An early and abbreviated report this week, as I am about to take my B.C.-bound son to the airport, then there's work to be done. I was surprised this morning to find my slumping Toronto Walrus still in first place, by the narrowest of margins, despite losing 6-5 to Mebion Glyndwr. AGF defeated Horse Field Hammers 6-4 to move within a mere half-game of top spot, and the Moscow Rats, after thumping the Thunderbirds 9-3, are just two games out. Baird Brain made a big move into fourth with a 9-2 rout of the Eastern Shore Birds, who remain in sixth. A dozen teams are over .500 and bunched within 13 games, as we approach the halfway point of the regular season.

Here are the Alomar standings through 10 weeks:
  # Team W-L-T Pct GB
1 Toronto Walrus 70-42-8 .617 --
2 AGF 70-43-7 .613 0.5
3 Moscow Rats 70-46-4 .600 2
4 Baird Brain 66-49-5 .571 5.5
5 Mebion Glyndwr 64-51-5 .554 7.5
6 Eastern Shore Birds 65-52-3 .554 7.5
7 Red Mosquitos 63-51-6 .550 8
8 Chatsworth Halos 64-53-3 .546 8.5
9 Billie's Bashers 62-55-3 .529 10.5
10 gashouse gorillas 60-54-6 .525 11
11 hannibal's cannibals 57-52-11 .521 11.5
12 Horse Field Hammers 58-56-6 .508 13
13 SABR Magicians 54-60-6 .475 17
14 Austin Senators 51-59-10 .467 18
15 Springfield Isotopes 51-62-7 .454 19.5
16 K-Town Mashers 49-63-8 .442 21
17 Reykjavik Fish Candy 51-66-3 .438 21.5
18 Thunderbirds 45-71-4 .392 27
19 Garces_not_on_roids 45-72-3 .388 27.5
20 Jick's Rays 28-86-6 .258 43
The last nine weeks at the top have been fun, but even facing the SABR Magicians, who disappeared last week, I don't have much confidence in my team. My pitching has been dreadful lately, and just as Wagner gets back, Schilling is limping. At least the hitters were respectable for a change, especially my Phillies. Almost every time through the order, at least one of Polanco-Abreu-Thome did something good. Here's hoping Delgado comes back healthy; not only will that inspire the Blue Jays, it will let me trade a bat for an arm.

The Pistol Nine apparently took the week off as they got hammered 11-1. Surprisingly the hitters we're too bad, they just ran into a juggernaut. The pitchers, outside of some fluke wins, were brutal. Double digit ERA, WHIP above 2, K/BB barely above 1. Ouch.
_King Rat - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 09:10 AM EDT (#57833) #
I don't think I've had quite so bad a week pitching-wise all year as last week, which generally would be a problem, as the Rats are very much a pitching and defense team. Fortunately, the offence responded, and thanks to a down week for the Thunderbirds, we came away victorious. On to the week ten awards!

MVH: With a tip of the cap to Eric Byrnes, who was awesome, it has to go to Derrek Lee, who hit at a .433/.500/.867 clip, scoring six, driving in nine and stealing a base.

LVH: Since-departed Bobby Hill hit .091/.231/.091, scoring two runs in the process. Bobby Higginson wasn't much better.

MVP: Brad Radke went fourteen innings, posting an ERA of 1.29 and a K/BB ratio of 4.67. As those were the pitching categories I won, I think it beats Mark Buehrle's two wins, which came with a less impressive ERA.

LVP: Kip Wells was bad this week, giving up thirteen runs in nine innings of work. The 2.78 WHIP and low K/BB ratio didn't help either.

This week: a showdown with fourth-place Baird Brain. It will be a tough one, but, as always, beware the Rats.

How bad are my batters? They're so bad, Tony Womack was far and away my best hitter last week. Other than Chase Utley in 2 at-bats, Wild Man Womack was the only K-Town hitter to manage an OBP over .280 AND a SLG over .340. Never mind keeper-level, Chipper Jones, Jeff Bagwell, Jose Vidro, and Mike Sweeney are all playing below replacement level. Solid supporting cast Nick Johnson, Matt LeCroy, Corey Koskie, Tim Salmon? All making solid arguments to be punted right out of Town. To add insult to injury, I drop one of the useless bunch of wet noodlers, Ben Grieve, and he doesn't even make it to the FA pool, he gets claimed off waivers by the #3 team in the league.

The pitching wasn't great, but at least there were a few bright spots. Joel Pineiro is really starting to pitch up to expectations, turning in 16 dominant innings this week. Derek Lowe didn't stink, for a change. FA pickup David Riske brought immediate ROI with 3 lights-out innings and a win. Paul Wilson still hasn't turned into a pumpkin.. John Riedling no so much.

