For a new affair
She knew it would finish
Before it began
Something tells me you lost the plan

Yesterday ended up being a busy day. The Jays won, they traded Terry Adams to the Red Sox, Pat Hengen retired, and it's Hall of Fame day for Paul Molitor and Dennis Eckersley.

Oh yeah, the Jays play a game today as well.

* Game Recaps:
Blue Jays make it two straight - Fordin
Towers tosses a nice tribute - Baker
Towers tosses a thrifty gem - Rutsey
Blue Jays defeat Devil Rays 4-2 - Millson

* Notes
Fordin Notes: Reflections on Hentgen
Blue Jays watch - Rutsey
Fans Don't Forget - Gray

* Terry Adams was traded to the Red Sox last night for AA 3B John Hattig. Discussion of the trade can be found in this thread including many links to information on Hattig. It looks like Hattig will be better than the bag of balls some fans were looking for in return. The Sun says that he'll make the relatively short drive to play for NH.

"He can swing the bat," Ricciardi said of Hattig, a switch hitter. "We've been following him for some time. When we asked about him a week ago, Boston initially said no."

It was reported during the Portland Seadog broadcast that the Jays were including cash in the deal, however, the Boston Globe reports that the Sox are paying the balance of Adams' contract. Searching some more, the Boston Herald says the Jays ARE including money in the deal. Perhaps someone can get to the bottom of this.

* Yesterday Pat Hengen retired. I don't have anything to add to the Bauxite's sentiments. However, many in the press do:

Hentgen departs with his dignity - Griffin (I'm guessing, it doesn't say, but it sounds like him)
Hentgen's fire dies after 14 classy years - Baker
Jays Praise a 'Class Act' - Rutsey
Hentgen has seen enough - Rutsey

* It's Hall of Fame day for Paul Molitor and Dennis Eckersley
Molitor was a Beaut - Elliot
First Ballot Opens Doors - Kekis
Molitor Rides DH into Hall - Edes

* Today's Game - David Bush starts for the Jays and the Devil Rays will send out Victor Zambrano.

So does the Cheer Club have anything planned for Hentgen today?

I'm off to the game today and shall do my best to rattle the D-Rays from my seats behind the firstbase dugout...

I can't wait to see Bush pitch in person... hopefully he doesn't punk it after that great game he had.

I'd like to see Bush pitch as well, think I'll go to SkyDome. It sure looks like he knows his ABCs. Look for the Devil Rays to have Broken Arrows through their hearts..

Well, let that go down as certain proof that Keith Talent does not Google the song lyrics! I was way off, looking at the words and imagining ABC "Poison Arrow". I won't give it away, but it's not ABC.

It looks like John Hart will remain GM of the Rangers leaving Grady Fuson in the lurch. Fuson was supposedly in line to take over as GM before the Rangers had their surprisingly good year.

Fuson was one of the three-headed All-Star front office team in Oakland along with Beane and Ricciardi. He oversaw the drafts which saw Eric Chavez, Mark Mulder, Barry Zito, Tim Hudson, and others become minor leaguers who zoomed to stardom. Tejada may or may not have been signed on his watch. He also showed he's not a slave to the college only approach when he picked Chavez and Bonderman (and now Danks in Texas) as first rounders.

Having been through the Oakland rebuilding, performance focus, and roster management philosophies he's in good position to really help some team out there. It would be great to have him in Toronto but there just doesn't seem to be room as he will undoubtedly look for a job where he is the GM or at least will be the GM very shortly. JP will be around for at least three more seasons in TO and the Jays seem to be set in terms of refining their own method of drafting.

But there's no shortage of teams out there that could use Fuson. Tampa Bay for one might become fairly scary with Fuson at the helm and the level of impact talent they already have to build on. The Mariners look like they need someone who is better at putting together a team and getting more out of drafts than pitchers. Maybe the Tigers depending on whether Dombrowski bought himself a grace period with the uptick in performance this season.

The downside of Hentgen's retirement timing was that I couldn't get to work to make a banner on the weeked. We're going to add Hentgen to the Level of Excellence either Monday or Tuesday night. Or maybe both.

Our good friend Terry Adams just made an appearance in Fenway, starting the 8th inning:
Strikeout, walk, double. 17 pitches.

Speaking of a man whose name ends in -erry, John Kerry is at the Red Sox game. Imagine if George Bush becomes a Yankees fan -- that would be the greatest race to the White House ever.
