Syracuse score an improbable win, Josh Banks was a welcoming host, and Auburn and Pulaski had five hits between them.

Syracuse 9 Rochester 7

The Chiefs came in to the top of the eighth down 6-1. With their offense this year that deficit suggested another loss for the Chiefs, but not on this day. Adam Johson came on to pitch the eighth for Rochester and a lead-off error opened the floodgates. The error was followed by four straight hits and a Glenn Williams triple to tie the score.

Talley Haines gave up a home run in the bottom of the eighth to put the Chiefs in the hole again, but Anton French hit a home run to lead off the ninth to tie the game. Russ Adams and Gabe Gross hit back to back doubles to put the Chiefs ahead and Williams singled to deliver an insurance run.

Josue Matos started for Syracuse and allowed six runs on seven hits in five innings. Adam Peterson pitched two scoreless innings. Bob File got the save.

French and Williams each had three hits. Gross, Adams and Sequea each had two.

Game Story

Portland 7 New Hampshire 5

When I was visiting with New Hampshire two weeks ago the coaches were stressing that Josh Banks needed to keep the ball down, he was getting the ball up in the hitting zone. Yesterday he did not keep the ball down and he paid for it. Portland had four home runs, none of them cheap ones. He allowed a two run shot in the second, back to back jacks in the third and another solo shot in the fourth. Banks allowed seven hits, no walks, and seven runs. He left no men on base.

The Cats scored one run in the second and four in the seventh to make it interesting. New Hampshire had eleven hits, three each by Tyrell Godwin and Mikael Jova. Aaron Hill was 0-4.

Game Story

Dunedin

Game Postponed.

Charleston

Scheduled day off

Mahoning Valley 2 Auburn 1

This was a pitchers duel, the teams managed nine hits between them, and neither team walked a hitter. Mike MacDonald started for Auburn and pitched eight innings. He was better at hitting the batters rather than making them miss. He hit three batters but had only one K, he also allowed five hits. MacDonald conceded a first inning run on a wild pitch and a fifth inning run on a home run. A Ryan Klosterman home run was the only action for the Doubledays.

Bristol 4 Pulaski 0

One hit, one lousy stinking hit was all Pulaski could manage against Bristol. Nick Thomas registered the singleton in the sixth inning. Pulaski did have eight walks, Graig Badger had four of them.

Chi Hung Cheng pitched five strong innings with seven strikeouts and four hits allowed. Bryan Gale pitched a scoreless sixth but ran into trouble in the seventh, allowing a run and leaving the bases loaded. Adrian Martin came on for a relief appearance and the first two hitters he faced singled, to make it 4-0.

Our Three-Star Selection

The 3rd Star: Chi Hung Cheng, five scoreless innings
The 2nd Star: Mike MacDonald, eight strong innings
The 1st Star: Anton French, three hits with the game tying home run in the ninth

I haven't been following too closely - have Purcey and/or Jackson pitched yet? Is that why there were 2 promotions to Charleston, to clear room?
Mike D - Monday, August 02 2004 @ 01:11 PM EDT (#46468) #
I read that Zack Jackson will make his Auburn debut in two weeks. I haven't heard of when Purcey will make his first appearance.

I could not help but notice that File's AAA ERA is now down to 0.40 with a WHIP under 1.00 in 22IP. I know he does not have the K numbers but he has only walked 5 in 22IP and he is obviously doing something right. Not all pitchers are power pitchers. Do you think that the Jays are not using him correctly? Maybe he is not a Long relief guy and more of a 6th-7th inning MR where he was used mostly his rookie year and did a nice job. Syracuse has used him a MR in the 8th and as a closer in the 9th. Maybe he just does not come in focused when he is entering games already down 8-1 in the 4th inning and the opposing batters already locked in and relaxed?? It just seems that he has always had great minor league stats even without the K numbers and his first stint in the majors was good. Any thoughts??

Top of 4 AA:

Brandon League pitching.

Majewski strikes out looking (League's 4th K on the night). Walter Young walks on a 3-2 pitch. That was League's 2nd walk, to go with 2 hits allowed, on the evening. Eli Whiteside hits a long home run to left. Kris Wilken grounds a single up the middle. Rick Adair makes a trip to the mound, and Travis Thompson warms in the bullpen. Mike Huggins flies out to Justin Singleton in center. Matt Walker strikes out looking.

4-2 F-Cats after 3 and 1/2.

By the way, BBRadio is a great way to improve your BBA. Lots of posts, and the content requires little imagination to generate.

Bottom of 4 AA:

Mikael Jova (who homered earlier) bloops a double to right. Justin Singleton singles to right, Jova holds third, the throw is cut, Singleton continues on to second and is thrown out. Chiaffreddo hits a ball deep to center, and it flies right out of the park, the F-Cats' 4th homer of the game (Griffin and Hill have the others). Mike Snyder pops up to the 2nd baseman in short right-center. Danny Solano runs the count to 3-2 and grounds out to second.