Thumping 8-4 win for the Archivists over third-place (but badly banged-up) Good Sports; our sixth series win in a row. We took all six hitting categories, most by wide margins (AAs are 27-8-1 in the hitting categories during that streak) but could only take wins and IP as we got narrowly pipped in WHIP. We had a chance to move up to 8th but solid Sundays from Middleclass Elitists and Homer Jays Simpsons kept us in 10th place.

This week, we get the now-surging Vancouver Cyphers; Sean has his boys playing tough and they're coming off two consecutive wins.

Anyone who is interested in the recently-acquired Matt Holliday, e-mail me or make me an offer. I'll take pitching or hitting, not fussy, and I'm not asking for much.

Awards for this week...

BONDS : Heh. OF Michael Tucker had this one in the bad until Sunday, when he went a preposterous 0-for-9 against the Baltimore staff. In his place, the winner is Carlos Lee on the back of a fine .478/.500/.739 performance, with 6 runs and 4 RBI and a stolen base (AA won stolen bases with a team-record eight this week).

NEIFI : Thanks to some nifty stolen base work by Jeff DaVanon and Andruw Jones, no one had a truly bad week. The Neifi, then, goes to first-half MVP Paul LoDuca for his empty .250/.280/.333 performance, with just two runs and one RBI.

PEDRO : Say it with me, folks : "Cy Young Award Winner Tom Glavine". Sounds good, doesn't it? Well, not so much that he's with the freakin' Mets, but it beats him being on the freakin' Braves at least. Tom Terrific II had two masterful starts for me, 8 5 1 1 4 2 in the Metrodome against the Twinkies followed by a brilliant win over the Royals on Sunday that clinched the wins (and nearly the WHIP) category for me, 7.2 4 2 0 1 5. How long Glavine can keep doing this, apparently with mirrors, no one knows. Maybe Mike Cameron should win the Cy Young award.

LIMA : Jason Jennings against the Yankees: 5.1 10 6 6 3 8 and yes I should probably have known better. Jennings has a 6.94 ERA and I'm starting him every time out, I must be insane. Give me the Lima instead?

Yeesh. My hitters just disappeared, and although my pitchers did very well (3.52 ERA, 1.21 WHIP, 2.94 K/BB), we ran into a buzzsaw named the gashouse gorillas, whose worst starter last week was Roy Freakin' Oswalt. 0-11-1 may have sunk my chances at a playoff spot -- there are just too many teams to climb over -- but we'll see what dealing Carlos Beltran (my last pre-season keeper) will produce over the next little while. If nothing else, this week's showdown with the Walrus will determine Cabal bragging rights for 2004 (the Walrus took last year's matchup 10-1-1, for those keeping score).
_Gwyn - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 09:48 AM EDT (#57837) #
A win over the leaders is always a good thing. I as hoping for a couple more 'wins' over the Walrus heading into Sunday, but, their hitters rallied with a great day to win the rate stats. My pitching didn't have it's best week, but, then it didn't need to as the Walrus hurlers struggled and the fairly pedestrain efforts of the Mebion Glyndwr staff were more than good enough.
Looking forward to this week's conest with 'moves' leader the Chatsworth Halos.
Bonds: Like Craig I'm giving this to Carlos Lee, it's been a good time for Lee owners recently, I was starting to regret the trade that brought him on board but it's looking better now. Joe Randa deserves a shoutout for a .412/.500/.647 week.
Neifi: Michael Cuddyer .200/.200/.200
Pedro: This should go to Ordalis Perez, but, after his slighting of the fighting Jays this week he is in the managers dog-house, so as usual Ben Sheets gets it for 15 very good innings.
Lima: Josh Towers looked favourite for this but was pipped at the post my Jose Mesa and his 27.00 ERA

The Cyphers did indeed manage to win with a solid 8-4 over the TMG's.

Even with two consecutive tidy wins under our belt, we're still looking at a .421 winning percentage and 18th place, but that's better than the cellar! I'm looking forward to extending my winning streak against Craig's Anarchist Archivists, but it'll be a tough task.
_snellville jone - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 12:16 PM EDT (#57841) #
Ahhh, the air sure is sweeter on the other side of .500. The Magician's offensive vanishing act was a big help as I put up good, but not overpowering numbers on that side of the board. My pitching, as Jordan says, was overpowering. If I were to remove Oswalt's start and Smoltz's 4 run inning, I would have had a 1.24 ERA over the remaining 51 IP. K-Rod and Lidge alone combined for 16 Ks in 10 1/3 IP.

