We’ve reached the midway point of the regular season. This report will be longer than usual, as your not-so-humble correspondent reflects on the week — and the first half — that was.

After stumbling through the previous three weeks with an embarrassing 11-21-3 record, my Toronto Walrus bounced back to defeat the SABR Magicians 8-4 and maintain a two game lead. AGF, who pulled out a 6-5 win over the gashouse gorillas on Sunday, remains second. Baird Brain edged two games closer to the third-place Moscow Rats with a 7-5 victory, while Mebion Glyndwr settled for a 6-6 tie with the Chatsworth Halos to hold down fifth spot. Billie’s Bashers made the week’s biggest move among first-division clubs, vaulting from ninth to sixth with a 10-2 rout of the Austin Senators.

At the other end of the standings, where the second-half race to avoid relegation will be as intense as the one to make the championship playoffs, a 10-2 romp improved the Thunderbirds’ precarious position while burying Jick’s Rays deeper in the basement. Garces_not_on_roids whipped the Reykjavik Fish Candy 9-3; those two teams are now tied for 18th and 19th, but within striking distance (less than six games) of five other rivals and a mere 11 game improvement away from reaching the consolation playoff bracket.

Here's where we stand at the break:

This week, Jordan and I were separated by 0.04 in ERA and 0.02 in WHIP going into Sunday’s games, when inspiration struck. Like many a “brilliant” managerial strategy, it made no difference. Holding a safe lead in IP, I benched two of my three starters, gave my middle relievers the day off, and with a micromanaging eye on ratios, sat Shawn Chacon, who had earned three saves already. What I didn’t anticipate was Miguel Batista’s 7.1 shutout innings, which (with a big assist from Vinny Chulk) was just enough to steal ERA and prevent me from sweeping the pitching stats.

Even with the great Jim Thome going .391/.500/1.174 including a monster Sunday, I couldn't quite catch the Magicians in the hitting rate stats. Fortunately, the Walrus wheels kept spinning like crazy — for the week we swiped 13 bases and scored 48 runs, which will usually win those categories. Then, a late afternoon HR by Junior Spivey gave us the lead in RBI, which made up for ERA slipping away. It feels good to have Cabal bragging rights for another year. If only there was a Cabal.

I’m obviously delighted with the first half, after leading the league for the last 10 weeks. My draft was very good — the six guys I took in rounds 19-24 have made a world of difference. Letting all the other catchers go and “settling for” Johnny Estrada was a pre-draft strategy that worked, as did targeting Ronnie Belliard and Royce Clayton as adequate middle infielders everyone else would ignore. I landed Carlos Silva and Jason Marquis as my “deep sleeper” pitchers, and while 22nd-rounder Matt Lawton was also on my potential bargoon list, he has worked out far better than I hoped. Marlon Byrd in the 11th was the only selection I regret — the Phillies sent him to Triple-A yesterday — but nobody’s perfect on draft day. Hell, last year I took Brandon Larson and (shudder) Jeff Weaver.

I’m pleased with turning sixth- and seventh-round picks Damon and Hunter into Bobby Abreu; that was one of those trades that is supposed to help both teams. As usual, I’ve trolled the free agent list for pitching help, recycling the middle relievers I drafted for speculative picks. Waiving Flash Gordon for Terry Adams was my most severe brain cramp (Wagner was hurt at the time; I was desperate for SV) but I’m quite content with Ryan Madson, Bronson Arroyo, Jose Lima and Chad Gaudin, so far. My theory is, if you keep turning over your 25th man, and sometimes your 24th, sooner or later you might get someone good.

Who knows what to expect in the second half? There's a considerable amount of luck in fantasy ball, especially in Head-to-Head play. My chances are very closely tied to Curt Schilling’s ankle; he makes the difference between an adequate rotation and a pretty good one. If Carlos Delgado comes back strong, I may be able to trade a bat for an arm. For the short term, I’m just hoping to earn a pitching point or two this week against the awesome staff of AGF, while winning as many hitting categories as possible. There are no easy matchups in this league, but #1 vs. #2 is a big one.

