Jays 8 - Mariners 6

  1. Recaps:
    • Spencer Fordin:

Toronto hosted a Demolition Derby-type ballgame on Thursday night, the kind that managers hope will end with their opponent worse for wear. The Blue Jays wound up dented and dinged, but Seattle broke down first in an 8-6 win for the home team.

    • Ian Harrison:

Given an early cushion, Cha Seung Baek soon dug the Seattle Mariners a deep hole. Even another three-hit night by Ichiro Suzuki couldn't save them.

    • Mike Rutsey:

Miller, who missed all of the 2003 season and much of 2004 because of a variety of injuries, has discovered that pitching isn't like riding a bike. When you miss time and have had shoulder surgery you just don't hop back up and start pedalling.

    • CP:

Orlando Hudson and Vernon Wells each hit home runs and Eric Hinske came within a homer of the cycle as the Toronto Blue Jays overcame an early deficit to beat the Seattle Mariners 8-6 on Thursday. Suzuki had three hits for Seattle, raising his season total to 217. He remains on pace to surpass George Sisler's 1920 record of 257 hits in a single season.

    • Larry Millson:

And in last night's 8-6 victory over the Seattle Mariners before an announced crowd of 23,374 at the open SkyDome, File, 1-0, pitched 11/3 innings in relief of starter Justin Miller to earn his first victory in the majors since 2001.

    • Geoff Baker:

File's relief effort also provided him another chance to help Justin Miller, a pitcher still feeling his way back from a serious shoulder operation and a hamstring injury that sidelined him earlier this season. The two are close friends and File, who missed most of 2002 with a shoulder problem, has seen Miller through his fight back from identical arm surgery that kept him out last year.

  2. Fordin Notes on pitchers Ryan Glynn, Sean Douglass, Kerry Ligtenberg, and Josh Towers:

The skipper knows significantly more about Towers, including the exact nature of his injury. Gibbons saw Towers pitching through pain, and decided that it was a brave but altogether unnecessary move.

"There's a little strain there, a muscle near his shoulder blade. We're going to nip it in the bud," said Gibbons. "You look at where we're at in the year, how much time is left, and it makes sense. It's been nagging him. What good's it going to do him [to pitch]? What good's it going to do the team?"

  3. Rutsey Notes on who will be taking Towers' spot in the rotation:

Taking his spot on Sunday will be 30-year-old right-hander Ryan Glynn, who was signed as a free agent on June 2 from the Atlanta Braves.

Since being acquired by the Jays, Glynn was moved from the bullpen into a starting role at triple-A Syracuse and in 16 starts has gone 7-2 with a 3.40 earned-run average.

Following the game last night, Glynn, along with shortstop Russ Adams and first baseman Eric Crozier, had their contracts purchased from Syracuse, with catcher Guillermo Quiroz recalled from Syracuse.

  4. Yes, Richard Griffin, the Jays do have chance of losing 100 games:

If the Blue Jays somehow manage to avoid losing 90 games in this most disappointing of seasons, they would have a slim chance of convincing fans they were the victims of unfortunate circumstance.

At the opposite end of the spectrum, if the Jays lose 100 games, even the most loyal ticket holders will become a tough sell.

I can't really argue with this. The Jays marketing department is going to have to work pretty hard to get people into the seats next year.

  5. In an unusual turn of events for a Star Jays reporter, Geoff Baker has a feel good story in "Pedalling on mission to visit all 30 ballyards on a bicycle".

  6. We've heard a lot about Ichiro trying to break George Sisler's single-season hit record. The Star's "Ichiro gets a history lesson" discusses Ichiro's pursuit of the record.

  7. Tonight's 7:05PM EST start at the Dome: Tim Hudson (10-4 2.84ERA) vs. Ted Lilly (9-9 3.93ERA). No game preview appears to be available at this time.

A direct quote from Baker's article today. I don't know how such a xenophobic "old boy's club" joke would get by an editor.

With regards to the Call-ups.. Rumour has it that J.P, was quoted as saying he was going to leave the AAA guys at Syracuse cause they are on a Play-off run...

Anyone know if he expressly changed his plan?

Guys, why can't we be friends? I mean we share a common enemy in this War, the Yankees.

Great work Tom for identifying the song as "Why Can't We Be Friends" by War.

