Not only deadlier but smarter too smarter too
All along the tomb, all along the ruin

The Jays dropped a 6-5 decision to the Devil Rays as a late comeback wasn't enough to pull out the win.

* Recaps:
Blue Jays' comeback falls short - Fordin
Jay rally falls short against D-Rays - Baker
Rookie Bush-whacked - Rutsey
Delgado remains with Jays - Millson

* Notes:
Miller making his way back - Fordin
Blue Jay Watch - Rutsey
Elliot on Baseball - Elliot

* Trade Deadline - JP said that there wasn't much going on, and he was right. Players can still be traded if they clear waivers, but it sounds pretty quiet on that front as well.
Jays stand pat at trade deadline - Fordin
Nothing on Jays plate - Rutsey

* What's it like to hit a home run? Carlos Delgado tells Mike Ulmer. If I watched muted SportsCenter correctly last night (because it's almost unwatchable with volume now) Delgado has homered in his last 5 ABs against Jorge Sosa.

* Greg Maddux, without a lot of fanfare, goes for his 300th win today. While Clemens gets nearly all of the hype, Maddux has arguably been more effective over his career.

Career ERA+
Maddux - 143
Clemens - 140

Top 5 ERA+ Seasons
Maddux / Clemens
273 / 226
259 / 211
191 / 177
191 / 176
171 / 175

Looks like the only way you'll see this game is if you get WGN as it's not going to be shown nationally, or even on Extra Innings. WTF, isn't that what Extra Innings is for???

* Today's Game - Sean Douglass takes the mound for Toronto to be countered with Dewon Brazelton for Tampa. The game is at 1:15, not 7:15 as listed in this article.

Pistol: there's some garbled html under the "notes" section.

How does Tosca leave Phelps on the bench in the 8th with Trever Miller on the mound? What am I missing here? If Tosca now sees Phelps as only a lefty mashing bat, one who went yard twice the game before, don't you bring that bat to the plate with a lefty up and a chance to tie or take the lead? Unbelievable.

More than 50.000 in a pre-season friendly at the Dome. Did any Boxites watch Celtic-Roma yesterday. It was on German television. Good atmosphere too. Maybe Rogers can turn some Irish/Scottish Celtic fans into Jays fans? Our reporter was also impressed with great stadium in Toronto.

Should be fixed now. Thanks.

I watched Celtic-Roma. A bore. Both sides had already been thrashed badly on this tour (Celtic by Liverpool, Roma had been completely shredded by Chelsea in Pittsburgh, an awe-inspiring game) so I think they wanted nothing more than not to be embarrassed.

The grass looked good.

Miller only faced two batters: Delgado and Zaun. Obviously, you don't pinch-hit for Delgado. Zaun is a switch-hitter, so bringing Phelps in doesn't provide a platoon advantage. And if you pinch-hit Phelps for Zaun, Piniella will just bring in a right-handed pitcher to face Phelps - and I'm not sure Phelps vs. Tough Righty is better than Zaun vs. Miller.

From the I learned something new this morning files:

The Yankees are so willing to spend their own money on a new Yankee Stadium because revenue that goes towards stadium debt is not subject to MLB's revenue sharing plan. Therefore instead of handing the money over to Bud they just build a new stadium with. Actual net cost: $0.

I'm sure that's oversimplified, but it makes a ton of sense for them.

I was at both Celtic/Roma and Porto/Liverpool. The Porto/Liverpool match was a much better affair, with the winner scored in the 86th minute. It was a better game but a poor crowd, really. Celtic/Roma was the opposite: fairly lousy game, great crowd (considering the lousiness of the game).

The grass was indeed purty.

I was at the Celtic/Roma game too, the game itself was pretty dull, but half the fun I would say was just being there; people cheering for no reason other than to enjoy the common experience so rarely available to fans in Ontario. I even got to meet some of the players before hand, just happened to park at the Intercontinental Hotel where they were boarding the bus!

Could it really be? Is there no cuttlefish to award today?

I missed this week in baseball, can anyone do a quick recap on anything insightful from Delgado or Barnett?

Could it really be? Is there no cuttlefish to award today?

Craig, sadly (bitterly) I must tell you that I did not receive the cuttlefish I believe I deserved on 7/30.

So have we scuttled the cuttlefish?
Craig B - Sunday, August 01 2004 @ 09:52 PM EDT (#46837) #
I was referring only to today's. There is, as yet, no winner.

Here's your prize for Friday. A fine specimen of cuttlefish manhood he is!

Is this the first time the Bauxites were stumped?

That's like a 1 in 1,000,000 chance of happening. Perhaps everyone didn't get enough R.E.M. sleep the night before.

Pistol is the winnah! Team Cuttlefish... TRANSMUTE!

Pistol is the winner? When he posted the lyrics in the first place? I hereby lodge a formal protest to, with and against The Cabal.

Not even the obscure "Avengers, Assemble!" reference shall avert my grumpiness on this matter.
Craig B - Monday, August 02 2004 @ 10:34 AM EDT (#46841) #
Whoops! Call it a cuttlefish mishap, and be thankful it didn't happen to your car.

The Cabal, since it does not exist, cannot hear protests against itself.
