And I'm still standing here, and you're miles away
And I'm wonderin' why you left
And there's a storm that's raging through my frozen heart tonight

I hear your name in certain circles, and it always makes me smile
I spend my time thinkin' about you, and it's almost driving me wild
And there's a heart that's breaking down this long distance line tonight

Hey, the Jays held onto a big lead against the O's last night!

* Recaps:
Towers, Blue Jays crush O's - Fordin
Towers Becomes Ace - Rutsey
A lead that didn't slip away - Millson
Jay refrain: Towers and pray for showers - Ryan

Of course the Jays play in at SkyDome so even if it was raining they'd be playing, but I suppose Headline Writer would rather make a clever rhyming line.

Towers (9-4) was removed from the rotation in April, but he's gradually become Toronto's unlikely stopper. He's 6-0 in starts following a loss, and the latest victory gave him seven wins in his last eight starts.

------

"I don't know what's going on. I just want to keep putting good swings on the ball," said Hinske. "Hopefully, I'm finding my stroke the other way -- when I'm hitting it that way, that's when I'm getting locked in. That's a good sign for me."

* Notes:
Always seize the moment - Fordin
Blue Jay Notes - Woody Makes Bid - Rutsey

The shortstop snapped an 0-for-17 skid in Friday night's game, and came back to hit a grand slam later in the game. Woodward is still young enough to establish himself. However, Gibbons warned, if he doesn't do it soon, he risks being pigeonholed.

"He's got to take over the position or become a part-time guy. It's all about production, putting the best team on the field," he said. "I think there's a lot there that hasn't come out. He's got to do it, and he knows that. My heart tells me he will."

* Today's Game:
Blue Jays looking to repeat vs. O's - A rematch of last Sunday's game; rookie hurlers Bush and Cabrera take the hill for the Jays and Os respectively. Game time is 4:05.

Pat Gillick, we're sure Missing You right about now. Looks like it's going to be a long Waite until this team returns to the playoffs...

(I don't actually believe that, but it seemed like an easy fit)

Nice job GT.

Is satellite ratio available in Canada? I got it a couple months ago and love it. I got today's song compliments of the 80s channel on Sirius.

Yeah, satellite radio is available here, I know someone who just got it. It's only US stuff now on the service they're on, but apparently they're adding a bunch of Canadian ones over the next year.

Towers Leads the team in Wins now... what a very scary and unlikely thought. (Well Tied with Migeul).

Only thing that scares me about towers in the sheer number of times he gives up hits (although not many homeruns this year)... but he seems to make up for it in his VERY VERY few walks.

I mean I like Towers a lot as a starter... hes just a bit of an Enigma to me.

Josh Phelps just hit his first homerun as an Indian. Needless to say, it was off a soft tossing lefty, Terry Mulholland.

Former Jay Hero and 2003 Andujar winner Estaban Loaiza starts today for the New York Yankees. AND, it's Esteban Loiaza bobblehead giveaway day ... at Comiskey Park in Chicago!

So while he starts for the Yanks, his bobblehead faces off with the Red Sox. What a concept! Unfortunately for the pinstriped ones, they'd probably rather have the bobble head than the Esteban "swivel head" model that's been on display in the Bronx recently.
_DaveInNYC - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 02:06 PM EDT (#40633) #
Ahhh I love it.

Esteban Loaiza allows BACK TO BACK BOMBS to Guillen and Davanon.

Folks, that's 30 hrs allowed on the season for Esteban. That's just awful.

Yes, needless to say. It gives him 13 homers on the season so far. One behind Vernon and ten more RBI than V-Dub. Why do we always feel like we need to disparage our departed. Did Josh piss us off?
_Smack - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 03:03 PM EDT (#40635) #
He will put up better stats simply because there are more lefties in the AL Central. Its better for him to have success, than for us day in and day out to complain about how we are spending 2 million a year for a guy who plays DH 25% of the time.
_Ryan Lind - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 03:29 PM EDT (#40636) #
Has anyone had a look at Barry Bonds' stats lately? Dear lord...

