Dunedin and Charleston won, Syracuse lost, New Hamphsire was rained out, and here's the fastest minor-league update in the west. Click here for links to the box scores.

Damian Moss fired two-hit shutout ball for seven innings against the Skychiefs; Chris Baker had by far his best outing of the season (8 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 2 BB and 8 K), but still fell to 0-9, 5.94. Remember when Baker was being admired in April? He ain't pretty no more.

Neomar Flores threw 3 hitless innings, with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts; Robert/Derrick Nunley was knocked around for all 3 Palm Beach runs in 1 2/3 innings; Tommi Ozuna got the win and lowered his ERA to a sparkling 8.51.

Danny Core pitched decently (5 IP, 6 H, 2 ER, 4 BB, 3 K), Davis Romero threw 2 hitless innings while walking 2, and Brian Reed struck out 1 in a scoreless ninth.

Is there something wrong with Jesse Harper? He was picked up by the Brewers over a week ago and hasn't pitched for any Brewers affiliate and last pitched for Dunedin on May 30.

Matt Ford, picked by the Brewers in the rule 5 draft fron the Jays before the 2003 season, is at AA and has so far been unimpressive.

What's going on with Jason Arnold? I haven't heard his name mentioned for a while.

Arnold is injured and has been since early May. Harper, like DJ Hanson, might be waiting for the roster shuffle expected within a week.

D'oh! That's what happens when you rush a minor-league report.

In the other game, Carlo Cota was the offensive hero, driving in 3 runs with a double, homer and sacrifice fly. Jamie Vermilyea pitched 5 shutout innings before his defence let him down in the 6th; error-single-error-single brought home one run, and reliever Bubbie Buzachero walked a batter and made a throwing error to bring home 2 more before shutting down the opposition the rest of the way. Vermilyea's line was okay: 5 1/3 IP, 6 H, 3 R (0 ER) 1 BB and 0 K; Bubbie eventually struck out 4 hitters and walked one in 1 2/3 IP.

Accordingly, I've changed my Three-Star Selection:

Third Star: Eric Arnold
Second Star: Chris Baker
First Star: Carlo Cota

I am not surprised that Matt Ford is struggling. It's a hard adjustment for a single A pitcher to spend a season in the majors and then go back down to double A. I don't approve of teams picking single A pitchers with rule 5 selections; it's not really fair to the player.

The question with Baker is whether there is an explanation for his numbers going south and then coming back to form yesterday. As long as there was a correctable flaw then I'm not too concerned where his numbers stand overall but where they are heading the rest of the year. He's certainly doesn't deserve to be 0-9 despite his high ERA because he's never gotten good run support when he pitched well.

It was rushed so much, you thought it was yesterday: Minor-League Update: June 9 :)

R. Billie, one has to feel sorry for Baker. I'm quite sure that he's a better pitcher than his ERA shows, but I think that the lack of run support got him down. Last night, Shawn Fagan missed a 3 run homer by a foot; the homer would have given Baker the W he needed so badly.

"If I didn't have bad luck, I wouldn't have had no luck at all". Just for Moffatt.

Looks like a classic pitchers' duel in Charleston. 0-0 through 7. 4 hits for Charleston, 3 for Kannapolis. (Where the hell is Kannapolis?)

Trenton and New Hampshire entered a rain delay tied 1-1 after 4, and after the rain delay, homers by Reese and Rifkin gave Trenton a 4-1 lead in the 5th.

Charleston scored a run in the 8th. It's 1-0 in the 9th.

Mapquest tells me Kannapolis is NE of Charlotte, NC.
Either that or the people of Annapolis, MD were just adopted by Roger Clemens.

Great game for Dunedin's Miguel Negron: 2-3, walk, HR, 3 runs, 2 RBI. Nice. Is he still a prospect? Maybe a 4th OF somewhere down the road?

Charleston's pitchers were terrific:
- James 6 IP, 2 H, 4 BB, 9 K
- Felix Romero 2 IP, 1 H, 0 BB, 4 K
- Brian Reed, 1 IP, 0 H, 1 BB, 2 K
Mike Green - Friday, June 11 2004 @ 09:29 AM EDT (#58734) #
Negron's performance curve by age continues to track Rios' but at a lower level. He's not yet 22, and he has done very well at Dunedin in 200 ABs; the improvements in strike zone judgment and power are quite noticeable. His defence in centerfield remains very good. Objectively he is a prospect. With respect to the more subjective issues (work ethic, maturity), it is hard to get a read. There is no local radio or newspaper coverage of the D-Jays, and so we must rely on (gasp) gossip and eye-witness reports from Floridians.

I'm hoping that he'll be promoted to New Hampshire within 1 month, so we get a closer look at him.

I think Negron's performance would really drop off if he's promoted to NH.
