I’ll start with the bad news. Russ Adams tweaked his left quad muscle in the 7th and is out for a week or so. Marvin Benard also went down with a groin pull and will likely be out much longer. On the brighter side, so called “Rios-lite”, Miguel Negron is having a breakout year of his own in the pitcher friendly Florida State League.

Norfolk 15 Syracuse 8

The bats ruled the day in Syracuse as the Skychiefs took an 8-4 lead into the sixth but the Tides would score 11 unanswered runs in the final 4 frames. Russ Adams and Jorge Sequea reached base 3 times each. Designated hitter Gabe Gross had a single and a double while Simon Pond went O-fer and was hit by a pitch. Our old friend Tom Wilson doubled and walked for Norfolk.

Skychiefs’ starter Ryan Glynn went into the 6th but gave up 6 runs (4 earned) in the process. Mike Nakamura had 4 strikeouts in 2 innings but still gave up a run. Aquilino Lopez was roughed up for 3 runs in an inning while Mark Lukasiewicz was hammered for 5 more runs in the 9th.

New Hampshire 4 Norwich 2

A solid start for Ryan Houston who went 6 innings with 2 runs on 4 hits, 2 walks and 5 K’s. Brandon League pitched 2 shutout innings in relief with 3 K’s before Adam Peterson shut the door in the 9th with 2 strikeouts for his 14th save of the year.

Aaron Hill and Jose Umbria had 2 hits apiece to lead the offense. Anton French drove in the final two runs with a triple in the fourth.

Dunedin 7 Tampa 6

The D-Jays maintained their lead in the West division by grinding out a pair of runs off a rehabbing El Duque and a walkoff three run homer by 2000 first round pick Miguel Negron. The HR was Negron’s second of the game and 7th this season. The Jays 4th round pick in that same 2000 draft Raul Tablado set the stage for Negron by reaching base 4 times in 5 attempts to make up for his 2 errors.

Ismael Ramirez pitched a solid 6 innings giving up 2 earned runs. Tracy Thorpe struggled but Bubbie Buzachero and Tommi Ozuna finished off the game.

Charleston 4 Kannapolis 5

Justin James went six and a third giving up 5 runs, 3 earned. Robinzon Diaz led the offense with a double, a HR and was hit by a pitch. However it was also an error by Diaz that led to Kannapolis’ 2 unearned runs.

Eric Arnold banged out a pair of doubles while William Rivera had pair of singles. Reliever Davis Romero pitched another solid inning with 2 K’s.

Aaron Hill is on a career high 10 game hitting streak. Hills numbers for June so far are BA-.380; OBP-.415; SLG-.540. That is a 955 OPS after a 746 OPS in May.

I don't think the Jays will promote Hill for the week Adams is hurt, they probably planned to leave Hill at New Hampshire for the full year.

Guess you can meet your 2004 Auburn Doubledays tomorrow (June 16th) at Falcon Park:

Negron is a year and a half younger than Rios and doesn't turn 22 until August. He's also showing more power and patience than Rios did in Dunedin. He's also missed about 3/4 of a season in total the last two years due to injuries. It'll be interesting to see how much more he progresses.

Aaron Hill might be having an outstanding season that is being buried by his and the team's problems hitting at home. A couple of weeks ago he was hitting over .300 on the road and that has only improved since. Also all 5 HR have been hit on the road. He's also struck out only 26 times in 63 games which is pretty awesome considering the jump in levels he's made.

I'm also overusing also.

Just because he hit well against the SkyChiefs-
David Wright is going to be amazing. In 2 games at AAA he's 5/8, 1 2B, 4 R.

His AA line is sick:
.363 .467 .619 223 AB 27 2B 10 HR 40 RBI 44 R 20/6 SB/CS

Incredible. And he's only 21.

The Jays are having horrid luck- Bernard needs to be healthy in case Wells goes down, and he gets hurt on the same day...

Hear, hear. One year ago, Aaron Hill was still playing for LSU. Despite that long college season, he took no time at all to prove he was too good for short-season pro ball, then held his own in High-A. His slow start in Double-A this spring was in part due to the cold weather, and also because he was in the 3-hole, seeing a steady diet of breaking stuff from better pitchers than he'd ever faced. Mike Basso dropped him in the order, where he started to see a few more fastballs, and now Aaron is the 3-hitter again, where he still doesn't have much protection but is in a terrific groove.

