Palmeiro jacks his 16th dinger of the year.

Javier Vazquez has looked bad in his last few outings. Last time out against Cleveland he only lasted 1.1 IP in the monumental 22-0 loss and he's already allowed 3 ER today. Nothing better than watching the Yankees struggle... except for maybe seeing Boston struggle.
Coach - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:33 PM EDT (#36793) #
Man, that was a great 1-2 pitch to Vernon, who thought it was a knee-high fastball, then was helpless when he realized it was the tight deuce. Carlos continues to see the ball very well; he took an off-Windows rip at a heater and didn't miss by much, but popped it up.

With two on and none out, Glynn gets a K, a bouncer and a foul pop -- pretty good pitching.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:35 PM EDT (#36794) #
Coach, that was a nasty pitch to Wells to get him to swing helplessly. But are you sure it was a deuce? It registered at 86 MPH on the gun, and if it was a curve that's pretty impressive. Methinks it was probably a tight splitter.

Still, point is it was a nasty pitch.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:39 PM EDT (#36795) #
Looks like the Jays have a rally brewing. Bases loaded, 0 out with Gabe up at the dish. Harden's a tough pitcher, especially as of late, so any runs will be appreciated.

I should mention, a good piece of hitting by all 3 of the men on base (Rios, Hinske, Menechino) and some good baserunning by Rios in initially breaking back to the bag on a ball that Crosby NEARLY caught.

Force out on a slow roller by Gross makes it 1-0 Jays! COME ON GQ!!
Coach - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:40 PM EDT (#36796) #
Yeah, I'm pretty sure, Dave. I know it appeared to go straight down, but a splitter is all backspin and that thing looked like it was tumbling to me. Whatever, it looked like 95 and straight until the last 15 feet.

Jays in flight 1-0; that would have been a Gross GIDP if it hadn't gone off the end of the bat. Good break.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:41 PM EDT (#36797) #
Darn, bad luck right there. GQ stings a ball, but right at Crosby who makes a pretty nice play in catching the ball before it short-hopped of the turf.

Good rip though, hopefully Adams can come through.
_Scott Levy - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:43 PM EDT (#36798) #
RBI single by Russ Adams. Nice.
Coach - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:43 PM EDT (#36799) #
Adams was taking all the way on a get-ahead fastball, then just a hair late on the 1-1 down the middle. He didn't miss with the next swing. As I first noticed in 2003 spring training, he has very "conscious" at-bats. Kudos on the clutch 2-out RBI, Russ.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:44 PM EDT (#36800) #
Excellent piece of hitting by Russ Adams right there, gets the Jays another run. (2-0)

In his first career AB against Dotel, Dotel stayed away from him and he laced a single into left. Today, Harden has been pounding him in, and he laces a single in between 1st and 2nd.

Russ Adams definitely looks like a "professional hitter" and it should be fun to follow his development in the bigs.
_Caino - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:50 PM EDT (#36801) #
Excellent piece of hitting by Russ Adams right there, gets the Jays another run. (2-0)

I know eh. I know it's a small sample size. but it looks like this guy was made to get on base...
_Magpie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:50 PM EDT (#36802) #
The anthems were indescribably bad.

He started out "Oh say can you see" and seemed to suddenly realize that if he stayed in that key he's never hit half the notes.

When he came to "and the rockets red glare" he did another glaring key change.

As for "O Canada", after about two lines he seemed to suddenly feel that another, different melody would be even better. The crowd was actually getting restless and bewildered. He then returned to the tune we're all familiar with for the last couple of lines.

Much to everyone's relief.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:53 PM EDT (#36803) #
Magpie, who was it that sang the anthem?

I remember me and a few buds went to Shea Stadium last year to check out a Mets/Expos game and there was a guy singing both the anthems and he was awful. He started off behind home plate like most anthem singers, but as HE (notice he, not the crowd) got more enthused he started moving around more and I believe he even made his way on top of the Mets dugout!

So if you have the guy's name, who knows, maybe it's the same guy. All I can remember about this guy was that he was an African American gentlemen with gray hair and glasses I believe.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 01:58 PM EDT (#36804) #
Good job of fighting off a tough 2-1 fastball up and in by Wells for a bloop single.

I'm still anxious to see a few balls get hit to Adams at short, I want to see his footwork, arm, range, etc.

And NO DOUBT ABOUT THAT ONE, Delgado crushes one into the second level in right center.