Have 100 million points and a picture of an octopus:

With regards to the Call-ups.. Rumour has it that J.P, was quoted as saying he was going to leave the AAA guys at Syracuse cause they are on a Play-off run...

Maybe J.P. meant/said the AA guys. The AAA team won't make the playoffs.

Certainly the question of selling tickets next year is completely at "odds" with J.P.'s master plan of contending in 2005, I mean 6, I mean 7... I think the last time I check my 3year optimism thermometer it was at August 16 -- (67), (70), (80)

Now, its Sept 1, the record is 56-78 with 28 game to go.
and I'm thinking about same
2004-67Wins, 2005-70, and 2006-80
(based on the current cast of characters)

so I guess they didn't disappoint to greatly in August..

I can't really argue with this. The Jays marketing department is going to have to work pretty hard to get people into the seats next year.

How about with something like this:

"Hello, my name is . Your 2005 Toronto Blue Jays are in the process of becoming the next team to beat in the American League East, and we'd like you to come out and see the first steps of this process. We can't guarantee that we will win, but we can guarantee that our team will try its best. Our opponents will have to earn every single win they get on our home turf. If you want to see a team have fun and play hard, come out to the SkyDome and spend a day in the sunshine. For value for money, baseball can't be beat. See you at the park."

Naah, it probably wouldn't work. But it would be better than the commercial showing the O-Dog making a milkshake out of bobbleheads, or the "You've got to see these guys play!!" commercial.
Dave Till - Friday, September 03 2004 @ 10:26 AM EDT (#37236) #

The problem with these commercials is that they're made before anyone knows how the season will go. Based on last year, You Gotta See These Guys Play made sense. Not so much with everyone hurt and/or underperforming for the first half.

I think they need to work on something that tells you you're getting in on the ground floor. See your future champions today. Be there from the beginning. Do like Cherry's Ice Dogs promise: we make the playoffs by such-and-such a year or all the season's ticket holders get free leather jackets. Doesn't have to be the playoffs, necessarily, but some kind of promise of future performance.
_Spicol - Friday, September 03 2004 @ 10:31 AM EDT (#37239) #
The "You've got to see these guys play!!" commercial is horrible. Whenever someone tells me I have to do something, my question to them is always: Why? What's the reason I have to do this thing that you suggest?

The commercial doesn't answer that for me.

Daryn, how do you figure? The current cast of characters excuse is not a good one either. You're telling me that a healthy Wells, Halladay, and Cat are only worth 3 wins? That's assuming no free agents are added! Still below .500 for 2006? Why all the pessimism? Does that assume Bush has a torn labrum, Halladay never is the same, Wells drops down to 250/300/350, Rogers pockets the extra money, Lilly goes 6-17, and Quiroz hits like Cash?

I just don't really understand the logic? What was your 3 year forcast back in 2002? Did you peg the Jays for 86 wins in 2003?
Craig B - Friday, September 03 2004 @ 11:08 AM EDT (#37244) #
You're telling me that a healthy Wells, Halladay, and Cat are only worth 3 wins?

Well, Daryn may be taking into account the fact that they may NOT be healthy, or even around in Cat's case.

I think he's being unduly (massively) pessimistic, but it's defensible.

there will be AA call-ups when the playoffs end. I'm guessing at least League will get the call, and possibly Chacin (who will be back down in AA for the playoffs). The League guess, is actually not a guess at all, JP mentioned it a few weeks ago when he was in the broadcast boothduring a sprotsnet broadcast. The chacin guess is 100% speculation, but it makes a lot of sense.

As a huge fan of the Errol Flynn film The Sea Hawk, I find The Princess Bride screamingly funny, especially Christopher Guest's brilliant cloning of Henry Daniel.

Princess Bride fans who haven't seen The Sea Hawk are missing some of the best gags in the movie, IMO (and are all invited to my house to watch The Sea Hawk laserdisc that took me nearly ten years to find -- now I'm working on finding the old CBS laserdisc of the much shorter U.S. version just because I'm a freaky completist like that).

I've been excited ever since I looked up the probables. It's a great match-up, and I'm glad I got free tickets for it via the Jays' newsletter offer.

I'm mildly dissapointed that I'm going on Sunday, and getting Harden vs Glynn instead of Batista vs Mulder, but I'll get over it. Harden definately is more exciting than Gil Meche.

