The Jays will aim to make it five consecutive home wins this afternoon as they meet the Rangers in a 4:05 pm start. Young Juan Dominguez gets the start for Texas, while Miguel Batista takes the hill for Toronto. A win today would give the Jays a 14-5 record at home on their last 19 games -- which, thanks to their horrible April performance, would push them one game above .500 at Skydome. The Blue Jays are making Toronto a place other teams don't want to visit. Everyone except Ed Mirvish would probably say that's a good thing.
which poster is going to be used for batista? All the suckas want to know! :)
On Juan Dominguez: He features a good fastball, a fantastic changeup, and a slurve charitably described as rudimentary. He's had great success in the minors over the last two years, but that's partly due to younger hitters having so little experience with such a well-developed changeup. Last year in the bigs, he made a lot of hitters look stupid, but when hitters guessed right they hit the ball about 500 feet.
If Texas can a get from Dominguez what I call a "Ranger Quality Start," three runs in five innings or four in six, they'll be quite pleased.
Today, you should see Fullmer, Nix and Dellucci instead of Perry, Allen, and Eric Young. You might also see the Huck.

Today's lineups:
That Jays lineup looks pretty familiar. And Gary Matthews sits on the one night the Cheer Club won't be there to heckle him.

I dont believe Batista will have any poster for him. From what I gathered today will be a Cheer Clubless game at the Dome. May the baseball gods help the Blue Jays....

Tosca should be prepared to have Kershner or DLS be the first man out of the pen, to either get Showalter to flip the lefties or to take advantage of lefty-lefty matchups if he doesn't flip them.
Interestingly, Showalter seems fully aware of his platoon-induced vulnerability and is batting the LHB in the 2-4-6-8 spots (I don't count Texeira since he's a switch-hitter who'd much prefer to see a LHP).
With an OPS of 1000, Nix is a pretty formidable 8th place hitter. Why not Nix 4th and Fullmer 8th?

Not surprisingly, Frasor isn't available today. Neither is Adams. I hope El Artista can give them some innings today and the bats give the rest of the 'pen a lead to work with.

From Yesterday:
"Showalter is a tough nut to figure. Back in his Yankees days, I used to be impressed by him. He seemed to be sharper than the average bear. He'd bring in Rivera for 1 1/3 inning saves if it meant staving off danger in the 8th. Few other managers would have dared bring in their closer in such situations."
Mariano Rivera only ever pitched 12 games in relief for Showalter, and was never credited with a save.

Wow. Thanks for the slice of humble pie. I'm wondering just what the hell I think it is I remember then! (Getting old is sad.)

Hopefully we'll see Aquilino Lopez today, he hasn't pitched since his 3 inning effort in Boston.. I don't know why.
Delgado *just* got a little under that. Nearly 3-0 Jays. 1-0 Jays instead.
Dominguez seems to be all over the shop with his pitches
Nice to get a lead, but you get the feeling they could have really beaten up on Dominguez...
Am I being harsh or has Soriano blown two DP's in two days now?
Amazing. It's weird watching Zaun throw down to 2nd; it looks like he's just lobbing it over and he still gets them!
Stop hitting the Blue Jays you Ebil pitcher! *shake fist*
i think hinske has left the hitting groove Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay over there ---->
Hey Alex UK, do they still have mlb and nhl on channel five?
True to form, it's an easy third inning for Batista.
Lefty - i think so but normally at some ungodly hour. I am currently watching it on mlb.tv and listening to Tom and Jerry on the Fan
Now would be a nice time for the Phelps Ground Ball Streak to end.

Yes. Yes it would have been.
A bit disappointing that the Jays only have a 1 run lead since Dominguez has been all over the place, but a lead is a lead I s'pose.

Not being able to score on this kid could really hurt the Jays later; their 'pen is pretty thin today.

I worked in London for a couple yrs. and travelled alot. I grew to take jet lag as my companion. Go to bed at about 7pm and wake up about midnite or 1 AM and tune in baseball. The games normally started at midnite or 1 in the morning and were live.
Then it would be breakfast, a 06:35 tube into work before the morning rush.

I'm still struggling to get over my jet lag. I don't have a TV at home(!) so I can't even try channel 5. For me, it's just mlb.tv. And after being present in person - in the front row no less - it's just not the same any more.
Andrew K, one of the traditional stuborn Englishman eh. No TV, watch the football, rugby and criket in the pub huh?
Ah yes, I miss those Saturday and Sunday afternoons in my local trying to beat my Guiness best.
Ah yes, I miss those Saturday and Sunday afternoons in my local trying to beat my Guiness best.
Almost. I'm not a great pub goer in fact; the pubs near my house aren't so friendly. I usually listen to cricket and football on the radio. I sometimes watch cricket or tennis in the senior common room in college (I find it easy to mark students' work in front of the tv); I used to always go there on a Sunday lunchtime to watch formula 1, but I've got bored of it now.
Double steal for the BlueJays. Small ball played big, woo.
And Hinske scores on the grounder!
And now Menechino goes for his third HBP of the game...

