Okay, I'm just kidding ... no need to start yet another political ruckus here at Da Box. David Bush makes his Toronto premiere tonight, the first of what project to be many quality starts at the Skydome. After an excellent debut against the Expos in sweltering San Juan, Bush meets another team having trouble scoring runs -- but one whose members, especially Bret Boone, are starting to break out. Ryan Franklin takes the mound for the Mariners, as the Blue Jays go for an all-too-rare home sweep.

I have no problem endorsing Bush in '04. Come on David, make us all forget about Kerry... Ligtenberg.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:11 PM EDT (#53043) #
Who's doing colour commentary? He sounds very earnest.
_JackFoley - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:15 PM EDT (#53044) #
He sounds slightly ill.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:20 PM EDT (#53045) #
Coming in to work ill is a sign of the earnest.
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:23 PM EDT (#53046) #
I think Bush looked a little nervous in that inning, maybe the effect of pitching in the home ballpark.

Yes! Gomes!
_JackFoley - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:23 PM EDT (#53047) #
For those with real jobs, sure.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:24 PM EDT (#53048) #
David Bush is a singularly handsome young man.
_Four Seamer - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:26 PM EDT (#53049) #
David Bush is a singularly handsome young man.

Keith, were you the guy who earlier this week wanted to kiss Orlando Hudson on the lips?
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:26 PM EDT (#53050) #
Let's see... bases loaded, nobody out, Carlos coming up?

I like...
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:28 PM EDT (#53051) #
that was some 'Joe'.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:30 PM EDT (#53052) #
Josh Phelps seems like a logical #5 hitter to me.
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:30 PM EDT (#53053) #
Oh geez. Although don't blame Zaun. He had to swing because earlier in the count the Ump. called that pitch a strike, so he had to be sure.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:31 PM EDT (#53054) #
Hinske wins this battle I bet.
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:32 PM EDT (#53055) #
And the dreaded "bases loaded, nobody out" scenario strikes again.

Unbelievable.
_JackFoley - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:32 PM EDT (#53056) #
Well hit by Hinske, too bad.

At least Franklin doesn't look particularly good, and he isn't a likely candidate to get stronger as the game goes on.
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:32 PM EDT (#53057) #
To put it like Tarzan, AAAUUGGHHHH!!
_Nigel - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:33 PM EDT (#53058) #
The innings don't come much more demoralizing than that one. Wow
_Four Seamer - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:35 PM EDT (#53059) #
This team is difficult to watch some days. Oh well, eight innings still to play.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:35 PM EDT (#53060) #
if your name is Catalanotto (not playing everyday even when healthy), Woodward, Phelps or Cash you can't buy proper exposure.

if your name is Gomez, Menechino, Zaun, you can't get a rest

if your name is Hinske, Delgado, Rios, you're golden no matter how long you go without a hit

if your name is Josh Towers you're always wondering when the next trip to Syracuse is.
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:38 PM EDT (#53061) #
A nickname for David Bush. Any suggestions?
_Andrew Ward - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:40 PM EDT (#53062) #
How the hell do you have a single to the pitcher? (watching on MLB gameday)
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:41 PM EDT (#53063) #
Ecch. How to score a run without the ball leaving the infield.
_Four Seamer - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:41 PM EDT (#53064) #
I hear you, Andrew. It followed up a single to Chris Gomez, too. Throw it to first, guys!
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:44 PM EDT (#53065) #
I'm not liking the start of this game. Heh.

It seems like every time the BJ's squander an opportunity like they did, the other team punishes them for it.
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:47 PM EDT (#53066) #
David Bush, 'The Unlucky Gardener'

Whew. FINALLY out of THAT inning.
_Andrew Ward - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:49 PM EDT (#53067) #
Anyone watching on TV able to elaborate on Bush's problem? Other than being down 4 zip and playing for a team whose record for scoring with the bases loaded and no one out must be in the Guiness book of records by now.
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:52 PM EDT (#53068) #
He doesn't seem to be fooling anybody. The Mariners are making consistent contact and are lacing the ball around the field. Luckilly this Franklin fellow seems to have the same problem.
_Paul S - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:54 PM EDT (#53069) #
It's only one out this time! Maybe that'll break the hex.
_Andrew Ward - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 07:54 PM EDT (#53070) #

The post-injury Delgado is looking a lot like the pre-injury Delgado. Ugly.
_Paul S - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:00 PM EDT (#53075) #
I just strangled my bobblehead... which sounds oddly like a euphamism for something else.