Tears from the land of Anarchy as the Archivists saw a six-week winning streak snapped with an 8-4 loss to the resurgent Vancouver Cyphers. We got taken to the cleaners on pitching, even losing the K/W category which we had led since Tuesday. Only ERA could be salvaged. In the hitting categories, the Archivists came back to take both the Run and RBI categories, but lost two rate categories for the first time in a long while as only slugging remained in our hands.

An ugly loss (though with a good performance, just outclassed) and Homer Jays Simpsons should feel the cold, antiseptic sting of Archival Wrath this week. Overall, AA held on to our 10th-place standing, but we are now eight games out of a playoff berth and just a game and a half above the depths of 14th place.

Just a reminder : the Archivists are still working the phones trying to make a deal to send one or two of Edgar Martinez, Jeff DaVanon, Michael Tucker, Matt Holliday, or Andruw Jones packing. Prices will vary but no offer will go unconsidered.

BONDS : Once again an NL West resident takes the Bonds award as Edgardo Alfonzo tries to kick-start his flagging career. Fonzie made the difference in the R and RBI categories (and possibly SLG as well), making him an easy choice as he hit .429/.458/.857 with 7 runs and a walloping 10 RBI.

NEIFI : One week after claiming a Bonds, Paul LoDuca claims the Neifi after an anemic .263/.263/.368 performance, with just one run and one RBI. Raffy Palmeiro almost won his second in a row; I expect more from him than a .174 average and .259 OBP.

PEDRO : I very nearly gave this award to Jarrod Washburn, who was lifted from his second start of the week with back spasms but still pitched eight very strong innings for me for the week. Instead, I decided to award Jason Johnson, who is repaying my faith in him with some big performances. He could not pick up the win over the Marlins, but Johnson had a nice 7.2 5 3 1 1 6 performance.

LIMA : Why oh why did I trade for Kelvim Escobar? Inviting Escobar back into your life is an invitation to heartbreak. Escobar lost his start against the Astros and had a line of 5.2 7 4 4 7 6. That's right, *seven* walks.

The Capers managed a big leap into 8th spot in the BBFL's Barfield standing this week with yet another juggernaut like performance ;-)

BONDS : Jim Thome, I bow before you. 'Nuff said. 8/10/0/.391/.500/1.174

NEIFI : I'm gonna go with Keith Ginter. There are some zeroes thrown around on my team from this past week, but I'm most dissapointed in how this guy has played. He played so well before becoming starter. The story of my life, it seems, with Keith and Rodrigo. 1/3/0/.167/.286/.167

PEDRO : I've considered Bonderman, Rusch, Van Poppel, Smoltz, Beckett, Davis, and the now-departed Johan but the award just has to go to El Artista who is really coming on strong for me. Everybody that I mentioned above turned in the sort of week that could win The Capers' PEDRO any given time, but El Artista's mastery covered the most innings, tilting the scale in his favor. His WHIP and K/BB weren't great, but they'll do. 13.1/1/0/2.70/1.58/0.56

LIMA : Not a lot of good LIMA candidates this week, but I'll unceremoniously dump the award on the now departed "Frenchy" Rheal Cormier (ya see, since he's gone I won't be ruffling any feathers, hurting the team's chemistry ;-) ). The verteran middle reliever for whom I had very high hopes put up an ugly line of 1.1/0/0/20.25/3.00/0.67

After trailing by lopsided scores like 11-0 and 10-1 all week, losing 7-5 feels like a victory. It's a little galling to lose AVG by 3 points and ERA by 0.02, but when you think what could have been, it's an awful lot better. Hats off to Baird Brain. On to the week 11 awards!

MVH: A farewell award for Jose Cruz, who batted .368/.500/.947 on his way to perennial Rats trading partners Red Mosquitos. He scored eight and drove in seven. Spicol, I hope you get this Jose Cruz, rather than the Jose Cruz who has been a guy you can never count out for...

LVH: ...this award, which goes this week to Julio Franco. One run, two RBI and a line of .105/.190/.263. Otherwise the whole team hit well.