6-2 F-Cats after 4.

Kris Wilken walks. Michael Huggins lines a single down the right-field line, runners on the corners, nobody out. Matt Walker strikes out swinging. Brandon Fahey strikes out looking on a fine back-door breaking ball. Dan Jackson warming for New Hampshire. Keith Reed hits a high hopper; Hattig at third leaps and snares it and throws out the slow Huggins at 2nd.

6-2 F-Cats at the stretch.

3,351 at Gill Stadium today, slightly above average. Curiously, the top 3 teams in the Northern Division-Binghamton, New Hampshire and Norwich are the bottom 3 in attendance in the Eastern League.

Bottom of 8 AA:

Dominic Rich grounds out to second. Aaron Hill walks. JF Griffin (in left-field today) walks on 4 pitches. John Hattig is plunked, bases loaded, 1 out for Mikael Jova. Bowie pitching coach Larry McCaul takes a long slow walk to the mound and discusses things with Ormond and retreats to the dugout. Jova strikes out swinging. Justin Singleton flies out to left.

6-2 F-Cats after 8.
Mike Green - Monday, August 02 2004 @ 09:28 PM EDT (#46483) #
Top of 9 AA:

Eli Whiteside strikes out swinging. Kris Wilken is plunked on the leg. Mike Huggins hits a 2 run homer to left. Walker strikes out swinging for the golden sombrero. Brandon Fahey gets behind 0-2, takes a pitch in the dirt, and then another low and outside, then strikes out swinging.

6-4 F-Cats final.

The F-Cats seem to have League on a pitch count of about 70. As he's 21 years old, that's a wise move. They'll be counting on their bullpen though for a pile of innings in this pennant race.

Who's not liking the new crop of hitters drafted this year? I thought it was a glaring weakness that JP had to address (especially 1st,OF). Mathews, Lind, Cannon, Metropolous,Nielson, Hall, Klosterman, Anderson to compliment holdovers such as Rodriguez, Thomas, will make things interesting in full season ball next year. Looks like JP's goal to re-stock this farm system after they attacked pitching mostly in the 2 previous drafts is close to happening after another draft.
_Wayne H. - Monday, August 02 2004 @ 10:53 PM EDT (#46486) #
Isn't next year's draft expected to be quite a bit stronger than this year's draft. If I read it correctly somewhere, the 2005 draft will be very hitter heavy.

What is the early word on that possibility, especially with the Jays likely to have a rather favourable draft slot?
_Anthony - Monday, August 02 2004 @ 11:28 PM EDT (#46487) #
It is nice to get some hitters, but it is also important that they can play the field. The two leading hitters by average at Dunedin, also lead the team in errors. The same is true in NH, if you discount a player who has only played five games.
_Chris H - Monday, August 02 2004 @ 11:32 PM EDT (#46488) #
Curious, is everybody still hoping the Jays can make a push to the .500 level?

Personally, I would much rather see the Jays finish 5th or 6th last and pick up one of the best college players in the 2005 draft. I am sure Toronto will not select this high again for many years...

I wouldn't overly concern myself with number of errors. Players playing positions in A and even AA ball won't necessarily play those same positions when and if they make the major leagues. For instance, Gary Sheffield was drafted as a shortstop but hasn't stopped him from becoming a star major league hitter as an outfielder. If you're good enough you'll always have a place to play. I would rather have guys that can hit the tar out of the ball because even if you don't need help at their positions you can almost always trade them for a good return.

Also, minor league error totals tend to be fairly meaningless. Alex Gonzalez made 45 errors in a minor league season and did just fine defensively in the majors. If a player has real problems outside of concentration and consistency at a position he can be moved. Otherwise these things take care of themselves with time.

NEW MONTH, SAME GREAT TEAM

The Fisher Cats just concluded a fantastic month of July, with solid
candidates for both the Eastern League Player of the Month and Pitcher of the
Month. Shortstop Aaron Hill carried the hot stick in July, batting a lofty .386
with 2 home runs and 20 RBIs. He led the club in hits (19) and doubles (10)
while compiling a remarkable .568 slugging percentages. All this plus, while on
a brief respite from his Fisher Cat duties, he won the Futures Game MVP Award in
Houston, TX during the All-Star Break.

While Hill has been hitting the lights out of the ball, left-hander Gustavo
Chacin has been virtually unhittable. The 23-year old Chacin posted a perfect
5-0 record with a minuscule 0.98 ERA in six starts during July!! Chacin leads
the EL with 12 wins and has won his last eight decisions.

Entering Tuesday's game with Bowie, New Hampshire was 3-1 on the homestand
and, over the last five games, the Fisher Cats had smacked 10 home runs and
scored 25 runs while batting .275 as a team. Leading the way is rightfielder
Maikel Jova, batting .450 with two homers and four RBIs in his last five starts,
including one of the Fishers' four home runs in Monday night's 6-4 victory over
Bowie.
