Three of the Jays minor league teams fail to win a game for the second straight day. Jesse Harper pitched well again for Dunedin. Francisco Rosario blew up good with a sore arm and Josh Banks has been promoted to AA. Chris Woodward and Justin Speier have been added to the Dunedin roster.

Syracuse 9 Durham 11

Memorial Day weekend saw the opening of the disaster movie "The end of the world". Chris Baker and Damian Moss made their own disaster movie yesterday allowing eighteen runs between them in a combined seven innings. Baker allowed a run in the first, but the Chiefs scored five in the second on four hits, two walks and two wild pitches. Jeff Guiel's three RBI triple was the big blow. Durham scored three in the bottom of the second but the Chiefs got those back in the top of the third thanks to a Gabe Gross triple and a home run from Noah Hall. In the bottom of the third Durham tallied five more runs on five hits and two Skychief errors. Mike Smith relieved Baker and gave up a two run home run in the fourth to make it 11-8 for Durham. Baker had the worst start of the year by a Jays pitcher, nine runs and nine hits allowed in 2.2 innings.

Bob File continued his strong play with 2.1 innings of perfect relief.

Russ Adams was 0-4 with an error. Gabe Gross went 1-4 with a walk. The offensive leader was Noah Hall 4-5 with a triple, a home run, three runs and two RBI's.

Game Story

Portland 8 New Hampshire 5

Francisco Rosario had more bicep soreness in his start yesterday. There was no news of it before the game but manager Mike Basso was surprised when he heard about it after Portland has three runs on the board after twelve pitches. Basso said that Rosario's english is not too good but there was no sign of trouble in the bullpen. Ryan Houston came on in long relief and allowed four more runs in 4.2 innings. Meanwhile Abe Alvarez had a perfect game going for Portland through five innings. In the sixth Danny Solano doubled in two runs. NH added three more late runs to make the score closer than the game was.

Danny Solano was 2-4 with three RBI's. Aaron Hill went 0-3 with a walk.

Game Story

Josh Banks has been promoted due to an injury to Derek Lee. Will he ever see A ball again?

Tampa 1 Dunedin 7

Jesse Harper had his usual efficient start, five innings, five hits, no walks, one run and five K's. Dunedin scored three in the bottom of the first. Carlo Cota hit a solo home run. Miguel Negron singled, Raul Tablado doubled and Jason Waugh singled him in. The score remained at 3-1 for most of the game. After Harper left, Andy Torres and Bubbie Buzachero faced one hitter over the minimum in the final four innings. Dunedin added four insurance runs in the eighth.

Tablado was the hitting star for the second straight game, 3-4, two doubles, two runs and two RBI's. Gregg Raymundo also had three hits.

Tracey Thorpe update

Justin Speier and Chris Woodward have been added to the Dunedin roster on rehab assignments.

Charleston 1 Lake County 8

Justin James was not at his sharpest yesterday. Lake County scored in the second on two hits and a hit batsman. In the fifth they added three more on three hits, a walk, a wild pitch and a passed ball. Charleston had only four hits in the game. Robinson Diaz hit a homerun in the ninth to break up the shutout.

James line was 4.2 8 4 4 1 2. Diaz had two of the Cats four hits. Ryan Roberts went 0-3 with a walk.

Game Story

Josh Banks next scheduled start for Dunedin would have been wednesday
it will be interesting to see if the Fisher Cats bump anyone to keep Banks on his normal scheduled start.

Today's Memorial Day games:

Syracuse (David Bush) at Durham 1:05
Portland at New Hampshire (Gustavo Chacin) 6:05
Clearwater at Dunedin (Ismael Ramirez) 12 noon
Lake County at Charleston (Shaun Marcum) 4:05

Rob will be doing the NH game on BB Radio. The Syracuse and Charleston games are both available and interesting with prospects going for the good guys in both games.

Go Banks! I'm thinking he'll be in AA for the rest of the year unless he's so good he forces a move to AAA in another six weeks. This puts him right on the same schedule that David Bush was and his stuff appears to be a bit better and his age a bit younger. Out of the healthy prospects in the minors Josh is probably the frontline arm at the moment. He just has to master that slider and learn to handle hitters who have seen his type of stuff before.

