Okay, that's a stretch. Today's Diamondbacks-Blue Jays features young Arizona starter Andrew Good versus Toronto ace Roy Halladay; if the bats can come awake again, the Jays should be able to end their brief two-game losing skid fairly easily. There may not be a more underrated double-play combo in baseball right now than middle-infield Snakes Scott Hairston and Alex Cintron. The former is hot and the latter is slumping, but they're emblematic of an Arizona team that is reinventing itself from the inside, faster than many thought they could. Howie Clark is at first base and batting second for the Gray Jays; Alex Rios is batting ninth and is overdue to break out.

Matthew Good is one of the small group of artists who, for no good reason, I can't stand listening to or hearing about.
In first year of university, my roommate had a 50 CD changer which had about 20 CDs in it, and he played them 16 hours a day. In it were artists like Creed, The Tragically Hip, and, yes, Matthew Good. (After the Christmas break, I put some of my own CDs into that changer. The first time a song not from that small group of artists played, I experienced physical pleasure.)
Sometimes a music can have colour. After that 8 month stretch of audible mediocrity, every single artist in the changer seemed brown to me. Brown like when you've mixed a bunch of watercolours together. Brown like feces. Brown like the freaking Creed cover:
One of my best friends is a Matthew Good fanboy, so I get to read quotes from his songs and hear about how meaningful his music is. (Oh, now that is a whole other issue for me. Meaningful music, pfft.) He's taken mercy on me, though, in that when I'm over at his house he makes a point of not playing Matthew Good. (Although I'm pretty sure he thinks I hate it more than I do; it doesn't cause me physical pain, I just can't stand the sound of his frigging voice.)

What is the other half of the roster move to accomodate Doc coming of the DL?

I'm not a big fan of his music (though I really like Load Me Up, which I quoted), but I love how he got in a row with Chad Kroeger of Nickleback by saying:
"It’s that whole false emotive complacent rock — bread rock. And the pathetic thing about it — and please, no offence to a lot of these people because I’m sure a lot of them are fantastic guys, and some of them I know—but if you line up Creed, 3 Doors Down, Staind, Nickelback and Default you’ve got the same band," Good protested.
"It’s that bad! I mean that bad! I can understand in the ’80s you had all kinds of new wave bands who sounded similar, but you could kinda tell them apart. But you can’t tell any of these bands apart. They f*&^ing sound identical! Something’s wrong with music when you can turn on the radio and any of those songs can run in succession."
Amen, brother.

John Cerutti is back today. Turn down the TV and turn up the radio!
Welcome back Roy Halladay, Rob Faulds, and John Cerutti.
Is it wrong that I'm so relieved to see Warren Sawkiw?
Nice start for Doc. What kind of a leash do you think he'll have?
Nice start for Doc. What kind of a leash do you think he'll have?
I can't see him going too much over 100 pitches. If he ends an inning with over 90, I imagine they won't put him out there for another one. Pure speculation on my part, though.

Good news: Five batters, five very hard hit balls.
Bad news: Zero runs.
Oh well, at least Mr. Good isn't fooling anybody.

Menechino with shades of O-Dog!
Menechino with shades of O-Dog!
Welcome back Roy Halladay, Rob Faulds, and John Cerutti.
The latter two are an improvement over what we've had to endure the past few days, but not a huge one.
Brenly comes out to the mound to ostensibly talk to Good. Neither Cerutti (an ex-pitcher!) nor Faulds clued in to the fact that Brenly was not out to talk to Good, but specifically to discuss the strike zone with the umpire, something he'd not be permitted to do in a more direct fashion.
On that note, I don't mind that pitches 3-4 inches outside not being called strikes, but Good was cheated out of a pitch down the middle. His catcher came out to settle him down (Good had walked off the mound to burn off some steam). Good followed with a batting practise fastball down the pipe that Woodward smoked for a double. This sequence of events yielded Brenly's visit to the mound.
However, just moments later, Cerutti has lost track of the series of events, citing that Woodward's hate came after Brenly's visit.
Anouncers could stand to take a form of the Hippocractic oath. At the very least, if you can do no good, at least do no harm. Cerutti and Faulds are begging for my mute button.

