Last night Dunedin and Charleston reduced their magic numbers to one and two respectively. Dunedin beat Ramiro Mendoza for good measure. Could the big league Jays do that? Today is opening day for the Auburn Doubledays.

Norfolk 1 Syracuse 4

After scoring 15 runs on Wednesday, and allowing 15 runs on Tuesday, the Chiefs were back to normal yesterday with a routine 4-1 win. Sean Douglass was very strong on the mound pitching seven innings with only five hits and one run allowed. Michael Nakamura pitched the last two innings for the save. Glenn Williams was the hitting hero with three hits, three runs scored, with a home run and two doubles. Gabe Gross was 2-4 and also scored a run. The game was tied until the bottom of the sixth when Williams doubled and scored on a single by Gross. Gross scored on a sac fly from Paul Chiafredo. Williams added a home run in the eighth to put it away.

Sarasota 0 Dunedin 13

Sarasota and Dunedin continued their battle for the division title last night. Dunedin entered the game having won seven of eight and not even Ramiro Mendoza could beat the Jays. Mendoza pitched three innings on his rehab assignment and allowed one run. Dunedin tallied fifteen hits, seven of them for extra bases including four home runs. Every starter had a hit.

Dunedin scored their run off Mendoza in the second, a triple by Rodney Medina scored Gregg Raymundo. Dunedin added four in the fourth as soon as Mendoza was gone, three on a home run by Miguel Negron. Negron added another three run shot later to end the night 2-5 with two home runs and six RBI's. Raul Tablado and Medina each had two hits and a home run.

Meanwhile Neomar Flores delivered his strongest start of the season, seven scoreless innings, six hits and one walk. Tracey Thorpe pitched a perfect eighth and Justin Maureau made his first appearance of the year in the ninth. Maureau walked the first two batters but then retired the side.

Vince Perkins gets the start tonight as Dunedin try to clinch the first half title.

Charleston 5 Kannapolis 1

Charleston had lost four in a row as they faltered when in sight of the division first half title. Tom Mastny got them back on track with five scoreless innings. Mastny was sharp, allowing three hits and four walks in his five innings.

Charleston scored four runs in the fifth on four hits and two walks. Felix Romero, Joaquin Canizal, and Brian Reed finished off. Juan Peralta had three hits, Joey Reiman and Brian Patrick had two hits each.

It's great to have Perkins and Maureau back in action. Those are two arms I'd like to see continue their development.

The recent power surge in Dunedin is remarkable. Negron's development curve has taken a sharp upwards turn, and Tablado shows no sign of slowing down. But keep an eye on Rodney Medina, too; after an injury and a slow start, he's also catching fire.

With Auburn getting underway, the promotions should be coming any day now....

Has anyone heard any update on contract talks with Purcey and Jackson?

Could Negron climb the Blue Jays ranks much like Alexis Rios did 2 years ago in A-Ball? Negron is hitting .296/.376/.497 with 9 HR in 159 AB, combined with a solid K:BB rate of 28:17. He is definitely someone to watch this year.

All the more impressive with the recent power surge is that the Florida State League is considered a pitcher's league and that it decreases a hitter's actual power ability.

It's crazy though that while the Jays were convincing Negron he wasn't a power hitter, he may have developed into one.

Joey "Super Man" Metropoulos is listed on the Auburn roster now... and as an outfielder.

As well, Jarad Mangioni is listed in the pitchers' section; I assume that is an error since he has been a third baseman and outfielder in the last two years...

The Doubledays start their season tonight... Go little Jays, Go!

COMN for article on Metropolous and the Auburn roster. Apparently Auburn could have as many as 40 players, and have 29 currently 1 under the roster limit. WOWSERS!! They need to get a few of those hitters to Charleston (Kratz, Corrente, Wesley have experience at higher levels).

The Doubledays are on the radio right now, head over to Mahoning Valley's website and look near the bottom of the right-hand column for the link.

Jeremy Harper's on the mound for Auburn; I didn't catch the top of the first. Aaron Matthews made a spectacular diving catch in deep center on the first Scrappers hitter. Nice beginning...

Erik Rico pitched an inning? Hmm...how come we have not heard of this position switch? They had more then enough arms available down in Auburn, so it doesnt look like it was an emergency appearance.

The Fisher Cats beat Trenton 5-4, as Adam Peterson struck out the side for his 15th save. Aaron Hill was 2-for-4 to equal the club record with a 12-game hit streak. Todd Ozias allowed three runs on six hits in his five innings to improve to 6-3, and Mike Snyder, making his first start at 1B since April, delivered a 2-out, 2-run double. Banks goes tomorrow at 5:00 for New Hampshire.

Hey Johnny, you think that's wierd? How about Juan Peralta pitching 3 hitless innings for Charleston tonight. He also K'ed 3 and didn't walk anyone. Nice to know that one of our SS prospect has a nice arm..

That Peralta line is so bizarre, it turns out to be a mistake -- although the official boxscore does list Perlata as the pitcher, in fact it was Jordy Templet. I don't know how the official scorer confused two guys named Templet and Peralta -- maybe they wear similar numbers or something.