What with Zaun stealing yesterday, Wells today, and then a double steal... do you think JP and Tosca have been converted by the White Sox success and David Justice's eloquent arguments for the smallest of small ball?

I doubt it. Today's plays are more a function of this kid's inability to hold runner. Most of the other ones are hit-and-runs and Zaun was a product of the situation. The Zaun one might have been a crossed up hit-and-run or a decision to start Zaun and let Phelps lead-off if he doesn't put the ball in play and Zaun gets thrown out.

I think converted might be to strong. They are taking advantage of Dominguez's slow movement to the plate today. But JP did address this on Wednesday night. Said they were trying to grind out additional runs to support their shakey pen and lack of pop or something to that effect.
Hey Alex and Andrew, another brit here watching on MLB.com.
I'm jealous of your recent trip to skydone, seems like you chose a perfect time to visit. I'm contemplating a visit to friends in Boston in August, but knowing my luck it'll be another depressing sweep by the Sox.
Bet you wish you'd extended your stay a few more days huh !

Berg in for Delgado at first - it's the knee. Delgado isn't in the dugout.
Carlos Delgado has been taken out of the game again. Speculation?
Or maybe Delgado has been traded to the Dodgers again.....
The Jays are merely showacasing Berg's flexibility in order to trade him.
(That's what I keep telling myself, anyway)

Nice play by Hinske, is it too early to start thinking Gold Glove ? he's not done much wrong this season so far...
Well if you don't include his batting in the equation ;)
Well if you don't include his batting in the equation ;)
Perhaps, after he tweaked his knee earlier in the homestand, they might have had Delgado DH until the left for the West Coast and grass fields. Phelps isn't so bad that he'll hurt them defensively, but they sure need his bat full-time. But that would have required a little foresight...
Not a chance. He's made some pretty plays and hasn't boned up a lot of plays, but the range isn't there. Plus he'd have to be pretty spectacular to beat out Chavez.
Man, they've really let this kid off easy. 2 runs in 6 innings the way this game's gone is pretty pathetic.
you guys are once again on the ball, i was all set to hear the trade to Tampa for Aubrey Huff rumors. :)
The HP ump has been terribly inconsistent today! Anyone else agree?
Not to concerned how many runs the Jays score....as long as it is more than the other team :)

Absolutely, but I really don't see the Jays shutting the Rangers out...It would be a shame if the Jays don't score here and then the Ranger sneak up with the long ball and tie it up.

oh i like this new pitcher.....we just need to get someone on base and he will wild pitch them home!!
Yeah I guess Chavez would be hard to beat... but its more a comment on how much better Hinske is at 3rd this season.
2 wild pitches/passed balls and another run to the good guys...

I hope this rib thing is slight. For a hitter like Carlos this can have a real effect on his pop. He has had some mighty cuts the past few days. Bigger swings than I had noticed earlier in the season Best to rest it.
I wonder if this is something that has been on going this yr? Might explain the lack of production.

Worst case scenario: Delgado to the DL, Phelps to 1B, Gross to DH?
Signs of inexperience...
Dominguez gives up two hits to Reed Johnson on 0-2 counts, the second courtesy of an absolute meatball.
With a 3-1 count, Alex Rios swings at a ball at the letters, as if he were protecting a 1-2 count.

Perhaps they could just sit Delgado out tomorrow and DH Estalella against the LHP Rogers, just to give them another day to figure out where Delgado stands.

They likely call up Benard first IMO
Is he on the 40-man?
Is he on the 40-man?
Benard's not on the 40-man roster. Gross is playing better than Rios was before his promotion. It's just a matter of time before Gross and Rios are both in the every-day lineup, IMO.
No he is not, I believe they still have one open spot though, Estelalalalalal wasnt on 40 man either, they promised Marv the ole call up by a certain day or June or let him walk, much like they have done to guys in the past. I just dont see them calling up Gross with the bum elbow, of course all of this is just under the assumption Delgado goes on the DL, which may or may not even be an issue.
Someone better nudge Tosca and wake him up to get a reliever warm...
I'm pretty sure Delgado's not going to be going to the DL. I was (hopefully) just going through a hypothetical!
Even on Batista's good days, he's a tough pitcher to watch.
Does anyone know what the new plan with Gross is in light of the injury?
What the hell is berg doing stealing????????
he was out by a MILE!!
he was out by a MILE!!
Poor Berg! Can't stand the prosperity. He gets a single as the clean-up hitter and then he thinks he's Rickey Henderson and gets thrown out by a mile by Ken Huckaby of all people.
He wasn't stealing, if he was he would have only been out by a kilometre.
They are saying on the radio it could of been a misread of the signs - ie a hit and run, just minus the hit.
The last Berg that had this much bad luck sank the Titanic
Naughty Naughty Texas Rangers, Stop hitting the Blue Jays you Ebil Ebil People!! *shakes fist*
As far as we-the TV Audience-know there is no one warming.
Nice AB by the rookie!!
C'mon Hinske, this is GO time.
C'mon Hinske, this is GO time.
That Berg screw-up look real bad now...
It could have been a Zaun screw-up. We don't know who missed the sign.
Kershner standing on mound stretching
Hopefully to come in to face Blalock after Batista gets Young.
Unrelated to the above, very nice plate appearance by Rios. Lots of composure.