The Delgado one you got with Flex Packs. I choked it good.
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:00 PM EDT (#53076) #
Here's a number for you.

2 Innings, 6 LOB for Carlos.
_Four Seamer - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:03 PM EDT (#53077) #
I guess George W. isn't the only Bush Carlos has it in for...
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:07 PM EDT (#53078) #
Okay, I know Bush's line doesn't look good so far,

3 IP, 7 H, 4 ER, 1 K

But how many of those hits are INFIELD hits?

Besides, I think he might be settling down.
_Nigel - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:08 PM EDT (#53079) #
Can we go back to having Clark, Berg or Gomez playing 1B? :)
_Emerald - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:09 PM EDT (#53080) #
It's not all bad. Look, Zaun just hit a double! That's like his first extra base hit in a week!

Atta boy Alex!
_Paul S - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:11 PM EDT (#53082) #
They need to keep live mics away from Phelps and Hinske.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:17 PM EDT (#53083) #
Seriously, who is doing colour? Is that a sick Cerutti? The cadence and rhythm of speech sure sounds like Cerutti. But the pitch of the voice sounds like an entirely different person. What gives?
_JackFoley - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:22 PM EDT (#53084) #
WOW!!
_Four Seamer - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:22 PM EDT (#53085) #
Another infield hit! You guys watching on tv are going to have to help me out here - what are these infielders doing?
_Magpie - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:24 PM EDT (#53086) #
Do you believe that?

Ichiro out advancing?

The shade of Jesse Barfield just got up and walked.

Alex owed Bush that one, too.
_Four Seamer - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:32 PM EDT (#53087) #
Well, I'm glad I didn't make that post I was working on mocking Franklin for obsessing over that noted speedster Gomez.

Has Gomez been taking lessons from Carlos on how to run the bases?
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:48 PM EDT (#53088) #
Heh, here we go again...bases loaded.

Surely they're due. Break the cycle Phelps!

Triple Phelps!

_Magpie - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:51 PM EDT (#53091) #
And for the first time in his (brief, very brief) MLB career, David Bush pitches with a lead.
_S.K. in N.J. - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 08:56 PM EDT (#53092) #
Man, it's so good to see the Jays hitting again.

Phelps, Rios, Hinske, and Hudson is going to be a fun group to watch over the next few years. A lot of potential there.

Rios' OPS is up to .705. He is showing some doubles power, which is a good sign. Once he bulks up, look out.

Does anyone else see Brad Radke potential in David Bush?
_greenfrog - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:01 PM EDT (#53093) #
Phelps now has 260 AB and 45 RBI.

Prorated to roughly a full season (550 AB), we could expect Phelps to rack up 95 RBI.

This is just weird.
_Moffatt - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:02 PM EDT (#53094) #
Just got home in time to see the Phelps triple.. sweet!

Someone give Cerutti some Sudafed, stat!
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:04 PM EDT (#53095) #
Sorry Joe.

OK, this guy talks way more than Cerutti. He's a keener. I think Cerutti lets Faulds do most of the heavy lifting. But tonight Faulds is kicking back. Maybe this is a tandem that works better...
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:05 PM EDT (#53096) #
So Moffat thinks it's Cerutti...man I can't believe it.

He's sick but seems to have much more energy. Maybe he's hungover or something. You know when you've been out drinking and you're all chatty the next day?
_Magpie - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:09 PM EDT (#53097) #
Yes, its Cerutti. I've said it before and I'll see it again - he's come a long way from where he started.

Much of it is probably being liberated from the over-bearing Brian Williams, and some of it is just experience.

