Sometimes they win, sometimes they lose, sometimes it rains. Four wins in five games for the minor league affiliates last night on this very special edition of Minor League Update. Homsar, this one's for you.

Syracuse 9 Pawtucket 5

The SkyChiefs pounded out 15 hits against the PawSox but left the heavy damage until late. A four-run ninth made the difference as Ryan French singled, stole second, and scored the winning run. Ryan Sequea pounded out four hits and three RBI and Ryan Quiroz was 2-for-5 with two RBI. Ryan Matos was steady but unspectacular for six innings as the starter, Ryan Kershner struck out three of the four batters he faced, and Ryan File closed it out.

Box score

The Game story focuses on the incredible contributions of speedster/slugger Ryan French, who has blossomed since coming into the Blue Jays organization.

New Hampshire 8 Portland 3

Another win for the good guys as Ryan Hattig stroked a monster home run as he continued his inexorable march into his man-strength. Ryan Banks continued his encouraging recovery; although he allowed five hits and three walks in his five innings, he struck out seven Sea Dogs. The Fisher Cat bullpen shut down Portland for four innings; congrats to Ryan Ozias, Ryan Thompson and Ryan Jackson. Like their bigger brothers, the Fisher Cats had 15 hits; top prospect Ryan Hill is still on fire as he went 3-for-4 with a double.

New Hampshire's magic number for a spot in the EL playoffs is now two.

Box score

The Game story is that the F-Cats are "on a magical roll". I hope it's a cinnamon roll.

Dunedin at Clearwater postponed

Rain in Clearwater forced a postponement, and there will be a doubleheader today starting at 5:05.

Charleston 5 Kanapolis 4

Ryan Patrick had the big hit for the Alley Cats in the bottom of the 8th, turning a 4-3 deficit into a 5-4 win over Kannapolis. Ryan Peralta and Ryan Acey had two hits each for Charleston; Ryan Dalton got credit for the win after striking out both batters he faced. A tough no-decision for Ryan Core, who pitched a quality start allowing three runs (one earned) in six innings, striknig out six and walking only one.

Box score

The Ganme Story discusses the Alley Cats' home winning streak, now at 11 games.

Bonus Story... congratulations to Ryan Diaz and Ryan Mastny for being names Sally League All-Stars.

Vermont 4 Auburn 3

What's wrong with the Doubledays? :)

The best team in minor league baseball dropped their 18th game of the season (versus 45 wins) in the bottom of the ninth against the Expos in Burlington as Ryan Yates and Ryan Day couldn't hold the win for Ryan Roy. Roy pitched very well (2.2 shutout innings) in relief of Ryan Janssen, who had allowed just two hits and two runs through five innings. Auburn could only manage five hits; the key blows were doubles by Ryan Nielsen, Ryan Hall and Ryan Metropoulos and an RBI single by Ryan Lind.

Box score

Game Story from WCAX-TV in Burlington, VT.

Pulaski 6 Elizabethton 3

Ryan-Hung Cheng's controlcontinued to slip as he walked four and struck out four (but allowed only one hit - a home run) in four innings in Pulaski. Ryan Cannon was tremendously impressive in relief, striking out six Twins in 3 1/3 innings to grab the win. Every P-Jay except Ryan Hicks got at least one hit (three to backup shortstop Ryan Sena) and Ryan Hetherington and Ryan Velez hit triples. Ryan Tressler got his fifth save and lowered his ERA to 1.59 with a scoreles ninth.

Box score

Three-Star Selection!

A very tough three-star selection today, without many outstanding individual performances despite four wins out of five. All the three are hitters from the top of the organization...

Third Star : Ryan Hill, 3-for-4 with a double, two runs and two RBI for New Hampshire.

Second Star : Ryan Sequea, three singles and a double in five at-bats, with three RBI.

First Star : Ryan Hattig, 2-for-4 including a home run which was a titanic display of man-strength.

Gerry, I was going to post something to the same effect, but you beat me to it. You have to like that Hill has muscled up in the middle of a pennant race. He has all the markers of a fine major leaguer.