I've lived in Toronto virtually all my life and so I have some experience with the sports fans here. I think that Toronto will support--

1--The Leafs under any circumstances

2--A new major league franchise, like the early Jays and Raptors

3--At least one other team so long as that team is winning

That is, marketing departments are great, but you won't see a lot of Toronto fans at the Dome until the Jays are really competitive. I don't think they have to win, but they have to be close

Thanks, Marc, that's the one I already have -- the original British cut with the sepia-toned middle sequence. There was a CBS/Fox LD released in the '80s of the much shorter US cut, missing much of the wartime propaganda about how one Englishman could defeat the whole Spanish Armada. ;)

Joe, I'm an audiophile, so this supercompressed 5.1 audio thing just doesn't cut it for me. LaserDiscs have nice old fashioned uncompressed PCM audio. And plus I have hundreds of LDs that you can't find on DVD anyways, like, oh, The Sea Hawk and those versions of the Star Wars movies where Greedo never gets a shot in.

This year's ads are nowhere near as good as last year's. Vernon Wells with his "McLuhan" entrance, Barnett taking a sip of maple syrup from a flask, the frozen Gatorade, Woody and Doc in the canoe (I don't care what you say, I liked it), and the one with Walker and Tam ogling the Queen.

This year, we have the O-Dog making a drink, Halladay skipping a stone, and a bunch of bad ones.

COMN for an article on the latest Jays TV rating, and how their marketing strategies and ratings compare to those of the Argos. Obviously, the number of games each team plays factors into the ratings... but I still don't like seeing a team that was on the verge of death last year getting better ratings than the Jays.

I think the Jays have to somehow convince people in Toronto that baseball is part of their culture.

Look at the Cubs, Red Sox, Dodgers, Leafs, Cardinals. All the healthy francises have support regardless of record.

I live in Edmonton and people here support the Eskimos and Oilers as an expression of civic pride.

Screw the fancy advertising and get some players out in the community, to schools, etc. to convince people they care about TO and are playing for them. Right now I expect a lot of people see the Jays as a bunch of overpaid American mercenaries (NB I am not saying they are - only that may be the perception)

Ok, those aware of contract stuff:

What's the difference between purchasing the contract and recalling someone? Does purchasing the contract imply that they are being put on the 40 man roster for the first time, and recalling is simply taking somebody who's already on the roster and taking him back? Does money actually change hands?

Yes, Purchasing The Contract means puting a guy on the 40-man. "Recalling" a guy is just calling him back from his optional assignment

At one time, long ago, real money did change hands, but no longer unless they do it as some kind of accounting measure.
_Rob - Friday, September 03 2004 @ 04:01 PM EDT (#37280) #
Your answers, Joe, which I see Craig has answered anyway. But I'll go ahead:

At the end of spring training, every minor league-destined player on the 40-man roster is optioned to their minor league club. This is why they are "recalled" as opposed to "called up", because they were technically on the 25-man active roster for, oh, three or four minutes at the end of March.

Also, a player who is not on the 40-man roster is "purchased" and, presumably, the major league club assumes his contract. (Craig says that is no longer the case. It is unwise to argue legalities with a lawyer, so I concur.)

Hope that helps.

Rory:

9/2/04 Recalled C Guillermo Quiroz and purchased the contracts of RHP Ryan Glynn, SS Russ Adams and 1B Eric Crozier.
(I left out the date last time.) Now, I'm not saying you're wrong. Peterson may still be called up. We found about his original callup from the Fisher Cats website, so who knows.

For what it's worth, ESPN doesn't include Peterson either.

I barely know anything about this, Joe, but I'll share what I've heard. I have no way of determining whether this is right or wrong.

My understanding is that the Blue Jays pay all the player salaries, and the minor league teams cover all other expenses related to their clubs. I have no idea how it works for the coaches, but I expect the same applies.

Is there a minor-league minimum?

Yes! For players in their first professional year, the minimum salary is $850 per month. I suspect that's less in the VSL and DSL. Full-season Class A players earn a minimum of $1050 per month. AA and AAA players earn a minimum of $1500 per month. All figures U.S.

There's also a per diem when players are on the road, I think $15 or $20 per day.

Major leaguers past their first major league season (i.e. who have at least one day of big-league service time) have a minimum salary of $50,000 per year.

So that first callup is incredibly important for some guys, since they go from a minimum of $1500 for six months, to a $50,000 minimum. Big difference, and one I never thought about before.

