Jays win! Toronto won last night 7-4 behind a 6 run third inning.

* Recaps:
Jays break out of slump - Spencer Fordin
Jays put a fork in Devil Rays - Geoff Baker
Rays of hope for Jays - Mike Rutsey
Unearned runs pave way to win - Jeff Blair

* Notes:
Jays' eyes on Miller - Fordin
Blue Jays Watch - Rutsey

* Last night's guest radio announcer was one familiar to Jays fans as Tom Cheek made his return to the booth for a two inning stint.

* In case you missed it, the Jays signed David Purcey their first pick in the draft. He's headed to Auburn for the rest of the season. This leaves only 'the General' Cory Patton as the only remaining player the Jays are looking to sign (the rest are draft and follows). The Jays are waiting for Patton's stress fracture in his foot to heal before signing him.

* It's Hall of Fame weekend and Paul Molitor and Dennis Eckersley are being inducted. Molitor was a big part of the 1993 championship team, winning the World Series MVP after hitting .500 against the Phillies. Richard Griffin says that Molitor being inducted defies the DH bias.

* Today's game sees a pair of right handed pitchers with matching 4.97 ERAs facing each other in Josh Towers and Rob Bell.

The Jays showed some Patience last night. Perhaps GN'R will play the 7th inning stretch sometime soon?
Ok-that was a poor attempt at being funny with it. But it was good to see the Jays bust back into the win column. There still's no doubt in my mind this team'll finish 3rd. The Rays and Orioles are just not that good and there are a lot of games left for the Jays poor luck to even out-like last night's unearned runs.

A Bell-Towers matchup? Hmmm.

It's a small sample, but has anyone noticed that as Towers' BB rate has gone up, his HR rate has come down? There really is such a thing as throwing too many strikes, especially so when you stuff is really hittable.

It's nice to come home and find out the Jays won. It's been an odd year, with the jays falling way below expectations, having such a cool wet summer, and my baseball team doing so well(13-2). Lets hope some young guys get a chance to show what they can do.
COMN for some cuttlefish and friends.

Awesome pictures sweat. I particularly enjoyed this:

Also, the Taningia Danae, a 6' long 500_lb cuttlefish, with catclaw-like hooks arranged in pairs down the length of its tentacles, and two lemon-sized photophores which are the largest light-generating organs ever documented.

Cooool.

Congrats, you win a cuttlefish to be named later.

He can have 200% of my Batters Box salary.

Stark's new column contains some updates on trade rumours. Scroll down to the very last piece of news to read about Terry Adams. He says the Phillies and Red Sox are interested, but JP has rejected offers of second-tier prospects so far.

A Bell-Towers matchup? Hmmm.

And who better to put the cap on the game with a save than Speier?
_Smack - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 12:17 PM EDT (#49292) #
Haha, gotta love JP.

We will get something decent in return for Adams. He has always been a good relief pitcher but this year there have been way too many HR and inherited runners scored. With his ERA under 4, he still looks decent, and can lockdown lefties. I think he can switch a deal for one good prospect atleast.

1:20 update on the FAN: Hentgen will announce his retirement at a news conference around 2:00 at the Dome.
_Geoff - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 01:34 PM EDT (#49294) #
Hentgen and all Jays fans should look back at his tenure in Toronto with pride - while his return stint as a Jay went how no one wanted it to, I'm glad he is able to retire as a Jay. Hats off to Hentgen!

Any idea who starts on Monday?
_Matthew E - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 01:35 PM EDT (#49295) #
Holy moley. I'll be sorry to see him go. Better to jump than be pushed, I guess.
_sweat - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 01:41 PM EDT (#49296) #
You have to respect Hentgen, not to many guys know when it's time to give it up. Congrats to Hentgen for a great career, and congrats for retiring in the right uniform.
_Rob - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 02:01 PM EDT (#49297) #
Monday's start...Douglass? Who else could it be?

- Miller is hurt.
- Kershner is off the 40-man, so adding Douglass is the same as adding Kershner, and the latter isn't really suited to starting.
- Halladay and McGowan are hurt.
- Rosario? Never going to happen.

So I'm guessing Sean Douglass will start on Monday.
Batista-Lilly-Bush-Towers-Douglass.
Not what J.P. had in mind, I'm sure.

Hey, I finally found out where the whole cuttlefish thing started here. COMN for the original article, titled "Name Game" where we had fun with the spellchecker in an AP article which had the following Jays:
Frank Mention, Alex Rio, Carlos Deluged, Jason Friseur.