I'd just like to apologize for that. I had a rough night. I made my pitches, but the other guys just kept hitting them, and you've got to tip your hat. I feel like I let the whole team down, and I just want to get back on the mound again and make it up to all of you.

From the Auburn/Vermont boxscore -

Mississauga native (and former Ontario Blue Jay) Aaron Wideman held a pretty damn good Auburn lineup to 1 hit through 5, with 2 BBs vs. 5 Ks.

With last night's performance his ERA has dropped to 1.82, with 7.8 punches per nine and 2.7 BB. At 19.

I only brag because I got to coach him for 6 years...

This is off-topic but there's some encouraging news as far as the Canadian minor league baseball scene goes. I saw this on "The Score" this morning. The Baltimore Orioles have extended their Player Development Contract with the Triple A Ottawa Lynx to 2006.

I'm surprised by this seeing that the Lynx barely average 2,000 fans a game at last check. I read the Lynx have a lease at their stadium until 2009 and that it'll be expensive to break it.

But, it looks good so far that there will still be some Triple A ball in Canada, even though Edmonton is out of the PCL in 2005. I guess that'll leave Ottawa and Vancouver as the only Canadian minor pro teams to play ball next year (and the Quebec Capitales if you're counting Independent teams).

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are probably the strongest Canadian minor league franchise right now.

I live an hour away from Winnipeg and they have a great thing going there. They have an amazing stadium, great attendance and a streak of excellent teams.

This years team is probably the wost one they've ever had and they're still in the playoff hunt.

I'm surprised by this seeing that the Lynx barely average 2,000 fans a game at last check.

I'm surprised they can claim 2,000 fans. They're clearly counting tickets bought by corporate interests, because I don't think I've ever seen 2,000 people at that ballaprk the last few years. I've been there for games of 200.

Nonetheless, I'm glad to hear that AAA baseball will be sticking around for several more years here in the nation's capital. Getting to see the Skychiefs three times a year will be cool. But the Lynx simply have got to do a better job marketing themselves in this city (and in Gatineau, for that matter). They have almost no presence here: in Ottawa, the sporting attractions are the Senators, the '67s, the Renegades, and then maybe the Lynx.

Apparently the D Backs may lose Steven Drew, their first pick. There are certainly a lot of twists to this one. COMN

If he does not sign, presumably the Jays will have a shot at him next June - I don't expect they would take a Boras client would they?

I don't expect they would take a Boras client would they?

I'm sure they would if they felt the price would be right. I don't think the price would be right. Drew is likely to push his demands even harder this time, especially knowing that Colangelo was about to give in when he was pushed aside.
_Moffatt - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 03:33 PM EDT (#39403) #
Would you want the Jays to risk, say, a 5th overall pick on Drew?

I'd hate to see the Jays draft someone and not sign him and only get a compensation round pick for their troubles.
Craig B - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 03:36 PM EDT (#39404) #
Sowers has signed, by the way - the first of the top college pitchers to do so. Looks like he was the first to blink.

I expect the others (or at least Verlander and the Rice trio) to follow shortly, but who knows...

It's down to the wire for Jered Weaver.
_Jordan - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 03:38 PM EDT (#39405) #
Rob, I think the name has changed ... JetForm ceased sponsoring the park, apparently because they ceased operations ... so now I think it's just Lynx Stadium.

I don't have many minor-league parks to compare it to, but I think it's pretty good. The field is in terrific shape, considering the climate, and I don't think there are any bad seats in the house. The luxury boxes are, well, not luxurious exactly, but they're more than fine. Food and drink are way expensive, of course ($9.00 for a 24-oz draft), and none too appetizing, but that's par for the course. There's a lot of between-innings entertainment -- I think too much, but it's for the kids -- and the lame-ass travelling MC with the microphone trend has hit this ballpark too, but it's only intermittent. Really, the only bad thing about the park is the weather -- unused tickets for April and May games can be kept and used for games later in the summer, which should tell you how cold it gets here in the springtime. Overall, I'd say it's a fine ballpark, and would be even better with more fans.
_Paul D - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 03:38 PM EDT (#39406) #
Craig, is Stephen Drew even all that good?