HINSKE IS BACK!!! Parade down Bay Street in October!!!
Hinske's clutch (circa 2002)!
TSN Turning Point: Rios' AB?
TSN Turning Point: Rios' AB?
Make Ramirez pay. YEAH!! Way to go Hinske. Wasn't Ramirez the guy Showalter brought in for his ML debut last year to get the final out of the 9th when Texas was leading by something like 8 or 9 runs? Looks good on Bucky!!!
With the Gameday lag all I had there for a good minute was "In play, run scoring play". 3 run lead makes me a lot more comfortable. Too bad Gomez couldn't do more, but I think we have this game in hand now - go pen! 6 more outs...
Batista back out (watching game on yahoo)? 104 pitches, guess this means no confidence in the pen?
I guess if Batista's feeling strong they don't want to use guys unnecessarily with Hentgen and Miller coming up.
I'm sorry, I'm not quite sure what I was thinking there...
Wow, I'm impressed Batista got through that inning so well. Who closes with Frasor unavailable? A-Lo?
What I want to know is what was said by Patterson to Batista during the bottom of the 7th. It looked rather intense.
Maybe something along the lines of
"Want go to for a meal afterwards?"
"Well only if you are paying"
"Want go to for a meal afterwards?"
"Well only if you are paying"
123 pitches i think its safe to say no complete game for Batista, my guess is ........... lopez
4 run lead, nice. Guess fantasy saves vultures won't have to worry about a Blue Jay not named Frasor getting a save today. I really hope Tosca doesn't let Batista go back out there.
Not so safe - Black just said Batista gonna come back out.
Whatever Patterson says seems to have worked. That must be the highest pitch count for a Jays starter since Ted Lilly's CG against Minny. Looks like Batista and Patterson have kissed and made up.
Is Tosca familiar with Pithcer Abuse Points? Surely now is a great time to let someone in the pen log a low-stress inning of work.
Reed Johnson loves them lefties.

and another hit for berg......now lets see if he can not get caught stealing.

What's going on in right? Dellucci had some fun with a couple of Wells' flyballs and got completely lost...and who's this and what did he do to Dave Berg?
Berg with another hit! 2 for 2 as the clean-up hitter. Let Delgado go on the DL. Berg's got it covered, he's fighting for his major league life. Hope he doesn't try to steal or hit and run again!
Dellucci had some fun with a couple of Wells' flyballs and RIOS got completely lost
Dont have game on tv, but is it true, Gibbons is holding Berg on the bag? :)
Hmmm...Tosca needs a righty and goes with Ligtenberg instead of Lopez. When was the last time Lopez pitched?
Also just noticed that after the "hot" start by the orioles that they are under .500 now
I was wondering the same thing - didn't Lopez go 3 a few days back and look good doing it? Is Tosca looking at him to go long over the next couple of days if Hentgen or Miller have trouble?
This is where Tosca frustrates me - no need to play reliever roulette with a 4 run lead and Kershner pitching well against the only batter he faced (IMHO). And Fawaz, you are probably right - makes sense that Lopez is first out of the pen tomorrow night in the 6th or 7th inning.
RE: Berg. There's no way that was an attempted stolen base a couple of innings ago. Someone blew the hit-and-run play.. I'm just not sure who.
yay! 5 game winning streak! Excellent game by batista and the Jays all around! Now tommorow they can get the Broom out and go for back to back home sweeps!
3-0 with Rios in the team, we should've brought him up weeks ago !
Lopez last pitched 6 days ago against Boston. 3 scoreless innings.
Bunt single... eek! Can someone watching tell me who was snoozing on that play? Hinske?
Glad to see Ligtenberg pitch well there, our pen seems to have regained some of its swagger.
Big game tomorrow against Kenny Rogers - lets hope the bats can carry us tomorrow cause the pitching has done more than its fair share of late.