Too bad about Adams, who has also been red-hot lately. Let's hope he's back in action and 100% very soon. It really has been a snake-bit season so far for the whole organization; sooner or later the "horrid luck" has to change.

Aaron hill needs to improve his power numbers, for any consideration for a promotion, and he wil not be called up to be a short fil in while Adams sits for a week.

Dunedin score two in the bottom of the first against second place Sarasota. Jamie Vermilyea is on the hill for the Jays.

6-0 after 2. I wish the FSL league had more games to stream over the net. Just 3 teams do that.
_MatO - Wednesday, June 16 2004 @ 12:54 PM EDT (#57676) #
I don't think Hill is going anywhere this season. His power numbers might be misleading because Hill and the team seem to have a problem hitting at home. If he repeated his road numbers at home he'd have 10 HR to date and there would be no questions about his power.

Alley Cats make their first roster move of the season -

P Marcos Sandoval was placed on the DL and the Jays sent RHP Jordy Templet to the Cats.
_Ryan01 - Wednesday, June 16 2004 @ 12:57 PM EDT (#57678) #
As MatO already said, Hill's lack of power may be due to the temporary park the Fisher Cats play in. All 5 of his HR's were hit on the road and he's hitting well over .300 on the road. There was a whole article on this in the Union Leader a couple weeks ago pointing out the home/road splits. The team batting average was something like 50 points lower at home, iirc.

I agree he probably won't be called up yet, but Hill is having an excellent year nonetheless.

"Rios-Lite": Cool name.

It is good to see Negron beginning to produce!

Dunedin won 8-3 vs Sarasota
Gerry - Wednesday, June 16 2004 @ 02:54 PM EDT (#57681) #
Jamoe Vermilyea had his best start of the year. Davenport and Medina homered. The Jays are 2 and a half games ahead with four games left. Two of those games are against second place Sarasota so one win in those games will guarantee first place.

Does anyone have an updated list on which draft picks the Jays have signed or the Roster for Auburn... I've seen the Pulski one. Thanks!
Craig B - Wednesday, June 16 2004 @ 03:51 PM EDT (#57683) #
Marc, a list will be posted in a few minutes. The Jays have signed 25 draftees so far, including both third-round picks (Hill and Lind), fourth-rounder Casey Janssen, and also Chip Cannon.
_MatO - Wednesday, June 16 2004 @ 04:00 PM EDT (#57684) #
Finally some draft picks signings are released.

To continue on the comparison between Rios and Negron. The following is their Dunedin stats in Ave, OBP and SLG format.

Rios age Apr 1, 2002 21 years 1 month .305 .344 .408
Negron age Apr 1, 2004 21 years 7 months .293 .378 .467

Negron's is a much smaller sample.
Gerry - Wednesday, June 16 2004 @ 04:23 PM EDT (#57685) #
Rios took a big jump forward when he reached AA, when he was at Dunedin there were questions about his future. If Negron can do the same at AA the comparisons will be more valid.
Gerry - Wednesday, June 16 2004 @ 04:24 PM EDT (#57686) #
Charleston lost this afternoon to continue their slide. They have lost four in a row and 5 of 6. Shawn Marcum retired the first 13 hitters and 15 of 16. But with two out in the sixth he gave up four runs. That was the game. Charleston are still hanging on to first place.

The Pulaski roster has been listed, COMN. The roster includes some 2003 draftees, 2004 draftees and some latin and other free agents. Chen from Taiwan and Edward Rodriguez are both at Pulaski. Our friend from Northern Ontario, James Pidutti, is also on the roster.

The story on Negron was that he was messing himself up by swinging for the fences too much. His success this year has been attributed largely to him just going for solid contact rather than trying to hit the ball over the fence.

This is one of those baseball adages I love. Once a player stops swinging for the fences, the ball starts flying over them...

David Bush had another good start for Syracuse, as the Sky Chiefs demolished Norfolk 15-3. The F-Cats rallied from a 6-0 deficit to tie up the game late against Norwich. They're in extras.