MVP: A.J. Burnett was pretty good in a week when the Rats pitching staff couldn't buy a win, going thirteen innings with an ERA of 1.38, a WHIP of 0.85 and a K/BB ratio of 1.14.

LVP: Justin Duchscherer wins here, with an ERA of 27.00 and a WHIP of 7.50. Chad Bradford also sucked.

This week, Hannibal's Cannibals hit town. We look forward to the clash. As always, beware the Rats.

The freefall to mediocrity continues for the Edmonton Decepticons as the were handed their 4th loss in a row by Pistol Nine. The Decepticons now sit 22.5 games back of the lead and have officially fallen from contender status to pretender status. The good news for the Decepticons is that with Jose Reyes now traded away for Brad Wilkerson, the team is fully healthy for the first time this season. Woops, scratch that. Richie Sexson is still injured.

Interesting stat of the week: 3 months of Jose Reyes - 0 for 3 with one run scored. I hope MonkeymenCubed have better luck with Reyes and throw-in Craig Counsell than I did (no I don't).

Bonds: Beltran puts up a nice week and, for the first time since April, shows why he's above replacement level.

Neifi: Just looking at the stats, I'd have to give this award to Craig Counsell (enjoy MonkeymenCubed) but I'm not giving this award to a player this week. The Neifi goes to Lloyd 'freaking' McClendon for turning Jason Bay into a part time player at the expense of chumps like Daryle Ward. Lloyd can't be fired soon enough.

Pedro: Brett Myers and Jason Isringhausen put up decent numbers in a week where everyone of my pitchers hovered around the mediocre line.

Lima: So long Billy Koch. Have fun on the waiver wire because I can't imagine anyone else in Barfield will pick you up. You will not be missed.

It would have been nice to build on last week's success, but I'll be content hovering above .500. In contrast to Coach, my draft's 15-25 picks have been a disaster. I have kept a total of two of those picks, although a couple were probably worth holding on to (J. Johnson, C. Cordero). My theory is, if you keep turning over your 15th through 25th man, you're bound to be stuck hovering around .500.

Actually, my luck has been decent in salvaging the wire, as I've added Ford, Holliday, Scott Hairston, Erstad, Matt Ginter, and Westbrook to the team, replacing the likes of Edwin Jackson, Randall Simon, Matt Kata, Aaron Guiel, and R.A. Dickey. No superstars like Javy or Webb from last year, but solid performances all.

This week it's the Hammers; as we battle it out in the middle of the standings, I'll keep one eye on the Walrus as they loom large on next week's horizon.

Bonds: Rocco Baldelli has been steadily improving his numbers after a horrendus start. He now has a season line of 41/32/6 286/337/415. This wasn't his best week, even with a season high 7RBI, but a weak field makes him stand out.
Neifi: Holliday can't be putting up a like 217/250/304 with one RBI at home if he wants to stay in the lineup.
Pedro: Even with his loss to the Braves, Westbrook pitched a total of 14 innings that included his shutout against Baltimore. A solid 2.57/1.07/2.67 line.
Lima: The recently released Reitsma. Wha' happen? 3IP 5ER and 10 W+H drains those rate stats.

*as an aside, we may have to look at re-naming this last "award" pretty soon...

Call it whatever you want, but whenever he starts at home, or in those S.F. and S.D. pitcher's parks, it's going to be Lima Time for the Walrus. Jose was actually a good candidate for the Pedro award this week.
_Shrike - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 12:48 PM EDT (#56438) #
Quite an eventful week for the Cyphers, who managed to turn in a third straight strong performance and were mere fractions of a point in ERA away from defeating the Archivists in all of the pitching categories. Still, we'll happily take the 8-4 and a climb into 15th place.

Two significant trades led to significant turnover of the Cyphers roster, so I'll pause here to bid a fond farewell to the exiting players, with a special nod towards Jake Westbrook, who contributed significantly to my pitching before his departure.

Looking forward to the second half, I can only hope my upward climb in the standings continues, as Cyphers management feels that we now have a very balanced team that can compete in every category.

Unlike last week when I expected little and received it from the Good Sports, this week I was counting on a big win to keep us within striking distance of the first place Ghost Man on Third. Unfortunately it was not to be, as a second straight pathetic offensive performance had the Good Sports limping to a 5-6-1 loss.