My impression is that while he's a solid choice, he's certainly not at the same level of some other recent top choices.
Craig B - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 03:42 PM EDT (#39407) #
Just to give the news, Anaheim's talks with Weaver are at a "standstill". The Rays still expect to sign Niemann. All these guys are expected not to pitch until the instructional league. No news on Townsend. The Mets are "not close at all" with Philip Humber and Jim Duquette is starting to seriously sweat. The Tigers think Verlander will sign, but classes begin on Monday so they better get him done quick or he acquires a lot more leverage.
_Rob - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 03:43 PM EDT (#39408) #
Craig: I'm rather void of any knowledge about the rules for signing draft picks. Does "It's down to the wire for Jered Weaver" means he may return to school?

Jordan: I was just in Ottawa, and wanted to go to Lynx game, but the team was on the road. The day after I left, they were back, and Syracuse was in town. Go figure. ;)
Craig B - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 03:45 PM EDT (#39409) #
Drew's pretty good. I think he was the best position player in the draft, barely, which isn't saying much since the quality wasn't that great. Drew's better than a typical #15 pick but maybe around a #10 or so.

Is he worth $5 million? I don't think he is; maybe half that. I think the Diamondbacks are better off saving their money and taking a compensation pick, if he won't budge off his demands. They are going to have a #1 to budget for - (could it be Jered Weaver?) and need to use their money wisely.
Craig B - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 03:46 PM EDT (#39410) #
Rob, Weaver may return to school though that appears unlikely. Boras is likely to keep him out of school and hope the Angels cave.
_Rob - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 03:49 PM EDT (#39411) #
I see. So Weaver could re-enter the 2005 draft; when's the deadline for him to sign with the Angels?
_Chris H - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 03:50 PM EDT (#39412) #
I think with one of the top picks next year, I wouldnt be surprised to see the Jays in this situation in 2005...

I can just see this site next year with many visitors complaining about the Jays not signing there first round pick yet...(everybody thinks Jackson or Purcey took a long time, well just wait!)...

C.
Craig B - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 04:06 PM EDT (#39413) #
Weaver has until next year's draft to sign with Anaheim, unless he returns to school. Once he attends his first class, he can't sign with Anaheim and goes back into the pool for 2005.

I've often wondered what the threshold for "starting class" is. Is it simply walking into the room? Buying the books? Taking a seat in the lecture hall for the first class? I have visions of Scott Boras running into the theatre for Psych 1000, cellphone glued to one ear, frantically waving at his client, "Don't sit down!"

The Winnipeg Goldeyes are probably the strongest Canadian minor league franchise right now.

I knew I was forgetting somebody!! Vancouver is also doing pretty well. I had a chance to visit Nat Bailey Stadium last year and it's a nice little ball yard. It's an older park but the scenery is beautitful with all the trees surrounding it. I believe they average over 3,000 fans a game, which is pretty good for low A ball. I don't think the Canadians have had a winning record (that may change this year!) since they came back to the minors but the people still support them, which is great to see.

But the Lynx simply have got to do a better job marketing themselves in this city (and in Gatineau, for that matter). They have almost no presence here: in Ottawa, the sporting attractions are the Senators, the '67s, the Renegades, and then maybe the Lynx.

I agree with that. Last August, my lady and I saw the Lynx sweep Pawtucket in a doubleheader (including a come from behind win in Game 2) when they were battling the PawSox for the wild card, which they eventually won. The coverage in the Ottawa Sun the next day was minimal. Same thing with last Saturday's game vs. Syracuse, a 14 inning affair, just a half-page article in the Sun. I went to a game a year in their first 2 years, '93 and '94, and they had close to sell-out crowds. And they won the IL title in '95. Did the strike affect attendance or the fact they won the IL title so soon bore people? One fan I spoke to last year says the fans can't identify with the players because of the nature of roster changes. I think the people in Ottawa are missing out. It's a great park to watch a game.

Things to watch tonight. Brandon League and Zach Jackson make starts. Also, someone mentioned somewhere that Perkins starts the 2nd game of the Dunedin doubleheader. No one is listed as a starter at this point but let's hope it's true.