4-0 Jays!
_R Billie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:00 PM EDT (#36805) #
Adams and Quiroz both look very relaxed and focused at the plate. Quiroz had a linedrive out today and his last game he hit a ball hard to the outfield which ended up an out. He looks strong and more importantly he seems content to wait for a good pitch to drive. Adams doesn't have much power yet but he hits the ball firmly on the line and his body still has room for growth. What he currently lacks in power he makes up for in the ability to simply get the bat on the ball as well as a good eye at the plate.

Ryan Glynn shows average stuff and not great control but just enough to get by. He's got some nice sink on his fastball and has been helped out greatly by two strikeouts of Chavez today who isn't seeing him well. He fits the back of the rotation starter profile.
_Scott Levy - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:01 PM EDT (#36806) #
26 HR and 80 RBI by Carlos. Only 4/20 to go to reach 30/100 for the 7th straight year.
_Magpie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:06 PM EDT (#36807) #
Our game notes say "Cliff Liberty" but the Jumbotron said "Cliff Allan." He was holding a cowboy hat. Its possible that he does this professionally.

Gulp.

My. Ryan Glynn is lucky to be alive
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:07 PM EDT (#36808) #
Goodness that was close to nailing Glynn right square in the head, Thank God it didn't.

Anytime anything like that happens I can't help but remember watching Bryce Florie, then pitching for the Red Sox, getting nailed square in the FACE by a line drive off the bat of a New York Yankee whose name has slipped my mind. Florie had blood coming out of everywhere and was never the same after that. A horrible sight.

Nice pitch to get Melhuse, 2 away in the 4th.
_R Billie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:10 PM EDT (#36809) #
Glynn left a slider belt high over the heart of the plate and Crosby didn't have much trouble with that. Two run shot to make it 4-2. Glynn follows up with a four pitch walk to Swisher.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:10 PM EDT (#36810) #
Wow, Bobby Crosby got all of that one. When Bobby Crosby is on, he hits the ball as hard as anyone (well, except for maybe Carlos)

4-2 Jays with a man on and 2 out.
Coach - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:12 PM EDT (#36811) #
Guys, I'm taking the rest of the day off. The mother of a good friend, who has been part of the Box community for quite a while and part of my life much longer, passed away last night. Receiving that news a few minutes ago put the ball game into perspective. I don't mean to diminish anyone else's enjoyment, but I'm no longer in a chatty mood.
_R Billie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:18 PM EDT (#36812) #
I could be wrong but Russ hasn't been in on a single defensive play yet I think. He's already taking his third at bat here in the fourth and is ahead 3-0 on the count. Hits a 3-1 pitch hard right at McLemore who can't handle it and Adams just beats the throw reaching for the second time on an error.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:20 PM EDT (#36813) #
Sorry to hear about that Coach, I send my condolences.

Good job of running hard out of the box by Adams, as he reaches via error for the second time today. It's very easy, as a rookie, to take a play like that forgranted but he was "busting it" the whole time and beat it out.
_StephenT - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:37 PM EDT (#36814) #
Good work by Gibbons, not removing Glynn mid-inning after he loaded the bases with 1 out.
_R Billie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:37 PM EDT (#36815) #
Glynn escapes a big jam in the 5th and continues to lead 4-2. That's going to be the end of his day though as he's already thrown over 100 pitches with the four walks and two hit batters to go along with 5 strikeouts. The Jays bats have to stay awake and the relievers will have to carry the team for four innings.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:40 PM EDT (#36816) #
Atleast Speier is available today, but the rest of the pen remains a question mark unless Gibbons goes to Chulk/Frasor again.

Agree 100% R Billie, the bats must not fall asleep because it's wishful thinking to think the A's will just stop at 2 runs.
_Magpie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:49 PM EDT (#36817) #
Sorry to hear it, coach.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:49 PM EDT (#36818) #
Sacks jacked for Gross once again. Let's see if the Jays can finally put one away and not let the A's hang in there.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:51 PM EDT (#36819) #
OUCH!!

Duscherer left a hanger out there with 2 strikes and Gross takes it deep for a grand slam, his first of his career!
_R Billie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:53 PM EDT (#36820) #
Jays Gross four runs on that pitch. There's some of that unlocked raw power. A grand slam into the second deck off a hanging breaking ball.
_Magpie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:53 PM EDT (#36821) #
Duchscherer throws Gross a mediocre off-speed pitch; Gross is a little out in front but he absolutely riups into the seats foul.

