Better late than never. Two wins, two losses, and a whole lot of runs scored for Toronto's farm teams last night.

Syracuse 15 Norfolk 3

Everybody hits! Every Skychiefs starter except Brad Hassey reached base at least twice, and they all scored a run. Triple, double and 3 runs scored for temporary leadoff man Stubby Clapp (Russ Adams is out with a mild injury); Double, single and 4 RBIs for Jeff Guiel; 2 singles and 2 walks for Jorge Sequea; double, single, 2 runs and 2 RBIs for Gabe Gross; and homer-double-single and 2 RBIs for Paul Chiafreddo.

David Bush was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion as he posted what is rapidly becoming his signature line: 7 IP, 8 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 6 K. Perhaps of mild concern was that 4 of the hits were doubles and the other 2 were homers, accounting for all the runs. When opposing batters got ahold of a Bush offering, it was evidently with authority. His season line now stands at 6-5, 4.36, 14 GS, 84 IP, 96 H, 16 BB, 77 K, 6 HR. Still too many hits, but for his first exposure to the International League, Bush is doing pretty fine.

Norwich 7 New Hampshire 6 (10 innings)

Heartbreaking loss for the Fisher Cats last night, who rallied from a 6-0 deficit to send the game into extra innings, only to lose it in the 10th on an error by 2B Dominic Rich. The opposition six-spot came courtesy of starter Gustavo Chacin, who gave up 6 hits and 2 walks (with 3 Ks) in 4 1/3 frames; in fairness, only 3 of the runs were earned. Jordan DeJong and Dan Jackson rode to the rescue with 4 2/3 innings of one-hit shutout relief, striking out 4 and walking 3; John Ogiltree took the tough-luck loss.

On offence, Rich had 3 singles before his evening was spoiled by the error, while Aaron Hill doubled, singled, scored a run and drove one in. Doubles by Danny Solano and John-Ford Griffin constituted the only other extra-base hits on the night for the F-Cats.

Dunedin 8 Sarasota 3

The D-Jays are in full flight. Jamie Vermilyea pitched a stellar 6 1/3 innings, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits, no walks and 6 Ks; maybe the starting rotation agrees with him. Rodney Medina and Ron Davenport both cracked home runs, while recently acquired 3B Gregg Raymundo had 3 more hits to drive his average up to .347. Big Vito and Raul Tablado both wore sombreros after 3-K nights. The easy victory over second-place Sarasota inched the D-Jays closer to clinching their division.

Kannapolis 6 Charleston 2

Shaun Marcum struck out the first 4 batters of the game and was sailing along with a no-hitter through 5 innings. But it all fell apart in a 4-run sixth on 2 singles, 2 doubles and a walk. Juan Peralta and Joey Reiman each singled twice for the Alley-Cats, and Clint Johnston’s double was the only other safety for Charleston batters.

The Three-Star Selection: Difficult to choose among so many worthy performances, so this is one man’s opinion:

The Third Star: Jeff Guiel, Syracuse, with a double, single and 4 RBIs in the Skychiefs’ big win.

The Second Star: David Bush, Syracuse, who struck out 6 and walked nobody in the Skychiefs’ victory.

The First Star: Jamie Vermilyea, Dunedin, who fired 6 1/3 innings of 4-hit ball to lead the D-Jays.

Honourable mention: Jorge Sequea, Rodney Medina, and 5/6 of Shaun Marcum.

Randon comments:

The Chiefs fielded an all Canadian outfield last night, Pond, Clapp and Guiel. That could be a first for AAA.

Dunedin are 1 1/2 games ahead with four games left.
Charleston are 2 1/2 games ahead with four games left.

I was looking at the BA top 100 prospects list and noticed that the Jays have had the same bad luck in the minors as in the majors. The six Jays on the BA list are:

Alex Rios
Dustin McGowan - Injured
Guillermo Quiroz - Injured
Gabe Gross - injured but hitting
Francisco Rosario - Injured
Aaron Hill

Four of six top prospects injured, plus the injury to Russ Adams. It has been a tough year.

Rosario is injured again? What's wrong with him?

Wasn't it a strained bicep?

Yep, recurring bicep tendonitis

It was a very productive night on the farm; the highlight was Dunedin's thrashing of Sarasota 13-0. Miguel Negron (twice), Raul Tablado and Rodney Medina all homered, and it looks to me like Negron and Tablado are due for promotion. Still quiet on that front.

I've got a good nickname for Miguel.
How's about "Long Gone" Negron?
_Cristian - Friday, June 18 2004 @ 12:38 AM EDT (#56468) #
The impressive thing about Negron is that he's also showing decent plate discipline.
_R Billie - Friday, June 18 2004 @ 03:40 AM EDT (#56469) #
Two homers and six batted in for Mr. Negron.

From the "better late than never" division of the corrections department: a sharp-eyed Bauxite has pointed out that, notwithstanding my assertion David Bush gave up 6 extra-base hits in this game, he actually only gave up 4 -- 3 doubles and 1 home run. My read of the boxscore was obviously incorrect, and while it may have been the boxscore's error, the responsibility is mine. Apologies to David for misrepresenting his fine outing against Norfolk on this night.
