This series could be the very last installment in baseball's Battle of Canada to be played in Toronto, so I intend to show up to both of the weekend games.

Who else is coming out? Any ideas for signage? I'd like to make some reference to how much we think Montréal's situation sucks. SEE YOU IN WASHINGTON seems rude.

Perhaps you could do something with: MONTREAL, THIS BUD'S FOR YOU, and an appropriate image of Selig.
_Fawaz K - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 11:55 AM EDT (#54844) #
Perhaps you could politely implore Minaya to trade Nick Johnson for Kerry Ligtenberg in the interest of Baseball North. Shoot, we have some room in the budget next year; how about Livan Hernandez for Terry Adams too?

Anyone got a high-res pic of Selig lying around? I'd love to have a bunch of pictures of him to flip over the railing, K-style, whenever someone commits and error.

COMN. Perfect picture, but I don't know if you can use it.

I'll only be able to make Sunday's game. Looks like the scrubs will have to wait until the Seattle series in July.
Named For Hank - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 12:04 PM EDT (#54848) #
When's Doc's next start?

Fawaz, that pic of Selig is priceless. I have to see if I can find a higher resolution version somewhere.

COMN for a bigger picture, but the quality isn't as good. It's from the All-Star Game in 2002.

My lady and I are planning to go to Saturday's game. We finally had the chance to go to the Big O on Sunday, seeing the Jays were out of town on my b-day for the 4th consecutive year!! Even though there were only 6500 fans, they were the loudest 6500 I've ever heard. It was a great atmosphere, and the Expos rallied for a 4-2 win on Orlando Cabrera's walk-off homer in the bottom of the 9th to beat the White Sox. The night before, there were 18,000 fans for Tim Raines retirement night, which unfortunately we didn't see, but I think it proves that Montreal could be a baseball town again. I salute the die-hards for hanging in there but the fans can only take being screwed so much for so long. Last year was a perfect example. If they didn't have to go to San Juan last year, they could have won the wild card.

The only drawback to the Big O is their seats, they're not exactly the most comfortable. They need an Obusforme night or something. Still, it's a decent place to watch a game and I'm glad we went when we had the chance. It was also Photo Day at the Big O, where fans were actually allowed to have pictures taken with the players, unlike the Jays events in the past where you had to stand behind the fence to take the pic.

The trip brought back a lot of memories of 79-80-81 when I first started watching baseball. Growing up in Northern Ontario, all you saw were Expos games on TV, Jays games were a rare sighting, so I became an Expos fan first. I still remember the heartbreak of '81, running home from school to catch the last few innings of Blue Monday. Then the Jays started to improve and I began watching them more.

The other neat part of the game was the "Je Me Souviens...I Remember" scoreboard feature on Pascual Perez. What a character he was. Dancing off the mound after a strikeout (more animated than Escobar!!) and his eefus pitches!! It was also neat seeing those retro unis and caps again, though I prefer the current unis now. The Jays should run clips of their history on the JumboTron.

I hope it's not the last time the Expos are here, but it's sure looking that way. Still, I'm looking forward to this week-end's games, I hope they'll be good ones!!

Even if the Expos were to move wouldn't they remain Toronto's 'natural rival'? If not, some other combination would have to be split up.
_Rob - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 12:27 PM EDT (#54852) #
How about...

CONTRACTEZ CECI, SELIG!
_Cristian - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 12:42 PM EDT (#54853) #
Even if the Expos were to move wouldn't they remain Toronto's 'natural rival'?

If the Expos go to Washington, then I don't think so. Here's what the matchups would look like

Yankees-Mets
Tampa-Miami
Orioles-Washington?
Boston-Atlanta
Toronto-Philadelphia

I would imagine we'd get to relive the 1993 World Series every year.
_Rob - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 12:55 PM EDT (#54854) #
Obvious Rivalries (if MON moves to WASH)
NYY-NYM
TAM-FLA
BAL-WAS
CHW-CHC
CLE-CIN
HOU-TEX
OAK-SF
ANA-LA
STL-KC

With 12 teams left over:
BOS-PHI-TOR-ATL-MIN-DET-PIT-MIL-ARZ-COL-SEA-SDP

Rob, what image did you have in mind to accompany "Contractez ceci, Selig"? All the images that come to mind are at least vaguely obscene.

The image that comes to mind for "This Bud's for you" are something like Fawaz' picture of Selig in a beer mug (full?).

I guess there's a reason I'm not in advertising.

My wife got us one of the rooms overlooking the Dome for Saturday's game (yeah Father's Day), so we'll be watching from there.

We're going to take our 8 month old son to Sunday's game (last time I was at the Dome I bought him a little Jays jersey, so he'll be wearing that); how long we'll stay will depend on him I suppose.
Craig B - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 01:12 PM EDT (#54857) #
Rob, the Braves and Red Sox are "natural rivals" as they used to share Boston. That leaves Toronto, Minnesota, Detroit, and Seattle, who will rotate through the remaining six NL teams every year...
Craig B - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 01:15 PM EDT (#54858) #
The troublemaker in me wants to make a big SMOKE BUD sign with a picture of Selig on fire. God knows that would get you kicked out fast.
_Rob - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 01:23 PM EDT (#54859) #
Of course, the Boston Braves. *hits forehead*

Rob, what image did you have in mind to accompany "Contractez ceci, Selig"? All the images that come to mind are at least vaguely obscene.

Well...something with a cuttlefish, let's just keep it at that.