Bonds:
Royce Clayton is definitely the choice here, but it was sure nice to see Trot Nixon finally contribute.
Leaders: Belliard 2, Podsednik 2, Clayton 2, Johnson 1, Payton 1, Sanchez 1, Bellhorn 1, Ford 1

Hawpe:
Ugh. The offense hit a combined 3/39 with 2 runs and 1 RBI on Sunday, costing the team 2 or 3 more offensive categories. This week's dishonor goes to Everyone Who Played on Sunday. Apologies to Mike Piazza, who actually homered yesterday; but he's included too since he did it with no one on base.
Leaders: Scutaro 2, Hawpe 2, Clayton 2, Everyone Who Played on Sunday 2, Daubach 1, Piazza 1, Segui 1

Schmidt:
Jason Schmidt was absolutely phenomenal, again. I didn't really enjoy his impressive 12 K outing against Toronto, but the follow up performance on Sunday against the Red Sox was a thing of beauty.
Leaders: Schmidt 5, Clemens 2.5, Frasor 1, The Bullpen Collectively 1, Wilson 0.5, Kolb 0.5, Urbina 0.5

Ligtenberg:
Thanks to the aforementioned Jason Schmidt, just one good performance in three from Roger Clemens and Roy Halladay may have swept the pitching categories. The award goes to Clemens, who sucked twice rather than once.
Leaders: Ligtenberg 3, Clemens 2, Field 1, Urbina 1, Correia 1, Osborne 1, Schmidt 1, Frasor 1

JackFoley,

The Jose Reyes deal may come back to haunt me--especially if my middle infield of Carlos Guillen and Juan Uribe turn into pumpkins in the second half of the season. I'm not sure Reyes will turn into the star that Mets claim he is already but he's a good player and he'll give you steals if healthy. After suffering so many injuries this season, I was glad to get steady Brad Wilkerson who can hopefully add a little punch to the Decepticons. He's sorely needed with Teixeira looking so bad, Sexson being done for the year, and the ghost who inhabited Javy Lopez last year moving on.

The Elitists had a scorcher of a week, beating Schroedinger's Bat 10-2. Both offense and pitching played well throughout the contest, although many categories were much closer than the score would indicate. We've moved up to 6th, and are within reach of 3rd.

Bonds: Aaron Rowand went 8/14 in limited action with a nice line of .571/.625/.785 and 2 sb which are rare on this team, so I'll give him the biggest award of his life. Hank Blalock gets special mention for going .429/.455/.905.

Neifi: Paul Konerko is either Bonds or Neifi. This week he's Neifi, going 1/13, 2 2 0 .077/.200/.308. Juan Rivera also put up a strange, flash in the pan line of .188/.235/.625.

Pedro Tough call here, but given my squad's lack of saves, Damaso Marte gets the nod. Marte capitalized on his opportunity to say the least, pitching 4.1 shutout innings with a win, a save, and a line of 0.00/0.23/7.00! Honourable mention to Wade Miller and Mark Redman for solid starts that would've won any other week.

Ponson: The only pitcher who really had a bad week was Buddy Groom, who struggled in his 2 IP this week.

The Elitists look forward to the second half with baited breath. Week 12 opponent MonkeymenCubed matches up well with us, hopefully we can continue our run of fortune. Another week of a team .534 slugging pct. wouldn't hurt.

The Cannibals were looking good this week until a late run by the Eastern Shore Birds closed things up. I'll take the 7-5 victory...

Both teams hit well this week- with RBI and R already decided, I wound up sitting Shawn Green and Adrian Beltre last night to avoid losing slugging and BA, but then Green hit a HR, which would've kept me in the lead. Cannibals finished the week with .303/.375/.494, third straight week of solid hitting after a slow May. Not sure which offense is for real, the one that's been around in April/June or the one that sucked in May, but my season hinges on it. Birds took steals, helped out by Berroa's 4 this week; I need Renteria to get his sh*t together after giving up Hudson for him in the off-season.