Here's a salary scale from Prospect Watch that's pretty accurate for the youngest guys. Guys who have some experience may make more...

· First Year: $850 per month
· Class A: $1050-$1250 per month
· Class AA: $1250-$1450 per month
· Class AAA: $1500-$2000 per month
Craig B - Friday, September 03 2004 @ 04:26 PM EDT (#37289) #
By the way, if YOU want to earn the same as a first-year minor leguer, you should apply for an internship with the St. Louis Cardinals' spring training facility, Roger Dean Stadium.
Craig B - Friday, September 03 2004 @ 04:31 PM EDT (#37290) #
First-year salaries in the VSL/DSL are $800 per month, going up to $850 in the second year.

Also, apparently AAA players got a raise recently. AA minimum is still $1500 and AAA minimum is now $2150 per month.

Meal money is now $20 a day at all levels, only when on the road.

By the way, just for comparison, the major-league per diem is $76.50.

Craig, that's awesome data. I never realized how bad minor-league players have it. In the VSL/DSL, you're making minimum wage, basically, although the per diem would help with that. A rule 5 guy stuck in, say, AA, would be getting a HUGE raise—over $30000 more—even if he wasn't able to stick around in the majors.

By the way, how do I get myself a per diem from my job? I would feel a lot less bad about going out for lunch if work paid for it. :)

Russ Adams - SS Blue Jays - Adams has a future in the majors, but he hasn’t fulfilled expectations since being drafted 14th overall in 2002. He’s not a great hitter (.284/.348/.403 for Syracuse this year) and he’s probably more of a second baseman than a shortstop. He might end up as a utilityman. The Jays will give him several starts at shortstop this month, and if he does well, he’ll be considered for the starting job next year. It’s far more likely that he’ll spend a second season in Triple-A in 2005. Grade D
Eric Crozier - 1B Blue Jays - Crozier, who was picked up from the Indians for Josh Phelps in August, should be the Jays’ primary designated hitter against right-handers for the rest of the season. He has earned an opportunity by batting .295/.381/.532 between two Triple-A clubs this year. How he performs this month should determine whether he becomes a candidate to take over Carlos Delgado’s job next year. I don’t see him as a long-term regular, but he is worth adding in AL-only leagues for the stretch run and he’s a sleeper for 2005. Grade C+
Guillermo Quiroz - C Blue Jays - Quiroz missed two months with a broken hand and hit .231/.313/.410 for Triple-A Syracuse while healthy this year, hurting his case for taking over as Toronto’s catcher next year. He still should be viewed as a future regular, but he could use another half season in Triple-A next year. He figures to get it unless he’s extremely impressive this month, and since the Jays keep using Gregg Zaun, it’s unclear how much of an opportunity the youngster will get. Grade D+ ( This is all from rotoworld.com)

Haven't you been getting your Box per diem? Heck, you should have said so. In fact, I'll double it.

In the VSL/DSL, you're making minimum wage, basically

But keep in mind, these players get those salaries year-round, at the academies. So in fact they are better off than U.S. minor leaguers. Also, the average yearly income in the Dominican is something like $1500, though I think it's a fair bit higher in Venezuela.

Wilner on the 5:00 FAN update:

- Same lineup as last night, with Johnson/Gross switching around the LF/DH duties (Reed in left tonight)
- Obviously, if it's the same lineup, no starts for the new callups
- Crozier wearing Phelps' old #17, taking grounders at first
- Quiroz and Glynn working out there as well

Adams was recalled, but Wilner didn't mention him. Maybe I missed something during the update, but I didn't hear his name.

ducey are you rob ducey.

Nope. I would think I would know a little more about baseball if I was. My "name" is just taken from of the old baseball stadium in Edmonton - John Ducey Park.

Florida in January, doing baseball stuff, would qualify as a Smart Move.

I'm thinking that Florida in hurricane season isn't the smartest move. Perhaps as a co-op, you could convince the FSL to play in New Mexico for a month. :)

Yes, Florida's been hit badly recently, with more to come, but should be better in the winter term, thanks for the link btw.

Thats the thing about living in the US. In the west earthquakes, east, hurricanes, and the other central states plain suck. I wouldn't mind making a living in Toronto, as long as Global Warming doesn't make the summers any more unbearable.