Buck Martinez was a terrific broadcaster his last five years, and worse than Cerutti for his first five.
_Magpie - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:11 PM EDT (#53098) #
Bush is at 96 pitches. Bring him out for the 7th, go to File, or go straight to Yo!! Vinnie??
_Moffatt - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:15 PM EDT (#53099) #
Sounds the same to me.. just more nasal. Maybe his cold medicine has caffiene it or something.
_greenfrog - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:21 PM EDT (#53100) #
The Jays have a tradition of geeky, safe, bland colour commentators. I've never understood why we can get incisive commentary on the radio (eg Wilner) but not TV. I'd like to see the baseball equivalent of John McEnroe (the commentator). Brainy, knowledgable, ironic, a bit irreverant.
_braden - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:23 PM EDT (#53101) #
Looks to me like Bush isn't going to get his win tonight.
_Fawaz K - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:24 PM EDT (#53102) #
Man, I hope they don't blow this for Bush.
_braden - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:24 PM EDT (#53103) #
then again.......
_Magpie - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:25 PM EDT (#53104) #
That was large. 5-4-3, again.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:26 PM EDT (#53105) #
Well, tonight Cerutti's commenting like his life depends on it. It's like he's on amphetamines or something, getting into his past, giving insight on the weather, doing Faulds' job, referring to recent games...

...I like this new Cerutti, maybe the two days off, while sick, did him some good.

I like how Hinske is getting rid of the ball quicker. Those are huge double plays, it's bigger than a big hit, those double plays are game savers.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:27 PM EDT (#53106) #
Now that WAS intentional. Especially because Phelps was bitching about that last pitch.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:31 PM EDT (#53107) #
I wonder if Tosca resents Phelps' success. Dictators are known for such pettiness (Little Napoleon).
_Moffatt - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:33 PM EDT (#53108) #
Why on earth would Tosca resent Phelps' success?

The organization decided to sit Phelps so they could work on fixing his swing. They did, and it appears to be paying off. Why would Tosca be pissed about that? If the Phelps and the Jays go on a rampage, it just might save Tosca's job for next year.
_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:36 PM EDT (#53109) #
Yeah, you're probably right, I'm just imagining things, because you never really know. I just had that thought watching Phelps go into the dugout with everyone congradulating him, though with Tosca out of sight.
_mathesond - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:37 PM EDT (#53110) #
I just had that thought watching Phelps go into the dugout with everyone congradulating him, though with Tosca out of sight.

Vinnie blows the lead. Had to happen sometime.

I blame Tosca. Don't know why, but it seems like the right thing to do.
_subculture - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 09:42 PM EDT (#53112) #
I've been watching the TSN regular broadcast, and just for the heck of it, switched to the HiDef broadcast on channel 277 even though my TV is NOT HD, though my rogers rental digital cable box is.

Weirdly, the HD broadcast look AMAZING, much better than regular TSN.

Anyone have any idea why this is? Is this the case for you guys too?

By the way, for any of you guys who are renting the PVR from Rogers, I recommend you switch to the HD PVR which Rogers now carries. Same monthly fee, double the HD space.

_Keith Talent - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 10:00 PM EDT (#53121) #
I would never boo Carlos. But I'm seriously wondering what's happened to him. It's not just this year. He was pretty insignificant for the second half of last year, besides a certain game against Tampa Bay late in the season.
_Lefty - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 10:00 PM EDT (#53122) #
Aww, they're just the same people who have boo'ed Wells, Hinske and Phelps. In that order this season. The jeers will turn to cheers soon enough. They always do. Lots of people, even round hear don't understand a regular players season should be judged on a fair sample size. We're still not at the allstar break. Anyway, if you pay your money you can boo whoever you want.
_Moffatt - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 10:01 PM EDT (#53123) #

Wow, that was the best 9th inning I can remember all season.

Terrific at-bats by Berg, Gomez, and Johnson. Of course a couple outs just to add drama, and the King homers to win the game by a single run.

Very very satisfying. Awesome feel-good game.

_Paul D - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 10:27 PM EDT (#53149) #
Okay, so Carlos is the King.
Are Menechino, Clark, Berg and Gomez the hobbits?
And Zaun can be the old wizard, Rios the young tall elf, not sure which of Hudson and Johnson should be the dwarf.

Okay, I guess I"m being ridiculous, but tonight was awesome.
_Magpie - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 10:28 PM EDT (#53150) #
Very hard to exagerate how important the Berg AB was. Carlos hit Guardado's 30th pitch of the inning. Thirteen pitches to Berg.