Did the strike affect attendance or the fact they won the IL title so soon bore people?

I'll probably earn the wrath of my fellow citizens, but this just isn't a great sports town. The Sens will always sell out because of corporate sponsorship and because it's hockey, and the '67s will always sell out because it's NHL-calibre hockey at a fraction of the price. Beyond that ... the city has already lost one CFL franchise, and once the novelty wears off the Renegades, they may have problems too.

The tech boom began to transform this place from Snooze City into something more vibrant and exciting, but the tech bust killed a lot of that momentum; Nortel in particular has just brutalized the city. The mid-'90s were the best of times for Ottawa and for the Lynx: the Expos were a first-place club, and a lot of their stars had graduated directly from here. There was genuine affection for the team as well: the only Lynx player ever to have his jersey retired is F.P. Santangelo, the prototypical Fan Favourite.

I don't think it was the strike per se that killed baseball here; in most places, the major-league strike rescued and revived minor-league baseball. I think it was a combination of things: the Expos had their hearts ripped out and then went into foster care; the novelty of a pro baseball team wore off; the bad weather made it hard to get any momentum; and like I say, it's not a big sports town unless someone is paying your way into the luxury box (and in the post-Radwanski era, people are a lot more careful about that). The real games here are played inside boardrooms and committee chambers; sports are a distant second.
Craig B - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 05:23 PM EDT (#39423) #
the '67s will always sell out because it's NHL-calibre hockey at a fraction of the price

Gee whiz, if people think junior hockey is NHL calibre, they'll pay anything for anything. :)

Junior hockey isn't even of the calibre of top-quality senior hockey, which no longer draws flies.

The tech boom began to transform this place from Snooze City into something more vibrant and exciting, but the tech bust killed a lot of that momentum

As a one-time Ottawa resident and frequent visitor with family there, let me underline this in bright red. Ottawa's just not a "crowd town", and it's not really very fun. Fun is definitely Out in Ottawa. Lovely city, though.

Top of 8 AA:

Drew Ehrlich (32nd round pick this year!) on to pitch for Portland.

Paul Chiaffreddo (0-3) runs the count full, fouls off a couple, and then walks. Mike Snyder (2-3) takes a couple of balls, and the pitching coach makes a visit. The count runs full again. Snyder grounds a ball to first. The pitcher Ehrlich is slow to get to the bag and Snyder beats it out, runners on first and second. The Portland faithful boo Ehrlich.

Tyrell Godwin chops a ball in front of the plate and the catcher throws him out, runners move up to second and third. Dominic Rich grounds a ball to first, he throws home, Chiaffreddo is caught in a rundown and is tagged out, but Rich goes to second and Snyder to third. Aaron Hill flies out.

0 runs, 2 hits.

6-2 New Hampshire after 7 and 1/2.
Mike Green - Thursday, August 26 2004 @ 09:57 PM EDT (#39434) #
Bottom of 8:

Ryan Houston still pitching. Ex-hot-prospect Hanley Ramirez runs the count full, and strikes out swinging on a high, hard one. Jamie Vermilyea warming. Mike Lockwood walks. With Kenny Perez up, a passed ball allows Lockwood to advance to second. Perez grounds out to second, Lockwood to third. On the groundout, the bat broke and it flew out and caught Houston in the leg.

The phone rings, and I miss 10 minutes.

It's now the bottom of 9. One out. Jordan DeJong strikes out Fulz. Mike Lopez grounds out to second.

NEW HAMPSHIRE WINS 6-2.

Jason Arnold and Kip Bouknight start for the Fisher Cats in a doubleheader tomorrow.

By enrolling for fall-semester classes Thursday, Florida State shortstop Stephen Drew has issued an ultimatum to the Arizona Diamondbacks:

Pay up by 11 a.m. Tuesday or else.

"His first class is not until Tuesday," FSU coach Mike Martin said. "If he and the Diamondbacks do not come to an agreement, he will attend class on Tuesday."

Of course I'm not sure what happens if he skips class.