174 walks. 34 homeruns. 24 strikeouts.

.610 OBP / .803 SLG

He is not human.
_Mark J - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 03:51 PM EDT (#40637) #
I had just gotten used to Bonds' OBAs of higher than .500, but that "6" at the start is just freakish. In mid-August, too.
_Loveshack - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 03:54 PM EDT (#40638) #

I dont think it's disparaging to point out that Josh hit a homerun off a "soft-tossing lefty". That's not an insult, that's just a statistical fact and he's been very good at it all year.

Just reading some baseball stories on Yahoo Sports and came across a small blurb about the Pirates and Oliver Perez who was called for an illegal pitch due because Plate umpire Joe West said Perez altered his delivery on a 3-2 pitch to Reggie Sanders that appeared to be over the middle of the plate..

Since when did this become illegal? Does anyone know what really happened? Just sorta curious...
_R Billie - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 04:34 PM EDT (#40640) #
Illegal pitch? Unless he did something really weird in his delivery I haven't heard of this kind of thing before.

And that's entirely how I meant it. The Indians need a lefty-killer and Phelps fits the bill. He's only 25% of a player, but a hell of player in that role.
_Lefty - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 08:06 PM EDT (#40642) #
Thanks for the clarification Chuck. I honestly didn't read the words on the page that way. I just hate to see people dissed who don't deserve it. Sorry.
Mike Green - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 08:54 PM EDT (#40643) #
And Barry keeps on rolling. He didn't homer today, but merely went 4-4 with 2 doubles, a triple and 2 walks. His GPA went up marginally.

He's 40 and still far and away the best player in the game. Amazing.
_Ryan Lind - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 09:15 PM EDT (#40644) #
And yet, Eric Gagne says that Beltre is the NL MVP, and not only that, says "No one else is even close." WTF??
Gerry - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 10:12 PM EDT (#40645) #
I think I saw the Perez pitch, he stopped his delivery mid way, with his leg in the air, then continued.
_6-4-3 - Saturday, August 21 2004 @ 11:56 PM EDT (#40646) #
Even better, ESPN's website has continually been claiming that Scott Rolen or Albert Pujols is the MVP. Has anyone even looked at the Giants roster, and imagined what it would be like if Bonds wasn't on that team? Would the Giants be anywhere near the Wild Card without Barry? If the columnists that support the Cards would say "We think Barry is doping, and don't want to recognize him", that'd be one thing, but to totally ignore or belittle Bonds in MVP conversations is insane.
_Rob - Sunday, August 22 2004 @ 12:43 AM EDT (#40647) #
The following is unrelated to anything:

Ever wonder what happened to Scott Wiggins? He's got some stats for Trenton this year (AA, Yankees) but isn't on their roster. No stats after June.

Any ideas? And, how did he get back with the Yanks after signing with the Brewers in November? He was that bad, I guess, that New York had to have him.

It would be hilarious if Wiggins was the warm body in another Mondesi-type deal. Something for his resume, no doubt.
_Magpie - Sunday, August 22 2004 @ 12:46 AM EDT (#40648) #
It's just that people are tired of giving Bonds the MVP - just tired - and will look for any excuse whatsoever to give it to someone else.

Before... well they just didn't like him.

Anyway, that's why Terry Pendleton and Jeff Kent have MVP awards on their resumes.

If you can get over it, its obvious that during most of the last twelve seasons, Bonds has been about the most valuable player since Babe Ruth.
_Mick - Sunday, August 22 2004 @ 02:29 PM EDT (#40649) #
I think I saw the Perez pitch, he stopped his delivery mid way, with his leg in the air, then continued.

Well, then, Luis Tiant, at a minimum of 14 years of 30 starts averaging 100 pitches, threw approximately forty-two thousand illegal pitches over the course of his career, only a few thousand more than committed by Fernando Valenzuela