So he throws him another one? I don't get it, but Gross don't mind.

Hey! The kids are all right!
_R Billie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:54 PM EDT (#36822) #
And how about a second deck shot from Russ Adams for good measure? Quick turn on an inside fastball and that's his first major league homer.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 02:54 PM EDT (#36823) #
RUSS ADAMS IS THE MAN!!!

First career ML homerun for Russ Adams.

Who said he doesn't have man strength!?!?

This is a joy to watch. After suffering through the days of Woodward and Cash and all the other guys that couldn't hit a lick, finally a glimpse of the future.

10-2 Jays

Five shaky IP from Glynn, but he held it together. Only one ground ball (to Delgado) - it was all pops and flies.

The 5 Ks in 5 IP was encouraging. His first time thru the MLs he had trouble striking people out.

Another guys hits his first dinger.
_R Billie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 03:01 PM EDT (#36827) #
Wow, there's some major league man strength from Nick Swisher. This guy is looking like a tremendous player with plenty of power to go with a very sharp eye. Hit the low and away fastball out to centerfield for a two run shot.

Sean Douglass may not make it out of this inning as he gives up another hit and Frederick starts warming up. Jays leading 10-4 now. McLemore flies out to left for the first out of the inning.
_R Billie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 03:05 PM EDT (#36828) #
Douglass walks Chavez and Gibbons has to come get him. That kind of hurts as you would hope Douglass could have provided two or even three innings with an 8 run lead but after seeing the last two games the Jays aren't about to take chances.

The bats shouldn't fall asleep quite yet.
_DaveInNYC - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 03:07 PM EDT (#36829) #
Finally a grounder to Adams and he starts up an inning ending double play. Good job of getting to it up the middle and a nice flip to the O-Dog who made a solid throw with the runner bearing into him.

Good job Frederick.
_R Billie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 03:07 PM EDT (#36830) #
I think that was Adams' first play of the day and it was a nice feed to Hudson who turns the inning ending double play. Adams made that feed as he was ranging to his left behind second base.
_Magpie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 03:08 PM EDT (#36831) #
It took until the 6th inning before we saw a grounder hit to a middle infielder.

Adams and Hudson turn the DP.

Another hard shot by Adams off the glove of McLemore into right field. It's counted as an error and Adams will get only one RBI instead of two. Jays lead 12-4 though.
_R Billie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 03:35 PM EDT (#36836) #
Maybe the 7th tool is being able to put a weird spin on the ball when you hit it. Russ seems to have it down pat.
_Scott Levy - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 03:40 PM EDT (#36837) #
How far was the Adams HR? I heard it was second deck, if so, that's more power than I thought he had.

I really hope Adams is the starting SS next season. Take one look at the affordable free agent SS crop and you'll see how pointless it would be to not have Adams play everyday for the Jays next season.
_Magpie - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 03:42 PM EDT (#36838) #
This is what no one knew about Russ Adams. When he hits the ball, he imparts some kind of strange English to it.

So that no one can catch it.

Chavez muffs a pop up.
Hatteburg muffs a grounder.
McLemore muffs two grounders.

They haven't sent him back to the dugout yet.

Spooky...

Hmmm, quite the power this rookie has discovered. His ABP (Adams Base Percentage) is still 1.000. If he keeps that up for a whole year, you figure someone will have to recognize the stat, and a new era in sabermetrics is born.

Coach, I know your not here right now, but if you see this later...

You were wondering about Crozier's defense? That lovely catch in the stands should answer a few questions :)

A very competitive series from the Jays against a tough opponent, bullpen and fielding miscues aside. Today's game was a great one to watch, what with all the rookies discovering their man-strength! :)
_6-4-3 - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 04:28 PM EDT (#36842) #
I believe that Adams' homerun was indeed in the second deck. It's hard to remember for three reasons. First, there were so many second deck home runs that they're difficult to differentiate. Second, the weather conditions practically gave me sunstroke. Third, my memory is hazy because I was FOUR SEATS AWAY from Gross' grand slam!

But yeah, I'm pretty sure that it did land in the second deck.
_Scott Levy - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 04:29 PM EDT (#36843) #
Off-topic, but in Hinske's last 314 at bats, he's hitting .274-.335-.427. Not great or anything, but only slightly worse than his career average. If he can regain at least some of the power he showed his rookie and sophmore year, there is hope for him afterall. Still wouldn't mind trading him with that contract, though.