Ugh. Freudian slip. That's Woodward's hit, not hate.
In the second, Hinske's leadoff walk came around to score on a double by Woodward, but Menechino, Rios and Sparky couldn't cash in the second run. The hitters are still squandering opportunities, which came back to haunt them last night in the ninth.
Doc has settled into a nice groove, though neither pitcher is getting much from Darren Spagnardi on the corners.

People said I was crazy when I suggested Rios would hit .220 if called up. I'm beginning to think those people were right.
A 3-run bomb by Hinske into the second deck breaks it open.
YESSSS.. Both the Blue Jays and Fish Candy needed that 3 run shot! :)
Last year this guy filled in for Schilling when he got hurt. He was 4-2 with I believe a mid 3's Era. This kid can get it done. Don't look past him.
If I keep posting negative things about Rios, he'll hit .300 for sure. :)
Nice drive by Rios, and what a killer shot by Frankie.
I'm not looking past Andrew Good at all; he can stay in all day as far as I'm concerned.
Rios follows the Menechino HR with a triple, and Sparky hits the sac fly to make it 6-zip.

Eric Hinske is showing why I took him with my first non-keeper pick this year. Sweeeeet.
This is just what Halladay and Tosca need. The decision to remove Halladay today can be based purely on pitch count, with no concern about having to remove him in a close game.
Both the Blue Jays and Fish Candy needed that 3 run shot!
The Fish Candy are on fire today, so far hitting 10 for 11 with 6 runs scored and 6 RBI.

Is there any reason to keep Halladay in the game after the 5th? The game is pretty much in hand now, 5 innings would get him the win, and he'll have a reasonable 70 pitches.
After a long layoff, Halladay might need or want the work.
But shouldn't you err on the side of caution on his first start back? It seems like only bad things can happen if you leave him in in a 9-0 game.
Of course I write that haven't no idea how he looks or feels.
I think that the catcher and coaching staff will know when he starts to tire, then pull him... whatever pitch count that is...
Does anyone know what the clues are when Doc tires?? Loss of velocity? not sinking? ... I remember with Juan Guzman, it was 3 long outs in a row!... that was the sign of destruction EVERY time

Who's the guy at the "control center" with the bad face?
Good job by Kershner to ruin Doc's era......................
Hurting his chances of making the all-star team

I guess the clue is 2 hard ground balls... but I didn't think they looked that bad
Kersh came in and gave up 2 HR's... Roy definitely wasn't doing THAT bad... the bugger is, he(I) gets the ER's too..
oh well, if Kersh is going to struggle, a 9 run game is teh one to do it in

Anybody know where the Jay's bullpen ERA ranks in the AL?
Nice job Kershner. Nothing like giving up a home run on two strikes.

Hijack: Jeff Blair on Halladay's shoulder (COMN)
Did anyone else notice this in Jeff Blair's game recap in Saturday's Globe?
"On paper, it was the closest to being a toss-up, even though Halladay will be on a pitch count, after missing a start and going on the 15-day disabled list because of fraying in the labrum of his right shoulder."
Frayed labrum?
That's the first time I've heard Halladay's injury described as such. Is Blair speculating, or is that what the Jays are officially calling it now?

ESPN.com has starter/reliever stats. The Jays' starters have a 4.44 ERA, fourth in the league. The bullpen has a 4.32 ERA, 10th in the league.
Cleveland's bullpen has a 5.66 ERA, more than a run higher than any other team in the AL.

