Well, that was fast. Beltran to the Astros ... Boone to the Indians and Freddy Garcia to the White Sox.

The Sox sent catcher Miguel Olivo, prospect Jeremy Reed and minor league infielder Michael Morse to the Mariners for Garcia, catcher Ben "Salary Dump" Davis and, of course, cash.

Discuss.

The Mariners did very well. Jeremy Reed will be a fine ballplayer for many years.
_Mike Morse - Sunday, June 27 2004 @ 08:24 PM EDT (#32208) #
I like this deal for the M's. Not only did they get Reed, but Morse has 11 homers as a SS in AA.

Errr, that was me. Not sure how I accidently typed "Mike Morse" in the name screen. Sorry about that.
_Matt - Sunday, June 27 2004 @ 08:41 PM EDT (#32210) #
Yeah, great move for the m's... Now they have 2 great 'leadoff' men...
_Donkit R.K. - Sunday, June 27 2004 @ 08:47 PM EDT (#32211) #
Wow. I think the M's are going to run off like bandits here, especially if Garcia moves on in the offseason or signs an albatross (I can see it coming...)with the ChiSox. Olivo is one of my personal favorites (for no apparent reason) so I guess there's some bias, but on all accounts Reed looks like a fine young ballplayer too.

This shows unBavasi-like shrewdness - but then, he was dealing with Kenny Williams.

A Bavasi - Kenny Williams deal. I never even noticed that at first; must have ben an interesting negotiation ;-)

Just you watch. Garcia will be the next E------ L-----, and Kenny Williams will be proclaimed a genius.

You heard it hear first.

I like Garcia signing with Chicago for 6/66 and becoming a league slightly better than league average pitcher (105-115 ERA + type seasons) while Reed and Olivo both become solid 20/20 threats and everyday contributors. That's my read on this trade anyway.

With Magglio Ordonez and Carlos Lee, the White Sox are set at the corners for a few years. Plus, Aaron Rowand is having a decent year for them as well. They could probably afford to deal Reed without much worry. Whether trading him for Freddy Garcia was the right decision remains to be seen. IMO, Garcia is closer to a #3 starter than an ace, and do you trade one of the top prospects in the game for a middle of the rotation inning eater? If they make the playoffs this year behind Garcia's pitching, I'm sure they wouldn't care.

By the way, to the guy who's supposedly been posting as "S.K." for a year now, and who posted on this thread, I have changed my name from S.K. to "S.K. in N.J." to stop any confusion (it confused me reading this thread). Hopefully you don't migrate to Jersey anytime soon, because I'm keeping this name.

Ordonez is a free agent after this season.

the guy who's supposedly been posting as "S.K." for a year now

Not "supposedly". It's true.

A Bavasi - Kenny Williams deal. I never even noticed that at first; must have ben an interesting negotiation ;-)

Kenny Williams: Shiny! Pretty Veteran Ace.

Bill Bavasi: My mommy says I'm supposed to get Top Prospects when trading Veteran Aces.

Kenny: I have Prospects! Reed! Yay!

Billy: He's big and strong. Pretty. Deal. Stampsies, no erasies.

Kenny: This is fun. Let's trade more.

Billy: Here. I have more Veteran Leaders. This catcher is hard to carry and he's expensive and I might break him and since he's expensive if I break him it'll be bad. Will you take him for me?

Kenny: Yay! Veteran catchers! Here - I have more Prospects! Morsey! Neeeiiigghh!

Billy: Shiny infielder! *claps* Yay!

Kenny: Yay! *hugs Billy* Trading is fun!

I knew the Sox would be willing to dangle Reed in a trade. It's too bad the Jays didn't have a fit with them. Batista would probably be the only guy that would interest the Sox though Garcia has been better.

Would that be a trade you'd make on the Jays behalf? Batista for Reed?

The pickup of Olivo sucks for Seattle. Well, for fans of Seattle's backup catcher, Pat Borders. He's increased his numbers quite a bit the last couple of weeks (going from .095 to .200) and he even jacked a homerun. Looks like it's the end of the line for Pat, though, and back down to Tacoma.
Damn you Mariners! I'd say dump Speizio, put Borders on third base.
Maybe we can trade Zaun. Zaun is starting the progression in getting his numbers back down to the usual Zaun-zone. And Borders has a huge upside. Well, maybe not upside. Backside, most likely.

apologies for the double-posting. It was not even good enough to post once, let alone twice.

On paper, yes. But I strongly believe that the Jays should not trade players in the first year of multi-year free agent contracts. It'll be remembered when the Jays are looking for a first baseman and corner outfielder this offseason.

The Jays will always have to scratch and claw to attract free agents, and all of the "classy organization" brownie points they can accumulate will come in handy.

Didn't Magglio sign a long-term deal with the White Sox? I remember reading that he did, or maybe they were just beginning talks. Obviously, if the White Sox lose Ordonez, trading Reed looks foolish.

As for Batista, I doubt his value is that high around the league. If he keeps pitching like he has over the last two months, his value should increase dramatically, but most of Garcia's value comes from his name. If enough baseball people say he's an ace, soon others will start believing it, and that was the case here.

I'd keep Batista around. Than use Delgado's money in the off-season to sign Matt Clement. Halladay-Clement-Batista-Lilly-Bush. Pipe dream, I know.
_Kristian - Monday, June 28 2004 @ 09:05 AM EDT (#32225) #
Kenny Williams traded the wrong outfield prospect. He is infatuated with the power potential of Borchard but I think Reed will be the better player. Of course the Sox have Sweeney and Anderson who should go through their system very quickly. Nice job by Bavasi now lets see who is next to move, Moyer?
Craig B - Monday, June 28 2004 @ 11:33 AM EDT (#32226) #
Andrew, please go post that over on Primer. Freakin' hilarious.

Garcia's all right. But really, all he represents is two draft picks (his deal is up at the end of the year, so he represents nothing... market value, if you like). So the White Sox are getting 1.5 years of below-market Ben Davis and half a season of Freddy Garcia for several years of bargain Miguel Olivo and six years of bargain Jeremy Reed.

That's a really, really terrible deal for Kenny Williams. Meanwhile, Bavasi picks up his first steal of his tenure. Now, if he can avoid giving up Reed for some magic beans he'll have done extremely well.

Williams has a hard-on for the playoffs that he can't hide... all the worse because the Sox have always been likely to win anyway, if they cam just keep their wits about them. Garcia isn't the answer they need at the front of the rotation; not that he's a bad solution, just that he's not a #1 starter. He's one of the best options out there; but waiting a month might well have landed somebody better, cheaper.
_Chris B. - Monday, June 28 2004 @ 12:32 PM EDT (#32227) #
I would hold reservations on analyzing the deal. Young players are hard to predict. Just because Reed has a high ceiling doesn't necessarily mean he is going to reach it. And if the White Sox can sign Garcia to an extension, which is very realistic given the salary room they will have at the end of the season, it isn't a slam dunk for Seattle. Major league trades are very rarely "train robbery" to one side or another. A perfect example was the Hillenbrand/Kim trade last year. Every pundit was congratulating the red sox on the steal of the century. And look at Kim now. They couldn't give him away.