The Birds won WHIP despite my ERA edge 3.04 to 4.52. Birds also took Wins with 2! This despite very solid pitching performances by both clubs.

My computer's being weird, so I'll give awards in the next post.

Bonds Lots of candidates.
Edmonds- .350/.480/.700
Walker- .375/.429/.792 8 R
Beltre (.500/.500/.800 7 R) takes it, continuing to be a steal in round 12.

Neifi Carlos Pena sucks. He was good in April, but has been miserable since. .154/.353/.154. Ugh. Desperate for a 1B in the late rounds, guess I should've taken Sean Casey.

Pedro Lots of good pitching performances with only 1 win to show for it. Loaiza 8 IP 1 ER .88 WHIP 2.50 K:BB takes it.

Lima Our old friend, Kelvim: 6.35/2.47/.86.

Mid-season review: I was much more conservative in my draft strategy this year, taking what I thought were low-ceiling vets over high-ceiling rookies. That approach netted me:
Todd Walker round 13 (.284/.371/.498)
Mark Bellhorn round 19(.250/.393/.426)
Rondell White round 15 (.293/.368/.485)
Tom Glavine round 14 (7 W 2.07 ERA .98 WHIP)

But I made some huge blunders too, picking Phelps in round 7 (hoping he'd get some 1B time too) and Soriano in round 11, despite him not being assigned a role other than middle relief. I've resisted going nuts on the waiver wire, but have grabbed Todd Van Poppel (4.53/1.25/3.09), Justin Miller, and Kevin Youkilis. My second half basically hinges on getting Phelps back in line or out of the lineup, Shawn Green finding his swing, and everyone else just keeping up the pace. I could use a 1B and have a glut of adequate middle infielders, but if Guiel can come back productive from eye surgery that problem may be solved. In the hunt this year at least...

Okay, I'm feeling a bit better now that I'm firmly ensconced at the top of the Toughest Schedule rankings. I'm looking forward to facing opposition from the other half of the division at some point (not this week, though, with the Halos). Of course, with my luck all the lower-tier teams will put it together in the second half.

Anyway, new ChiSox closer Shingo Takatsu is available in return for a solid infielder or starting pitcher; package deals are not only possible but welcome.

I'm apparently the anti-SABR this year- second-to-last in K:BB, first in ERA...

Heh, I'm in 6th place in Barfield despite being above the 50th percentile in 4 of 10 categories. Dumb luck to the fullest.

"I need Renteria to get his sh*t together after giving up Hudson for him in the off-season."

I did the same thing, dp, during the seaosn (as we all know) and I will try to resist bitching about it again :-P

Donkit, of course, after I post that I see that he hit .400+ for the week...maybe a good sign. Some of the power he showed last year wouldn't hurt either.

That's the thing, dp - his rate stats (particularily his SLG %) that are disspaointing me. Yes, this week was good and I tried my best to ignore it, so as not to jinx it. If he hits well again this week, then I'll be excited.
_Shrike - Monday, June 21 2004 @ 09:54 PM EDT (#56458) #
Still, a careful look will show that Tim Hudson's K-rate is alarmingly low, which means his K/BB is not what it once was.

Not that I wasn't happy to trade for him, to be sure.

My gamble didn't pay off- traded Hudson and I-Rod for Webb, Renteria and Javy Lopez. Figured I-Rod's stats would take a hit in Detroit, given the park and lineup, and needed Lopez for his slugging. Difference between Webb and Hudson wasn't huge early on, but he's struggled a bit after a nice April.

I checked out the schedule. I have Ben's Men this week. Great, right? No, Mauer, Garciaparra, Prior and Hudson are all back from injury now and it looks like an above average team to me.

Thanks for the vote of confidence but it's getting to be where every week my team finds a new way to screw up. I kept it close last week against Ghost Men, but lost in the last few days due to Prior and Willis stinking it up. By the way, if my standing dont improve in the next 2 weeks or so everyone is available, except Prior and Pujols. That's right, Cabrera, Garciaparra, Willis and numerous others can be had for the right price (it may be a bit steep though). Happy bidding!.....in a bit!