Too bad about Rosario. Those muscular injuries can be a real pain if they aren't allowed the time to heal completely. I would shut him down for a couple of weeks and give him proper rehab on that arm so that the muscle fibers can repair themselves. If not the injury will keep recurring and maybe even get worse.

In another week there will be a fresh batch of arms to shoehorn into the system. I'm beginning to think the Jays might overdraft a lefty in the first round because of the shortage in the system. I wouldn't be surprised to see David Purcey picked; it's not often you get a chance to pick a healthy lefty who throws mid-90s.
Mike Green - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 12:10 PM EDT (#60956) #
I wonder who will be promoted to take Banks' spot in the Dunedin rotation. It'll be either Mastny or Marcum, I think.
_johnnnyS99 - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 12:13 PM EDT (#60957) #
How about the return of DJ Hanson, as JP said he could be their shortly. Maybe a return from the DL from Vince Perkins? Chad Plieness was good starter for the first part of last year, and Vermilyea can start too.
Gerry - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 12:38 PM EDT (#60958) #
I think the Jays will do most of their promoting around June 10 to 15th so I expect fill-ins for the next two or three starts. Tracey Thorpe can also start, Justin Speier will probably start on his rehab assignment.

Dunedin are losing 2-0 after six. Syracuse and Durham are tied at 0 after three. David Bush has allowed two hits and a walk through three.

BBRadio Out Of Town Scoreboard:

AAA - No score after three in Durham.
A+ - Dunedin down 2-0 after 6, both runs for Clearwater coming in the top of the first.

I'll listen to a bit of the Chiefs game while I'm here.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 02:07 PM EDT (#60961) #
Top 4th - AAA:

Chad Gaudin pitching for Durham.
Fagan gets behind 1-2, then singles. Marvin singles as well, to left-centre. Williams up with two men on and...wow, the radio guy's (Bob McElligott, milb.com tells me) HR call is quite different. 3-run homer for Syracuse, as if I could miss the it. "ABC ya later" is still better than Faulds' call.
Gabe Gross grinds out the Chiefs' 4th hit in a row with another single. Pitching coach goes to the mound. A balk then sends Gross to second. Hall walks. Single, Single, HR, Single, Balk, Walk. Nice inning for Gaudin...not.
Jeff Guiel up, grounds it back to the pitcher. Should have been a 1-4-3 DP but Gaudin threw it wild. Bases loaded, nobody out on the fielder's choice. Stubby Clapp then drives it to right. Gross scores, Hall scores, Guiel to third, 2-run single for Stubb. 5-0 Syracuse. That's it for Chad Gaudin.
Tim Corcoran will face Tim Whittaker when we return on BBRadio.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 02:08 PM EDT (#60962) #
as if I could miss the it

Damn tpyos.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 02:14 PM EDT (#60963) #
Whittaker flies to left for the first out, run scores on the sac fly. Clapp to second. 6-0 good guys.
Adams, the ninth hitter this inning, singles to centre. Clapp flies around third and Pete LaForest misses the tag at the plate on a great slide by The Stubb. 7-0.
Fagan up again, this time with one out and a man on first. He breaks hsi bat and pops up to the pitcher in foul ground.
Two outs for Benard, grouded to the right side. Unassisted at first base, inning over.
Going to the bottom of the fourth, 7-0 Syracuse over Durham.
Mike Green - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 02:17 PM EDT (#60964) #
Sounds like you joined the game at the right time, Rob.
Gerry - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 02:19 PM EDT (#60965) #
Dunedin tied their game at 2's in the bottom of the seventh.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 02:24 PM EDT (#60966) #
NEWS: Ryan Glynn is the newest Syracuse SkyChief. He was released (by Atlanta?), then added to the roster. New pitcher on the team!

Bottom 4th - AAA:

(The following is my special "Keep Track Of How David Bush Does" Play-By-Play.)
Bush hits the first batter on his first pitch.
Matt Diaz (1 on, 1 out): ball, strike swinging, ball, foul, foul, fly ball to centre. One out.
Next batter: Pops out to Fagan on the first pitch.
Two outs for Jared Sandberg: strike, foul, check swing ball, swing and a miss, strike three.

No hits or walks, no runs. 7-0 after four.
And when I said "I'll listen to a bit", I meant it. :) I'm done, anyone who wants to pick up from here, go right ahead.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 02:24 PM EDT (#60967) #
Sounds like you joined the game at the right time, Rob.

