The main reason the Jays are under .500 is the offence. They've hit the second-fewest homeruns in the AL (50), and have the second lowest slugging percentage (.396); they're 12th in the league in runs scored per game.

Because of their respectable number of walks and HBP, the Jays have had about an average number of runners reach first base. And because they don't run much, they are susceptible to the ground ball double play. In fact, they have the second most in the AL as we speak (61; Yankees have 64) - that's too much.

The disappointing offensive seasons to date from Josh Phelps, Eric Hinske and Carlos Delgado are most responsible for the power outage. Due to injuries, there have been simply too many low-power players in the lineup.

The starting pitching has been average - did you know that the Jays starters have a better ERA this season than Yankees starters? The relief pitchers are ranked tenth in ERA in the AL, but have given up only 5 unearned runs.

I've watched this team perform poorly late in the game. The easy thing to do would be to blame the bullpen, but it seems to me that the offence has had a tough time scoring runs in the late innings. Because of this, comebacks have been a rarity and holding onto a lead perilous.

Robert, I'm fining you 500,000 points for being unwilling to finger the bullpen as the Easy Answer (TM) to the Jays' woes.

For what it's worth, I agree that the offense has been the main culprit.

Scott Carson, stats man on Jays TV, passed on a funny story. When they announced the Blue Jays lineup before tonight's game, the Petco Park crowd laughed and rolled in the aisles when Dave Berg was announced.

Before the anti-Dave Berg faction has a fit, Jerry Howarth reports that Catalanotto and Hudson are both a little sore -- they may have tried to do too much, too soon, so they are getting the night off.

Sparky and Rios have changed positions; either they aren't happy with Alex in CF, or they want him to become more comfortable in right.

I thought this park was hard to hit in. Maybe we could interest the Padres in Mighty Mouse before the deadline.

Tremendous baserunning by Sparky, and a textbook slide -- 2-0 Jays.

Menechino has hit two homeruns to dead centre now. He might have the highest power to height ratio in baseball since Jimmy Wynn.
_Magpie - Friday, June 18 2004 @ 10:23 PM EDT (#57058) #
How big was Jimmy Wynn? The old Toy Cannon.

Before he made his living saying dumb stuff on ESPN, Joe Morgan had a little pop in his bat, as I recall...
_Keith Talent - Friday, June 18 2004 @ 10:28 PM EDT (#57059) #
I knew Reed Johnson was a great Major Leaguer right from his first game. Everything he does is textbook, from the old textbook.

Know how to tell?

Watch when Reed steps out of the box. He literally steps out, putting his right foot right out of the box. Nobody else does that. That's the sign. He respects the lines and the way the game is supposed to be played.

YES: Cerutti just said 'watercraft' again, love it.
robertdudek - Friday, June 18 2004 @ 10:35 PM EDT (#57060) #
Wynn was listed at 5'9" but was one of the top power hitters of his generation. Playing in the Astrodome took a lot of potential homers away.

Boy, Lilly's doing all the right things recently. Keeping the pitch counts down, mixing it up real nice...great to watch so far. I have enjoyed watching him chuck all season, even when he was finding his way earlier one. Also, Sportsnet had him clock in at 92-93 tonight.
_Magpie - Friday, June 18 2004 @ 10:53 PM EDT (#57062) #
Mel Ott was also listed at 5-9, 170, which probably makes him the smallest of the 500 HR guys. Of course, the Polo Grounds had an awful lot to do with that.

Whereas Jimmy Wynn was dealing with the Astodome and the 1960s strike zone.

Jerry Coleman has joined Jerry Howarth in the radio booth. You know Coleman, famous for saying, "There's a deep fly ball... Winfield goes back, back... his head hits the wall ... it's rolling towards second base."

Another Colemanism: "I've never seen a game like this. Every game this year has been like this." Want more?
_Kenneth - Friday, June 18 2004 @ 11:05 PM EDT (#57064) #
Unbelievable...only Dave Berg can turn a double into a single like that. Does he have pictures on JP or something?

The Colemanisms reminded me of Murray Walker. The now retired F1 announcer. He had some hilarious on air gaffes. However, everyone let them slide because Walker was so well loved by F1 and its fans. COMN for some examples. My favorite:

"This has been a great season for Nelson Piquet, as he is now known, and always has been"

Berg was fast enough (barely) to score on the shallow Menechino single; 3-1 good guys.

Wells got away with a balk when he started his pitching motion and knocked his cap part way off his head. He stopped his pitching motion. There was no one on base and that should be an automatic ball on the batter.

From the rules ...

"(a) The Windup Position. The pitcher shall stand facing the batter, his entire pivot foot on, or in front of and touching and not off the end of the pitcher's plate, and the other foot free. From this position any natural movement associated with his delivery of the ball to the batter commits him to the pitch without interruption or alteration."

That has never been called in the history of the game...

Oh man those Colemanisms are great. The tears are rolling down my face from laughing so hard.

"Mike Caldwell, the Padres' right-handed southpaw, will pitch tonight."

Yeah, thanks for the link Coach, these rule.

"I've never seen a game like this. Every game this year has been like this."

"Parker's grand slam is the same as going 4 for 4, even though he went 1 for 4."

Ok Im done now.
robertdudek - Friday, June 18 2004 @ 11:54 PM EDT (#57075) #
I've seen pitchers trip during their motion, stop their motion and be charged with a balk or a ball in cases where there was no one on base.

I remember this year when Halladay was distracted by something, stopped his motion without stepping off and had a balk called on him.

I think it's no mystery that the Padres are underachieving in their beautiful new park. It's because it's a beautiful new park for everyone who plays, visitors and home. It will take nearly a season for the Padres to feel at home in this park.

Very nice work by File, who threw a lot of strikes, and there's no chirping tonight from the Tosca critics, as he let Bob get five outs.

Worth staying up for. Of course, they didn't make up any ground on the third-place D-Rays, who knocked out Randy Johnson and are about to win their ninth in a row.