I find this very strange but I use to always go to www.espn.com for most of my baseball news because I like reading Gammons and Starks but for the past 2 months for some unknown reason it takes me about 3 mins to load the page up (and everything else on the site). I had the same problem for www.abc.com but after a month I didn't have to wait anymore. Everypage loads for me except www.espn.com. I doubt it has anything to do with my cookie settings. I better call Shaw to see what's the deal.
I heard someone "on air" say tendenitis... but who knows if they were speculating too...
at RotoNews, they say, "Soreness in right shoulder," about 5 different time... so I suspect that is the official word...

Alls quiet on the bench and drop Wells and Hinske in the order discussion now I guess. Yup alls forgetten and forgiven.
Hey. As an aside, Jayson Werth has a homerun and another hit today for the Dodgers, in a losing effort. Still, it's nice to see him start to find his groove. Maybe the Dodgers won't feel AS bad about the trade!
Regarding espn: It may not be your internet, Rob, it's likely just all the crap they have on ESPN now. Huge ads, a ton of flash, pop-ups, and crap that nobody cares about but takes forever to load like ESPN in Motion. I hate going to ESPN.com now.
A couple interesting notes from the LA/BOS game: Werth homered, Dave McCarty pitched again, and Eric Gagne finished the game. He showed up when the Dodgers were up 6-1, shows up today with LA up 13-4, but didn't show up yesterday in a tie game. Strange.
Unbelievable that Cerutti could say, with a straight, that Randolph is a good pitcher. 27 walks in 29 innings coming in, four walks in the game. Does no one at Sportsnet listen to what this joker is selling to us?
Ewwwww........... did anybody else just catch Frankie slide home, spit at his hands and then rubbed it off on his pants, then gave low fives in the dugout............. almost as gross as Alou peeing on his hands........
Hey "P Smith", that was cool info about the pitchers ERA's..
Makes you wonder why the relievers aren't starting..
but I suppose its the same question as "you know that indestructable stuff they make the black boxes out of, why don't they make the whole plane of that stuff"

Will Carroll, from Baseball Prospectus' web site, about a week ago:
"Roy Halladay heads to the DL in order to give his inflamed shoulder time to heal. Clearly, this injury is pitching-related and points to an impingement. I haven't seen Halladay enough to notice any change in his mechanics, but the Blue Jays watch this type of thing extremely closely. If the problem is impingement, it's easily corrected, first by treating the symptoms, then by treating the cause. Halladay has been one of the best cases of someone who has remade his mechanics at the professional level, so expecting him to adjust isn't a stretch. Many others would be unlikely to change and remain successful while doing it."
Sounds a little different than the labrum remark. Will Carroll has cited the devastating affects of a torn labrum, that no one has ever come back from that. I'm not sure what a frayed labrum is, but any talk of labrum anything should be a cause for concern. I wonder if that's the official word or Dr. Blair's personal assessment.
Unbelievable that Cerutti could say, with a straight, that Randolph is a good pitcher. 27 walks in 29 innings coming in, four walks in the game.
I'm the farthest thing from a Cerutti apologist, but the line 29 IP, 15 H, 27 BB, 29 K is actually a decent one. Just flip 14 of those walks into hits and you get: 29 IP, 29 H, 13 BB, 29 K. Not a world beater, but not awful either, and certainly much worse than the real line.
Randolph's stat line is not one you'd count on over the long term, however. The luck on the DIPS front figures to end and then the control issues will become even more serious.

Makes you wonder why the relievers aren't starting..
Because it's quite a bit easier to throw one or two innings, facing a batting order once, rather than 6 or 7 innings, facing it three times. Virtually all relievers are relievers for the very reason that they can't, or likely can't, start.

The way to avoid most of the crap on espn.com is to bookmark their baseball index page directly http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/index. It loads much more quickly than the espn home page.