Just as Spicol, I'd like to trade pitching, but I have a specific need for a catcher, preferably a good one. My main problem is I do not have a catcher to trade, so it will most likely have to come from someone who has multiple catchers. I'm inclined to say that Hudson and Oswalt are off limits, which restricts my pitchers available to a pool of young players who have performed well thus far:

D. Willis
J. Westbrook
M. Ginter
C. Capuano
D. Tankersley
C. Nageotte

Also, one of either John Smoltz or Frankie Rodriguez is available. I value the above pitchers in the order they are listed, essentially, though Tankersley and Nageotte have high upsides to be considered. I'm willing to play without a catcher for the time being if I don't get an offer that suits me.

As this is already too long, I'll skip the awards. Everyone's a winner when you don't lose, right?

Last Monday, Ghost Man's Scott Hatteberg hit a grand slam off Edmonton Decepticon Cory Lidle. That one at bat was a microcosm for the entire week as the Decepticons fell 10-2 to the league leaders. It's been an ugly few weeks for my squad as they learn to live without Richie Sexson. Very few players are hitting their weight and my pitching staff has fallen apart and has now been overhauled with waiver wire scrubs. This week brings Pistol Nine to town, the only team who lost worse than the Decepticons last week. It'll be interesting to see which of my players disappoint this week. Will it be Javy Lopez sucking, Youkilis losing playing time to Nomar and Bellhorn, Uribe remembering he's Uribe, or Jason Bay getting benched by Lloyd McClendon. Stay tuned.

BONDS: Juan Uribe, waiver wire pickup, wins the award again proving that the draft is for chumps.

NEIFI: Carlos Beltran. Here's a note to every team who dreams of acquiring Beltran from the Royals: Beltran has sucked for the past month and his overall numbers are now very pedestrian. I don't think any baseball writer has picked up on this.

PEDRO: Isringhausen picked up one save this week to claim one of the two categories I won this week.

LIMA: Cory Lidle managed to contribute a 15 ERA over two starts this week. I'm pretty sure he gave up most of his runs to Ghost Man players which doubly hurt my chances this week.

Beltran has sucked for the past month and his overall numbers are now very pedestrian. I don't think any baseball writer has picked up on this.

Plus, he crashed into the wall yesterday and may be hurt. It looked like he thought he had another 2 steps before hitting the wall, but he miscalculated.

My hat is off to my opponent the Horse Field Hammers. A long debated and thought about challenge trade of Mulder and Zambrano was finally accepted by the Hammers. The timing of the acceptance meant that Mulder started one game for the Hammers in our matchup before changing temas while Zambrano did not start for me but for him. In a match-up where the IP was won by 5IP, the W was tied and the WHIP fairly close the 2 starts by Zambrano and Mulder for the Hammers were important. So kudos to the Hammers.

MVH: Once again wiaver wire pick-up Hatteberg: 9R/11RBI/.500/.520/.850

LVH: Rich Aurilia really can't be this bad can he?: 0R/1RBI/.176/.222/.235

MVP: Randy Johnson 13IP/2W/2.08 ERA/0.92WHIP/5.0K/BB

LVP: TOny Armas, JR. still working off the rust 7.2IP/9.39ERA/2.09WHIP/1.0K/BB

And now the frightening mathup with last years powerhouse the gashouse gorrilas and the prospect of facing A-Rod and Hudson...
_Rob Andrew - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 01:08 PM EDT (#57846) #
I had a bad feeling about this past week's matchup with the Anarchist Archivists, and said a week ago that I would be fine with a 6-6 draw. Still, the 8-4 loss really smarted and was even perhaps a little generous to my Good Sports. We lost all six offensive categories, with only SB being particularly close. This is the second straight week that we've lost that category 6-8 against a team that normally doesn't steal many bases.

Bonds: Belliard and Scutaro had better rate stats and similar run/rbi, but Scott Podsednik will earn the honor for chipping in three SBs in a losing cause.
Leaders: Belliard 2, Podsednik 2, Johnson 1, Payton 1, Clayton 1, Sanchez 1, Bellhorn 1, Ford 1

Neifi: The offense was pathetic this week, so there are no shortage of well qualified candidates for the Neifi. An impressive 056/100/056 line in regular play from Royce Clayton wins the honor.
Leaders: Scutaro 2, Hawpe 2, Clayton 2, Daubach 1, Piazza 1, Segui 1, Everyone Who Played on Sunday 1