Woooooo! 5! God, this team has had a 6 game winning streak and a 5 game winning streak, but are still way under .500. Talk about streaky.
Were there any Cheer Clubbers there at all today? I didn't start watching until around the 5th.
Your spot on Mike Moffatt. That was not a steal. My guess is Zaun didn't catch the sign or simply didn't swing. But people need someone to kick around and its Berg these days.

Well, given how badly he's played, it's understandable. Also given how often he plays (not very), I could see him missing a sign if they changed them recently. They shouldn't have to, though, as it's not like the Jays give the opposition a lot of opportunities to steal their small ball signs! :)

Berg had 2 hits and made no errors - Do we trade him now for top prospects or sign him to a multi-year contract?
Anyone else noticed the Giants? 7 straight wins and they're just 3.5 behind the first place Padres.
Wilner just commented on the Cheer Club on the fan!

I would say that has less to do with the Giants and more to do with it being the weakest division in the NL.

I heard that too.. that's awesome!

Tough to say.. I'd wait to see how they perform in interleague to make any judgements. There just could be a lot of parity in the NL this year.

Pistol: I haven't seen Rios yet, but it sounds as though he's holding his own so far. I'm definitely excited to see him play. Still, I don't think he should have been called up any earlier. He only recently started to pull it together at Syracuse.
Incidentally, I like the idea of bringing up Gross to DH if Delgado is injured. Hey--why not bring up Russ Adams to play second while we're at it? He's been tearing it up lately at AAA.
How about a lineup of:
Johnson LF
Adams 2B
Gross DH
Wells CF
Phelps 1B
Zaun C
Hinske 3B
Rios RF
Gomez SS

Why put Rios in the 8-spot? From the game I watched last night, he makes enough contact to warrant batting second (I wouldn't be surprised if he's hitting fifth in the order by season's end).
Why bring Gross up now? If Delgado's out I'd give Pond a prolonged look at one of his more natural positions.
Did anyone have any idea why Tosca substituted Berg, instead of Pond, for Delgado? It worked out fine, and I guessed that CT figured that Berg was better defensively at first base. If that is in fact true, Pond is going to have a very limited role.
Pond at 1st, and Phelps DHing (or vice versa) would be another interesting option. Gross might have a bit more speed than Pond, and may be more of a pure hitter, which would make him a better #2 hitter, though he may not be quite there yet.
I don't like Rios hitting second, at this point anyway, because of his track record of being a free swinger. He did draw a key walk today. If he can hit in the majors the way he hit last year, he would be a great #3 (or possibly cleanup) hitter. He probably needs a year or two before he fits that bill though.

I hope Tosca went to Berg so he could keep the lefty Pond on the bench if he needed to pinch-hit later. He did also have Clark though, so that's likely not it.
Depending on the severity of Carlos injury, maybe a couple games, I'm starting Phelps at first in order to give him some field time with Berg and Pond splitting the DH. When Carlos can swing again I start him at DH and keep Phelps at first for a couple to few more games so the Carlos doesn't re-injure diving for a shot down the line.
Phelps is the guy who might have a future on this team. The Jays need to find out. Pond likely always will be bench strength on the Jays or another club. It might do Phelps some good to get out into the field instead of sitting on the bench in reflection.

Johnny or Moffatt, what did Wilner say?
I didn't catch all of it, but what happened was a caller came on saying how much the Skydome sucks and how the Jays need a new stadium before watching a Jays game will become tolerable.
Wilner said that basically the Dome wasn't the entire problem and that fans up in the 500s have a blast watching the games with signs and songs, etc.

I sure lucked out today. Free tickets to a great game on a beautiful day . For the most part, Batista threw well, battling all afternoon. He may not have seemed all that efficent, but ultimately, `his wildness was undoubtedly effective.
Noticed something subtle between Wells and Rios. Sure, both may have airmailed similar throws on successive days, but in the long run, the competition will only improve the D.
If the Ranger bats finish the series the way they started it, I like Miller and his slider's chances tommorrow morning.

I heard him. It was gratifying to get some more love. ;)
I felt like calling in and listing the incredibly lame excuses people use not to come to the Dome (my favourite is still "I hate the breakdancers" followed closely by "I hate the uniforms") and telling people just how dumb excuses like that are.
I didn't because I was supposed to be hosting a bachelor party and was in the middle of prep. But then the groom-to-be got stuck in Denver until tomorrow because bad weather forced his plane to land.
So, uh, Cheer Club guys -- we might be having a bachelor party in 518 tomorrow. Hope you don't mind.

Now THERE'S an idea to get people out to the ballpark....
Originally the idea was to go curling against a team of strippers, but while I could find strippers who could curl, I couldn't find a rink that would host a bachelor party.
Curling against a team of strippers... what a great idea. And some fine work, I would think, to actually find strippers who could curl. HURRY, HARD!

I don't know...those breakdancers pissed some people off. :)
