In honour of the upcoming All-Star Game in Houston (next Tuesday) Batter's Box is putting on a Pick The All-Star MVP Contest. You could win your choice of an array of fabulous prizes if you manage to pick the MVP.

The rules are simple. You must enter by posting a comment in this thread with your choice for the All-Star MVP. Only one person may pick each player, and it's first-come, first-served, so get your picks in fast before you get stuck with Ronnie Belliard or Joe Nathan. Please include an e-mail address if you can; if not, I will need an e-mail from you if you win so that we can deliver the prize.

Any player on the AL or NL roster is eligible. You may NOT switch players once you commit to a choice, unless you inadvertently duplicate someone else's choice. A list of the All-Star rosters is below, and one more player will be added to each team from the Final Vote balloting which ends later today (if you feel like taking a risk, any player currently in the Final Vote balloting is also eligible).

Incidentally, Bobby Abreu could really use your help in the Final Vote. He's in a "dead heat", according to MLB, with the thoroughly undeserving Aramis Ramirez of the Cubs.

If there are two or more co-MVPs, and two or more were selected, then both entrants will win a prize, and a random order will be chosen to see who chooses their prize first. Not all the prizes have been determined yet, but they include a genuine MLB-licensed Ichiro Suzuki T-shirt, and two one-hour passes to Playdium (with a cool Fighting Jay logo on them).

The contest closes this Sunday (July 11th) at midnight EST. Good luck!

It was all part of the plan. See how I teased you with a "fake" I-Rod pick, before pouncing on the future All-Star MVP? Mwahaha!
_Fawaz K - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 12:42 PM EDT (#52268) #
This is from ESPN.com

The Royals traded Carlos Beltran to the Astros after player balloting had commenced and therefore he appeared on the American League Player Ballot. Major League Baseball recognizes Beltran as an All-Star and he can participate in All-Star activities, but he cannot be named to the National League All-Star Team based on the results of the American League Player Ballot.

Unless they let him play for the AL, you're facing an uphill battle there, Craig.
_Asher - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 12:42 PM EDT (#52269) #
I'll take Miguel Tejada.
_Four Seamer - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 12:47 PM EDT (#52270) #
Sounds to me Fawaz as if they won't let him start for the Nationals based on his AL fan vote totals, but he's certainly on the roster as a reserve.
Craig B - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 12:52 PM EDT (#52271) #
I thought that McKeon named him as a reserve, but I might be wrong... the NL has 32 when they should only have 31. Looks like I'm stuck with the guy who's not allowed to play. Great! Just Frickin' Great! Now I can't award a prize to myself.
_Four Seamer - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 12:54 PM EDT (#52272) #
To elaborate on my post above,

[Beltran] cannot be named to the National League All-Star Team based on the results of the American League Player Ballot.

Note it says nothing about whether he can be named to the NL All-Star Team as one Jack McKeon's selections.
_Fawaz K - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 12:55 PM EDT (#52273) #
In any event, Beltran will probably get a spot once Griffey injures himself just looking at the hill in CF.
_Four Seamer - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 12:55 PM EDT (#52274) #
Or maybe I am a complete, giant idiot.
_Fawaz K - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 12:58 PM EDT (#52275) #
Note it says nothing about whether he can be named to the NL All-Star Team as one Jack McKeon's selections

That makes sense. As of this moment, the rosters on ESPN.com and MLB.com don't include Beltran as a McKeon selection.

_Four Seamer - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 01:03 PM EDT (#52280) #
I admit to being really confused. He is on the list of reserves at MLB.com (COMN), with the aforementioned legal language from MLB quoted by Fawaz above attached by means of an asterisk.

So why would MLB recognize him as an All-Star and allow him to participate in All-Star activities, if he is not actually on the All-Star team? I understand that Bud Selig is still the Commissioner, so there's no rule that can't be made up as they go along, but it would seem to me he's either an All-Star or he isn't.
_Four Seamer - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 01:04 PM EDT (#52281) #
Fawaz,

I don't know who's confusing me more - you or Bud Selig!
_Fawaz K/Bud Sel - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 01:06 PM EDT (#52282) #
I was basing everything on the ESPN.com rosters, that had Beltran on the AL reserve list with that qualifying language. I then checked the MLB.com rosters and initially missed Beltran on the NL reserve list.

_Mick - Wednesday, July 07 2004 @ 01:07 PM EDT (#52284) #
My guess is that Beltran has some sort of $75,000 All-Star Bonus in his contract, so is being allowed to "participate" to get the bonus so the union doesn't get all snotty about it.

I admit that it makes sense to me, anyway ... the guy is NOT a National League All-Star this year, no matter how good he's been the last two weeks.

No doubt Abreu is both more deserving and a better player than Ramirez, but it's not accurate to say Ramirez is "thoroughly undeserving." A .326/.374./.550 hitting line is pretty impressive, even factoring in Ramirez's home park. With Casey being hurt, my guess is Abreau and Ramirez both make it, which would be nice.

And because I'm a piss-ant, I'll take Aramis Ramirez. :)

The contest is still open for two more days. We have 48 entries so far, but there are still plenty of selections left including two position players... Ronnie Belliard and Paul LoDuca. And more excellent pitchers than you can shake a stick at. Don't be shy, you can pick a pseudonym and we'll never know who you are unless you win (and even then, only I will know who you are).

Roger Kahn's excellent book The Head Game is also now confirmed as a possible prize selection.

Presuming the MVP comes from the winning side -- I don't think that's ever NOT happened? -- then it appears Boxers favor the National League by a margin of 27-22.

And I think we all know that Carl Pavano is now a lock to win the MVP, hmm?

I'll take Pavano, then.

So... everyone ready for tonight?

Would it be really stupid to try and score this game? I'm not too thrilled about writing 15 names down in the pitcher's spot in the order.

And what happens if it goes extra innings? More "Fun with Bud?"

Rob, I've probably scored most of the last 20 or so all-star games. In my system, I don't have a fixed space for player names, so that's not a problem. The only tricky thing is the defensive replacements; they don't always tell you where they are in the order, or they go through them too quickly. Of course, these days I can probably get the information online somewhere, but I didn't have the PC on tonight.

P.S. For those who didn't stay up late, Soriano was named MVP.

This is distressing. 1984 - Portland picks Sam Bowie 2nd overall, Chicago takes Michael Jordan 3rd. 2004 - Fawaz takes Guerrero 9th, Ryan selects all-star MVP Soriano 10th...

Ummm, do I get partial credit for picking the anti-MVP?

In any event, Beltran will probably get a spot once Griffey injures himself just looking at the hill in CF.

I think I should get a prize for being a bit of a prophet.

Congratulations to The Original Ryan for picking All-Star MVP Alfonso Soriano! Ryan will have his choice from among three prizes...

- A genuine MLB-licensed Ichiro Suzuki T-shirt
- Two one-hour passes to Playdium (Toronto only, I believe) branded with that cool Fighting Jay logo
- Roger Kahn's excellent book on the art of pitching, _The Head Game_

I'll e-mail you, Ryan, to get details.