Wow, we have been so repressed. This win feels so good and we haven't had one like it all year! We've seen it on the other side many times. I mean, that victory seemed INCONCEIVABLE.

It might be bunk, becuase the teams they mentioned for Cabrera were either the Mets or Angels. The Angels I can see. But the Mets already have two talented shortstops.
_R Billie - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 10:42 PM EDT (#53160) #
Wow, what a tremendous at bat by Berg but I can't believe Guadardo threw him 13 pitches in that at bat and pretty much all of them were fastballs. I mean did he throw a pitch other than the fastball more than once or twice that whole inning? Because he wouldn't throw any other pitch Chris Gomez and Reed Johnson were able to focus on the heater and get base hits on pitches around their eyes which they had no business swinging at. I swore at the TV in disbelief when I saw Reed hit that pitch at his eyes off Olerud's glove.

And give Carlos credit...he expected to be tied up inside on his hands on that first pitch and he was ready to open up and let fly on it. And more importantly he did not miss it. When he doesn't miss it there's little doubt about where it's going to end up.

I thought Bush deserved a better fate. Four or five infield hits off him? Then File and Chulk combine to give up four runs and cough up the lead. I don't think I like Bob File being used in high leverage situations either though there's not much else to choose from until Ligtenberg and Speier prove they're trustworthy.

Great game.
_Sneeps - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 10:47 PM EDT (#53161) #
That was a helluva finish. And did you guys hear how loud the crowd was when Carlos hit that shot? Made me proud to be a Jays fan.
_Ryan Lind - Thursday, July 08 2004 @ 10:51 PM EDT (#53162) #
It's a shame that Berg's AB may be forgotten due to Carlos' walkoff homer. That was absolutely tremendous. Nobody here should badmouth Berg for at least a week now.

PS, isn't it funny how we think it was a great game, and the M's fans probably thought it was a terrible one? ;)

But I have a feeling that if this game was between the Sox and Yanks instead of Jays and M's ...

I might remember the Berg at bat LONGER. I've seen Carlos do what he did LOTS of times. Not that it ever gets old.

But the Berg AB was special....

Don't forget Chris Gomez and his 4 hits (OK, he only scored once). He gets a lot of grief for his limited defensive ability (and some questionable baserunning), but he's certainly exceeded any expectations I had of him this season.

subculture, I assume you meant Sportsnet tonight and not TSN.

I have the HD PVR box also. Even though I have an HDTV, it's a 4:3 screen, so when I'm not watching a widescreen broadcast (like the 2 nights on TSN before tonight), I switch the box to standard 480i mode to get a full-screen picture. And yes, if I flip it to a HD channel in that mode, the picture often looks clearer than an ordinary digital channel, even though the box is presumably converting the HD to 480i.

P.S. Here's a trick I found to see TSN in 4:3 full-screen digital with this Rogers box. Instead of the analog channel 30 (here in Ottawa), flip to HDTSN on 278 (read on, there's more). For the last 2 Jays games, they weren't in HD, so I would see black bars not just above and below the picture, but also on each side. Now press the # sign on the controller 2 times. This zooms in the picture. They did it just right so that it perfectly fills the screen. So I saw the Jays in full-screen digital (not analog) on TSN the last 2 nights. (Though the colour seemed a bit off on the HDTSN compared to the analog.)

I loved that shot of JP when there was the celebration at home plate. Everyone around him in the owner's box were patting themselves on the back while JP was focusing carefully on home plate, making sure Delgado actually touches it through the mob. The consummate perfectionist.

I figured he was watching the scrum, hoping no one gets injured.

Check this out, the headline on TSN.ca's Jays page. It might not be up there, but there's no doubt where they got the idea from. :)

"It might not be up there by the time you see it" is what I meant. Too excited about the win.

Outstanding game. Absolutely outstanding. As said above, Berg's at-bat was brilliant; really set the tone for the inning. That was a fantastic win.

Delgado swings and drives a three run homer off Guadardo.

*Imperial Margarine trumpets, crown appears on a beaming Delgado*

Carlos Delgado...closers are his margarine!

Great night guys...Even the old statsman/columnist stood and pump his fists...Return of the King sign is excellent...Maybe print some t-shirts? Or challenge others to make equally brilliant signs?