Pedro: I just can't decide between Ugueth Urbina and Danny Kolb. Kolb was flawless and collected two saves, Urbina was just short of flawless and had three saves. Honorable mentions to Roy Halladay and Roger Clemens.
Leaders: Schmidt 4, Clemens 2.5, Frasor 1, The Bullpen Collectively 1, Wilson 0.5, Kolb 0.5, Urbina 0.5

Lima: Call it the Pedro Jinx; a week after getting the good pitching award, Jason Frasor was hit hard, as I'm sure everyone here is well aware.
Leaders: Ligtenberg 3, Field 1, Urbina 1, Correia 1, Osborne 1, Schmidt 1, Clemens 1, Frasor 1

The Elitists had a fairly decent week, beating those Canadian Wannabes 7-3-2. After starting the week with strong performances in pitching and hitting, the Elitists rested several players in the second part of the week to preserve their averages: .333/.404/.565 over roughly 160 ABs isn't bad. Gitz hammered me in runs, rbis, and sbs anyway, so I cut my losses. No offense, Omar Infante. The Elitists blame Shawn Chacon's dreadful performance as the enabling factor in Jesus Colome getting a W to prevent me winning another category.

Incidently, the Elitists take pride in having Ghost Man on Third three weeks ago. He is simply dominating, and looks certain for promotion to Alomar next year.

Bonds Lots of contenders here, but Paul Konerko hit like crazy this week, putting up a nice .368/.478/.895 line, with 4 runs, 4 rbi. Honorable mention to Blalock, Dye, and V. Dub who are picking up the slack in Glaus's absence.

Neifi Quiet week for this nod this week, although Sierra's 0/13 outing is worth a shout in limited playing time. Dishonorable mention to Alex Cora with a .176/.222/.176 line.

Pedro Javier Vazquez was outstanding this week, 15.0 IP, 1 win, 1.80 era/0.73 whip, with 14 K's a 0 BB's!

Lima
The 3 headed WHIP destroying monster that is Quantrill, Groom, and Marte (sounds like the name of a law firm). All had WHIPs over 2 yet again, with 1-2 K's between them.

The Elitists tangle with Schroedingers Bat this week, hoping to continue down their successful path. Recent additions B.J. Surhoff and Mike Gonzalez look to break in to the squad, good luck boys!

*Best Ralph Wiggum Voice* I'm a juggernaut! */ voice*

WHERE HAVE EDGAR RENTERIA'S RATE STATS GONE??? I was lookin for .300/.360/.480 as a minimum... a MINIMUM!

BONDS : Guess who's back... back again! Jim Thome lays claim to what's rightfully his in a week where The Capers combined for an outstanding .303/.359/.527 line. Thome had 6 R and 11 RBI (eye popping numbers for The Capers) and rate stats of .364/.391/.955 (.955!)

NEIFI : Either Keith Ginter or Jody Gerut... without either one of them SB become a tie, but they both sucked in the end.
Ginter - 1/4/1/.238/.238/.286 Maybe starting just isn't for him...
Gerut - 2/2/1/.227/.217/.318

PEDRO : The man, the myth, the legend El Artista! Miguel got a nice CG win with 0.00/0.67/4.00 rates. A rejuvenated Johan Santana was also excellent.

LIMA : The man formerly known as the best RP ever picked up on waivers. Rodrigo went 5.1/0/0/6.75/1.50/2.50 He did have a respectable K/BB though...

News Release for Immediate Release from Vancouver, BC:

In a decisive and fast-paced move, the Vancouver Cyphers management consulted with their favourite trading partner, the braintrust of the Capers, and quickly agreed after a short give-and-take negotiating session on a trade. To further bolster their pitching staff, the Cyphers bid a reluctant farewell to Charles Johnson, David Eckstein and the revitalized Jake Westbrook in exchange for the ageless Jeff Conine, Miguel Olivo, and the extremely talented but inconsistent Johan Santana.

The Vancouver Cyphers GM stated for the record: "We felt that Santana was the key to this deal, obviously. It's quite rare to be able to acquire a starting pitcher of Johan's caliber, and he should ably complement Tim Hudson at the top of our rotation. We feel that his struggles so far this season will soon be a distant memory.

Obviously, we hope that our offense can withstand the loss of two valuable contributors. Overall we should be a better team, although we were especially reluctant to part with Jake Westbrook after his excellent start today, and anyone who watches David Eckstein play has to be impressed with how he contributes everything he can on the diamond. It goes almost without saying that Charles Johnson is a professional, veteran catcher of impeccable character."

Barring any unexpected complications, the players involved this trade will join their new teams in time to play on Friday, June 18th.