Justin Speier became Justin Sepia: "Sepia is a stain produced using the inky secretion of the cuttlefish. Here is a picture of a cuttlefish:"

There, the mystery is solved. It came from Microsoft Word's spell check system. It was not because Moffat is crazy (well, maybe) as Leigh posted the thread.
_Moffatt - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 02:10 PM EDT (#49299) #
I'd love to give Leight props, but the cuttlefish picture came as a reaction to something I had said earlier. :)

The cuttlefish thing is because I am crazy. Crazy for cuttlefish, that is.

So I surf over to tsn and catch the Hentgen headline except at first glance I thought it said: "Halladay Announces Retirement"

Needless to say, it was a bit of a scare :)
_S.K. in N.J. - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 02:15 PM EDT (#49301) #
344 games
131 wins (105 with Toronto)
2075.1 innings
34 complete games
4.32 era
2 world series rings

Solid career for Pat.

It was definitely time for him to retire, but from a sentimental aspect, this hurts. Solid pro, great guy, and had a genuine love for the organization.

Hopefully there's a Blue Jays coaching job with Pat's name on it down the road.

Monday's start...Douglass? Who else could it be?

It could be Lilly on short rest. Since they have next Thursday off, the rotation would be able to get back on track for the weekend.
_Moffatt - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 02:31 PM EDT (#49303) #
Rob: I believe this was the first Batter's Box mention of a cuttlefish.

I guess it's time to let you know how the cuttlefish thing really started: Awhile ago I mentioned something political which ended up causing a small flamewar in which I was one of the participants.

Craig and I ended up talking about the situation over e-mail, and I decided that since politics makes people cranky, I'd try my best to never bring up the subject again and would instead just post pictures of cuttlefish.

And now you know the rest of the story.
_Mike in CT - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 02:43 PM EDT (#49304) #
Pat Hentgen was a great Blue Jay, definitely one of my favorites. It's too bad it didn't work out the second time around, but nothing can take away from what he gave to the Jays franchise. I'm glad he got to retire a Blue Jay. His accomplishments will never be forgotten.

Best of luck in life after baseball, Pat.
_Moffatt - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 02:46 PM EDT (#49305) #
I've started a new thread for discussion of the Hentgen retirement announcement.
_Nolan - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 04:33 PM EDT (#49306) #
The combination of Hentgen's retirement and reading the Griffin piece of Molitor and Eck got me thinking about the Jays and the the Hall.

If (when) Alomar goes into the Hall, will he go in as the first Jay? Or will Delgado possibly have a chance at this?
_Rob - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 04:55 PM EDT (#49307) #
Well...May 28 is your "mentioning of the cuttlefish" date (that's a terrible sentence, but moving on...)
And the one I thought was the first cuttlefish in Box history was in June.

Consider Rob owned. :)
_Rob - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 04:56 PM EDT (#49308) #
I was talking to Moffatt, by the way. I forgot to put his quote in my post.
_John Northey - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 07:53 PM EDT (#49309) #
Alomar the first with a Jays hat? I'd be more surprised if he wasn't than if he is. I think a year ago he said he'd wear it to the hall due to the fact it was the best part of his career. 2 WS wins, lots of gold gloves, near MVP situations, etc. The negatives were in the last year (sitting out over the Jays giving up in '95, the crazy woman who threatened to kill him) and after he left (the infamous spitting incident). He'd need a major career jump and more WS wins to use someone else's I'd think.

I still hope there is a way for Alomar to finish in Toronto ala Tony Fernandez and now Pat Hentgen. Not too valuable to the team, but gets to go on their own terms.
_Justin B. - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 08:54 PM EDT (#49310) #
Adams traded to the Red Sox for 24-year old 3B John Hattig (currently in AA with the Sox). The trade makes sense for both sides; Blue Jays get an open roster spot to preview a younger pitcher, while saving a bit of money presumably, and Boston gets a useful reliever for their thin bullpen. For all the vile directed towards Adams, he's a big improvement on some of the back-end guys that Boston's been trotting out there lately.

I didn't want to clutter up the Hentgen thread with a different topic, so:

This Reflections on Hentgen article by Spencer Fordin, which is very much worth a read, quotes Delgado as saying:
"Fletch was different. He had a round-trip ticket and didn't use the second leg," he said. "He never came back. Fletcher said he wanted to spend time with his family, and you can't blame him for that."
Just what is Delgado referring to? "Round trip ticket"? I seem to remember Fletch being offered a coaching gig, but perhaps I'm making that up.

I assume Delgado is referring to Hentgen having two separate stints with the Blue Jays, while Fletcher had just one.
_G.T. - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 12:44 AM EDT (#49313) #
I don't remember Fletch's circumstances, but I'd think Delgado means that Fletcher retired while away from the team (thus after using the first half of the leg), while Hentgen's decision came while with the team?