I also thought of "La fierté de les Expos" which probably doesn't translate well back into English. It would be perfect for tonight's game, of course.
Named For Hank - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 01:24 PM EDT (#54860) #
Yeah, I doubt I could even get that one into the Dome...
_jsoh - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 01:25 PM EDT (#54861) #
Anyone planning on being there tonite? Going as a (belated) bday present from a friend
_Jobu - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 01:40 PM EDT (#54862) #
Random thought of the day: Wouldnt it be cool if Sparky's entrance music was "Ty Cobb" by Soundgarden? The tremendous amount of swearing would never let it happen, but man that would be cool. Such a good "dirtbager" song.

MONTREAL, THIS BUD'S FOR YOU

I like it, but perhaps even better is MONTREAL, THIS BUD'S NOT FOR YOU. I'm sure they'd make you take this one down. I love the idea of Selig heads for some less than complimentary use as well. How many shots do you think you can take at the spineless putz before they kick you out of the Dome? Say, how about a nice long snake with Bud for a head? A picture is worth a thousand words! Ooooh, maybe the snake is wrapped around the Expos symbol like a boa constrictor!

Yeah, I'm going stir crazy on a Friday afternoon at work...
_Daryn - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 01:54 PM EDT (#54864) #
Boston Braves? Wasn't that "Milwakee Braves"??
_Daryn - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 02:03 PM EDT (#54865) #
Wow, My Bad... Boston Braves, 1871 to 1952 National Association followed by National League... got 1.2Million in 1947.. must have been the second year after the War Heroes came back?
Named For Hank - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 02:14 PM EDT (#54866) #
Ooooh, maybe the snake is wrapped around the Expos symbol like a boa constrictor!

Maybe I should just photoshop Bud choking Frank Robinson.

I won't be at tonight's, but I'll be there Saturday and Sunday.

In honour of Gay Pride Day at the Dome, why don't you guys change your name to the Blue Jays Queer Club and put up a rainbow K everytime there is a strikeout?
_Loveshack - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 02:32 PM EDT (#54868) #
rainbow K everytime there is a strikeout?

LOL I like it.
_Jobu - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 02:35 PM EDT (#54869) #
The rainbow K is a hilarious idea. Lets just hope Towers doesn't think we're making assumptions about him with the choice of K's for the day.
_Niles - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 02:46 PM EDT (#54870) #
You could also put up a picture of KD Lang everytime there is a K. She's Canadian and Gay.

Named for Hank, are you feeling this?
Named For Hank - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 02:47 PM EDT (#54871) #
Hah, I love the rainbow Ks. I'll see if I have time to fire some off this afternoon.
Named For Hank - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 02:48 PM EDT (#54872) #
K.D. Lang is good too -- but maybe too offbeat?
_Niles - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 03:08 PM EDT (#54873) #
I don't know I think the KD Lang this is appropriatte and it'd probably get on TV too.
_Alex Obal - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 03:46 PM EDT (#54874) #
For a French-themed banner, maybe a straightforward "Je me souviens" to bring to the Sunday game?
_Jobu - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 03:58 PM EDT (#54875) #
I think that would be classic.
_alsiem - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 04:02 PM EDT (#54876) #
For a French-themed banner, maybe a straightforward "Je me souviens" to bring to the Sunday game?

How about a "Je me souviens, Bud" banner?
_Alex Obal - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 04:08 PM EDT (#54877) #
I like that too. I guess it's a matter of whether you want the Bud part to be implied or obvious.

Is anyone else going out tonight? And should I bring the reliever K's?
_Jobu - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 04:24 PM EDT (#54878) #
Anyone going to see the Cat at the car dealership tomorrow?
Named For Hank - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 04:40 PM EDT (#54879) #
I'll bring rainbow Ks for Sunday. They were easy to make in 30 seconds, which was the determining factor. ;)

I like the Je Me Souviens idea, but I don't have time to make it.
_Niles - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 04:50 PM EDT (#54880) #
I'll bring rainbow Ks for Sunday.

But tonight is the Pride Night at the Dome.
Named For Hank - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 05:13 PM EDT (#54881) #
Why did I think it was Sunday?

Damn, well I have a pile of rainbow Ks I can do nothing with. Like I said, I can't make it tonight.
_Niles - Friday, June 25 2004 @ 05:49 PM EDT (#54882) #
Like I said, I can't make it tonight.

Is it because you are getting the float ready?
_Anders - Saturday, June 26 2004 @ 12:26 AM EDT (#54883) #
Im gonna be around tommorow, but sitting in parts unknown with friends.
We/I might stop by, for what looks like my last game in 10 weeks.

Sigh, employment afar.
Named For Hank - Saturday, June 26 2004 @ 08:02 AM EDT (#54884) #
Nope, I was at a barbecue with friends who were living in Port of Spain who have just moved to Jakarta.

Hello Expos Fans:

CBC Newsworld is looking for a long time Expos fan to possibly do an interview with us on Friday July 2nd at Jarry Park in Montreal. The subject-the (probable) final meeting between Canada's two baseball teams this weekend in (ironically) San Juan, Puerto Rico.

We have tried to reach Robbie Hart, producer of Nos Amours a documentary a couple of years ago on the Expos. We are also looking for Katie Hynes, the long-time Expos fan who appeared in the documentary. If anyone can help us, we'd appreciate it. We'd also appreciate the phone numbers of any other long-time, knowledgeable fans who might appear.