Great game. Refreshing to watch some new young blood after the Season From Hell we've had to endure. Now if they could only squeeze Crozier into the lineup. To hell with the "too many rookies" BS, play Crozier, Adams, and Quiroz at the same time. What's the worst that could happen, the Jays lose? (GASP)

Perfect timing for me to turn on the tv to see Gross hit a slammy and Adams to belt his first dinger.

I pray I see very little of Cash, Woody, and Gomez the rest of the season.

As a paying customer (TM), I'd be really annoyed if Delgado or Wells sits. Anyone else, that's fine. But I really don't want to see Delgado playing DH in his last games with the team. Crozier can play the outfield, he can come in as a sub, but with the way Delgado's played recently, I don't want him to sit.

John Gibbons managed the game deftly as well. Let's not forget that Glynn had the bases loaded with just one out in the 5th, before the game was busted open in favour of the Jays. Sean Douglass was ready in the bullpen. Gibbons let Glynn work out of the mess and he did. The Jays batted around in the bottom of the inning. Douglass then came into the game with absolutely nothing going for him. If Douglass was called for in that bases loaded situation, we might have had a very different outcome today. Plus, I like the way he's easing all the newbies into the lineup. It seems Crozier (1/2 inning of fielding today). Adams (a 9th inning pinch-hit Friday), Quiroz (2 hits as DH Saturday) have made their ML debuts in non-pressure situations and have gotten quick success and confidence.

Kielty's an ass. I really wish stuff like this got reported. How hard is it to be civil?

I agree with you kieth easing the rookies in but know its time for us to see eric cozier in the starting line up. With colon on the mound tomorrow against bush we could possibly start 6 rookies.
cozier
adams
rios
gross
Quiroz
bush
_6-4-3 - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 09:24 PM EDT (#36861) #
6-4-3, I hear you on the sunstroke. We probably saw you on the JumboTron.

The outfield seats my dad and I were in have to be the worst place in the Dome for heat exposure. I came in with a 600 mL bottle of coke, and it was gone by the fourth inning. I had to sweat out the last innings while resisting the lure of getting gouged by a replacement bottle at $3.75.

I thought two things after the Gross grand slam. First was that I'd called it, second was that had I known that I'd be on the Jumbotron, I probably would've worn a better shirt.

It's been great to see the September callups, and the return of the real Carlos Delgado. Adams was fantastic this game, and I'd much rather see Quiroz than Cash. Carlos mashed that home run and hustled to reach base on an error.

For my final note, Ichiro went 1 / 4 today, lowering his batting average to .378, but that's still higher than the Mariner's winning percentage (.375) Has anyone ever finished with a batting average higher than his team's winning percentage? Seattle's schedule is so hard that it might happen this season. From now on, Seattle plays Cleveland (2 games) , Boston (4 games), Anaheim (7 games), Oakland (7 games), and Texas (6 games). Those 17 games against the Wild Card / Division contenders could be especially ugly.

It's early but this guy is a player, a lot of you might have to eat some crow on what you 'thought' he was.

Hey, I'm sure nobody minds eating crow if it's that tasty. I'll never fault a man for being sceptical, just for being unfairly negative. Adams has had a lot to prove. Let's hope that today's game is theorem 1 in that proof...

Yes Rory, now is the time to play the newbies everyday. We may not have to look for a new SS at all next year. I was just saying it's good they've all seemed to quickly get rid of their butterflies. Sure they're ready for starts now, everyday even. I feel reinvigorated seeing these guys play.

i thnk adams is going to be a very solid player i think about 300-310 avg 10-12hrs very nice numbers i would take in a heart beat. And he has a great eye and willl walk a lot. I wonder what position is in his future 2b or ss?
_Jonny German - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 10:03 PM EDT (#36865) #
Y'know, we're always calling on people to put some logic behind their negative opinions, so let's mix it up here: Rory, what makes you think Russ Adams, who hasn't batted over .280 since his 30-game stint in the New York-Penn League, can be a .300 hitter in the majors? I'm not saying it won't happen, but at this point that looks like a career-year projection rather than a career mark.
Mike Green - Sunday, September 05 2004 @ 10:06 PM EDT (#36866) #
The day I make lame Get Smart references, Don Adams' evil godchild Russ gets his first start, hits his first homer, and the opposition simply cannot field any ball he hits. Coincidence? I think not. It's the third time I've fallen for the "new Adams for old Adams" trick this week.:)

A most exciting start for the call ups , but it is prudent to remember the old saying "one swallow does not a summer make" in other words we, as the Jays will do, must wait until the season ends to pass judgement on their capabilities

Coach, my condolences about your friend's and your loss.