I didn't mean to indicate that I think Cerutti is a great announcer, but at this point I will take anyone over Tabler. Cerutti, Candiotti, Spongebob Squarepants, it doesn't matter to me. Tabler actually caused me to mute the TV yesterday, which is the first time I've done so since I tried to watch a White Sox game with Hawk and DJ.
Faulds and Cerutti are way better than Black and Tabler. And all 4 couldn't hold the jock strap of Candiotti. BTW does Candiotti do ESPN games? I'm wondering how come he isn't the fulltime Sportsnet color guy.
Is Phelps hurt? I was almost sure that he would pinch-hit for Cat in the 8th and then Tosca sent Dave Berg out.
Ok, the decision to bring Kershner in really didn't make a huge difference in the game and I doubt anyone's going to lose any sleep over it, but if you've put your ace on a 90 pitch limit and he's at 82, why don't you let him face another hitter to get out of the inning rather than hand it to Kershner? I'll hunt down the numbers in a sec but I recall his success with inherited runners being anything but, well, success.
Ultimately, individual stats (particularly ERA) don't mean an awful lot to me, but if a pitcher is going to be held responsible for baserunners then you should really have a good reason to pull him out (pitch-counts, ineffectiveness, health, platoon-splits). I wouldn't hold this case as an example because Halladay's health was a concern and he went with a lefty, but last night with Frasor? Chulk in Oakland?

I don't think you'd want that. Candiotti's a breath of fresh air once in a while, but gets repetitive over time, more so than Cerutti.

Didn't Shulman look way younger on TV the other night when he came in to rescue the R.Black/Tabler disaster? Shaving his head was a good move for him. Didn't recognize him.
I don't know, Shulman's hair scares me because I have the same receding hairline... I was SHOCKED when he looked bald.. he looked ok... but I'm not ready for that..
Tosca said he is going to platoon Cat and Phelps, with Cat getting some of the leftys too... Rios is going to get a chance to learn the field.. might as well.. we are playing for next year after all.... or the year after..
I guess Andrew wasn't so Good after all...
Come on, it's funny

Why don't we ask Dr. Bob File? He seems to have all the medical scoops, and doesn't mind sharing it with the world!

I swear to God, if people keep trying to bait each other here everyone is going to end up banned.
"Meredith" (i.e. "Lindsay") consider this a first and final warning. Give up on baiting people or you'll be banned.

Fair enough. It was a weak attempt at humour, not an effort to bait anyone, but I see how I was playing with fire. I am chastened and promise to behave in the future.

The Seattle team doctor who first examined Halladay thought there might be a problem with the labrum, which is probably where that story started. Doc saw the real doc (Andrews!) the next day I think. The word "tendinitis" is usually just code for "it's sore, we don't know why, we think it'll just go away." Doc also reported that he experienced the same type of shoulder soreness while pitching winter ball in 1998, and it was fine after two or three weeks rest.
An observation from today's game - Alexis Rios can REALLY run. Out of the batter's box and down the line - breathtaking. Reminded me of Devo - the same graceful and effortless glide. (Whereas Wells, who actually covers more ground in the outfield, reminds me of a really good NFL running back!) Anyway, watching Rios run out the triple today was really sweet.

Wow! All the threats of banning!
Would it be wrong for me to bandy about the phrase "Banned Geeks"?
Would it be wrong for me to bandy about the phrase "Banned Geeks"?
I was at the game today and it was a good game to be at obviously. I had a Skydeck seat behind homeplate which allowed a great view of Rios' triple from the crack of the bat to him racing around the bases. For a while I've been wondering where all the power was as he's been hitting mostly weak grounders but the triple was scorched (and so was a foul into the seats which luckily only seemed to smack someone in the hand).
Once it got past the shortstop and into the gap I thought triple all the way and Alexis didn't disappoint eventhough the centerfielder got to the ball before he hit second. Never breaking those long strides he made it into third comfortably beating the relay.
Now to be fair, everyone and his brother hit Good pretty hard. Still it's nice to see that power and speed which we just haven't gotten a chance to see nearly enough of from Rios so far. I still think he should be down in Syracuse until September or so.