And now that I have left, they will end up losing 8-7 in 10 innings. ;)

Dunedin came back to defeat Clearwater 3-2. I don't know if this is ominous, but Chris Woodward started at short, but was lifted in the top of the 4th. COMN.

Dunedin wins 3-2 with a run in the bottom of the ninth.

Chris Woodward left the game after 2 ab's.
Negron went 3-4 with a walk and a double.
Big V had all 3 rbi's, and a walk.
Tablado stays hot collecting 2 more hits.

Dunedin's bats are all heating up now, and it appears that they are poised to take 1st overall in their division. The winning is slowly making it's way up through the minors now.
Gerry - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 03:28 PM EDT (#60970) #
David Bush had an excellent start today, 6 IP, 3 H, 2 BB, 5 K, no runs. Mike Nakamura is in to pitch in relief.
_Thorn - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 03:42 PM EDT (#60971) #
Vermilyea will take Bush's start in Dunedin this time. After that who know's. All star break is in about two weeks in florida, so look for several moves around that time.Vito and Tablado may move up, Harper will have five starts by then, and the rehab guys will be ready to beign live games(Hanson,Perkins).By then they should have a pretty good feel for some of the older guys in AA and AAA.Cuts and or moves are coming very soon.
_gid - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 03:46 PM EDT (#60972) #
AAA: Nakamura strikes out the side in the 7th and gets a scoreless 8th to boot (I think a couple of fly outs).
Mike Green - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 04:04 PM EDT (#60973) #
Thorn, why do I have the feeling that all of us are going to be confusing Bush and Banks for, oh, about the next 7 years? 2nd round draft picks, relief-to-start conversions, same basic modus operandi...

Anyways, thanks for the tip.

Woody is down on rehab for his hamstring. After his earlier comeback then a setback I assume the Jays are being careful. Look for 2 AB's today, 3 AB's tomorrow, maybe 4 the day after.

Ryan Glynn stats from Richmond 11 games 17 innings 26 hits 14 base on balls 19 strike outs and a ERA of 5.60. Hmmm, lets just say I'm underwhelmed with what Ryan Glynn has done so far for the Richmond Braves

The Charleston situation:

5th inning, 1 out, Charleston trails Lake County 2-1 and is batting. Walks to Patrick and Morrin Davis, followed by a single by Juan Peralta have loaded the bases for Ryan Roberts (who homered earlier). 2-1 count now.
_My Names not Ry - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 05:20 PM EDT (#60977) #
Looks from the Box Score like Marvin left the game early....Cue speculations????? Couldnt be anything like he just came out of the game or anything :)
Mike Green - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 05:23 PM EDT (#60978) #
Charleston's 5th continued

Roberts walks, forcing in Patrick. Pitching change for Lake County- Perez out, Roehl in. Robinson Diaz hits a comebacker, Roehl fields and throws it over the catcher's head. 2nd run of the innings scored, bases still loaded. Clint Johnston hits it to the track in left, and the leftfielder drops it. He throws it wildly, but the backup dives and makes a great play to avoid a complete disaster. One run scores, bases loaded. David Smith grounds into a double play.

After 4 and 1/2, Charleston 4, Lake County 2.

Another MLS?

MLS - minor league sweep
Mike Green - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 05:31 PM EDT (#60980) #
Bottom of 5:

Bill Peavey singles to right, for Lake County's 4th hit off Marcum. Schilling strikes out swinging (7th K for Marcum). De La Cruz grounds into a 4-6 fielder's choice. The flip from Roberts to Peralta was high, preventing a DP try. Rojas strikes out swinging.

Marcum is getting ahead of all the hitters, and sounds dominating.

Charleston 4 Lake County 2 after 5.

I've got to go.

Top 1st - AA:

First pitch at 7:10.
1-2 pitch to Kilburg is flied to left, right at Godwin. One out.
Johnson hits the 1-1 right back to Chacin. Two outs on the 1-3.
Roneberg knocks the 1-0 back through the box, and past a diving Hill. Single for Roneberg, he's now hitting .299. He then steals second.
Sean McGowan grounds the 1-2 to second for Rich. Easy 4-3 play, inning over.
No runs on one hit.

