But still it's farewell
And maybe we'll come back
To earth, who can tell?

I guess there is no one to blame
We're leaving ground
Will things ever be the same again?

The Jays cruised to a 3-0 victory over the Devil Rays behind the Josh brothers, Towers and Phelps. It was Toronto's 5th consectutive victory over Tampa.

* Recaps:
Phelps powers Towers to win - Fordin
Jay pitching Towers over D-Rays - Baker
Jays' Phelps has power in bunches - Rutsey
Steady Towers comes up big again - Millson

* Notes:
Halladay on the horizon - Fordin

* The trade deadline is 4 pm today. Several trades were made yesterday. It looks like things will remain quiet in Toronto as the GM says "There's nothing going on at all". However, Jeff Blair says there's a 'crack of light through the opening' of the door to a Delgado trade .

* The current plan for Halladay to return is early September, with the goal to get a handful of starts in before the end of the season. Yesterday Halladay joined the team in Tampa.

* Here's a story on Carlos Tosca. Tosca's been the team's manager for a little over 2 years now and I don't think I ever ran across his childhood background.

* Today's Game - David Bush goes to the hill for the Jays while the Rays counter with Jorge Sosa who will fill in for the traded Victor Zambrano.

The final countdown is on for Simon Pond, Stubby Clapp, Glenn Williams and Jeff Guiel, who leave for Europe and the Athens Olympics in a few days. Good luck to all the Olympic Jays!

From Blair's article:

And while relations between the Jays and [Delgado] have soured (the team is now expected to forego compensation for the loss of Delgado as a free agent by not offering him salary arbitration this winter)

Whats up with that? I dont think that anyone figured that the Jays would offer arb to Delgado, no matter the relationship between him and the team - too much fear of a reprise of the Maddux situation last year.

Does Blair know something else?

Was this a trade I missed? I assume you meant Victor Zambrano. Regardless, it should be a great game today; third place is within grasp.

I was thinking the same thing. The relationship and arbitration are not related items which makes you question whether there really is a riff.

Was this a trade I missed? I assume you meant Victor Zambrano.

Whoops. It's fixed now.

Carlos Zambrano would have made a whole lot more sense.

Good luck to all the Olympic Jays!

Bob Elliott wrote a Baseball America piece about the national team, whose SkyDome workout at 6:00 p.m. Monday is open to the public.

There isn't a single cheap shot at the local team in the BA piece, but in the Sun yesterday, Elliott was true to form, summing up a column full of trade rumours as follows:

And your Jays? When you're going good, why make changes?

You know, if these newspaper "experts" ever bothered to offer constructive criticism, perhaps a column on the trades J.P. should make, some of us might have a little more respect for them. Mudslinging is much easier than putting your own reputation as an analyst on the line.

I'd be interested to see what the Twins would want for Doug Mientkiewicz.

He's having an off-year, but is a great defensive 1B and a line-drive hitter who walks. He just turned 30 and is signed through next year at 3.5 million a year. Much as I like Cat, I think Minky is a better player.

It looks like Bell has sorted out whatever connectivity problems they've been having, and we're able to reach Da Box (in addition to all sorts of other sites) again.