As far as the game today, what a way to end a pretty tough homestand! With any luck at all, the Jays could've swept this series. Still, this was a good series to watch and I was fortunate to catch the last two games. Yesterday was a bitter pill to swallow but it was nice to see Quiroz pick up a couple of hits in his ML debut and Cash hitting that homer. I'm sure Cash was feeling the pressure of seeing Quiroz, the catcher of the future, in the line-up and it was good to see him poke one out.

I thought the Jays were going to hang on to win Saturday's game, especially with all the Oakland baserunning errors. And when Cash threw out German trying to steal 2nd to end the 8th inning, I thought the baseball gods were smiling on the Jays. But when McMillon, who's barely over the Mendoza line, singled to lead off the 9th and Crosby got plunked while trying to bunt, I had a sinking feeling in my stomach. Unfortunately, I have witnessed both of Frasor's blown saves in person and they're eerily similar. Frasor blew save number one after wasting Pat Hentgen's solid 7 inning performance vs. Arizona and Batista's 7 inning effort went by the wayside Saturday. It may not have Batista's best effort in terms of walks and lack of K's but he still gutted it out. Oakland was lucky to pull that one out, because they were really sloppy.

But the A's sloppiness caught up to them today! With 5 errors, I wonder if they partied a little too hard last night. I'm glad I went to this one today. Nice to see the homers by Gross, Adams, and Delgado and what a catch by Crozier to end the game, putting a nice punctuation mark to the victory. Adams is an on-base freak, granted, he reached 3 times on errors but that must be a team record, getting on base in his first 6 ML plate appearances. And kudos to Ryan Glynn, who really battled today and helped us get pizza!!! He wasn't quite as dominant as the game I saw him pitch against Ottawa 2 weeks ago when he struck out 9 in a CG effort for Syracuse, but he maintained his K an inning pace through 5. In an article that was linked here, Glynn was thinking of hanging it up after the season before learning he was getting called up. Hopefully, with more outings like this, he might work his way into the Jays plans for '05. Also, it was fun to watch the game with the fellow Bauxites and Cheer Clubbers NFH, Thomas, Alex, and Tyler. All in all, a great day at the ballyard.

On a final note, I was at Thursday's game and I thought that was a nice touch by the Jays to pay tribute to Edgar Martinez in his final days at the Dome. I also enjoyed the interview Mike Wilner did with him on the Blue Jays This Week. I forgot all about how Martinez wrecked his hamstring during an exhibition game against the Jays at B.C. Place. Give him credit for bouncing back and having a heck of a career. I'd like to see him in the Hall of Fame but I'm not so sure he'll get in.

Hey Menechino: I was at that game at BC Place when Edgar got hurt! Of course nobody knew it was that serious. I too was glad to make it to the SkyDome today, and at other times this week. I've been sitting in the 100s recently though. My friend and I could clearly see NFH doing the 7th inning Blue Jay dance on Friday night from our seats in 113. At the end of that game it looked like NFH was collecting money off everyone...

I was also at the 4 team series at BC Place. I got John Jaha's autograph. I have sinced lost it though.

Thanks for the kind words, people. I will be sad about my young friend's devastating loss for some time, but after the initial sorrow of hearing the news, am more determined than ever to enjoy life and cherish my loved ones every day.

Yes, that was a great game. Some of us, of course, knew all along that Adams was a player. We just didn't realize he was able to impart glove-repellent on the ball when he hit it, or that "using the whole field" extends to the second deck of the stands. Fine catch by Crozier, too; I can't picture the former #17 doing that. Gross is going to obliterate a lot of hanging curves, and he's no slouch against a fastball. The kids are all right, and then some.

I got John Jaha's autograph.

My favourite Star Wars character. :)

Russ Adams' homerun was second deck. Line shot, landed about 10 rows behind where I was sitting. Had some sting.
_superdevin - Tuesday, September 07 2004 @ 01:40 AM EDT (#36874) #
I was FOUR SEATS AWAY from Gross' grand slam!

really? i was eight rows behind where it landed. it was very nice of the gentleman who caught that ball to give it to those children and let them reap the rewards of turning over gabe's first grand slam ball. i love seeing gestures like that.