NH Lineup: Godwin 7, Solano 5, Rich 4, JFG DH, Hill 6, Logan 3, Jova 9, Umbria 2, Singleton 8

Bottom 1st - AA:

Godwin takes a first pitch strike. Quickly 0-2, then a swinging strikeout. Smith one K away from the Eastern League lead.
Solano takes two balls and singles to centrefield.
Rich (1-for-22 recently) lines it off the pitcher's glove. The throw is not in time, and everybody is safe.
JFG (1-for-20) also gets ahead with a 3-1 count. He walks and the bases are loaded.
Hill grounds it to third. Go to second, one out, not in time at first. Solano scores on the fielder's choice and there are runners on the corners, two outs. 1-0 NH.
Logan also gets ahead (happening a lot here): 3-1 pitch is fouled off and the count is full. Grounded to first, the old unassisted single play.
1-0 NH after one.

Does Mike Basso usually coach third? He seems to be out there a lot.

Don't forget to stay tuned to BBRadio for the Cahoots Sports Bar and Grill Trivia Question, coming up in the third inning.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 07:40 PM EDT (#60996) #
Top 2nd - AA:

Chacin pitching.
Hattig (the Guam Bomb or something) falls behind 0-2. A ground ball to Hill is converted into the first out.
Bailey...another two-strike count, but he comes back and works it full. High fly ball to left, and it's gone! Tie ballgame after Jeff Bailey's 6th HR of the year.
A quick 3-0 count on the next batter, and a single to right for O'Keefe.
Perez behind 0-2, swing and a miss. First K for Chacin today.
Two outs for "The Other" Edgar Martinez. Martinez flies out all the way to the track in centre.
1 run, 2 hits, tied at 1 in Manchester.
_goatboy - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 07:44 PM EDT (#60997) #
Yup, Mike Basso is the third base coach for the Fisher Cats and has been all year. Most minor league clubs go with a manager who is the third base coach, a first base coach who is usually the batting coach, and a pitching coach. Each organization with have roving batting and pitching coaches as well who move from team to team through the organization.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 07:53 PM EDT (#60998) #
Bottom 2nd - AA:

Jova down 1-2 after three pitches. A ball off the base of the wall puts Jova on second.
Umbria rips the 1-0 to left. Jova stops at third. Two on, nobody out.
Singleton goes to 3-0, then swings at ball four. The full count pitch (a changeup!) is swung on and missed. One out.
Godwin swings and misses at the 1-2 pitch, another change. Two outs.
Solano gets ahead 2-1, then the count goes full. Another offspeed strikeout...man, that changeup.
No runs this inning, still 1-1.

Fact: When the F-Cats score first, they are 21-9.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 07:58 PM EDT (#60999) #
Top 3rd - AA:

Kilburg bunts back to Chacin, one out.
Johnson grounds out to third.
Roneberg, 2-1 pitch, lined to Logan at first. Nice backhand stab, inning over.
Still 1-1.

Today's Cahoots Sports Bar and Grill Trivia Question: Two players from the 2003 Boston Red Sox -- a pitcher and a second baseman -- are no longer with the team. Who are they?.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 08:14 PM EDT (#61000) #
Bottom 3rd - AA:

Rich down 1-2, then a full count. He walks.
JFG also has a full count and he walks again. Smith threw his 60th pitch in that at bat. Two on, nobody out.
Hill behind 0-2 and seems to have hurt his left leg. He stays in and pops it up to the shortstop. One out.
Logan, 2-2, double play. So much for that inning.
No runs, no hits, two walks, one left.
Still 1-1 after 3.

And the answers? Burkett and Walker.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 08:23 PM EDT (#61001) #
Top 4th - AA:

0-2 pitch on the first batter. Quick strikeout for Chacin against McGowan.
The Guam Bomb rips one to right-centre. He chugs into second with a double.
The 3-0 pitch to Bailey is a strike. So is the next pitch. Then a popup to Jova in shallow right. Two outs.
O'Keefe strikes out to end the inning. 3rd K for Chacin tonight.
After 3.5, its still 1-1.
_Rob - Monday, May 31 2004 @ 08:31 PM EDT (#61002) #
Bottom 4th - AA:

Jova flies out.
Umbria works the count full and he drives it to the track in centre. Two outs.
Singleton falls behind 0-2, then strikes out. The 5th for Smith, and his first 1-2-3 inning.
Still 1-1 after 4.

And I must go. If "goatboy" or anyone else who might be following along wants to pick up the play-by-play, it's all yours.
