It affects you in the most peculiar way
Dull day don't seem pretty
We've said all that there is to say.

The Kent Williams Birthday Charm is at five years and counting, making us look smart for forecasting a win last night. Spencer Fordin, Mike Ganter, and Mark Zwolinski have all the details of last night’s 2-1, extra-inning victory, with additional commentary from Richard Griffin.

Elsewhere…..

--> Carlos Tosca must have been on top of the world yesterday, as he was named to the All-Star coaching squad. Many of us have had our criticisms of Tosca this year, but I trust no one would begrudge a longtime baseball man a moment of tremendous glory like this. Kudos to Joe Torre for not simply inviting the usual suspects again this year (Tony Pena is also on the squad, another classy move).

--> Less good is the news that Frank Catalanotto is probably headed back to the disabled list. The Jays reacquired former Toronto farmhand Anthony Sanders last night from the Rockies and assigned him to Syracuse, suggesting that the Skychiefs may soon be short an outfielder. Might we see Marvin Benard in a Toronto uniform tomorrow?

--> No matter how long you’ve been following the game, you never get tired of how excited young players are when they get promoted to The Show. Adam Peterson’s arrival in Toronto is Exhibit A, as this nice Fordin article indicates. The thought of a rookie pitcher pulling out his own baseball cards in an effort to get across the border is reason enough to smile, but Peterson’s infectious enthusiasm just adds to it. More good news: Skychiefs shortstop Russ Adams has been selected for the Major-League Baseball Futures Game. Congratulations, Russ!

--> An afternoon game today, as the Jays and Rays battle for the series win. Red-hot lefty Ted Lilly suits up for Toronto, while another southpaw, one-time Mariner prospect John Halama, tries to start a new winning streak for Tampa. Game time is 12:35 pm.

It doesn't really matter that I'm the first one to respond, does it?
_Jordan - Thursday, June 24 2004 @ 09:24 AM EDT (#55871) #
Yes indeed, that there is Platinum Blonde. All our talk of bad '80s CanCon and nobody mentioned Doesn't Really Matter?

Thirty million points for Tom, and here's a cuttlefish delicacy:

Wow ... that was a huge honkin' cuttlefish.....

Well, Griffin had one good line with Hinkse hitting like Svend Robinson. On the other hand, I don't think that we need to champion the Devil Rays yet. Remember all those great stories about the Tigers? They now sit at 31 - 39, almost identical to our 31-40 Jays. There's a long way to go in the season and I still think that the Jays will finish with more wins than the Rays.

Ah stink - it was on the tip of my tongue! I thought it was a British voice, but I should have known Jordan would go for the Canadian hair band (CHB).

I think Benard is out of action with a groin injury. Though Simon Pond has a little more experience under his belt as an outfielder now. We might see him back up with the Jays.

I was reading the free Metro newspaper on the GO train this morning, and in their little writeup of the Jays game last night they said that the tying run was scored on a wild pitch, which they went on to explain was a "gift" from the pitcher, and that while the winning run was a base hit, really it was a broken bat single and therefore was not a good play by the Jays, either, and that the Jays cannot score.

I was wondering who on earth would want to put such an incredibly negative spin on such an exciting win (I don't know how it played on TV, but it was a heartstopper in the stands), but then I noticed the credit at the bottom: Torstar News Service.

That explains everything, don't it?

Man ... I missed with the cuttlefish and I've missed with Benard. I'm going home to start the day over again....

I am really starting like the bullpen that consists of the young Jays. Chulk, File, Frasor, and hopefully Peterson will pitch to his potential. It would be great not to have to see the likes of Adams, Lightenberg, Speier anymore.

I thought it was a British voice, but I should have known Jordan would go for the Canadian hair band (CHB).

Don't beat yourself up, Mosely. Mark Holmes is British, so you were right about the vocals. The guitars and rhythm section are as Canadian as a Tim Horton's Maple Glazed donut, however.

I'm Still Searching for the Alan Frew/Glass Tiger instalment in Canadian bands fronted by British lead singers. I hope Jordan brings it to us Someday.

No worries, Four Seamer -- any day now. But for the moment, let's turn our attention back to the Diamond, Son.

Oh man, that's brilliant.

Did anybody notice that I nailed the reed Johnson in centre prediction from last week? If only somebody would have taken the bet...
_Rob - Thursday, June 24 2004 @ 11:21 AM EDT (#55882) #
Did anyone else notice this in last night's boxscore?
Menechino, DH
Clark, 1B
Johnson, CF
Hinske, 3B
Zaun, C
Hudson, 2B
Gomez, SS
Rios, RF
Berg, LF
Woodward, PR (in the 10th innning)

If the Jays didn't score in the 10th, who would have played LF in the 11th? I would think Woody plays SS, Gomez moves to 1B, and Clark in LF. Nobody else on the bench can play LF -- Cash, Cat(hurt), Phelps.

And I just love lineups with 5 middle infielders playing at once.
_Christopher - Thursday, June 24 2004 @ 11:48 AM EDT (#55883) #
How badly was everybody pulling for Rios to end it in the ninth?
I had butterflies during his AB. It's great we still won but I would have loved to see the smile on his face had he ended it.
_Chuck Van Den C - Thursday, June 24 2004 @ 11:51 AM EDT (#55884) #
And I just love lineups with 5 middle infielders playing at once.

Especially when three are at the most offensive positions: DH, 1B, LF. Such is the life of a heavily injured team.

Woodward has played some 1B in his career. Berg's big single notwithstanding, why wouldn't Clark have started in LF and Woodward at 1B?

Is Woodward in the doghouse? Is he still kinda injured? You'd think a team so desperate for offense would try to squeeze him into the lineup.
Named For Hank - Thursday, June 24 2004 @ 11:52 AM EDT (#55885) #
Totally, Christopher, totally. Especially since doing something like that would boost his confidence considerably.
_Chuck Van Den C - Thursday, June 24 2004 @ 12:24 PM EDT (#55886) #
It's great we still won but I would have loved to see the smile on his face had he ended it.

With what have been his 2nd RBI of the season.

What kind of a freak stat is 1 RBI in 85 AB? That projects to 6 in 500 AB, less than the 17 Luis Castillo got in 539 AB in 2002, when he batted .334.

In anticipation of any potential assaults, I am not suggesting that this says anything about Rios. It's just an incredibly bizarre stat, helped along by Rios' 1 for 17 with RISP.
_Rob - Thursday, June 24 2004 @ 12:31 PM EDT (#55887) #
Ummm..is there a game thread for today's game?
_Jordan - Thursday, June 24 2004 @ 12:34 PM EDT (#55888) #
It's coming-- I just got out of a meeting.
_Rob - Thursday, June 24 2004 @ 01:01 PM EDT (#55889) #
Come on Jordan! Baseball always comes before work. ;)
_Jordan - Thursday, June 24 2004 @ 01:14 PM EDT (#55890) #
Rob, we agree completely. My boss, on the other hand.... :-)