To Cyphers:
Tim Hudson
Johan Santana
Miguel Olivo
Adam Everett
Jeff Conine

To Capers:
Edgar Renteria
Jake Westbrook
Kurt Ainsworth
Charles Johnson
David Eckstein

It hurts to have lost Hudson and Olivo (I'm not sure why, but I love the guy ... the intrigue of a catcher with speed,I guess) but if Renteria comes around and Westbrook is as good as I think he is (I've loooong regretted choosing Ainsworth over him in our first deal - I did so only because I doubted the Tribe's commitment to making him a starter) I'll feel better. Even with Edgar's rate stats gone to Hell, his counting stats have been strong (relative to the rest of my team anyway). Quite frankly, Johan Santana was making me angry and I'm very happy with Miguel Batista stepping up to front my rotation while Mr. Beckett recovers on the DL. Hopefully, Jeremy Bonderman will go back to being at least league average soon as well. My keeper picture has changed greatly since the beginning of the season, but I still feel like I'll be able to piece together five solid keepers from this squad without further moves (which seems unlikely given my history ;-) )
_Shrike - Monday, June 14 2004 @ 10:04 PM EDT (#57858) #
I echo Donkit's remarks. I didn't want to part with Renteria in the first place, but as the season progressed it became clear that I still had some surplus offense to offer if the right pitcher came along. I'm prepared to wager that John Santana can return to something resembling his form from last season, and I feel a lot better with him and Tim Hudson at the front of my rotation than just Jeff Suppan and assorted question marks. I now have the happy problem of deciding on five keepers from a list containing Tim Hudson, Johan Santana, Scott Rolen, Adam Dunn, Carl Crawford, Derek Jeter, and Jose Vidro. It seems unlikely that I can climb all the way to the top of the Barfield standings given the looong climb ahead of me.

I see the problem continues. I'm rated 14th in roto but have faced the 4th toughest strength of opposition (down from second-toughest).

Hopefully my latest bid for competent pitching coincides with a more accelerated rise into respectability.

The second-toughest schedule so far ... and now I have the Walrus to deal with. All I can say is that I'm looking forward to the second half.

Thanks for the stats, Scott.

Simply summing (for the counting stats) and weighted averaging (for the rate stats) the stats accumulated by one's opposition, week-in, week-out?

Yep.

Over the course of a season the "opposition" standings tend to compress; that is, the difference between the best and worst roto teams is much greater than the best and worst opposition. But there are still significant differences. Last year, about two-thirds of a team's rank in H2H was due to its own performance, the other third due to its opposition (as determined by regression).

This year, team rankings are correlating more strongly to opposition strength in the Alomar division, a weird situation that I expect will reverse before long. In Barfield, team rank in H2H depends almost entirely on roto performance; in fact, opposition strength isn't statistically significant. Another weird situation I expect will change.

Anyhoo, I have yet another stat I call "normalized standings," which measures a team's standings if it had played an average-quality team every week. I may write about it this week if I have time, or I'll debut it next week at the season's halfway point. I also have magic numbers for playing the playoffs, avoiding relegation, etc., but it's a bit early for that.

Strength of Opposition - How is this measured? Is it how your opponents have done when they play you, or is it how the opponents you faced have done over the entire year?

Is it how your opponents have done when they play you, or is it how the opponents you faced have done over the entire year?

The first one.

For example, against my team, my opponents have scored 57, 32, 30, 39, 39, 47, 25, 35, 44 and 39 runs. That's a total of 387, the sixth-most runs "allowed" by any team. So I've faced somewhat tougher-than-average competition in run scoring.

News Release for Immediate Release from Vancouver, BC:

In yet another decisive and fast-paced move, the Vancouver Cyphers management accepted an overture from Schroedinger's Bat and completed a transaction this afternoon to acquire Billy Wagner to anchor their bullpen.

To bolster their pitching staff even further after the earlier trade this week for Johan Santana, the Cyphers bid a reluctant farewell to the talented Jerry Hairston, Jr. and the hard-throwing David Riske.

The Vancouver Cyphers GM stated for the record: "We happened to be in the right place at the right time to pick up a dominant closer like Billy Wagner, who has had some injuries woes earlier this season. Our depth at second base was attractive to Schroedinger, who were dealing with a gaping need at that position. Hopefully this can be a win-win transaction for both teams.

Obviously, we hope that our offense can withstand the loss of yet another valuable contributor. Overall we should be a better team so long as some of our hitters step up their play."

Barring any unexpected complications, the players involved this trade will join their new teams in time to play on Saturday, June 19th.
