Charleston clinched the 1st half title, and New Hampshire kept on winning on Saturday. It was also my daughter's Bat Mitzvah, so even a 2-3 record for the farm affiliates tastes sweet.

Columbus 5 Syracuse 4

The Sky Chiefs led 2-1 going to the eighth, but the bullpen surrendered a run in the eighth and three unearned runs in the ninth, and a Syracuse rally in the bottom of the ninth fell short. Mike Smith was given a spot start and pitched 4 effective innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit and 3 walks with 4 strikeouts. Dave Maurer pitched 1.1 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts. Chris Baker and Kevin Frederick, who took the loss, finished up. Stubby Clapp went 3-5 with 2 doubles, Simon Pond homered, Jorge Sequea reached base 3 times, and Tim Whitaker reached base in all 4 of his PAs to lead the offence.

Kurt Isenberg was raked for 4 runs in the first inning, and Dunedin could not catch up. Bubbie was again perfect. The Baby Jay offence was led by Ron Davenport who went deep twice. Big Vito singled, doubled twice and walked in 5 plate appearances, and Rodney Medina reached base 3 times. The day after clinching the first-half title, Dunedin rested Miguel Negron and Raul Tablado.

The Doubledays started off the season with a second tough loss. Trailing 1-0 going into the ninth, the D-Days tied it up on a Jarad Mangioni homer, but Dewon Day gave up a run in the bottom of the ninth to take the loss. 1st star-Chris Leonard, who showed that return from arm surgery does not necessarily have to be painful.

Bat Mitzvah? Does this mean she's now draft eligible?

Thanks for the kind words. Draft eligibility is thankfully 5 years away.

During a year of bad news, how about some silver linings?
(1) Russ Adams (23 years old, Triple A, .282/.371/.400, 33 W, 28K) has proven his boosters right. His hitting has improved to the point that it does look like he will be able to hit well enough for a middle infielder in the majors.
(2) Aaron Hill (22 years old,Double A,.286/.375/.385, 34W, 27K) has made the leap to double A, and improved his hitting. He's hitting in a difficult environment in his home park; his power numbers will improve when he moves to Syracuse. He's right on track to be a fine major leaguer.
(3) Miguel Negron (21 years old, high A,.288/.368/.485, 17W, 29K) has moved from low A to high A and improved his strike zone judgment and power significantly).

The development of Adam Peterson, Bubbie Buzachero, Rodney Medina, Raul Tablado, Shaun Marcum and Justin James is also encouraging. Josh Banks was fabulous in Dunedin, and is getting his feet planted in Double A after a rough start. David Bush looks like a major league pitcher, about 1 month from now, and Guillermo Quiroz was off to an acceptable start before his hand injury.

Congratulations to the players, coaches and organization for the Dunedin and Charleston mini-pennants. Excellent news about Leonard, too -- I'm sure that was worth all his hard work, and hope he stays 100% sound.

Mazel tov to Ms. Green and family.
