Let's play two. The sun is shining, and the Jays won last night. Happy 40th Birthday, Barry Bonds! As my coffee cup says, heavy breathing is not necessarily a sign of passion. Congratulations, Paul Molitor, on your induction!

On with the game. Josh Towers and Rob Bell bring matching 4.97 ERAs to the hill. Will the day off help the O-dog emerge from his slumbers?

I wish I could be there!

Fun game last night; let's do it again.

Ah ha ha ha Baldelli can't catch a fly ball by Zaun and Johnson comes around to score. 1-1.

Incredibly quick work for Towers this inning.

Yeah he looks alright, touch wood.

Shame that Hudson ground into a DP last inning. He really is struggling right now.

Yay for Cat and Wells! 3-1.

Oh this is more like it; I have so missed the relentless hitting Jays whom I have barely seen since last year.

I still get chills when I see Joe's shot. Nice interview with Pat on TSN.
_Andrew K - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 04:58 PM EDT (#49242) #
I'm not getting the interview with Pat because mlb.tv carry Fox Sports Net with the man with the irritating voice, Dewayne Staats.

If you're not keeping an eye on Bosox/Yanks, do so now on FOX. Wait for Sturtze to face Bill Mueller.

It's weird.. it seems like the Sox are always to blame for these things.. the heated rivalry, the drought, being so many games behind, falling behind early in the game at home after a tough loss last night and bang.. all the frustration comes out and in the end they come out looking like sore losers.
_Andrew K - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 05:08 PM EDT (#49245) #
How did the sox/yanks fight get started?
_Ryan Lind - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 05:09 PM EDT (#49246) #
I wasn't paying attention. What happened?

(In the Sox/Yanks)
_RhyZa - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 05:14 PM EDT (#49247) #
Arroyo threw at A Rod behind 3-0... then Varitek and A Rod exchanged words, with Varitek shoving Rodriguez in the face.. benches cleared, bodies flying (Kapler, Ortiz etc) to tell you the truth I was watching Pat's interview the Jays game and quickly flipped over to catch the replay so I don't know all the details. There will be more to come I'm sure especially if the Yanks pull away and with the expendible, hotheaded Sturtze on the mound, but last year Clemens didn't retaliate when many thought he would so we'll see.

(FYI: previous name I used was llsToNe, from now on I'll use RhyZa)

Ramirez bats 2nd and Garciaparra 3rd this inning, so we'll see who Sturtze throws at in retaliation. I was surprised he didn't throw at Mueller.

Boooo. CHEAP. CHEAP.

Jays getting some poor calls in the 6th, and Tosca ejected...

Argh I wish these idiot Tampa Bay commentators wouldn't pronounce Cat's name "Cantalanotto", it drives me mad. Don't they practice the names in preparation?

Good boy, Jason.

Mr. Freeze looks great, striking out Baldelli. Appearently the Jays are not afraid to use him for more than an inning.

If he gets on a real role (ie the Jays start providing more save opps), he could challenge Bobby Crosby for ROY.

What has happened to Miller this year? 40 appearances and an ERA below 3? Would we really prefer Ligtenberg or Adams over him now?
Mike Green - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 06:27 PM EDT (#49255) #
Yes, a winning streak.
_Andrew K - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 06:30 PM EDT (#49256) #
A good win at that, with everyone doing their job reasonably well.

If only this can continue we have a shot at regaining 3rd place.

The Redsox Yanks game is an absolute humdinger. The yankees must be almost out of pitchers...
_Ryan Lind - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 07:19 PM EDT (#49258) #
Watching the Sox and Yankees makes me feel a lot better as a Jay fan.

The Sox have had the bases load with no outs, and the bases loaded with two outs, and they scored a run neither time. The Yankees had the bases loaded with no outs just now, and didn't score any runs either.

So it's not just Toronto!!

Terry Adams jost got traded to the Red Sox for a minor leaguer.
_Ron - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 08:48 PM EDT (#49260) #
Do you have a link for the Adams trade? Ive searched all over the net but can't find anything.

I haven't seen anything yet, but heard the announcement on TV. I posted a thread.
_StephenT - Saturday, July 24 2004 @ 08:51 PM EDT (#49262) #
I caught the end of some highlights on TSN when the Yanks were up 9-4, and the announcer (don't know the name) said there was "no doubt" that the Yanks would be up 10-and-a-half games when it ended. It was obvious right then the announcer didn't know baseball. (And it turned out the Sox won 11-10, now 8.5 back.)

What has happened to Miller this year? 40 appearances and an ERA below 3?

I was thinking that too when I saw his stats announced. But, if he comes in in the middle of innings a lot then I think that would benefit his ERA to the detriment of the ERA's of pitchers who allowed existing runners to get on base, assuming those runners do end up scoring some normal percentage of the time.

Relating to those calls that Tosca argued, from where I was sitting (back of the plate, roughly the same distance as Tosca to 1st base), it looked like Baldelli was pretty clearly safe on both the calls. Not surprisingly the fans were nevertheless complaining heavily. I think Tosca probably figured it was a good opportunity to fire up the crowd and the team. I haven't seen the replays, so who knows, maybe Tosca was right -- but it hardly matters.

I was at the game so I didn't hear commentary on this...The pick-off play happened, the Jays more or may not have been screwed out of a call -- again (it was close, I was on the other side of the diamond so couldn't tell one way or the other). But what took Tosca a good 120 seconds to get off the bench? Was he waiting for the replay?
Coach - Sunday, July 25 2004 @ 10:50 AM EDT (#49265) #
I was in the press box with Robert. I thought the Jays should have got the first call; Carlos made a nice scoop and Baldelli was out, though by less than half a step. On the pickoff, he probably did get that long arm back to the bag just in time, but his body was pretty far away, and the tag was very close -- in other words, a perfect opportunity for a "makeup" call. When that wasn't forthcoming, it felt like adding insult to injury.

Adam, you're right -- it did take quite a long time for Tosca to leave the dugout. I guess he was contemplating the pros and cons of getting thrown out, which is inevitable in that situation. As gid suggests, it might fire up the team and certainly the crowd, but there's one possible downside. Holbrook is behind the plate today, so I hope he doesn't hold a grudge. Bush needs the corners and if you give Zambrano a big zone, he's unhittable.