I have some great Cheer Club shinanegans in line for tomorrow's game. What's a guy gotta do to get an Anahiem Cheer Club thread up and running, I'm itching to share the news...

Hey hey, they just showed the O-Drum on Conan O'Brien!

Say what? EXPLAIN!

One of the possible signs of why the Blue Jays have trouble drawing fans:

On the opening highlights package of the 1am sportsnet, the mention of this miraculous Blue Jay game came dead last, after Whitecap soccer mention.

Out of sheer curiousity, I went and totalled up Rios's stats over the last month. Since June 10, he's batting .326/.361/.457 in 92 AB, after starting his season .180/.240/.220. The walks and homers arent there yet, but it looks like he might be starting to come around with the stick.

And oh yeah. Great finish. Pity that I was on the phone and missed it :(

He was doing a segment about the towers at Skydome, and they showed a quick close shot of the drum. Pretty cool.

That sign was everywhere tonight. I wonder how long until Jim Bloom offers Aaron a fulltime job ;)

King Carlos. I like it. I wonder if the new nickname will stick...

Note about Phelps;

He is now projected to drive in about 85 runs, if he plays consistantly. Even more astounding, he is only on pace to strikeout 123 times. It seems like he's struck out that many times already. Oh well, if he's hitting like he is now then who really cares. Great game.
_t - Friday, July 09 2004 @ 02:13 AM EDT (#53181) #
Damn!! Astounding finish. The crowd seemed bigger than 15k tonight. I still have trouble understanding how Ichiro got gunned down. Sure, great throw and Zaun did block the plate, but it almost seemed to roll home. Anyway, I agree with an earlier comment. The Jays have lost way too many of these roller coaster contests. They sure as hell are due for a few more like tonight. BTW, I think Melvin's pitching Eddie last night in a meaningless ninth backfired.

A close-up shot on Conan? Global's lead in? The Cheer Club is everywhere my friends.

I think the time has come to make a Cheer Club sign. Let us inform the public who we are. Good idea/bad idea?

I agree.. even if its just a plain sign with a logo and then start putting the logo on the other signs too... or something simple...

I saw that King Carlos sign last night on TV and I thought, I wonder if that is Cheer Club, the graphis are darn good (clear, crisp)...

Was it "ours"???
_Daryn - Friday, July 09 2004 @ 08:49 AM EDT (#53185) #
My Bad... Thread 2047 had the poster talk, so its definitely "ours"...

well done guys...

And did you guys hear how loud the crowd was when Carlos hit that shot? Made me proud to be a Jays fan.

What was even better was that the crowd were up and loud before he even saw the first pitch. The rest of the game was forgotten.

Hey, Scott, won't the player's association sue me if I make a shirt of that banner? ;)

I like the idea of challenging people to make more and better signs. I still don't know if Return of the King is as good as the Theodore Roosevelt Ks for Ted Lilly, but I laughed a lot while I was trying to finish it.

Dave Berg's at-bat was heroic. We all new up in 518 that Berg was turning the game around. He owned Guardado.

That sign was everywhere tonight. I wonder how long until Jim Bloom offers Aaron a fulltime job ;)

Hey, I'm lookin' if anyone's hiring. Good to hear that the Return of the King sign went over well. It has now sadly been retired, unless the SkyDome folks have left it hanging in the front of 518. It had ice cream on it and would not have stayed... uh... "fresh" much longer. ;) Plus, once you duct tape 'em it becomes almost impossible to roll them up without getting the front stuck to the back.

Did the #17 in the seats where big Joshua hit his monster slam the night before get any love? I almost fell into the 200 level putting that up there. Too late I realized that we could have made the 17 out of big strips of duct tape, but then it wouldn't have looked as nice.

I can't believe the O-Drum was on Conan. It's like some kind of strange dream.

In terms of logos or Cheer Club advertising, I had some great signs last year that got no TV and no JumboTron because they included the Cheer Club URL. They're not going to put up anything that has any kind of advertising on it.

Thanks for the kudos on the sign quality, Daryn. Up close the Delgado image looks pretty terrible because it's from the internet and blown up way too big, but it looks good on TV.

Sure did. They showed it during Phelps' first at bat and Faulds and Cerutti had a good laugh about it.
